James R. Maness
Former Goodyear employee

James Richard (Ricky) Maness, 44, husband of Joy Shever Maness of 210 Harwood Heights, Union, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. Mr. Maness was born in Union, Sept. 28, 1959, a son of James L. and Mary Lawson Maness of Union.

He was a graduate of Union High School class of 1978 and was formerly employed with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Spartanburg. Mr. Maness was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are his maternal grandmother, Aileen V. Lawson of Union and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Mr. Jim Maness. The family will receive friends after the service.

The family is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Maness, 208 Harwood Heights, Union, S.C. 29379. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Gladys Lawter Rivers
Union County native

WEST COLUMBIA - Services for Gladys Lawter DeHart Rivers , 96, of West Columbia were held at noon today. Burial was to follow this afternoon in Rosemont Cemetery in Union. The Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia had charge of arrangements.

Patricia B. Willard
Retired from Wal-Mart

Patricia Brown Willard, 65, of 207 2nd St., Union, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at her home after an extended illness. Ms. Willard was born in Union, April 13, 1938, a daughter of the late Roy C. and Ruth Tweed Brown. Ms. Willard, (Pat), was a kind, generous, caring and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She was a retired associate with Wal-Mart, a graduate of Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jerry Lanier with whom she made her home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Donna Jolly, Nathan and CeCe Jolly, Jimmy and Linda Jolly, all of Union; six sisters, Margaret Coward, Thelma Brown and Mary Lee Parks, all of Union, Augustine and her husband, Donald Crocker of Greenwood, Peggy and Oliver Willard Sr. of Gaston and Brenda Brown of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Brandi and Dylan Lanier of the home; Ashton and Derek Jolly of Union, Dawn and Katie Jolly of Union and Blake Varner of Union; a great-granddaughter, Kaylee Inman of the home and a number of nieces and nephews.

Ms. Willard was predeceased by three brothers, Bobby, Keith and Kenny Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gary Farmer. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Steve Crocker, Bruce Crocker, Richard Crocker, Oliver Willard Jr., Paul Greer Jr., and Eddie Hines.

Employees of Wal-Mart are asked to sit in a group. Employees of Hospice Care of S.C., Union office, are also asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379 or to do something special for someone in need in memory of Pat.

The family is at the home, 207 2nd St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Andrew Gist

Andrew Gist, of 1140 Strother Rd., died Nov. 27, 2002, at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. The family is at the home, 1140 Strother Rd., Santuc Community. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Union Community Funeral Home.

Eunice Land
Homemaker

Eunice Land, 81, widow of Robert Land, died Nov. 26, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Jeter was the daughter of the late Thomas Jeter and Maggie Stevens Jeter. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethesda Baptist church.

Surviving are two sisters, Lillie Ruth of Union and Katherline Neal of Asheville, N.C. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial will be in James Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing will be today from 12-7 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Dawkins, 115 McLure St., Union. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Linda T. Tucker

Linda Tinsley Tucker, 62, of Santuc, died Nov. 27, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Whitney Funeral Home.

Andrew Gist
Retired from General Motors

Andrew Gist, 83, husband of Mary J. Gist, of 1140 Strother Road, Santuc Community, died Nov. 27, 2002, at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Mr. Gist was born in Union County on June 1, 1919, a son of the late Edith D. Hughes and William Gist. He was a member of McBeth Baptist Church, Deacon Board, Men's Choir, Mixed Choir, and an organizer of the Junior Deacon Board. Mr. Gist was a retired shift supervisor with General Motors in Detroit, Mich.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Ricardo Gist of Detroit, Mich.; Renardo Gist of Aurora, Ill.; Norman Johnson of Union and Lin Johnson of Spartanburg; five daughters, Grace Henderson, Wanda Williams and JoAnn Gist all of Detroit, Mich.; and Andrena Dancer of Pomora, Calif.; and Gail Coward of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Oscar Gist of Union; two sisters, Ella Lee Jones of Detroit, Mich. and Ruby Boatwright of Philadelphia, Pa.; 21 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at McBeth Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be today from 10:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. - noon. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be the Junior Deacon Board and the flower girls will be the Usher Board and friends. The family is at the home, 1140 Strother Road, Santuc Community. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Fletcher T. Cabaniss
Retired from Hoechst Celanese

SPARTANBURG - Fletcher Thomas Cabaniss, 79, husband of Louise Howell Cabaniss, of 275 Cedarwood Ave., Spartanburg, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. A native of Lockhart, he was a son of the late Alvin Lewis Cabaniss and the late Cynthia Quinton Cabaniss. Mr. Cabaniss was a member of Fairview Free Will Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Hoechst Celanese.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Thomas Cabaniss Jr. of Roebuck and Ted Lee Cabaniss of Spartanburg; a daughter, Debra Young of Boiling Springs; two brothers, Robert Cabaniss and Jimmy Cabaniss, both of Chester; a sister, Eva Burgess of Lockhart; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Lanford-Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Hackett. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Memorial Park.

The family is at the home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Fairview Free Will Baptist Church, 2052 Chesnee Highway, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303 Lanford-Dunbar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Katie A. Carver
Retired from Union Mill

Katie Adams Carver, 82, of 211 Pine St., Union, widow of Walker Reaves Carver, died Saturday, Nov, 29, 2003 at 6 a.m. in Anderson Area Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Carver was born in Adamsburg on March 28, 1921, a daughter of the late Clyde C. and Ruby Smith Adams. She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn C. and Frank Coleman of Anderson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Carver of Staunton, Va., and David and Terri Carver of Irmo; a brother, Francis M. (Buddy) Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Amy Simmons and Emily Chamblee, both of Anderson and Triston Carver of Irmo; four great-grandchildren, Brian and Jamie Simmons, Ellen and Jack Chamblee, all of Anderson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a. m. today at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Darryl Palmer, Brian Simmons, Jerry Nance, Clyde Jenkins, Mike Jenkins and Stanley Russell. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. and was placed in the church at 10 a.m. today to await the hour of service.

The family was at the home, 211 Pine St., Union. Memorials may be made to Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Gladys Hamby Clark
Homemaker

Gladys Hamby Clark, 55, of 413 Lakeview Heights died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was born in Laurens and was a daughter of the late Leon and Julia Tucker Hamby. Mrs. Clark was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three sons, David Paige of Union, Chris Clark of Union and Edward Clark of Union; a daughter, Melissa Millwood of Laurens; a brother, Troy L. Hamby of Laurens; five sisters, Irene H. Rogers of Mountville, Mable H. Pearson of Laurens, Jean H. Blackwell of Clinton, Martha H. Bolt of Laurens and Faye H. Hall of Union; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel in Clinton with burial in Rosemont Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Gray Funeral Home of Clinton has charge of arrangements.
