Samatha Edna Gunning Hall, 87, formerly of Union, widow of Boyd Lee Hall, died Nov. 25, 2002, at 10:10 p.m. in the National Health Care Center in Laurens. Mrs. Hall was born in Swain County, N.C. on April 12, 1915, a daughter of the late Joseph Michael Gunning and Annie Cathey Gunning. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a granddaughter and her husband, Leslie and Mike Lanier of Buffalo; a great-grandson, Michael Watkins of Greenville; and a special niece, Kayla Kirby of Union.
Mrs. Hall was predeceased by a daughter, Geraldine Watkins; a granddaughter, Lisa Farmer; three sisters, Agnes Hooper, Ann Henderson and Virginia Dorman; and two brothers, Joseph Gunning and Arville Gunning.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerry McKee. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until 2 p.m. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Clarence W. Morris
Clarence W. Morris, 85, former resident of Union, died Nov. 24, 2002, at 8:15 p.m. in National Health Care in Laurens after an extended illness. Mr. Morris was born in Union on July 30, 1917, a son of the late James Thomas Morris and Thaddie Horne Morris. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Morris was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired salesman for Pangburn Candy Company.
Surviving are three sisters, Elizabeth Morris Smith of Union, Ruth Morris McGowan of Kingston, N.Y.; and Annie Mae Morris Bradley of Rock Hill; two brothers, Virgil Morris of Union and Billy G. Morris of Clarksville, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bennie Green. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Bryan Robinson, Brett Robinson, Rusty Smith, Jimmy Morris, John Middlebrooks, Joe Smith and Tommy Smith. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 10-11 a.m.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al Smith, 207 Spruce St., Union. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, or to the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Highway., Union, or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
John E. Smith
John E. Smith, 77, of 245 Harwood Heights, widower of Sara Gault Smith, died at his home Nov. 25, 2002, at 1:05 p.m. Mr. Smith was born in Spartanburg County on Jan. 10, 1925, a son of the late Broadus and Cora Pruitt Smith. He was a Baptist, a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl S. and Jim Wilkins of Shelby, N.C. and Susan S. and Ricky Alman of Union; a son, Richard D. Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Rhonda Lawson, Amy Caldwell, Richie Smith, Chad Fincher and Michael Wilkins; great-grandchildren, Leslie Hines, Alaina Hines, Jessica Caldwell, Clarissa Caldwell, Leigh Wilkins and Lynn Wilkins; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial with military honors will be held at Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be J.R. Tankersley, Roy Frost, Jackie Trail, (Shug) McMillian, Craig McMillian and Buddy Alman.
The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. to sit in a group: Former supervisors of United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and Brent Gossett. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8:30.
The family is at the home, 245 Harwood Heights. Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Carolina, 432 B. N. Duncan By-Pass, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
William Dean West
WILMINGTON, N.C. - William Dean West, of Wilmington, N.C., died Nov. 24, 2002, at his home. Mr. West was born in Union on Nov. 13, 1926, a son of the late William Perrian West and Crystal Hyatt West. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Union. Mr. West was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a jeweler for 50 years, affiliated with The Jewel Box, Mills, and D. West Jewelers.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dolores Finberg West of the home; two daughters, April Dean West and Cherie Diane West of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Louis Perrian West of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Marie West Riley and her husband Gene Riley of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald Russell West and his wife Sandra of West Springs; a grandson, Michael Seth Hewlett of Wilmington, N.C.; and one great-grandchild, Dustin Taylor Kavanaugh of Wilmington, N.C. Mr. West was predeceased by two sisters, Cornelia West Senn and Betty Jo West Kunze.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Coble-Ward-Smith Funeral Home-Oleander Chapel. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of Mr. West. Lucille S. Calhoun
Lucille Mable Sherfield Calhoun, 83, of 200 Hillcrest Drive, Union, widow of Gail F. Calhoun, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at 3:10 a.m. in White Oak Estates in Spartanburg. Mrs. Calhoun was born in Buffalo on Dec. 12, 1919, a daughter of the late Will and Helen Nance Sherfield. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda C. and John M. Jenkins of Union and Shirley C. and Jesse Messer of Asheville, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Wanda Calhoun of Union; three sisters, Louise Fincher and Peggy Bogan, both of Buffalo and Violet Lawson of Lenoir, N.C.; a brother, Paul Sherfield of Buffalo; five grandsons, Chuck and Tim Messer, Chad and Charlie Jenkins and Chip Calhoun; three great-granddaughters, Bailee Calhoun, Malia Messer and Maile Messer.
