Mamie Eugene (Tula) Farr Sprouse, 91, of 3233 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, widow of J.G. Sprouse, died at her residence at an early hour Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, after a sudden illness. Mrs. Sprouse was born in Adamsburg on July 27, 1912, a daughter of the late James Franklin and Harriet Sprouse Farr. She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sprouse was former co-owner of Sprouse's Store at Adamsburg and after her retirement she was a care giver for the elderly. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Barbara Sprouse of Adamsburg; a grandson and his wife, Vernon and Robin Sprouse of Greenville; a granddaughter and her husband, Susan and Joey Hines of Inman; and two sisters, Alpha Mae Cudd and Ruby Evans, both of Union.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan West and the Rev. Jesse Bentley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 6 until 8 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home of her son, Gene Sprouse, 3217 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Adamsburg Community. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Joy Baptist Church Building Fund, 657 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Earl D. White Sr.
CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on the evening of Nov. 18, 2003, Earl Donald White Sr., 74, widower of Yvonne Elizabeth Becude White. Residence, Charleston Heights. The relatives and friends of Earl Donald White Sr., are invited to attend his funeral services Saturday in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., North Area Chapel, 2117 Dorchester Road, North Charleston at eleven o'clock. Interment, Bethany Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday at Stuhr's North Area Chapel between six and eight o'clock. Mr. White was born May 10, 1929, in Northampton, Mass., the son of the late Ralph and Mildred Ames White. In 1946, Mr. White joined the Wesley United Methodist Church in Amherst, Mass., and graduated from Amherst High School, Amherst in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He had 20 years of civil service. Earl was employed as an electrician at the Charleston Naval Shipyard Shop #02 from 1971 to 1989. He retired on June 4, 1989. After his retirement, he was a school bus driver for First Student, Inc. in Charleston from 1990-2003.
In Charleston, he was a member of the Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, a Life Member of the House Committee of the Captain John L. Weeks VFW Post #3142 and a member of the American Legion Post #112. His wife of 50 years, Yvonne Elizabeth Becude, died in 2000.
He is survived by three sons, Earl Donald White Jr. of Anderson, and his wife, Patricia Estes White, niece of Donald Estes of Union, Tony White of Charleston, and Joseph Eugene White of Piedmont; two daughters, Sharon Antoinette Martucci and Phyllis Lorraine White, both of Lindenwold, N.J.; one brother, Richard C. White of Millsboro, Del.; one sister, Ruth White O'Brien of Kittery, Maine; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Mr. White was predeceased by one brother, Ralph H. White Jr. Memorials may be made to Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 70396, North Charleston, S.C. 29415. Stuhr's North Area Chapel.
J.W. Calhoun
BUFFALO - Thomas J.W. Calhoun Sr., 67, of 141 Dupree Farm Road, Buffalo, husband of Junie Inez Davis Calhoun, died Nov. 19, 2002, at 4:40 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Calhoun was born in Bryson City, N.C. on Nov. 20, 1934, a son of the late Robert M. Calhoun and Nora Anthony Calhoun. He was a Baptist and was a retired self-employed logger.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Patsy C. Snowden of Buffalo; a step-daughter, Kathy Medlock of Beaufort; three sons, John Wayne Calhoun of Union, Thomas J.W. Calhoun Jr. of the home and Robert Calhoun of Buffalo; a sister, Ann C. Crisp of Buffalo; a niece, Rhonda C. Compton; five grandchildren, John Calhoun, Robert Bobo, Melissa Snowden, Sharon Snowden and Tammy Calhoun; five step-grandchildren, Samantha Medlock and Freddie Medlock, Scott Darling, Kaycee Darling and Jeremy Shoe; and seven great-grandchildren, Brittany Paige Bradburn, Marcus Payne Bradburn, Timothy Blake Ingle, Rebecca Love Boultrie, Katlyn Nicole Forter, Chyenne Medlock and Thomas James Medlock.
Mr. Calhoun was predeceased by a son, Eddie Calhoun and a granddaughter, Teresa Bradburn. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Randy Smith. After 2 p.m. today, the body will be at the home, 141 Dupree Farm Rd., Buffalo, where it will remain until the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Winona B. Gregory
INMAN - Winona Benton Gregory, 43, wife of Roger M. Gregory, of 131 Rainbow Circle, Inman, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Mrs. Gregory was a native of Ashland, Ken., a daughter of the late Luella Potts Hall. She was an employee of Wabco and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Gregory was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School Class of 1977 and Spartanburg Technical College.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Crystal Danielle Dixon of Greenville; a son, Ricky Dell Dixon II of Greenville; and two brothers, Anthony Ray Potts of Ohio and Elvia Dewayne Hall of Inman. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel by the Rev. Mitchell Edge and Pastor David Duncan.
