COKER, Garris
Mr. Garris C. Coker, age 83, died on October 28, 2002, at a nursing facility in Charleston.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, at the Friendship Baptist Church in North Charleston with burial at 4 p.m. at the St. John's United Methodist Church cemetery near Lake City, S.C., directed by FLOYD FUNERAL HOME OF OLANTA, S.C. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., at the church.
Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late William David Coker and Letha Jane Allen Coker. Mr. Coker was retired from the Paper Mill of North Charleston. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served as a Gunners Mate during World War II. He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church of North Charleston.
Mr. Coker was preceded in death by five sisters, Daphine Coker, Naomi Coker, Clytie Dickson, Lucille Lee, and Nell Winchester. Five brothers, L.J. Coker, Carlisle Coker, Moody Coker, Laurie Coker, and Carroll Coker.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Coward of North Charleston; two sons, Dale (Joann) Coker of Coupeville, Wash., and Joe Coker of North Charleston. Two grandchildren, Christine Armijo and Paul Coker.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Friendship Baptist Roof Fund, 5032, Lackawanna Blvd., North Charleston, S.C. 29405, or the St. John's United Methodist Rebuilding Fund, P.O. Box 159, Scranton, S.C. 29591, attention Chris Wreschler.

WILLIAMSON, Ellie
The relatives and friends of Ellie Mae Williamson, widow of Robert Allen Williamson, are invited to attend her graveside services Thursday at 1 o'clock in White Church cemetery, Ravenel, SC.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 3896 Leeds Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.

HERRING, JR., Oren
Col. Oren L. Herring, Jr., United States Army, 78, husband of Virginia Simmons Herring of Mt. Pleasant departed this life on October 28, at a local nursing home. A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he was born March 17, 1924, to the late Oren L. Herring, Sr., and Beatrice Reid Herring. Col. Herring entered The Citadel in 1941. His education was interrupted by WWII when he and others in his sophomore class enlisted in 1943. In 1944 he landed at Cherbourg, France, where he served in Company A of the 324th Infantry of the 44th Division. Col. Herring received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars. He re-entered The Citadel in 1946 under the GI Bill and graduated with the class of 1948. Col. Herring was employed by The Citadel in 1949 where he taught for 39 years and was head of the Department of Electrical Engineering. He earned a master of electrical engineering degree in 1957 from the University of Michigan, and completed his doctoral studies at the University of South Carolina. In 1958, Col. Herring received The Citadel's Outstanding Teaching Award. He belonged to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education and Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi honor societies. He was a registered professional engineer in South Carolina. Surviving Col. Herring is his wife of 52 years, a daughter, Virginia Herring Roberson and her husband Ray of Canadys, S.C., a son, Oren Hamilton Herring and his wife Adelaide of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., a sister, Beatrice Herring Rowsey of Inman, S.C., and two cousins, five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also survived by his many former students and colleagues of the Citadel. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Friday, November 1, at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. HOWE, Osgood

KLINE, Leonard
Entered into eternal rest on Monday afternoon, October 28, 2002, Leonard Effon Kline, widower of Mary Travis Bates Kline. Residence, Goose Creek, S.C. The funeral and burial at the graveside will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to K.K. Beth Elohim Temple, 86 Hasell St., Charleston, S.C. 29401.
Mr. Kline was born in Greensboro, N.C., October 1, 1920, to the late Harry M. Kline and Mrs. Mary Manekin Kline. He was a World War II Navy Sea Bee veteran and was the owner and operator of Goose Creek Recycling Company. Among his other interests were memberships in the 40 & 8 Voiture, the American Legion Post #166, Goose Creek, S.C., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his son, Robert Lynn Kline of Ladson, S.C., a brother, Charles Kline of Charlotte, N.C., five grandchildren, Sarah Wall, Jennifer Kline, Jody Kline, Jamie LaGraff and Robin Kline as well as three great-grandchildren.

BRYANT, III, Thomas
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of October 29, 2002, Thomas Mitchum Bryant, III, husband of Elizabeth (Beth) Ripley Bryant, residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mitchum Bryant, III, are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Saturday, November 2, 2002, at 11 o'clock in Bethel United Methodist Church. Interment, Riverview Memorial Park. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Friday between 6 and 8 o'clock.
Mr. Bryant was born November 7, 1943, in New Orleans, LA, the son of Thomas M. Bryant, Jr., and Frances McGarity Bryant. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and Bethel Men's Club. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1965. He was an Agent with Penn Life Insurance Company.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; one son, Thomas Mitchum Bryant, IV, and his wife Joanna of Charleston, SC; one daughter, Chandler Bryant Dabit and her husband, Yousef of Charleston, SC; his parents of Greeneville, TN; one brother, Robert J. Bryant and his wife Kathy of Knoxville, TN; In-Laws, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Ripley of Charleston, SC; brother-in-law and sister-in-law John L. and Tina Ripley, Jr., of Charleston, SC; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Russell McGarity Bryant.
Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church "Organ Fund, " 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, S.C. 29401.

