Lois Allison Middlebrooks, 92, resident of Oakmont Nursing Home, widow of Cordie Middlebrooks, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 at 8:30 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. A native of Cherokee County, she was born on April 30, 1911, a daughter of the late C.Y. and Viola Byars Allison. Mrs. Middlebrooks was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church. She was a member of the Union County Senior Citizens Band where he served as pianist for many years.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy Toney of Moore, seven grandchildren, Terry Willard and Kim Willard, both of Forest City, N.C., Sharon Willard, Tammy Willard and Cindy Hutchinson, all of Union, Julie Minnick of Myrtle Beach and Niki Stanley of Spartanburg; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emmie Brooks of Union. Mrs. Middlebrooks was predeceased by two sons, Bob Willard and Harry Willard.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Grandsons were active pallbearers. The family received friends at Union Memorial Gardens following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Tula F. Sprouse
Mamie Eugene (Tula) Farr Sprouse, 91, of 3233 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, widow of J.G. Sprouse, died at her residence at an early hour Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003 after a sudden illness. Mrs. Sprouse was born in Adamsburg on July 27, 1912, a daughter of the late James Franklin and Harriet Sprouse Farr. She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mrs. Sprouse was former co-owner of Sprouse's Store at Adamsburg and after her retirement she was a care giver for the elderly.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Barbara Sprouse of Adamsburg; a grandson and his wife, Vernon and Robin Sprouse of Greenville; a granddaughter and her husband, Susan and Joey Hines of Inman; and two sisters, Alpha Mae Cudd and Ruby Evans, both of Union.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan West and the Rev. James Bentley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bo Ham, Ernest Morris, Sam Sprouse, Carl Evans, John Bobo and Doyle Crocker.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her son, Gene Sprouse, 3217 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Adamsburg Community. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Joy Baptist Church Building Fund, 657 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Jesse D. Brown
Jesse Douglass Brown, 44, of 3952 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, died Nov. 17, 2002, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Union County on Aug. 8, 1958, a son of Mary Ellen Brown and the late Ruben Jones. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two sisters, Mary Diane Brown of Union and Rosa Marie (Elroy) Harris of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Walter O'Dell Brown of Union and William Brown of Newark, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chester County community by the Rev. George Sims. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be today from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. The family is at the home, 3952 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Ernest J. Stafford Sr.
PACOLET - Ernest James Stafford Sr., 55, of 201 Bryant Rd., Pacolet, died at his residence Nov. 21, 2002, at 1:20 a.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Stafford was born in Spartanburg County on July 12, 1947, a son of Rosa Lee Miller Stafford of the home and the late Joseph Homer Stafford. He was a Baptist and was formerly employed with Ashmore Asphalt Company.
Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Ernest James Stafford Jr. and Donald William Stafford both of Pacolet and Roger Millwood of Union; two sisters, Lillian Crawford and Carolyn Beard both of Pacolet; four brothers, Doodle Stafford of Walterboro, Troy Lee Stafford of Shelby, N.C.; Robert Stafford of Pacolet and Buddy Lewis Stafford of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and a step-daughter, Amy Padgett of Pacolet.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel by the Rev. Dennis Tessnier. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Dewayne Beard, Jimmy Stafford, Ronnie Stafford, Buster Stafford, Mark Stafford and Bradley Stafford.
The family will receive friends at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel tonight from 6-8. The family is at the home, 201 Bryant Rd., Pacolet. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Marion (CY) Young Sr.
