DUKES, Norman
BRANCHVILLE - Mr. Norman E. Dukes, 78 years of age, of 7308 Freedom Road, Branchville, died Sunday, November 17, 2002.
Mr. Dukes was born July 17, 1924, in Branchville, a son of the late Perry E. Dukes and Ida Siemers Dukes, and he was the widower of the late Amilee H. Dukes. He was the owner of the Dukes Farm Supply in Branchville, he served in the U.S. Navy, graduated from Branchville High School and from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Dukes served on Branchville Town Council for 30 years, served on the Board of Education for School District 8 for many years, a member of the American Legion, a member of the Branchville United Methodist Church where he was a past Treasurer and a past member of many other various committees at the church.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 19, 2002, 3 p.m., at the Branchville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Ott cemetery in Branchville.
Survived by three sons, William A. "Bill" Dukes of Columbia, Richard E. Dukes of Charlotte, N.C., and Charles F. Dukes of Branchville, one brother, Albert D. Dukes of Branchville, one grandson, Adam G. Dukes, and a number of nieces and nephews.

PARLER, SR., Joseph
Joseph Eugene Parler, Sr., of Charleston, and recently of Goose Creek, has died at age 87 in Hallmark Healthcare Center. Joseph E. Parler was born in Parler community near Santee, S.C., December 4, 1914, to Coleen Jones Parler and Leland Evans Parler. He was an only child. After attending school in Elloree, S.C., he attended the Citadel Military College for four years and studied Civil Engineering. Upon completion of his classes there Mr. Parler went to work building roads in rural areas of the state. In 1938 he began a career providing electricity to the low country and coastal areas of the state as an employee of SCE&G. Married in 1939 to Elaine Farris of Georgetown he was called to service in the Army Air Corps and then the U.S. Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He supervised construction for the Navy in the Aleutian Islands until the close of the war. Afterward Lt. JG Joseph Parler served with the Seabees on the east coast out of Charleston, Durham and Atlanta. In 1949 the Navy sent Lt. Parler (and his family) to build a Communications Station at Sabana Seca, near San Juan, Puerto Rico. When that task was done in 1952, Mr. Parler joined the peacetime firm of Alcoa to mine bauxite at the Cabo Rojo site in the Dominican Republic. In 1956 he traveled to Barracabermeja, Colubia, South America, in the employ of Raymond International. Always an adventurer ready for a new challenge, Joe Parler flew to Liberia, Africa, this time with Raymond International. In the mid-1960's Mr. Parler and his new wife Emily sailed across the Atlantic Ocean aboard their 40-foot ketch to Castries, St. Lucia, where Joe built several city offices. Then he and his wife bought shares of stock in a hillside hotel, Marigot des Roseau at Marigot Bay. When the British pound "fell" Joe sold his shares to the majority holder, British Airways. During the interim Emily died of cancer. Moving closer to the United States, Mr. Parler took a position as maintenance engineer at Watergate Villas, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. In 1989, Mr. Parler retired and flew to Charleston to care for his elderly mother. For a while he worked as a customer sales representative at the Montgomery Ward store in Charlestown Square. Since his mother's death in 1992 he maintained his Savannah Highway residence until the end of the year 2000. He was a resident of Alterra Clare Bridge and Goose Creek Manor Living Facilities. Joseph E. Parler, Sr., is survived by one son, Joe Jr., of Miami, Fla., two daughters in the Charleston area, Barbara Child and Betty Jo Parnelle, several grandchildren, Mark P. Tolbert, II, of Ft. Lauderdale, Buffy Parnelle of Charleston, Jordana and Shawn Parler of Miami, and Jill and Andy Childs of Goose Creek. A private celebration of his life and interment of cremated remains will be held at a later date. The CREMATION CENTER OF CHARLESTON is serving the Parler family.
WILSON, Mary
WALTERBORO - Mrs. Mary Perry Wilson, 81, of 113 Dorsey Street, died Sunday, November 17, 2002 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 o'clock Tuesday, November 19, 2002 in THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES, WALTERBORO CHAPEL, with the Reverend Dennis Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Doctors Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Wilson was born November 20m 1920 in Darren, Georgia and was a daughter of the late F.L. and Mavel Dukes Perry. She was a member of the Zion Baptist Church and was the widow of Mr. Paul Julius Wilson.
Survivors include a sister, Eufie Ladon of Lakewood, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Idalia W. Catterton of Walterboro; and several nieces and nephews.

RAINS, SC - Mrs. Lettie French Thomas, 87, widow of Cecil Webb Thomas, died Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Marion County Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, November 18 at Reedy Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Darrell Floyd and Rev. Guy Langston officiating. Burial will follow in Reedy Creek cemetery, directed by COX-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME.
Visitation will follow immediately after the service at the cemetery.
Mrs. Thomas was born August 13, 1915 in Marion County, a daughter of the late James Olen Smith and the late Molly Smith Smith. Mrs. Thomas was a loving mother. She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Lillian Hilliard Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Thomas was a graduate of Centenary High School.
Surviving Mrs. Thomas are: 2 sons: Wayne Thomas of Marion and Tim Thomas of Mullins; a daughter, Peggy Sutcliffe of Orangeburg; 5 grandchildren: Nancy Jordan, Vicki Holt, Julie Thomas, Rebecca Jordan, Will Holt and Hannah Holt; a brother, Ira Olen Smith of Rains; 2 step-grandchildren: Cliffe Sutcliffe and Chris Sutcliffe; a step-great-grandchild; Charlie Sutcliffe; and a devoted friend, Lois Thomas of Rains.
Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by a daughter, Gail T. Baxley.

GEORGETOWN - Timothy Deas, of Georgetown, a retired tree cutter in pulpwood, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Monday, November 18, 2002 at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Woodland Community of Georgetown County, SC. Funeral directed by WILDS' DAUGHTER HOME FOR FUNERALS, Georgetown, SC.
Mr. Deas was born August 12, 1938 in Georgetown, SC. He attended Georgetown Public Schools. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Tula Deas and Mrs. Susan Ladson Deas.
Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Gasque and Ms. Laurie Ann Deas, both of Georgetown, SC; five sisters: Mrs. Mary Fraser of Andrews, SC, Mrs. Lethia McGirt, Mrs. Gertrude Davis, and Mrs. Eula Mae Linen, all of Georgetown, SC, and Mrs. Carrie Myers of Burgess, SC; two brothers, Frank and Silas Deas of Georgetown.
JONES, JR., Ken
Ken Jones, Jr., 26, died Saturday, November 16, 2002 in Berkeley County from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at 11:00 AM in Jones Family cemetery near the family home. Burial will be directed by GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME OF GEORGETOWN.
He was born November 11, 1976 in Georgetown County, a son of Clyde Kennely Jones, Sr. and Wilma Jean Belcher Jones.
He was an employee with Jacobs Applied Technology of Goose Creek. He was a graduate of Macedonia High School and a volunteer fireman with the town of Jamestown. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as his hobbies. He was of the Holiness faith.
Surviving are: his finace', Hannah Sims of St. Stephens; his parents of Jamestown; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy C. Jones of Jamestown; his maternal grandmother, Martha T. Belcher of Jamestown; one sister, Jennifer Nancy Hoeger and her husband Jonathan A. Hoeger of Raleigh, SC and two nephews.
The family will receive friends at their home, 619 Amber Hill Lane near Jamestown.
