After graduating from Columbia High School, he attended Duke University where he received an A.B. Degree in 1942 and his M.D. degree in 1944. Postgraduate work was done at Duke University Hospital and Medical School, Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University, and the Rhode Island Hospital, which was at that time only one of six approved Cardiology Fellowships in the United States. After serving two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he was discharged as a Captain at Fort Monroe, Virginia, where he served as Chief of the Medical Service and Post Attending Surgeon.
Among other awards, he was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and was the first South Carolinian to take and pass examinations certifying him to be a diplomat of the American Board of Cardiovascular Disease. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He served as President and later Chairman of the Board of the South Carolina Heart Association; a member of the Board and Vice President of the American Heart Association; and Chairman of the Mid Atlantic Region of the American Heart Association. He was Chairman of the Board of the Friends of the Baruch Institute and a member of the Board of the Friends of the Thomas Cooper Library. He was honorary curator, Special Collections, Thomas Cooper Library.
Dr. Irvin began private practice in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in 1950 and retired in 1989. During those years he served on the staffs of Providence, Baptist, and Columbia Hospitals; and was Chief of Staff of Richland Memorial Hospital. He established the charity Heart Clinic in Columbia shortly after beginning practice and served as the director of this clinic as well as Cardiac Consultant for the South Carolina Rheumatic Fever Clinic. He was the Senior Founding Member of the Columbia Clinic.
During his medical career he was the author and co-author of many scientific papers published in national medical journals. His long interest in the relationship of stress and cardiovascular disease led to the production, along with other physicians, of many national symposiums, meetings, courses, and workshops held in South Carolina.
Dr. Irvin was a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. For many years he was an active member of the Columbia Medical History Club. He was a member of the Richland County Medical Society and the South Carolina Medical Society and was active in civic affairs. Other memberships included Forest Lake Club, Pine Tree Hunt Club, Palmetto Club, Faculty House of the University of South Carolina, the Cotillion Club, and the Columbia Ball. He was a former member of the Quadrille and Columbia Rotary Club. Recently Dr. and Mrs. Irvin were elected members of the Horseshoe Society of the University of South Carolina.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon.
Being an avid fisherman, he enjoyed both fresh and saltwater fishing and especially fly-fishing both locally and at various areas in the United States and abroad. He was an experienced gardener and enjoyed raising roses and keeping a greenhouse, but his most enjoyable hobby was rare book collecting. His collection contains almost all of the first editions of Charles Darwin, as well as many others. His collection also contains a wide variety of more recent works on Darwin, evolution, genetics, and other subjects concerning the development and understanding of modern scientific thought. This valuable collection was exhibited at the Thomas Cooper Library of U.S.C. in 1992 and the 120 books were donated to the University in 1998. At that time, the C. Warren Irvin, Jr. and Josephine B. Irvin Endowment Fund was established and will continue to support the collection, maintenance, and study of the books and the subject matter. This collection is recognized as one of the premiere collections in the United States.
In 1998, Dr. and Mrs. Irvin made a substantial gift to the University of South Carolina, designated primarily to enhance the stature of the Thomas Cooper Library.
Because of his lifelong quest for learning, Dr. Irvin regularly attended classes at the University of South Carolina over the past fifteen years and was active in organizing the Palmetto Forum, a group of University of South Carolina faculty and local civic leaders who are interested in global affairs. He was recently presented the Honorary Life Member Award by the USC Alumni Association.
Dr. Irvin was a founding Board Member and Medical Director of Continental American Insurance Group, Inc.
In addition to the interests noted, he enjoyed travel, visiting Russia, China, British Isles, Europe, Mexico and a variety of interesting places in the United States and Canada. He also visited The Galapagos Islands.
