BURN, Gerald
Gerald Edward Burn, 73, of Charleston, a retired Electrical Planner and husband of Sally Harrelson Burn died Saturday, October 26, 2002. Mr. Burn was born December 3, 1928, in Ensley, Ala., a son of Lockwood James and Louise Clair Burn. He attended Mitchell Elementary, Rivers Middle and graduated from Murray Vocational High School. Mr. Burn became employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and soon after entered the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War. After honorably serving his country, he returned home to his wife and his job at the Naval Shipyard. Mr. Burn retired after 36 years of dedicated service and became a consultant for Envisions, an engineering firm. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church's Perpetual Adoration, the Elks Lodge #242, and former member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Burn was an avid gardener, Washington Redskins fan and was known as the neighborhood handyman that "could fix anything and everything, " but above all else put his family first. He is survived by his wife, Sally, of 50 years and one daughter, Cynthia B. Kroll of Charleston; four sons, Gerald E. "Jerry" Burn, Jr., of Charleston, Stephen G. Burn of Barnwell, Philip B. Burn of Charleston, Gregory J. Burn of Yorktown, Va.; three brothers, Rev. William C. Burn, Francis M. Burn and Robert J. Burn; seven grandchildren, Tara Gay, Michael Burn, Melanie Browning, Joey Kroll, Heather Kroll, Stephen Burn and Hayley Burn and seven great-grandchildren, Franko Gay, Julianna Gay, Capers Gay, Michael Burn, Andrew Burn, Payton Nesbitt and Austin Nesbitt. Mr. Burn was predeceased by a son, John A. Burn and a brother, Lockwood J. Burn, Jr. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald E. CORONTZES, Arthur
Arthur Nicholas Corontzes, 78, a retired librarian at the Citadel and widower of Helen Carabatos Corontzes, died Saturday, October 26, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Corontzes was born in Charleston, S.C., on November 17, 1923, a son of Nick and Mary Trapalis Corontzes. He graduated from the High School of Charleston, received a double major in English and French from the University of South Carolina and earned a Masters Degree from Emory University in Library Science. Mr. Corontzes was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, loved books, music, the arts and a good meal. He is survived by a daughter, Maria Corontzes Alfieris of Charleston; two sons, Dino A. Corontzes of Columbia and Niko A. Corontzes of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Katina C. Manos of Charleston and six grandchildren, John and Eleni Alfieris of Charleston; John and Eleni Alfieris of Charleston, Arthur and Beach Corontzes of Columbia and Christopher and Elizabeth Corontzes of Mt. Pleasant.

LIPSITZ, Hyman
Dr. Hyman D. Lipsitz, 89, of Beaufort, South Carolina, died Saturday, October 26, 2002, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be Monday, October 28, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Beth Israel cemetery, Beaufort.
Dr. Lipsitz was born in Beaufort on July 1, 1913 to the late Bertha Rubin Lipsitz and Max Saul Lipsitz. He grew up in Beaufort, attended the University of South Carolina, and graduated with a DDS from the Atlanta-Southern Dental College (precursor to the Emory University Dental School) in 1936. He practiced dentistry in Bishopville, SC, from 1936-1940 before returning to Beaufort. He served four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a Major with the 15th Fighter Group of the 7th Air Force. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, including the battles of Iwo Jima, Canton Island, and Macon Island, and was awarded two bronze stars.
After the war, he resumed his dental practice in Beaufort, retiring in 1981. He served on the board of directors of First Federal Savings & Loan of Beaufort and Palmetto Federal Savings Bank.
Dr. Lipsitz was an active member of the Beth Israel Synagogue, serving as President for 13 years. He was a Life Member of each of the Rotary Club of Beaufort, the University of South Carolina Alumni Association, and the order of Free Masons Harmony Lodge #22. He also was an active member of the National Sojourners, and the Alpha Omega Dental Society.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Helene J. Lipsitz, and his sister, Ethel L. Rabinowitz.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Bruce Lipsitz and Jodi Lewis of Atlanta, GA, son Stuart Lipsitz of Charleston SC, son and daughter-in-law Alan and Maria Lipsitz of Columbia SC; brother, Joseph W. Lipsitz of Beaufort SC; his two grandsons, Zachary and Joshua Lipsitz; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Congregation Beth Israel, P.O. Box 328, Beaufort, SC 29901.

LADSON - Evangeline Barfield Mathis, 87, died Saturday at her home at 1027 Summit Drive in Ladson.
She was a retired school teacher, a former member of First United Methodist Church in Conway, and a current member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. A native of Duplin County, NC, daughter of the late John Burke and Abigail Jones Barfield, and widow of Sam Steele Mathis.
Survived by sons, Sam (Bill) Mathis of the home, and Mike Mathis and wife Clairette of Conway; four grandchildren, Stephanie Mathis, Michael Mathis, Rachel Jones, and Sarah Turnbull; three great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Sharon M. Johnson of Mount Pleasant, SC and Nancy M. Lauseng of Isle of Palms, SC; one son, Carl B. McCants, Jr., of Isle of Palms, SC, one sister, Mildred Babcock of Bridgeport, Conn., four grandchildren, Harley Johnson, Carl B.
