Gilreath, Odis

F. Gilreath, 68, of 2602 Warren Drive, Anderson, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, he began his career as a fireman with the city of Anderson in 1960, rising in 1980 to the rank of chief, which remained his position until his retirement in 1999. He was the longest serving fire chief for the city of Anderson. He was a member of S.C. National Guard and Varennes Heights Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was the 1999 Recipient of the South Carolina Order of the Silver Crescent Award; a member of the South Carolina Firefighters Hall of Fame; a lifelong member of South Carolina State Fire Chiefs Association; the 1996 recipient of South Carolina State Fire Chiefs Association Fritz Turner Award; a lifelong member of South Carolina State Firemen’s Association; recipient of the South Carolina State Firemen’s Association Citizenship Award; Nominating Committee chairman for the South Carolina State Firemen’s Association; chairman of South Carolina State Firemen’s Association Legislative Committee; Governor’s appointee to the South Carolina State Fire Commission; chairman of the South Carolina Arson Advisory Board; and a member of the South Carolina Emergency Response Commission. He served on the planning committee of the construction of the current Main Fire Station. He started the City of Anderson Bomb Squad and the Anderson Technical Rescue Team and served as coordinator of both. He helped organize the Anderson County Haz-Mat Team and served as vice-chairman of the Executive Board. He was instrumental in building the countywide Anderson Fire Service Training Facility, served as chairman of the Board of Governors and was honored by having the facility dedicated to him. He was the first recipient of the Anderson County Fire Department Lifetime Achievement Award; a charter member of the Anderson County Local Emergency Planning Committee; and president of the Anderson County Arson Task Force. He was chairman of the City of Anderson Safety Committee, chairman of the City of Anderson Employee’s Grievance Committee; and a member of the City Educational Committee. He was an active member of the South Carolina Municipal Association and was involved in numerous community activities.

He was an avid bowler in local, state and national tournaments, a South Carolina Bowling Association life member and Hall of Fame Member, serving as president. He was also an Anderson Bowling Association life member and Hall of Fame Member. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias.

Surviving are widow, Yvonne P. Gilreath of the home, and a son, Travis Pettigrew of Anderson.

He was the son of the late Warrior L. Gilreath and Carrie Chastain Gilreath. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Hicks Gilreath.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Civic Center of Anderson by the Rev. Sam Duncan; burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. The body will be placed in the civic center at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the McDougald Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Anderson County Fire Service Training Center, 210 McGee Road, Anderson, S.C. 29625.

Driver, Pernie

ELBERTON, Ga. — Pernie Maxwell Driver, 87, of 2508 Nickville Road, Dewy Rose, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Cobb Memorial Hospital.

Born in Elbert County, she was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Loretta D. Dove of Royston and Mary Ann Black; sons, George T. Driver and Julian Driver, both of Dewy Rose, and Leland E. Driver of Gainesville; sisters, Bobbie Adams of Bowman, Wilma Barbar of Fayetteville and Orene Moore of Dewy Rose; brothers, Eugene Maxwell of Elberton and Fred Maxwell of Dewy Rose; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was the widow of Thomas A. Driver and the daughter of the late Jasper T. Maxwell and Lessie Vaughn Maxwell. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Driver; a brother, J. Walter Maxwell; and two grandsons, Michael W. Driver and Robbie Lee Driver.

Services are at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Memorial chapel of Berry Funeral Home by the Revs. Willard Cryder and Tim Adams; burial will be in Deep Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home.

Chapman, Lois R.

Lois Reams Chapman, 78, of National Health Care, Anderson, died Sunday, April 21, 2002.

A native of Banks County, Ga., she was a homemaker and a member of Harvest Baptist Church in Anderson.

Surviving are son, Milton “Bo” Chapman of Anderson; daughter, Barbara Ann Alexander of Six Mile; sister, Lillian Patterson of Clemson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Wallace M. Chapman and the daughter of the late Boyd and Ila Mae Watson Reams. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Boyd Reams, and a sister, Bonnie Reams.

Services are at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central; burial will be in Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday before the service. Flowers are optional.

