Bobby Lowery

CHERAW - Bobby Lowery, 67, died Thursday, January 29, 2009.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 2, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born in Wadesboro, N.C., Mr. Lowery was a son of Mary Alice Tarlton Lowery and the late Lennox Eugene Lowery. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School, and a retired truck driver with Swift Transportation. Mr. Lowery was a former member of the Cheraw Rescue Squad and was a member of North Cheraw Baptist Church. He was an avid NASCAR and wrestling fan.

Surviving are his wife, Connie Moody Lowery of the home; a son, Lane (Jennifer) Lowery of Chesterfield; a daughter, Mary Nancy (Lee) Gibbs of Florence; his mother of Cheraw; a stepson, Troy (Beth) Powers of Sellers; six grandchildren, Maysun, Lindsay, and Justin Gibbs, Jenna Lowery, Hunter and Kaitlyn Powers; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Lowery; and two nieces, Cheri Lowery and Billy Jo (Roger) Moore.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Gene Lowery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

James P. ‘Buddy’ Shaw

RUBY - James P. “Buddy” Shaw, 72, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at his home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Mt. Croghan Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Born August 3, 1936, in Chesterfield, Mr. Shaw was a son of the late Roy and Mary Luella Tucker Shaw. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School. Mr. Shaw was a former employee of Carolina Power & Light, Lynches River Electric Cooperative, INA USA and was a retired employee of Gerrard Tire Company. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a charter member of the Ruby-Mt. Croghan Fire Department, a member of Ruby Masonic Lodge # 314 and a member of Mt. Croghan Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Roberta Hancock Shaw of the home; a son, Robert (Bonnie) Shaw of Ruby; a daughter, Beth (Stuart) Stepp of Ruby; four grandchildren, Melissa (Finley) Teal of Ruby, Evan Stepp of Charlotte, N.C., Tracy (Chris) Burr and Sam Lisenby of Chesterfield; two great-grandchildren, Dillon and Brayden Burr of Chesterfield; and eight sisters, Josephine (John M.) Poole, Sylvia (Al) Huggins and Sara (Jimmy) Sellers of Chesterfield, Bennie Lou (Benny) Moore of Cheraw, Debbie Rivers of Ruby, Bonnie (Pat) Millican of Bend, Texas, Annie Freeman of Pageland, and Rachel (Tim) White of Cordell, Okla.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Gene and Dale Shaw; and a sister, Betty S. Johnson.

Arrangements were entrusted to Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Wesley Roger Beckham

LANCASTER - Wesley Roger Beckham, 65, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 29, at Rich Hill Baptist Church Burial was held in Rich Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Rich Hill Baptist Church, 1557 East Doc Garris Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058.

Born January 20, 1944 in Lancaster, Mr. Beckham was a son of the late Thomas Wesley Beckham and Margaret Emma Cauthen Beckham and was the widower of Judy Elizabeth Estridge Beckham. He was a member of Rich Hill Baptist Church and the Big Oak Hunting Club of McBee. Mr. Beckham was involved with the Soil and Water Conservation District and was a reserve officer with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department, the Lancaster Police Department and the Kershaw Police Department.

Surviving are a daughter, Holly (Marvin) Eubanks of Lancaster; a son, Brook (Jessica) Beckham of Heath Springs; a brother, Jimmy (Vivian) Beckham of Heath Springs; three sisters, Joyce Sims of Lancaster, Iris (Ronnie) Knight and Sara (Steve) Short, all of Heath Springs; and three grandchildren, Zane Tolbert, Caleb Eubanks and Blaze Eubanks.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donnie Beckham and Benny Beckham.

Arrangements were entrusted to Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

Elizabeth Gay Blakeney

HARTSVILLE - Elizabeth Gay Blakeney, 101, died Sunday, January 25, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, at the Presbyterian Home Chapel in Florence. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 2350 W. Lucas St., Florence, SC 29501.

Born in Jefferson, Mrs. Blakeney was a daughter of the late William B. and Mamie Miller Gay and was the widow of L. Roy Blakeney. A long time resident of Hartsville, she was active in community and church affairs. Mrs. Blakeney taught Sunday school at Hartsville Presbyterian Church for 50 years and was one of the first two women elected elder.