Burial will be in Good Shepherd Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Thursday night from 7-9 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Puzzle Pieces Team, Relay for Life Cancer Society, American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615. The family is at the home. Eggers Funeral Home, Boiling Springs, has charge of arrangements.
Salley R. Hilsman
SPARTANBURG - Salley Riley Hilsman, 74, of 61 Forest Oaks Way, Spartanburg, died Nov. 18, 2002 at her home. Born in Albany, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Ralph Lawson Riley and Virginia Pottle Riley.
Throughout her life she was an active steward in the Catholic Church having been a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Spartanburg, a long time volunteer with Total Ministries and was a member of the Colonial Dames of South Carolina. Her time was spent being a Good Samaritan to family and friends.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Youel G. Hilsman of the home; four children and nine grandchildren, Youel Gilbert Hilsman, III, and wife, Joan Corbett Hilsman and their children, Adrienne Hoyt Taylor of Albany, N.Y.; Laura Elizabeth Hilsman and Youel Goodwin Hilsman, of Friendswood, Texas; Virginia Hilsman Gould and husband, Jeffrey David Gould and their children Salley Virginia Gould, Phillip David Gould and John Hilsman Gould, all of Greenville; Ralph Edward Hilsman and wife, Dr. Susan Olson Hilsman, and their children, Kenneth Riley Hilsman and Benjamin Calhoun Hilsman of Spartanburg, Robert Rust Hilsman and wife, Pamela Clusterman Hilsman and their son, Walter Grant Hilsman of Duncan.
Mass of Christian Burial was held today at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church conducted by the Rev. Michael R. DeAntonio. Sons and grandsons served as pallbearers. A Family Committal service will be held in the Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Ga. Those who wish may make memorials to the Building Fund of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 161 North Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to Total Ministries, 420 Union Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church and also at the home at 61 Forest Oaks Way. Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Annie R. Lawson
WHITMIRE - Annie Rhodes Lawson, 82, of 711 Broom St. Ext. and the widow of Bascom Lawson died Nov. 19 in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Lawson was born in Spartanburg County, the daughter of the late Q.A. and Minnie Watson Rhodes. She was a retired employee of Whitten Center, a member of the Friendship Baptist Church and the Friendship Club.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Pam Lawson of Clinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Carroll Roller of Whitmire; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a special niece, Maggielena Wilbanks of Whitmire. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, Ralph Lawson.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 3:30 p.m. in the Friendship Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 503 Duckett St., Whitmire, SC 29178. Gray Funeral Home, Whitmire, has charge of arrangements.
Ernest J. Stafford Sr.
PACOLET - Ernest James Stafford Sr., 55, of 201 Bryant Road, Pacolet, died at his residence Nov. 21, 2002, at 1:20 a.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Stafford was born in Spartanburg County on July 12, 1947, a son of Rosa Lee Miller Stafford of the home and the late Joseph Homer Stafford. He was a Baptist and was formerly employed with Ashmore Asphalt Company.
Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Ernest James Stafford Jr. and Donald William Stafford both of Pacolet and Roger Millwood of Union; two sisters, Lillian Crawford and Carolyn Beard both of Pacolet; four brothers, Doodle Stafford of Walterboro, Troy Lee Stafford of Shelby, N.C.; Robert Stafford of Pacolet and Buddy Lewis Stafford of Columbia; and 11 grandchildren.
The family is at the home, 201 Bryant Road, Pacolet. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
John E. Keasler Sr.
John E. Keasler Sr., 80, widower of Estelle Jackson Keasler of 230 Hancock St., died Thursday Nov. 20, 2003, at his home after a sudden illness. Mr. Keasler was born in York on Nov. 30, 1922, a son of the late Andrew Eugene and Samantha Jane Trollinger Keasler.
He was retired from Milliken & Co. Monarch Plant and also from Torrington Co. Mr. Keasler was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Melvin Dean Vess and Janet and John Addison, all of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, John E. Keasler Jr. and Stephanie of California and Tony and Kathy Keasler of Union; five sisters, Florence Adams of Florida, Ida Bell Jackson of Union, Kathleen Mosley of Durham, N.C., Josephine Smith of Union and Billie Ann Howell of Chester; two brothers, J. Roy Keasler of Union and Bobby Keasler of Richburg; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 pm. Monday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Eddie Saxon. Active pallbearers will be Johnathan Earls, Greg Addison, Barry Vess, Larry Vess, Tommy McCollum, Ryan Keasler and Mike Fowler.
The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Monday to form the honorary escort: Blake McCollum, Derrick Vess, Nick Fowler, James Basler, Arthur Basler, Roy Howell, and Donnie Thomason.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 9. The family will be the home of his daughter, Pat and Melvin Dean Vess, 323 Balsam St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