Mrs. Calhoun was predeceased by three brothers, Bud Sherfield, Bob Sherfield and Bill Sherfield. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will be active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 6 until 8. The family is at the home, 200 Hillcrest Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Donald F. Keller
WHITMIRE - Donald F. Keller, 89, widower of Minnie G. Keller, of 174 Alexander Road, Whitmire, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2003, at 11:08 p.m. at his home. Mr. Keller, a native of Union County, was born March 25, 1914, a son of the late Annie Lee Bumgarner. Mr. Keller was employed at Young Chevrolet as a mechanic.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Keller of Whitmire; three sisters, Louise Eaves, Lucy Eaves and Betty Simms, all of Union; two brothers, Gene Bumgarner and wife, Vick, of Whitmire and Carl Bumgarner and wife, Sharon, of Clinton; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sons, Wes Keller and two infant sons. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Lee Cemetery in Whitmire conducted by the Rev. Steven Young. The body will remain at the Lewis Funeral Home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Brock, Tommy Brock, Roger Davis, Mandale Eaves, Mickey Eaves and Chris Keller.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Ammons, and E.B. Wallen. Active and honorary pallbearers are asked to be at the graveside Thursday at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 352, Newberry, S.C. 29108-0352. The family is at the home of his son, Bill Keller, 6318 Whitmire Highway in Whitmire. Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gladys Lawter Rivers
WEST COLUMBIA - Services for Gladys Elizabeth Lawter DeHart Rivers, 86, of West Columbia, will be held at noon Thursday at Northside Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Steven M. Cloud. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery in Union officiated by the Rev. Gideon Long. Visitation will be from 11 until noon at the church prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church. Mrs. Rivers, widow of Grover DeHart and S. W. Rivers, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003. Born in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Reuben Nathaniel and Ila Dona Blanton Lawter.
Mrs. Rivers was a member of Northside Baptist Church where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, a member of the XYZ and Silver Saints Singers, and a charter volunteer for Lexington County Hospital for over 25 years. Surviving are her daughters, Gloria Daus (Bill Curts) of Bradenton, Fla., Glenda Lawson (Wayne); step-daughter, Gail Murphy (Allen) of Lexington; step-son, Rick Rivers (Jean) of Lexington; sister, Margie Griffin of Spartanburg; grandchildren, David Lawson (Donna) of Union, Troy Lawson (Jennifer) of Jonesville, Jo Ann Daus Weld (Carlos) of Tallahassee, Fla.; five great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Rivers was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is handling arrangements.
Russell Thomas
LOCKHART - Russell Thomas, 69, of 163 Thomas Ranch Road, Lockhart, husband of Coralee Thompson Thomas, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born in Union County on March 9, 1034, a son of the late Leo and Ila Thompson Thomas. He was a retired lineman of Lockhart Power Co. and a member of Lockhart Chapel Baptist Church. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Brenda Jeter and Rosalyn (Woodie) Thomas, both of Union; a sister, Grace (Frank) Wilson of Lockhart; two brothers, Frank (Wilma) Goode of Union, John D. Worthy of Wilkesburg; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Lockhart Chapel Baptist Church in Lockhart with the Rev. George Sims officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home of his daughter, Brenda Jeter and Harold Pendergraph, 219 May St., Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.
John W. Gregory
John Wilson Gregory, 67, husband of Joanne Hartley Gregory, of 408 West Hillcrest Ave., died Nov. 27, 2002, at 2:12 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mr. Gregory was born in Union on Nov. 29, 1934, a son of the late Grover Cleveland Gregory and Lollie Jolley Gregory.
He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Mr. Gregory was a 1952 graduate of Union High School, a 1956 graduate of Bob Jones University and received his graduate degree from the University of Denver in Denver, Colo. and was retired from the Aarundel County Maryland Public Schools as a Teacher and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and MSTA.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, John Richard Gregory of Union; two sisters, Anita G. Sanders and Mary Jo Gregory both of Union; a brother, Claude Gregory of Ninety Six and a number of nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church by Father Raymond Carlo.
A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Visitation will follow the Rosary at the church. The family is at the home, 408 West Hillcrest Ave., Union. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 110 D, Hospital Dr., Simpsonville, SC 29681. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
