WESTON, JR., Tucker
WEST COLUMBIA - Services for Dr. Christian Tucker Weston, Jr., 83, of the S.C. Episcopal Home at Still Hopes, will be held Sunday, November 10, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, November 9, at 1735 Roslyn Drive, Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.
Dr. Weston, a long and respected leader in community, state, national, and international affairs, died November 7, 2002. Born May 24, 1919, in Hopkins, S.C., he was a son of the late Christian Tucker and Mary Postell Hopkins Weston. He was a graduate of Lower Richland High School; The Citadel, 1939; and the Medical University of South Carolina, 1943.
A prominent orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Weston practiced medicine in Columbia from 1947 until his retirement in December 2000. He was commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served from 1945-47. He was surgeon and president of the Surgeon’s Association for the CSX Railroad Company and the Norfolk Southern Railway System.
Active in medical affairs, Dr. Weston was a member of the Columbia Medical Society, served as Speaker of the House of Delegates and president of the S.C. Medical Association, and delegate to the American Medical Association. He was recipient of the S.C.M.A. Physician of the Year Award for Community Service and the S.C.M.A. President’s Award for Distinguished Service.
He served in key leadership positions in numerous other medical activities including Chief of Staff, Baptist Medical Center, and was a member of the American College of Forensic Examiners, American Academy of Disability Evaluation Physicians and Industrial Medicine Association.
In contributions to higher education, Dr. Weston was widely known and esteemed among alumni and friends of The Citadel. He envisioned and founded The Citadel Development Foundation, devoted to academic enrichment. He served as its first president for 11 years and was Director Emeritus at the time of his death. The CDF assets reached some $150 million before merging into the new The Citadel Foundation.
Dr. Weston served as president of both the Association of Citadel Men, an international alumni organization, and The Brigadier Club, supporting Citadel athletics. He was a member of The Citadel Board of Visitors. An honorary doctorate degree was conferred on Dr. Weston by the Citadel, and the Alumni Association named him an Honorary Life Member.
Dr. Weston’s community and civic service was wide ranging. After helping to found and serve as president of The Columbia Sertoma Club, he was the first South Carolinian to become president of Sertoma International, of which he was also a Life Member. He was a founder and president of Sertoma International Foundation.
In 1950, Dr. Weston was a key member of the group that established Heathwood Hall Episcopal School and served on their Foundation Board.
He was a key figure in the resurgence of the Republican Party in South Carolina and the election in 1974 of the first Republican governor since reconstruction. Beginning as county Republican Party Chairman, Dr. Weston rose to vice chairman of the state party and served continuously for 26 years as president of the S.C. Republican Convention, beginning in 1962. He served as delegate to the National Republican Convention and member of the Platform Committee.
In community affairs, Dr. Weston gave of himself unstintingly through leadership in such varied endeavors as the Carolina Children’s Home; Richland County TB Association; Council for Handicapped Children; Columbia Crippled Children’s Association; YMCA; American Red Cross; Better Business Bureau; United Fund; and others. He was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Young Man of the Year from Columbia Jaycees, Regional Sertoman of the Year, and the Order of the Palmetto from Governor James B. Edwards.
In honoring Dr. Weston, a S.C. Medical Association citation noted: His contributions in building citizenship and carrying out humanitarian undertakings in communities across America, and many across the world, attest well to the love of his fellow men and dedication to the well being of people wherever they are.
A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree, Dr. Weston was a former member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. In 1950, he served as organizing committee chairman for St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields, which he also served as junior warden. He was a trustee and board chairman for the Episcopal Church Home in York, S.C., and established the St. John’s, Congaree, Foundation.
He was a member of Forest Lake Club, Quadrille Club, the Tarantella; founder and past president of The Columbia Ball; and former member of The Summit Club, The Palmetto Club, and Carolina Yacht Club in Charleston.
Dr. Weston is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pauline Hanckel Weston (Polly); daughter Mary Weston Grimball, Columbia; daughter and son-in-law Frances Weston and Walter Roy Smith, Mooresville, NC; sons and daughters-in-law Christian Tucker Weston, III, and Anne Thornhill Weston, Columbia, and John Stuart Weston and Elizabeth Melendez Weston, Marathon, Florida Keys; grandchildren Edward Barnwell Grimball, Jr., Folly Beach; Roy Walter Smith, II, and Robert Weston Smith, Mooresville; and Sarah Jernigan Weston and Drayton Chamblee Weston, Columbia; step-grandson Emanuel Paz, Marathon; brother and sister-in-law the Reverend English Hopkins and Sallie King Weston, Hopkins. He was predeceased by daughter Pauline Hanckel Weston (Paula).

Phyllis Dorschimer Hosier, 89, of Charleston, SC formerly of Enumclaw, WA and widow of Theodore Calvin "Kelly" Hosier died Wednesday, November 6, 2002. Mrs. Hosier was born Friday, October 3, 1913 in Central City, NE the daughter of Bertram and Rose Skow Dorschimer. She was a retired bookkeeper with the Enumclaw Courier-Herald Newspaper in Washington. Mrs. Hosier was a member of The Mother Church of Christian Science in Boston, MA, the Order of the Eastern Star and P.E.O. in Washington. She was an avid bridge player and antique collector. Surviving is a daughter, Rose Ann Such and her husband John of Charleston; two grandsons: John Such, II of Charleston, SC and Paul Such of Cameron, NC; one granddaughter, Kelli Akers of John's Island, SC and eight great-grandchildren. OWENS, Vera
Mrs. Vera C. Golden Owens, 83, of 4651 Shark Hole Road in Meggett, died Thursday afternoon in St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Owens was born in Hampton County, January 26, 1919, a daughter of the late William Andrew Golden, Sr., and Pearl Bishop Golden. She had worked with the AAA Farm Office located in the Court House in Hampton for many years, and retired from the Dept. of Agriculture in Hastings, FL. She was a former member of the Hampton 1st Baptist Church, and was presently a member of the Hastings First Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Milton Owens.
Surviving are: 1 brother: Neal Golden, Sr. of Meggett; 1 sister: Freddie Golden DeLoach of Columbia; sister-in-law: Frances Golden of Hampton and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Owens was predeceased by: a son, Milton Owens, Jr.; brother, William A. Golden, Jr.; and a sister, Pearl Golden Lofton.
Funeral services will be 3 PM Sunday in the Chapel of PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton, conducted by Dr. Greg Clements and Rev. Jack Murray, with burial in the Hampton cemetery.

BOWERS, Antonia
Mrs. Antonia G. Bowers passed way peacefully on the afternoon of November 7, 2002, at the Medical University in Charleston. Born in Riga, Latvia, on November 18, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Martins Graudins and Anna (Sluka) Graudins. She fled to Germany during WWII to escape communist rule. There she met and married
Robert M. Bowers of Hampton, S.C., who was a U.S. soldier stationed there.

Mrs. Bowers was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Bowers, her sons, Robert M. Bowers, Jr., and Sidney F. Bowers.
