William Houser
Union native

ST. GEORGE - William Eugene Houser, 58, of St. George died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at his residence. Graveside services will be held at Union Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call at Parks Funeral Home, Summerville, Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 and on Wednesday from 7 until 9 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Houser was born July 28, 1945, in Union, a son of William A. Houser and Rachel Gallman Houser. He graduated from Union High School and Trident Technical College and was a retired disabled truck driver. He was Methodist.

Surviving are his mother, Rachel Gallman Houser of St. George; an uncle, L.D. Gallman and his wife, Nancy, of North Charleston; a great-aunt, Rita Greene of Lake Murray and a cousin, Elaine G. Sandra B. McDonald
Retired from Sonoco Products

Sandra Annette Bright McDonald, 60, of 108 Lovers Hill Road, Union, widow of Bobby Joe McDonald, died at her residence Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, after an extended illness. Mrs. McDonald was born in Gaffney on April 24, 1943, a daughter of the late Travis W. and Nellie Mae Wylie Bright. She was retired from Sonoco Products.

Surviving are four daughters, Teresa Parham of the home, Tracy Sinclair of Union, Ann Wilson of Monarch and Jodie Davis of Buffalo; a son, Darrell McDonald of the home; two sisters, Dot Frost and Frances Black, both of Union; a brother, Wayne Bright of Union; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. today at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Ali Zandi, Timmy Stewart, Steve Manus, Terry Austin, Albert Wilson and Tim Black. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. The family is at the home, 108 Lovers Hill Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie E. Phillips
Retired from Monarch Mill

Jessie Eller Phillips, 85, formerly of 289 Bobby Faucett Road, Jonesville, widow of Forrest Phillips, died, 2:15 a.m., Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Phillips was born in Old Fort, N.C., on June 6, 1918, a daughter of the late Joseph Hardy and Rilla Allison Eller. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mrs. Phillips was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn P. and Stanley Hodge of Jonesville; a son, Forrest Eugene Phillips of Union; three granddaughters, Gina P. and husband, Chad Gregory of Jonesville; Amanda H. and husband, Chris Youngblood of Easley and Jodie P. and husband, Mark Blackwell of Jonesville; three great-grandsons, Hunter and Hagan Blackwell and Bailey Gregory.

Mrs. Phillips was predeceased by a sister and a brother, Annie Mae Jordan and Garland Eller. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson and the Rev. Wayne Jones. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Arley Eller, Ronnie Fisher, George Reynolds, Arthur Jordan, Joe Edward (Buddy) Newton and Elzie Newton.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Stanley Hodge, 281 Bobby Faucett Road, Jonesville. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 110 S. Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to the Buffalo Baptist Church, P.O. Box 428, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Shirley R. (Cheryl) Smith
Home health care worker

WHITMIRE - Shirley R. (Cheryl) Smith, 46, formerly of Wright City, Mo., and presently of 1547 S.C. Highway 66, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at the home of her best friends, Sue and Jimmy Hollingsworth. She was born in Bessemer City, N.C., and was a daughter of Olin D. Smith of Whitmire and the late Catherine Barnett Smith.

Cheryl was employed with Caring Hands Home Health Care Provider and was of the Baptist faith. While residing in Missouri, she was employed with Phillips 66. Surviving are father and step-mother, Olin D. Smith and Ruby K. Farrow of Whitmire; a son, Daniel Joesph D. Powell of Prosperity; a daughter and son-in-law, Nichole Kathleen Dunnam Wadsworth and Michael David Wadsworth of Union; grandchildren, Kaytlin Nikole Wadsworth, Makayla Elizabeth Wadsworth; a sister, Linda Sorrell of Bybee, Tenn.; a step-sister, Loretta Willard of Whitmire; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.

John L. Stevens
Cross Keys native

MOBILE, Ala. - John Luke Stevens, 78, a native of Cross Keys and a resident of Birmingham, Ala., passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at his home. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he retired from the Navy with the rank of commander, and was a chemist and executive for International Paper Company for over 30 years until his retirement in 1989.

He married Lucille Cochran in 1947 and they remained married until her death in 1991. He moved to Birmingham in 1993 where he was a member and Deacon of the Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and was secretary of the Homewood Kiwanis Club. He was active in the community and enjoyed following the sports activities of his grandchildren and traveling. Mr. Stevens was the youngest son of Thomas and Phalatiel Stevens.

