BARUTIO, Beverly
Beverly Ann Bell Barutio, of Edisto Beach, S.C., died in peace at her home on November 13, 2002. Mrs. Barutio was born in Fairfield, Iowa, on March 8, 1936. She was the daughter of Donald and Glorena Bell. She had been a resident of Savannah, Ga.; Homer, Alaska; and Spring Creek, North Carolina, where she built the famous wayside chapel in honor of St. Jude.
Beverly was a poet, an artist, and self-proclaimed "world's first female philosopher." She lived in Alaska for seven years, working as a crab folder, a herring smacker, and a cook on the fish tender "Daisy" on the Bering Sea.
She returned to the "Lower 48" in 1980 to Savannah, where she met and married
Bill. They began 21 years of an abundant, wonderfully happy life together. Great friends filled her life with live and generosity. Her family has been a healthy, vibrant tribe that made her glow with pride until her dying breath. She loved good food, good wine, and good music. All that makes life full. Her heroes were few. Her Bill was always number one.
Survivors include, husband, William H. Barutio, daughter, Joie Houck of Weaverville, N.C., and sons, Pete LaBarbera of Kenai, Alaska, John L. LaBarbera and David LaBarbera of Savannah, Ga., and Michael Barutio of Loganville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 14, in FOX AND WEEKS FUNERAL DIRECTORS HODGSON CHAPEL.
Vigil services will be held 6 p.m., Thursday, November 14, in Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel with Celebrant Father Herbert Wellmeier.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 15, in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist with Celebrant Father Herbert Wellmeier. Burial will be held privately in Catholic cemetery.
A celebration of her life will follow from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, at her home in Edisto Beach. All of her friends and relatives are encouraged to attend.

PROSSER, Eugene
FLORENCE, SC - Services for Eugene Arnold Prosser, 61, will be Friday, November 15, 2002 at 3:00pm in the Cain-Poston Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens with Masonic and Military Rites. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 14, from 6-8:00pm, at the funeral home.
Mr. Prosser died Monday in Darlington County. He was born July 16, 1941, in Florence County, SC, son of the late Fairey and Gladys Evans Prosser. He was the husband of Mary Lee Prosser.
Mr. Prosser was a graduate of University of Maryland and Limestone College. Following his military career he taught NJROTC at South Florence for 7 years, worked for PDRTA & Sumter RTA. He was currently employed by Combined Insurance Company. He attended Peace Freewill Baptist Church.
He served in the US Navy for 20 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served on the USS Constellation and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Mr. Prosser was a member and Past Master of Hampton Lodge #204 A.F. & A.M. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, York Rite, and was District Grand Master for 25th Masonic District.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home; two sons, Eugene A. Prosser, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, and Anthony W. Prosser of Aurora, Il; one sister, Linda P. McKee of Westminister, SC; and 6 grandchildren. Preceding him in death is one brother, Billy Prosser.
PHILLIPS, Marvin
Mr. Marvin Urlman Phillips of Beaver Dam Road, Bonneau, SC, a retired Superintendent with Banks Construction Company, died Wednesday morning in a Charleston hospital.

NICHOLS - Paul Vincent Stroud, age 54, of Nichols, SC, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002. Born in Marion County, he is the son of the late J.P. and Addie Johnson Stroud, a farmer, and served in the U.S. Navy.

Jeanette Holmes Abner, 53, of Florence, SC and formerly of Round O, SC, died Monday.

Mrs. Abner was born in Colleton County and was a daughter of the late Isaiah and Hurline Holmes of Round O. She attended the public schools in Colleton County and was employed with J & JJ Enterprise.
She was a member of the House of God Christian Center, Philadelphia, PA. She served as the Pastors Assistant, Bible Study Teacher and Senior Secretary of the Church Organization.
Survivors are: her husband, Elder W.J. Abner of Florence, SC; two daughters, Charlotte Winchester, Columbia, SC and Lynette Angela Winchester, Washington, SC; three sisters, Geraldine Holmes and Marcella Aiken of Round O and Marilyn Frasier (Sammie Lee) of Walterboro; two brothers, Thomas Holmes, Sr. (Betty Ann) and Arnold Holmes (Melenthia) of Round O; a mother-in-law, Rudell Abner Chester, PA; one uncle, George Washington, Sr. (Annabelle) of Pittsburgh, PA; three aunts, Masaline Cochran, Round O, Estelle Capers, New York, NY, and Pearl Washington, Newark, NY; and a cousin, Maude Perkins, Round O.

Etheline Scott Whitehead, 76, of North Charleston, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at a local hospital.
A funeral service will be held Friday, November 15, 2002, 2 PM at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL.
Born September 3, 1926, in Summerville, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Ben Scott and Early Driggers Scott.
Mrs. Whitehead was a homemaker. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother. Mr. Whitehead was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include, a daughter, Charlene Whitehead of North Charleston; daughter-in-law, Charlene Coney Whitehead of North Charleston; three sons: George Eugene Whitehead and wife Kim of Goose Creek, Allen Dale Whitehead of North Charleston and Gilbert Frank Whitehead of Burbank, California; two sisters: Ageline Slobecheski of North Charleston and Diane Bromlow of Moncks Corner; five brothers: Bruce Scott of Moncks Corner, Erin Scott of Summerville, Peter Scott of Cottageville, Boyce Scott of New Jersey and Lester Scott of Kansas; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Whitehead was predeceased by her husband, Robert Eugene Whitehead and a son. Wendell Robert Whitehead.
