FLOYD, Alice
Services for Alice G. Floyd, 80, will be held at 3 p.m., Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Conway, SC, conducted by Rev. Dr. Robby McBride of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, Lexington, SC. Mrs. Floyd, widow of George W. Floyd, died at her daughter’s home at Lake Murray on October 22 after an illness. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, June 20, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John Albert Glominski and the late Faye Harvey Glominski. She was graduated from Spartanburg High School and the University of South Carolina with majors in French and English and with minors in Physical Education and Spanish. She later earned a masters degree in History Education. During a 28-year career as a teacher at Conway High School, Mrs. Floyd taught multiple subjects, but will primarily be remembered for her contributions in teaching French through her exuberance for the subject, love of her students, and her summer trips to France with many of her students. She also boarded many students from France in her home, many foreign naval officers through the Conway Chamber of Commerce, and enjoyed lifelong relationships with many international friends.
Mrs. Floyd was an active sports enthusiast which was evident during her years at Camp Pinnacle in Hendersonville, N.C. where she was voted Best All Around Camper and later served as a counselor. She also acted as the Water Sports Director at state parks in York and Cheraw. While at U.S.C., she was the only woman on the men’s swim team when there was a shortage of men due to World War II. After her marriage took her to Conway, the American Red Cross asked her to teach swimming lessons and cleared Smith Lake to provide a teaching location. Mrs. Floyd was the first certified Red Cross Water Safety and Lifesaving Instructor for Horry County and was inducted this year into the American Red Cross Lifesaving Honor Society. Mrs. Floyd was also an avid gardener and was a member of the Conway Garden Club, where she served in a number of capacities including President. She and her husband were founders and charter members of the Riverside Club of Conway.
After her retirement, Mrs. Floyd remained active with a number of avocations. She was a member of tennis teams in Conway and Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach for many years, playing her last match in the state tournament of 2001. She continued her lifelong hobbies of bridge, waterskiing, crabbing, clamming, and shrimping. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking the fruits of her catches from the Garden City creek. She became a passionate traveler, including a 2-week bicycle trip with her children along the Rhine River in Germany to celebrate her 72ndbirthday.
Mrs. Floyd treasured her family, her students and her many, many friends. Her energy, attitude, wit, and constant smile brought the world to life for those fortunate enough to have known her.
Surviving are children, John Wilson Floyd and his wife, Toni Holman, of Greensboro, Ga., Ellen F. Faris and her husband, Andy, of Lake Murray, S.C., Shirley F. Norton and her husband, Jack, of Lexington, S.C., and Sally F. Fife and her husband Lee, of Fort Mill, S.C.; brother, John Harvey and his wife Eleanor; grandchildren, Anna Burns Harris of Columbia, Steven James Norton of Lexington, Samantha Marie Fife and Nicholas Lee Fife of Ft. Mill. Her husband of 50 years, George, as well as a brother, Jim Harvey, predeceased her.

Mary Louise (Chick) Sheedy Tracy, 78, wife of Edward Magee Tracy, MD, of Seabrook Island died Tuesday, October 22ndat her residence. Born in Hackensack, NJ to the late Michael Morgan and Mellda Louise Zimmerman Sheedy. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Mrs. Tracy is survived by her husband of 59 years, seven children, Ann Tracy Abess of Charleston, SC, Sheila Tracy Buonerba of Buffalo, NY, Edward M. Tracy, Jr., of Charleston, SC, Mark M. Tracy of Charleston, SC, Jeffery M. Tracy of Atlanta, GA, Arthur T.M. Tracy of Rensselaer, NY, and Coltilde M. Tracy Shapiro of Seattle, WA, and, four siblings, Paul Sheedy of Tallahassee, FL, Daniel Sheedy of Buffalo, NY, Joseph H. Sheedy, MD of Buffalo, NY, and Imelda Sheedy Clauss of Clearwater, FL. WALTERBORO - Ms. Ruby Ruth Crosby Groves, 82, of 316 Hickory Street, died Monday evening, October 21, 2002, at her residence.

Ms. Groves was born September 19, 1920, in Colleton County and was a daughter of the late James Willie and Banner Robertson Crosby. She devoted her life to her home and family. She was the widow of Edward R. "Ed" Groves and attended the Walterboro Church of God.
Surviving are, her sons, Gene Groves, Dan Groves, Harold Groves, Richard Groves, Ralph Groves, Sammy Groves, Harry Groves, and Howard Groves, all of Walterboro, and Ander Groves of Islandton; her daughters, Annie Ruth Eason of Chickamauga, Ga., and Mary Ann Marinaro of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Eleanor Varnadoe of Ruffin; 32 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

MCGREW, Donald
MYRTLE BEACH - Donald Curts McGrew, 85, of East Sweetbriar Trail died Sunday, October 20, 2002, at Conway Hospital following an illness.
Born December 31, 1916, in New Castle, Pa., he was the son of the late William and Miriam Curts McGrew. He was a veteran of WWII having served as an Army Air Force navigator in the South Pacific Theater. Mr. McGrew received his BS in Education from Indiana University of PA, a Masters in Education from the University of Pittsburgh, and also did graduate study at Duke University. He retired from a Vice Presidency in the Macmillan Publishing Company where he had been employed for 35 years in the School Textbook Division. He moved to Myrtle Beach from Cinnaminson, N.J., in 1987. Mr. McGrew was an adjunct instructor at Horry-Georgetown Technical College from 1989 to 2002. He was a member of the Socastee United Methodist Church; Mahoning Lodge #43, F&AM, New Castle, PA; the Valley of New Castle, PA; Scottish Rite Masons, long time member of Riverton Country Club, NJ; Quail Creek Men's golf, and VFW Post #10420. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Coastal Samaritan Center. He had been the SUMC Mobile Meals coordinator. He volunteered each year for the DuPont World Amateur Golf Tournament, as well as the Senior PGA and LPGA when in the Myrtle Beach area.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Elwell McGrew; two sons, Robert B. McGrew of Bladensburg, MD, and D. Mark McGrew of Summerville, SC, two step-children, Steven J. Reynolds of Egg Harbor TWP, NJ and Sandi Reynolds Zirneklis of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren, Meredyth, Lauren and Mark of Summerville, and three step-grandchildren, Kassidy and Steven of Egg Harbor TWP, and Mazie Zirneklis of Charleston, SC; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank W. McGrew and Robert L. McGrew, and a sister Jane McGrew Kemp.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Friday, at Socastee United Methodist Church. GRAND STRAND FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY will be in charge of arrangements.

Jerry N. Drake, 73, passed away October 15, 2002, at his home in Miami, Fla., after a courageous fight with cancer. He was born in Charleston and lived in Miami since 1964. Mr. Jefferies was born in Atlanta, GA, son of the late John William and Mary Ruth Stocker Jefferies. He graduated from Georgia Tech as a mechanical engineer, retired as a commander from the United States Navy and instructed engineering at Trident Technical College. He was an avid sailor and traveler and a member of the Hobcaw Yacht Club.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Ann J. Dorton of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Lynda J. Miller of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Sarah James Jamie Jefferies of Columbia, SC; one son, William Lawrence Larry Jefferies of Nashville, TN; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by Dorothy C. Jefferies, his wife of fifty two years.
