Hazel Pauline Poovey Sipe

CHERAW - Hazel Pauline Poovey Sipe, 90, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, at First United Methodist Church.

Born August 19, 1918, in Hickory, N.C., Mrs. Sipe was a daughter of the late Garland F. Poovey and Pearl Hatley Poovey and was the widow of Reginald Richard Sipe Sr. She was a caring and loving person who always put the interests of her family above her own. Mrs. Sipe lived most of her life in Cheraw and was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church.

She leaves to cherish a life of special memories two sons, Richard (Nan) Sipe of Greensboro, N.C., and Nick (Lee) Sipe of Columbia; six grandchildren, James, Roger, Damon, Amber, Shannon and Graham; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Frederick.

Memorials may be made to The Old St. David’s Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 1196, Cheraw, S.C. 29520-1196; or Ascension Hospice, P.O. Box 1367, Irmo, S.C. 29063.

Arrangements were entrusted to Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw.

Elsie Webb

WALLACE - Elsie Lunceford Webb, 74, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham, N.C.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Born December 13, 1934, in Richmond County, Mrs. Well was a daughter of the late Will and Hattie Lee Lunceford and was the widow of Leroy Webb. She was a homemaker, having chosen to stay at home with her grandchildren. Mrs. Webb had previously worked with Georgia Pacific and Gilead Manufacturing. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Webb (Daryl) Rummage of Wallace; two grandchildren, Rodney Rummage and Robbie Rummage, of Wallace; a great-grandson, Ryan Rummage; and three sisters, Colleen Chavis, Grace Chavis and Ruby Coward, all of Rockingham.

She was preceded in death by five siblings, Mary Gainey, Mattie Lunceford, Will Lunceford, Fairley Lunceford and John Lunceford.

Arrangements were entrusted to Carter Funeral Home.

Annie S. Sellers

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Annie S. Sellers, 103, died Thursday, January 8, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 15, at Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ. Burial followed in Beaverdale Memorial Park Cemetery.

Born Feb. 14, 1905, in Ruby, Mrs. Sellers was a daughter of the late Tom Sellers and Junor Sellers Nivens and was the widow of Owen B. Sellers. She was the mother of 13 children and was foster mother to numerous children in her community. Mrs. Sellers was a member of Faith Baptist Church, holding many positions in the church. She received many recognitions from the Connecticut State Missionary Baptist Convention, including the Women of Strength - Living Legend Honoree Award from the Connecticut State Missionary Baptist Convention Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs. Sellers was a member of the National Council of Senior Citizens, the National Association of Mature People and the National Tenants Organization. She was known for her work in the churches and communities of the greater New Haven area. Among her tributes were the prestigious Jefferson Award in 1989, the Sojourner Truth Award in 1997 from the African-American Women’s Agenda, the Ann Sellers Community Administration Building named in her honor and being featured on a box of Wheaties cereal.

Surviving are six daughters, Mary Lee Lowery, Orie McBride, Lucile (James) Reddings, Viola Nelson, Ann Lowery and Mary Sellers; three sons, George (Delia) Sellers, William Sellers and James (Phyllis) Bryant Sr.; two daughters-in-law, Martha Sellers and Dinah Sellers; 33 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; 87 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters; seven brothers; two sons, Spencer Sellers and Eddie Gean Sellers; two daughters, Leatha Mason and Rebia McGrant; six grandchildren, Henry Owens Reid, Michael Lowery, Debra McBride, James Bryant Jr., Laura Sellers and Willie Edward Sellers; and three great-grandchildren, Deon Chiles, Monique Johnson and Erika Sellers.

Thomas ‘Tommy’ Earl Hutson Sr.

CHERAW - Thomas “Tommy” Earl Hutson Sr., 77, died Saturday, January 24, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 26, at First Baptist Church, Cheraw. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Memorials to may be made to Cheraw Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 28, Cheraw, SC 29520; First Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 337, Cheraw, SC 29520; or American Cancer Society, c/o Kimberly Gulledge, 1158 Wade Funderburk Road, Pageland, SC 29728.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Hutson was a son of the late Thomas Glenard and Eula Mae Belle Hutson and was the widower of Margaret Williford Hutson. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Berean Sunday School Class. Mr. Hutson served the Cheraw Community for over 50 years in ambulance service, first with the funeral home and then as a charter member of the Cheraw Rescue Squad. He had been honored as the Rescue Man of the Year and had served as Captain. Mr. Hutson enjoyed car racing. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas “Tommy” (Susan) Earl Hutson Jr. of Wilmington, N.C., and William Michael “Mike” (Diane) Hutson of Cheraw; two daughters, Kathy Hutson (John) Treadaway of Cheraw and Glenda Hutson ( John ) Hornyak of Lakeville, Minn.; a sister, Miriam (Clyde) Bryant of Cheraw; a special friend, Loretta Roberts of Cheraw; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Glenard Hutson.

Arrangements were entrusted to Kiser Funeral Home.

Martha Marie Redfearn

CHESTERFIELD - Martha Marie Redfearn, 79, died Friday, January 23, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 28, at Grandview Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Chesterfield Community Cemetery.

Born February 24, 1929, in Chesterfield, Mrs. Redfearn was a daughter of the late Nathaniel and Lessie Mcguggan Redfearn. She was converted at an early and joined Grandview Presbyterian Church.

She leaves to cherish fond memories, a daughter, Mary Doris (Randy) Tarlton of Chesterfield; a son, Roger (Gloria) Redfearn of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, Elaine (Charles) Miller of Chesterfield, Joe (Nina) Redfearn of Chesterfield and Vonetta (Anthony) Williams of Chesterfield; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Arrangements were entrusted to Flemming Funeral Home-Chesterfield.

James Ross Johnson

CHERAW - James Ross Johnson, 71, died January 31, 2009, at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, at St David’s Episcopal Church. A private burial service will be held in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wallace.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, February 2, at Norton Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church School, Scholarship Fund, 420 Market Street, Cheraw, SC 29520; or Shriners Children’s Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Gurstell and Martha Hatcher Johnson and was the widow of Evelyn Ballance Johnson. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and was retired from Carolina Canners after many years of service. Mr. Johnson was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church and was for many years associated with Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw. Ross was active in Cheraw Masonic Lodge #15, was a member of the Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 158.

Surviving are two sons, Ira Wayne Johnson of Wallace and Michael Ross (Kathryn) Johnson of Cheraw; a sister, Frances J. Smith of Cheraw; and a grandson, Jack W. Johnson of Cheraw.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister.

Arrangements were entrusted to Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw.

Richard Curtis Turner Sr.

PAGELAND - Richard Turner Sr., 76, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, at Sutton Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to The Loyal Order of the Moose, 155 South International Drive, Mooseheart, IL 60539.

Born August 21, 1932, Mr. Turner was a son of the late Frank and Eileen Turner. He was a truck driver and member of The Loyal Order of the Moose.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Turner of Pageland; a son, Richard C. (Aidee) Turner Jr. of Riverside, Calif.; four daughters, Carolyn (Michael) Warren of Louisburg, N.C., Deborah Fernandez of Ontario, Calif., Sherry (Charles) Gillette of Covina, Calif., and Pamela Reed of Fontana, Calif.; two brothers, Frank Turner of Pageland and Charles Turner of Tampa, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were entrusted to Sutton Funeral Home.
