Lillie B. Byrd
Homemaker

LAURENS - Lillie Burns Byrd, 96, widow of Charlie F. Byrd, of Laurens and resident of Wesley Commons, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Esther Howard Burns. She was a homemaker and a member of Central United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Gary B. Byrd and wife Joyce of Union and David F. Byrd and wife Mary of Waco, Texas; a sister, Helen Godfrey of Laurens; one grandson, three granddaughters, three great grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Billy Ray Osborne and the Rev. Dr. William L. McDonald with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of her sister, 580 Bethel Church Road, and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary tonight from 7 until 8:30. Memorials may be made to Wesley Commons, Greenville Methodist Home, 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, S.C. 29646. Kennedy Mortuary, Laurens, has charge of arrangements.

Henry L. Green
Retired from Cudd Metal Works

GLENDALE - Henry Lee Green, 73, of 173-B Highland St., Glendale, former resident of Union, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003 at 5 p.m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after an extended illness. Mr. Green was born in Union on April 3, 1930, a son of the late Rufus and Martha Angeline Gunter Green. He was a member of the Gospel Light Tabernacle of Spartanburg and was retired from Cudd Metal Works in Union.

Surviving are his wife, Judith Dawkins Green of Union; three daughters, Teresa Jennings, Starla Gahagan and Tajma Stepp, all of Wellford; two sons, Steven Green of the home and Michael Green of Union; two brothers, Carrol Green and Donnie Green, both of Union; three step-children, Harold Keisler and Dennis Keisler, both of Union and Cathy Scarborough of Bunelle, Fla.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Peggy Medford Bobo of Union.

Mr. Green was predeceased by two daughters, Alice Penwell and Phyllis Lemmons. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the Gospel Light Tabernacle, 100 Williams. St., Spartanburg, conducted by the Rev. Arnold Gahagan and the Rev. Dean Gahagan. Burial was in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesville.

Active pallbearers were Timmy Lemmons, Dennis Keisler, Brad Jennings, Joshua Stepp, Bobby Pollard and David Paige. The following served as the honorary escort: Harold Dean Keisler, Sam (Smiley) Scott and Billy Davis. The family is at the home of his daughter, Starla Gahagan, 165 Hampton St., Wellford, and received friends at the Gospel Light Tabernacle Sunday night. Memorials may be made to the Henry L. Green memorial fund, P.O. Box 293, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Ray S. Sprouse
Former Jonesville resident

SUMMERVILLE Ray S. Sprouse Jr., 70, of Hallmark Nursing Center, Summerville, formerly of Jonesville, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Nannie P. Good

Nannie Pendergrass Good, 87, formerly of Brittany Manor Apts., E-13, widow of Sims Good, died Nov. 17, 2002 in the Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary. Arlene Lee Hollins Retired from Pioneer Paper Arlene Lee Hollins, 81, formerly of 720 Lakeview Gardens, widow of Algy Hollins, died Nov. 14, 2002, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

She was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Dec. 21, 1920, a daughter of the late Charles and Ethel Lee. She was retired from Pioneer Paper Co. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda (Robert) Green of Union; Lorraine Cromer of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Kenneth Hollins of Newberry, Fla.; a sister, Vivienne Head of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Carolina Mortuary Chapel in Union with the Rev. Fred K. Murray officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery. The body will be placed in the chapel at noon Wednesday to await the hour of service.

Viewing and visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday and on Wednesday from 9 until 11:30 a.m. The family is at the home of her daughter, Brenda Green, 110 Forest Circle. The Carolina mortuary has charge of the arrangements.

Magdaline G. Millwood
Homemaker

AIKEN - Magdaline Goins Millwood, 75, of 155 Hill Rd., Aiken, widow of Roger William Millwood, died Nov. 16, 2002. Mrs. Millwood was a native of Union, a daughter of the late David and Esther Johnson Goins. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Buffalo.