His three brothers, Thomas, Clyde and Jerome and his sister, Katherine, all preceded him in death. Surviving are a daughter, Jan (Mike) Hinson, two sons, John Stevens Jr., of Boston, Mass., and Darryl (Deb) Stevens of Irvine, Calif.; four grandchildren, Erin Hinson of Auburn, Ala., Alex Hinson of Homewood, Ala. and Desmond and Tiller-John Stevens, both of Irvine, Calif.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m. from Serenity Funeral Home. Services will follow in the chapel after the visitation. Interment will be held in Serenity Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to New Beacon Hospice, 2145 Highland Avenue South, Ste. 110, Birmingham, Ala. 35205. A memorial service will be held Friday at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. at 11 a.m. Arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home, 8691 Old Pascagoula Road, Mobile, Ala.

Bobby Gene Moss
Retired from Texaco, Inc.

JONESVILLE - Bobby Gene Moss, 72, of 271 T. Bishop Road, Jonesville, died at his residence Dec. 1, 2002 at 12:30 p.m. Mr. Moss was born in Jonesville on June 7, 1930, a son of the late Arthur and Belle Crocker Moss. He was a life-long member of Jonesville Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from Texaco, Inc.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Lipsey Moss of the home; three daughters, Ms. Kaye Chumley, Mrs. Stephen (Rebecca) Beheler and Mrs. Frank (Barbara) Baldwin, all of Jonesville; a sister, Mrs. Francis Hicklin of Orangeburg; two brothers, A.B. Moss and Larry Moss, both of Jonesville; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Moss was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Jean Moss. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Calvin Smith. Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Heath Burgess, D.J. Long, Darryl Mabry, Bill Roberts, Lance Whitfield and Adam Wright.

The body will be at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 p.m. and will be placed in church at 10 a.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 271 T. Bishop Road, Jonesville. Memorials may be made to the Christian Life Center at Jonesville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 279, Jonesville, S.C. 29353 or to Hospice Care, 462 N. Duncan By-Pass, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Margaret M. Risher
Union native

SPARTANBURG - Margaret McNeill Risher, 84, of 1010 Arden Way, Spartanburg, died Nov. 29, 2002, at her home after a brief illness. Mrs. Risher was a native of Union, the daughter of the late Thomas Mattison and Emily Merritt McNeill. She was a 1939 graduate of Columbia College, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for almost 40 years.

She was a charter member of the Mary Black Hospital Auxiliary and had been a hospital volunteer since 1966. Mrs. Risher was a member of the Spartanburg Garden Club, and was an avid bridge player, belonging to two duplicate bridge clubs.

Surviving include her husband of 61 years, Harold Boyd Risher; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Harold Risher Sr. and Dianne Horton Risher of Hilton Head Island; a grandson, Thomas Harold Risher Jr. and his wife Jennifer Brooks Risher of Chicago, Ill.; a granddaughter, Ashley Risher Hahn and her husband Michael J. Hahn of Bluffton; two nephews reared in the home, Thomas Ansel McNeil and his wife Mary Elizabeth McNeill of Boiling Springs and George Terrance McNeill and his wife Mary Katherine McNeill of Monroe, Ga.; nieces, Nancy McDonald Hardee and Margaret McDonald Elliott and her husband Paul Glenn Elliott Sr.; ten nephews; three nieces; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by siblings, Thomas Ansel McNeill, Andrew Merritt McNeill, Adelaide McNeill McDonald and Helen Elaine McNeill. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Paul W. Harmon. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Paul J. Cote, Paul Glenn Elliott Jr., Jacob M. Elliott, Michael J. Hahn, Donald Kent Jenkins, Thomas Kevin Jenkins, and Robert P. Richardson Jr. Honoary pallbearers were Joseph J. Blake, Walter T. Cox, James G. Crowley Jr., Wylie L. Hamrick, J. Alex McArthur, Jack H. Oliver, Phillip H. Prince, and W. Leonard Still.

The family will receive friends and family following the service at the home, 1010 Arden Way, Spartanburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304, to the Trinity United Methodist Church Foundation, 626 Norwood St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302, or to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Boulevard, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301.

Linda T. Tucker
Ohio native

Linda Tinsley Tucker, 62, wife of Sylvester Tucker, of 109 Henry Lane, Santuc, died Nov. 27, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Tucker was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, on Nov. 18, 1940, a daughter of the late Ollie Tinsley and Forest E. Tinsley (Hanson) Howell. She was a member of Outreach Deliverance Center in Carlisle and was a graduate of Yorksville High School in Ohio.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Kevin (Vanessa) Tucker of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Sylvia Tucker Shuler (Michael) of Paoli, Pa.; and Karen Tucker of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Tolita (Calvin) Bailey and Dawn M. Howell all of Los Angeles, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Petra Aubrey and Kevon Tucker of Columbus, Ohio; Michael and Donovan Shuler of Paoli, Pa.

Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Outreach Deliverance Center in Carlisle by Pastor Eddie McConnell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon today. The family will be at the home. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