Simmons, Amy

ELBERTON, Ga. — Amy Jane Bell Simmons, 81, formerly of Caldwell Village Apartments, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, she was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was the widow of James Simmons and the daughter of the late Will and Laura Byrd Bell. She was preceded in death by a sister, Merline “Mert” Bell; five other sisters; and two brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday in the Marvin R. Mattison Memorial chapel of D.B. Walker and Company Funeral Services by the Rev. J.C. Ward; burial will be in Westview Cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family is at the home of her niece, Willie Lee Boston, 132 Knowlandwood Circle, Anderson.

Shaw, Mary J.

EDGEWATER, Fla. — Mary J. Shaw, 80, of Royal Palm Drive died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation in Daytona Beach.

Born in Iva, S.C., she was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and crafts. She was a member of Bella Vista Baptist Church in Edgewater.

Surviving are sons, William Shaw of Edgewater and Gary Shaw of South Carolina; brother, Floyd Jones of Anderson; sisters, Eleanor Allen of Anderson and twin sister, Martha Lawton of Iva; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, S.L. Jones.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, with Floyd W. Jones and the Rev. J. Floyd Stansell officiating; burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621.

Pooler, Mildred

LAVONIA, Ga. — Mildred Christine Gray Pooler, 81, of 440 Normandy Trail, Gumlog Community, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at the Hospice Atlanta in Atlanta.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville.

Simmons, Amy

Orba, Mary Crawford

ABBEVILLE — Mary Crawford Orba, 72, of 717 S. Main St. died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Elberton Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Evanston, Ill.

Surviving are son, Bennie Crawford of Greenwood; daughters, JoAnne Jones of Greenwood and Frances Jean Crawford of Abbeville; sisters, Effie Adams and Frances Goolsby, both of Abbeville, and Geraldine Latimer of Belton; brothers, Norris Odell Crawford and Frank Crawford, both of Abbeville; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Roy Orba and the daughter of the late Frank and Lula Pruitt Crawford.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden.

The family is at the home.

Abbeville and White Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Holcomb, Bryant

CLAYTON, Ga. — Jefferson Bryant Holcomb, 83, of U.S. 76 West, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, in Lilburn.

Born in Rabun County, he was a rock mason, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a former member of the American Legion. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sister, Ann Holcomb Burrell of Charlie Mountain Road, Clayton, several stepchildren, and nephews.

He was the widower of Nova Key Gragg Holcomb and the son of the late Robert and Earlie Jones Holcomb.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the Liberty Cemetery with the Rev. Olan Carnes officiating. The body is at Hunter Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The family is at the home of his sister, Ann Holcomb Burrell on Charlie Mountain Road, Clayton.

Burriss, Annie Mae

WILLIAMSTON — Annie Mae Elrod Burriss, 99, formerly of S.C. 81, died Friday April 19, 2002, at Riverside Nursing Center.

Born in Anderson County, she was retired from Wren School and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Joan Rhodes of Anderson; son, Thomas “Tom” Burriss of Williamston; sister, Edna Elrod English of Warrenton, Ga.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Thomas Claude Burriss and the daughter of the late Thomas Riley Lee and Maggie Pearl Owens Burriss.

Graveside services were held Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Anthony Tilley officiating.

The family suggests memorials be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Gray Mortuary of Pelzer was in charge of arrangements.

Brown, Roy

FAIR PLAY — James Roy Brown, 68, of 16042 S.C. 11 South died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at his home.

Born in Hart County, Ga., he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Anderson and was retired from J.P. Stephens, Appleton Plant and was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Surviving are sons, Frank Brown and Kenneth Brown, both of Fair Play; daughter, Susan Brown of Fair Play; brother, John R. Brown of Fair Play; and sisters, Delree Evans of Charlotte, N.C., and Mary Dunn of Anderson.

He was the widower of Dessie Whitfield Brown and the son of the late Julian Brown and Arlene Dickard Brown. He was preceded in death by a sister, Genevive Brown.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at The McDougald Funeral Home by the Rev. Don Corley; burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