Surviving are three daughters, Diane Dorland of Aiken, Anzie Parks of Columbia and Lynn Culpepper of Aiken; a brother, Howard Goins of Buffalo; four sisters, Ruth Goins, Betty Revis and Peggy Goins all of Buffalo and Thelma Brock of New Ellenton; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Rivers Funeral Home with her son-in-law, Rev. Aubrey Parks and Rev. Randy Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tommy Brock, Larry Goins, Gerald Goins, Eddie Goins, Church Ison and David Dorland.

The family is at the home. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at the funeral home. Rivers Funeral Home, Aiken, has charge of arrangements. Marion Young Marion Young, also known as Cy Young, died Nov. 17, 2002, in the Wallace Thomson Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Union Community Funeral Home. The family is at the home, 100 Wilson St.

Louise Feagan

GASTONIA, N.C. - Sarah Louise Feagan, 84, widow of Gray Feagan, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2003. Survivors include a sister, Nell Gosnell of Union, two daughters and a grandchild. The family will receive friends an hour prior to memorial services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon.

Ray S. Sprouse Jr.
Former Jonesville resident

SUMMERVILLE - Ray S. Sprouse Jr., 70, of Hallmark Nursing Center, 255 Midland Parkway, Summerville, formerly of Jonesville, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003 at 2:14 p.m. Mr. Sprouse was born in Charleston on Nov. 15, 1933, a son of the late Ray S. Sprouse Sr. and Mary King Dickinson Sprouse. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired insulation worker.

Surviving are a son, Billy Ray Sprouse of Paris, Texas; two daughters, Mary Ann Joudeh and Deborah Pikington, both of Powderly, Texas; two sisters, Mary Elma Stice of North Charleston and Barbara Bigham of Conway; a brother, William Roger (Billy) Sprouse and his wife Barbara Roberts Sprouse of North Charleston; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Jonesville, conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer. The family will receive friends at New Hope United Methodist Church from 2 until 3 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Allen H. Briggs
U.S. Navy veteran

SPARTANBURG - Allen Henry Briggs of Spartan-burg and Lake Lanier died Nov. 17, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Union County, he was the son of Bufford E. and Emma S. Briggs. He was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church of Spartanburg, a graduate of Wofford College and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce; children, Donna and Guy Workman and David and Nancy Briggs; and six grandchildren. A memorial service was held today at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 400 Dupree Dr., Spartanburg, S.C. 29307, or to Hillbrook Baseball Inc., PO Box 18033, Hillcrest Station, Spartanburg, S.C. 29318. The J.F. Floyd Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Suzanne W. Bolger
Union native

CHARLESTON - Suzanne Warren Bolger, 63, of Charleston, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at a local hospital. She was born July8, 1940 in Union, the daughter of the late Neil Comer and Mariam Alberta Brasington Warren. She was a 1958 graduate of the High School of Charleston and went on to win numerous awards for her writing talents.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Cherry and Patrick Cherry and his wife, Melanie; a brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Cherry Warren; grandchildren, Britany, Nicole, Austin and Cameron, and her special young friend, Daryn Hall. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, Suzanne's family asks that memorial contributions in her name be made to the Kidney Foundation of S.C., Thurmond Mall Blvd., Suite 106, Columbia, S.C. 29201. The family is being served by the Palmetto Cremation Society. This announced courtesy of the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Effie H. Lawrence
Oakmont resident

Effie Hughes Lawrence, 95, of Oakmont Nursing Home, formerly of the Wilksburg community, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Rowell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. King's Funeral Home of Chester has charge of arrangements.

Russell A. Ross
Retired brick mason

Russell Allen (Pug) Ross, 60, of 107 Washington St., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at his home. A native of Union and a graduate of Sims High School, he was the son of Mable P. Burris and the late Willie Ross. Mr. Ross was a retired brick mason.

Surviving in addition to his mother of the home are a brother, Ron Burris of Asheville, N.C.; an aunt, Floree Eaves of Greensboro, N.C.; and two nephews, Antonia L. Williams and Carlos Williams. Viewing for Mr. Ross will be today until 7 p.m. and on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery Friday at 10 a.m. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