THOMAS, Lucille
GRAYS - Mrs. Lucille Smith Thomas, wife of Roy B. Thomas, died Tuesday morning after an extended illness. She was 80.
Mrs. Thomas was born November 30, 1921, in Scriven County, GA, a daughter of the late Green B. and Lozie Mock. She was first married to the late Jim T. Smith. Mrs. Thomas was a retired seamstress of Holiday Wear in Ridgeland, and was a member of Pine Level Baptist Church near Grays.
Surviving, besides her husband of Grays are: 1 son: James Robert Smith of Beaufort; 2 daughters: Peggy "Lee" Jarrell and Doris "Jimmy" Bowers, both of Nixville; 1 step-son: Roy B. Thomas, Jr. of Hardeeville. There are 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren as well as 4 step-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2pm in the Pine Level Baptist Church, with burial following in the Grimes cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6 - 9pm at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 1123, Bamberg, SC 29003. PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME of Hampton is in charge of arrangements.

NELSON, Kenyetta
Entered into eternal rest on October 28, 2002, Mr. Kenyetta Montreal Nelson, son of Mrs. Mary Ann Nelson Waterman and Mr. Kenneth Waterman, brother of Stephanie Nelson Frederick and Damien Waterman, father of K'Niyan and Kwaeshon Nelson. MCCORMIC, John
John "Jack" Alexander McCormic, 69, of Bamberg, SC and husband of Margaret Hilda Thompson McCormic, died Monday, October 28, 2002 in Charleston, SC. Mr. McCormic was born Thursday, June 22, 1933 in Sumter, SC, the son of the late Leslie F. and Pansy Craft McCormic. He graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1955 and served in the US Army. Mr. McCormic was a self-employed cabinet maker and home renovator. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, their Men's Club, the Apollo Music Club and the Paw Paw Country Club in Bamberg, SC, a former President of the Gaffney Jaycees. He was elected to the Henderson County Board of Education and the Corydon City Council in Corydon, KY and a Kentucky Colonel. He was an avid gardener, loved sports and golf, but nothing was more important than his loving family.
Mr. McCormic is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, 7 children: Leslie Hoskins and her husband Steve; John McCormic, Jr. and his wife Pamela; Thad McCormic and his wife Melinda; Brian McCormic; Ashley Wilkerson and her husband Roderick; Matthew McCormic and his wife Amy; all of Kentucky, and Dwight McCormic of Athens, GA. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, a brother, William McCormic and his wife Lillis of Clemson, SC and predeceased by a brother and a sister. A Memorial Service in his honor will be celebrated, Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at 7:00 PM in the Trinity United Methodist Church, Bamberg, SC. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2002 at 3:00 PM at the Corydon United Methodist Church, Corydon, KY. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made in his name, in lieu of flowers, to Trinity United Methodist Church, 11761 Heritage Hwy., Bamberg, SC 29003 or the Corydon United Methodist Church in Corydon, KY. JONES, Hubert
Hubert Talmadge Jones, 53, of North Charleston, died Monday, October 28, 2002 in a local hospital.
A funeral service will be held Friday, November 1, 2002, 11 AM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, burial to follow in Carolina Memorial Park.
Born August 11, 1949 in Florence, SC. He was the son of the late Leo James Jones and Uldene (Dee) Weatherford Short.
Mr. Jones was an electrician and a veteran of the Air Force. Mr. Jones was a loving husband, son, father, brother, and grandfather.
Mr. Jones had a love for nature and the outdoors and he also enjoyed water.
Survivors include: his wife, Tina Louise Carter Jones of North Charleston, his mother, Uldene "Dee" Short of Summerville, a daughter, Heather Alicia Jones Baker and her husband Anthony Gordon Baker of Summerville, a sister, Sandra Patricia Jones Mims and her husband Kenneth Lee Mims of North Charleston, and a granddaughter, Hannah Jones Baker of Summerville.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 30, 2002, from 6 - 8 PM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC.
Arrangements being handled by Carolina Memorial Funeral Home.

BARROWS, Gustine
Gustine Sellers Barrows, 79, a retired homemaker, died on Friday morning, October 25, 2002 in Boston, Massachusetts.
She leave to mourn, two daughters: Mattie J. White (Thomas-deceased) of North Charleston, SC and Joyce G. Jefferson (John) of Suitland, MD; two sons: Jerome Taylor (Joyce) of Awendaw, SC and James Barrows (Betsy) of Boston, MA; a sister, Grace M. Ford of St. Stephens, SC; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
The home going celebration will be held on Thursday, October 31, 2002 at 1:00 PM at North Area Funeral Home Chapel, 4784 Gaynor Avenue, North Charleston, SC. Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 5616 Pryor Street, North Charleston, SC from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Wednesday evening.
