NEWMAN, Marjorie
Marjorie Grace Newman, widow of Lt. Col F. P. Newman, Jr., (Ret.) passed into eternal rest in Mount Pleasant, S.C., at the age of 80.
Mrs. Newman was born in rural Iowa, very much a child of the Great Depression. Following graduation from high school, she answered a call to serve her country by moving to Washington, D.C., to work as a civilian secretary in the Department of the Army. She met and married
an equally young soldier from North Carolina.
For the next 30 years, she met the heavy demands placed on the wife of a professional Army Officer: raising children, often alone and on a small allotment, learning foreign languages, sometimes living in a converted troop barracks, hospital ward or warehouse. At the same time she succeeded at the additional exacting protocol for the military wife, mothering junior officers and non-coms assigned to her husband's command, leading Girl Scout troops and Cub Scout dens, coaching Little League baseball teams, moving from one post to another, often every year, writing letters every day to a husband in three wars and always being the first woman asked to model in the local fashion shows.
After retirement from the Army, the Newmans moved back to Columbia where Mrs. Newman worked as secretary to the principal of Spring Valley High School for ten years. Following a second retirement were several years living, golfing, and gardening in Cameron before Col. Newman's health mandated a return to Columbia during which she devotedly nursed him until his death in 1998. Since then, she has lived with her son Roger's family in Mt. Pleasant, suffering gradually declining health. She died at home with her family in attendance of December 9, 2002.
Marjorie Newman is survived by one brother, Elvin H. Beemer, and his wife Margaret of Bedford, Iowa; also by three sons, Forest P. Newman III, MD, and his wife Yung; Roger B. Newman, MD, and his wife Diane; Mark G. Newman, MD, and his wife, Colleen; and one daughter, Susan Newman Appenzeller, MSW. She will be lovingly remembered by her ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and by many dear friends and neighbors.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Cameron Memorial cemetery, Cameron, S.C. Arrangements by MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, EAST COOPER CHAPEL, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. 29464, Phone 843-884-3833.
