Jesse Douglass Brown, 44, of 3952 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, died Nov. 17, 2002, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.
J.W. Calhoun
BUFFALO - Thomas J.W. Calhoun Sr., 67, of 141 Dupree Farm Road, Buffalo, husband of Junie Inez Davis Calhoun, died Nov. 19, 2002, at 4:40 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Albert P. Dill
Albert Paul Dill, 79, of 121 Bowling Ave., widower of Margaret Harmon Dill, died at his residence Nov. 20, 2002, after an extended illness. Mr. Dill was born in Union on April 24, 1923, a son of the late William and Corrie French Dill.
He was a member of Unity United Methodist Church and a life-time member of Masonic Lodge #75. Mr. Dill was a graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired foreman of the Water and Sewer Dept. for the City of Union.
Surviving are a son, Butch Dill of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Dill Brannon and Jerry Brannon of Winnsboro; two grandsons, Jay Brannon and wife, Shandra of Union and Josh Brannon of Columbia; a sister, Ruth West of Dothan, Ala.; and a brother, Calvin Dill of Spartanburg. Graveside services with Masonic Rites will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Richard Lewis.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-9. The family will be at the home, 121 Bowling Ave., Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Unity United Methodist Church, 206 Hart St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Nannie P. Good
Nannie Pendergrass Good, 87, formerly of Brittany Manor Apts. E-13, widow of Sims Good, died Nov. 17, 2002, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Union County on Feb. 7, 1915, a daughter of the late James and Sallie Hughes Pendergrass. She was a retired domestic worker and a member of Mt. Rowell Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.
Surviving are four sons, Roosevelt (Deloris) Good and Lenon (Carrie) Good both of Union, Sims (Annie Mae) Good Jr. of Aliquippa, Pa.; and Leroy Good of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; 36 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren; 54 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Rowell Baptist Church in the Lockhart community with the Rev. James Ponder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon Friday to await the hour of service.
Viewing and visitation will be Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday from 9-11 a.m. The family is at the home of her son, Lenon Good, 213 Blue Ridge Road, Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Kenneth Ray Gregory
JONESVILLE - Kenneth Ray (Kent) Gregory, of 308 Mimie Gault Road, Jones-ville, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002. He was born in Union County, a son of Azalee Alverson and the late William Walker. Mr. Gregory was self-employed and a member of Mark Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Vincent Gregory of Baltimore, Md.; and Charles Haskins of Jonesville; two sisters, Rebecca (Larry) Foster of Jonesville and Ida Mae (Joe) Walker of Santuc; a brother, Robert Greer of Detroit, Mich.; an aunt, Cevera (Andrew) Lipsey of Jonesville; three uncles, Marvin Gregory of Jonesville, Velver Gregory of Union and Henry Walker.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mark Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wake services will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. tonight. The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday to await the hour of service. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Rev. George Henderson Sr.
ALIQUIPPA, Pa. - Rev. George K. Henderson Sr., 90, husband of Opra Lee Franklin Henderson, of Aliquippa, Pa., died Nov. 9, 2002 at his home. He was a son of the late Randolph and Minnie Jeter Henderson and attended schools in Union County.
He was a former member of Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church and joined Ebenezer A.M.E. Church. He was a former usher, Sunday School teacher, president of the senior choir, chairman of trustee board and stewards board. Rev. Henderson was ordained in 1977 and received his Elders license from Bishop Richard Allen Hilderbrand in 1986.
He was retired from the Aliquippa Works of Jones and Laughlin as a shearman. Rev. Henderson was a former member of local 1211 Steel Workers FAAYM, St. Marck Lodge #2 and the NAACP.
Surviving are two sons, George K. Henderson Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Wilfred M. Henderson of Aliquippa, Pa.; a brother, Randolph Henderson of Chicago; five sisters, Luegene and Bernice Gist, both of Santuc; Margie Gordon of Chicago, LaRoye Holman of Pennsylvania and Blondena Furtick of New York; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Bernard Gaitlon , Rev. Jesse L. McFarland, Rev. Edward Butler and Elder Arthur L. Maura. Salley R. Hilsman
SPARTANBURG - Salley Riley Hilsman, 74, of 61 Forest Oaks Way, Spartan-burg, died Nov. 18, 2002 at her home. Born in Albany, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Ralph Lawson Riley and Virginia Pottle Riley.
Throughout her life she was an active steward in the Catholic Church having been a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Spartanburg, a long time volunteer with Total Ministries and was a member of the Colonial Dames of South Carolina. Her time was spent being a Good Samaritan to family and friends.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Youel G. Hilsman of the home; four children and nine grandchildren, Youel Gilbert Hilsman, III, and wife, Joan Corbett Hilsman and their children, Adrienne Hoyt Taylor of Albany, N.Y.; Laura Elizabeth Hilsman and Youel Goodwin Hilsman, of Friendswood, Texas; Virginia Hilsman Gould and husband, Jeffrey David Gould and their children Salley Virginia Gould, Phillip David Gould and John Hilsman Gould, all of Greenville; Ralph Edward Hilsman and wife, Dr. Susan Olson Hilsman, and their children, Kenneth Riley Hilsman and Benjamin Calhoun Hilsman of Spartanburg, Robert Rust Hilsman and wife, Pamela Clusterman Hilsman and their son, Walter Grant Hilsman of Duncan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church conducted by the Rev. Michael R. DeAntonio. Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. A Family Committal service will be held in the Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Ga.
Those who wish may make memorials to the Building Fund of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 161 North Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to Total Ministries, 420 Union Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and also at the home at 61 Forest Oaks Way. Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Thomas L. Alexander
WHITMIRE - Thomas L. Alexander, 69, of 81 Tidmarsh Dr., died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, in Palmetto Richland Hospital. He was a retired employee of Cone Mills was a member and active deacon of the First Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Patricia S. Alexander of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lea Ann Miller and Chaplain Robert Miller of Germany; three grandchildren Robby Miller, Kimberly Miller and Robin Alexander; two sisters, Dove Plemons of Whitmire and Nell Jenkins of Union; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Rikard of Newberry.
Mr. Alexander was predeceased by a son, Craig Alexander. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire.

Lois A. Middlebrooks
Lois Allison Middlebrooks, 92, resident of Oakmont Nursing Home, widow of Gordie Middlebrooks, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 at 8:30 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. A native of Cherokee County, she was born on April 30, 1911, a daughter of the late C.Y. and Viola Byars Allison. Mrs. Middlebrooks was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted b the Rev. Benny Greene. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Union Memorial Gardens immediately following the graveside service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Dorothy H. Spindler
SYLVESTER, Ga. - Dorothy Hollingsworth Spindler of 1307 Waddell Avenue, Albany, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at Palmyra Nursing Home. The graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in New Hope Cemetery in Worth County, Dr. Ron Baxley will officiate. Mrs. Spindler was born in Union to Lillian Willard Hollingsworth and Lawrence Cuthpert Hollingsworth. She had lived in Albany since 1956. She was a homemaker and a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ray D. Spindler of Albany; two sisters, Esther Morrison and Hortence Sinclair, both of Union; two brothers, Henry Hollings-worth and Jim Hollings-worth, both of Union; grandson, Todd Spindler (Chalet) of Albany and Jason Bruce (Cathy) of Washington, D.C.; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Spindler of Leesbur; and great granddaughter, Nava McCleary Spindler.
She was preceded in death by two sons, David L. Spindler, (Aug. 9, 1989), Nick Spindler (April 15, 2002) and a brother, Dolph Lawrence Hollingsworth. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. today at Banks Funeral Home.
