George E. Moser, 84, husband of Dorothy Cangi Julian Moser of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., died Tuesday, December 3, 2002, in a local hospital. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Mr. Moser was born September 9, 1918, in Obernburg, N.Y., son of Joseph and Amanda Muth Moser. He worked for Rupp Southern Tier as a truck driver for 20 years, and was owner and operator of 211 Liquor Store in Middletown, N.Y., until 1993. Mr. Moser was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II where he received a Purple Heart medal and was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Cangi Moser of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Elizabeth Moser Botti of Hummelstown, Pa.; two sisters, Frances Loughrey of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Josephine Meyer of Mileses, N.Y.; three step-children, Shelley Nelson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Walter Krecidlo of Goshen, N.Y., and Mary Joyce Hilaire of Middletown, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, George E. Moser, Jr., and one daughter, Kathryn M. Robinson.

Mercedes Dorothy Witt Heyer, 81, of Savannah, Georgia died Saturday, December 7that her son's residence on James Island. Ms. Heyer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Edward and Johanna Dooley Witt. Surviving Ms. Heyer is her son, Scott I. Heyer of Charleston, a daughter, Mary Beth Heyer of Atlanta, GA, a sister, Marguerite Bliesener of San Diego, CA., nephews, and numerous friends. After many years, Ms. Heyer retired from Neiman Marcus as a sales associate in the San Diego and Newport Beach, CA. stores. Subsequent to her retirement Ms. Heyer served as a docent for the Historic Savannah Foundation. She was an active Catholic. All services will be private. Ms. Sumter was born in Colleton County and was the widow of the late Robert Sumter. She attended the public schools in Colleton County. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Mr. Holcombe, 82, was born on January 16, 1920 in Central, South Carolina, a son of the late Raymond Edward and Sallie Sullivan Holcombe. Mr. Holcombe graduated from Central High School and from the American School in Fundamental Engineering in Youngstown, Ohio. He retired after 20 years service from Swift Ice Cream Company and then worked for Foremost Ice Cream Company for four years. Mr. Holcombe was the founder of S. A. Holcombe Refrigeration Company in 1968 and the owner of Holcombe Mobile Home Park in North Charleston. He was a 50 year member of the former Charleston Heights Baptist Church, and a Charter Member (1947) of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES), a member of the BPO Elks Lodge # 242, and a former member of the Advisory Board of Trident Technical College (Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Division) and was nominated to Who’s Who of South Carolina in 1974.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years; two daughters and son-in-law, Barbara H. Saxby (Ski) of Jonesboro, GA; Brenda G. Holcombe of Goose Creek, SC; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin E. Holcombe (Laura) of Roanoke, VA, Billy F. Holcombe (Corrine) of Virginia Beach, VA and Milton W. Holcombe (Betty Jo) of Dallas, TX; Edward L. Butch and wife (Le Anne) Holcombe of Landry, SC, son of his deceased brother, Furman (Pete) Holcombe; four grandchildren, Shannon L. Saxby of Mobile, AL, Ryan S. Saxby, Patrick E. Saxby and Kevin Arthur Saxby all of Jonesboro, GA; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
COTTINGHAM, Samuel
GREELEYVILLE - Samuel Francis Cottingham, 68, husband of Beatrice Gamble Disher Cottingham, died Thursday, December 5, at his residence in Greeleyville.
Mr. Cottingham was born September 18, 1934, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Mary Lee Cole Cottingham Boyd and Mitchell Carodine Cottingham. He was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and attended Clemson University. He was the owner of Sam's Shoe Service in Kingstree for 40 years, having retired in 2000. He served on the Williamsburg County Council for 16 years, in the capacity of Maintenance Supervisor and Director of the Public Works Dept. He was a former member of the Williamsburg County Development Board, Williamsburg County Draft Board and Chairman of the Williamsburg County Council on Aging. He was a member of Kingstree Masonic Lodge #46, and a lifelong devoted member and lay leader of Trio United Methodist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of Greeleyville, his daughter, Frances C. McCrea (Darren) of Kingstree, grandsons, Joshua and Justin McCrea both of Kingstree, step-daughter, Mildred D. Grimsley of Florence, step-grandson, Jason Grimsley of Florence, adopted son, Cris McBride (Mae Belle) of Trio, four sisters, Juanita C. Gordon of Georgetown, Doris Lee C. McCants (Heyward) of North Charleston, Margaret B. Smith (Fritz) of Kingstree and Marilyn B. Summers (Tom) of Columbia; five brothers, Mitchell C. Cottingham (Virginia) of Manning, J.D. Cottingham (Betty) of Lynchburg, Wallace R. Cottingham (Carolyn) of Georgetown, Ralph E. Cottingham (Betty) of Lynchburg, Wallace R. Cottingham (Carolyn) of Georgetown, Ralph E. Mr. Sallman died Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Providence Hospital. Born in Chicago, May 12, 1922, he was a son of the late Garfield and Gladys Barnes Sallman. Mr. Sallman served in the army during WWII. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began a rewarding career with Midlands Technical College and helped establish the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. Mr. Sallman was department chair for 24 years. His commitment to students led him to organize the Mu Alpha Chapter of Tau Alpha Pi, the scholastic honor society for engineering technology students and the student chapter of the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. Upon retirement after 30 years of dedicated service, Mr. Sallman received Faculty Emeritus. He continued to be active in the college and in the community. He was 1989-90 Volunteer of the Year for Richland School District #1 for his participation at his now deceased grandson's school. He was also a volunteer for the Mended Hearts Club at Providence Hospital. He was truly passionate and dedicated and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margee Gibson Sallman; son, John B. Sallman, Jr., of Hendersonville, N.C.; daughter, Barbara Davis of Columbia; brother, Charles Sallman of Valparaiso, IN; sister, Margaret Howe of Deerfield, IL; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