Marion (CY) Young Sr., of 100 Wilson St., husband of Eva M. Young, died Nov. 17, 2002, after a brief illness. A son of the late Cal and Sarah B. Young, he was a 1965 graduate of Sims High School and a Vietnam veteran. He was retired from Carlisle Finishing Co. and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Mr. Young was a member of the Members Only Men's Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Lisa (Scott) Walker of Gray Court, Lunette Smith, Mary Smith, Constance Moorman and Monica Moorman, all of Union; sons, Marion (Rita) Young Jr. of Frankfurt, Germany; Timothy (Renee) Bestill of California and Anthony (Greta) Bestill of Spartanburg; a brother, Calvin Young of Union; a sister, Rosa McKissick of Union; an uncle, Douglas Barnett of Cincinnati, Ohio; two aunts, Lizzie Barnett of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Annie Barnett of Aliquippa, Pa.; 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a god daughter, Canlay S. Danovant; three sisters-in-law, Ayrie Young of Union, Carrie Worthy and Emma Worthy of Chester; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Worthy and Johnny McCluney of Buffalo, N.Y.; special friends, Annie P. Smith, Shirley S. Young and Otis Hill; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. A.L. Brackett, DD, officiating and the Rev. James A. Calhoun, presiding. Members of the Sims High School Class of 1965 will serve as active pallbearers and flower girls. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Allison K. Kurtz
LILBURN, Ga. - Funeral services for Allison K. Kurtz, 42, wife of Brian Kurtz, formerly of Union, were held at 2 this afternoon. Mrs. Kurtz was a native of Kinston, N.C. She was a contract manager for MIS Associates of Duluth and played tennis with the ALTA for a number of years.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter from the Atlanta area and a brother in Houston, Texas. The Bill Head Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
William C. McAbee
GAFFNEY - William (Bill) Clyde McAbee, 48, husband of Cynthia Blackwell McAbee, of 184 Wilkins Farm Road, Gaffney, died Nov. 22, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A celebration of life service was held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Pleasants, Dr. Terry Duvall and Rev. Joe Crawford.
Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the William McAbee Children's Fund, c/o First Piedmont Federal Bank, 1229 Floyd Baker Blvd., Gaffney, SC 29341. White Columns Funeral Service, Gaffney, had charge of arrangements.
Clarence W. Morris
Clarence W. Morris, 85, former resident of Union, died Nov. 24, 2002, at 8:15 p.m. in National Health Care in Laurens after an extended illness. Mr. Morris was born in Union on July 30, 1917, a son of the late James Thomas Morris and Thaddie Horne Morris. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Morris was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired salesman for Pangburn Candy Co.
Surviving are three sisters, Elizabeth Morris Smith of Union, Ruth Morris McGowan of Kingston, N.Y.; and Annie Mae Morris Bradley of Rock Hill; two brothers, Virgil Morris of Union and Billy G. Morris of Clarksville, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al Smith, 207 Spruce St., Union. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, or to the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Hwy., Union, or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mae Flora L. Crisp
Mae Flora Lawson Hamrick Crisp, 88, of Oakmont Nursing Home, 709 Rice Avenue Ext., Union, and formerly of Buffalo, widow of O'Dell Crisp, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at 6:10 p.m. in the nursing home. Mrs. Crisp was born in Union on Aug. 4, 1915, a daughter of the late Deedie Foster Lawson and Cornelia O'Shields Lawson. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and from Conso Products.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Sue Hamrick S. Fitts of Livington, Texas; two grandsons, Neal Hamrick and wife Barbara, of LeGrange, Texas, and Chris Hamrick and wife Mindy, of Springs, Texas; six great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Muriel Lawson Babb and Ted Babb of Union; a special niece, Betty S. Haney of Union; a special nephew, the Rev. Jerry Lawson of Jonesville; and a special friend, JoAnn Huskey of Buffalo.
Mrs. Crisp was predeceased by a son, Larry O. Hamrick. She was first married to the late Neil Hamrick. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Jerry D. Lawson and the Rev. Wayne Jones. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Baptist Church, P.O. Box 428, Buffalo, S.C. 29321 or to Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379.
The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at Union Memorial Gardens immediately following the graveside service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Alicia A. Erwin
BOILING SPRINGS - Alicia Michelle Avant Erwin, 32, wife of Nelson Erwin, of 218 Birds Eye View, Boiling Springs, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Erwin was reared in Gainesville, Fla., a daughter of Hugh and LaVelle Avant of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. She was a nurse and was a member of New Beginnings United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Ashley Michelle Erwin; and a sister, Sondra Avant deLaroche of Ormond Beach, Fla. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at New Beginnings United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Florida. Rev. Ken Owens and Dr. Sondra deLaroche will officiate. Mrs. Erwin will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.
Visitation will be held tonight from 7-9 at the funeral home. The family is at the home. Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation, 1911 Barnwell St., Columbia, SC 29201. Eggers Funeral Home, Boiling Springs, has charge of arrangements.
