DAVIS, Cleveland
Cleveland William Davis, widower of Thelma Coble Davis, passed away on November 26, 2002, early in the morning. His funeral was held Friday, November 29, 2002, arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, where many of his relatives and friends paid their last respects.
This is my tribute to a great man, my Grandfather:
Bill and Thelma are together again.
He loved Thelma, children, and life. He worked hard and with the help of his wife of 54 years, Thelma, they saved and created a very secure life for themselves. He lost Thelma in 1995, and life was a struggle for him without her.
He was a fine crane operator who traveled up and down the East Coast from New York to Florida, from project to project, in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, and 60's settling in Charleston in the early 1960's to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a crane operator. He retired in 1972 to a life of leisure.
Bill Davis loved to be the center of attention. After a few minutes in a room full of strangers, whether at a restaurant, doctor's office, or barbershop, everyone would be watching, listening, and laughing with him. He could, and would, talk forever about his life and his exploits. He never failed to entertain.
He kept those abilities until the end and surely took them with him on his journey to heaven.
He was my Grandfather and he was the best Grandfather, period. He taught me how to tie my shoes, how to hunt and fish, he taught me how to drive a car, operate a crane, and he taught me how to save money. Everyone should have a Grandpa like Bill Davis.
By the time his great-grandchildren arrived, Bill couldn't get around like he used to but they still knew his love. Because Bill Davis truly loved children, he was also a wonderful and "favorite uncle" to his nieces and nephews.
He will be sadly missed, greatly remembered, and always loved.
Grandson, Jeff Davis