Surviving are a daughter, Ann Gay Duvall of Quinby; a son, William R. (Beth) Blakeney of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Bill) Rose of Aiken, Stephanie (Jeff) Jefferson of Simpsonville, Garland Walker (Cathy) Duvall Jr. of Cumming, Ga., W. Roy (Cindy) Blakeney Jr. of Columbia, and David B. (Susan) Blakeney of Madiens, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were entrusted to Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Sue Carolyn Covington Barnard

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. - Sue Carolyn Covington Barnard, age 75, passed away after a short illness July 8, 2009. Sue was born at the Marlboro General Hospital Nov. 15, 1933. Sue was the daughter of the late Bea Rainwater Covington and Archie Leon Covington of Bennettsville.

Two sons, Bruce C. Barnard of Palm Bay, Fla., and Keith Barnard of Warner Robins, survive Sue, as do grandchildren Lauren and Drew Barnard of Annandale, Va., and Tanner Barnard of Warner Robins; a sister, Diane (Tom) Savarese of Cheraw; two nieces, Susan Fancher of Cheraw and Jennifer Ragsdale of Cheraw; an uncle, Malcolm (Connie) Covington of Cheraw; an aunt, Netta Sills of Camden; and a cousin, Darryl (Bubba) Sanders of Charlotte, N.C.

Sue Carolyn represented Bennettsville in many beauty pageants and was Carousel Queen in the 1950s. She graduated from Bennettsville High School in 1952 and attended Columbia College until her marriage to Bruce B. Barnard of New York.

Her family and many friends will miss Sue; she was not only a beautiful person but also a loving, caring lady.

A memorial service was held this summer in Warner Robins. Sue was laid to rest in Warner Robins.

Her family wishes to thank her friends for all their kind thoughts and calls of condolences.

Wilson Jack Dalrymple

LEESVILLE - Wilson Jack Dalrymple, 63, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009. Born in Bennettsville, he was the son of the late Thomas M. and Wylma Turner Dalrymple. He was a Vietnam veteran with a Bronze Star. He enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his son, Thomas J. Dalrymple of Lexington; a daughter, Jennifer K. Dalrymple of Leesville; four grandchildren; and a sister, Delores Limehouse of Central.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a sister, Peggy Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 8, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Nancy’s Kids, 40 Lynn Ave., Cheraw, SC 29520.

Kiser Funeral Home of Cheraw is serving the family.

Jady Clinton Gulledge

RUBY - Mr. Jady Clinton Gulledge, age 78, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, at his home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 1, at Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gulledge was born October 22, 1931, in Ruby, a son of the late W.C. “Johnnie” and Flonnie Welsh Gulledge. He was a graduate of Ruby High School, where he played baseball with the Ruby Trojans. He was a former printer with the Chesterfield Advertiser and was a retired employee of A.O. Smith. Mr. Gulledge was a lifelong member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church, where he served as former deacon, Sunday school director, choir member and choir director. He enjoyed music and was a former member of the Sunlighters Quartet. Jady loved his family and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. In addition to his parents, Jady was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Jenkins Gulledge, and by his four brothers, Howard, Travis, Johnnie B. and Bobby Gulledge.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Rita) Gulledge and Kevin Gulledge of Ruby; four grandchildren, Clint (Erica) Gulledge of Chesterfield, Randall (Michelle) Hancock, Heath Gulledge and Garrett Gulledge, all of Ruby; a great-grandchild, Levi Gulledge; and two sisters, Mildred G. Thurman of Ruby and Dottie Giles of Kansas City, Mo.

Memorials may be made to Thompson Creek Baptist Church, “Meals on Wheels, ” 3403 Wamble Hill Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Milton Lee ‘Mickey’ Kimrey Sr.

CHERAW - Mr. Milton Lee “Mickey” Kimrey Sr., age 75, died Tuesday, October 27, 2009.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Kimrey was born February 18, 1934, in Cheraw, a son of the late Leo and Mable Louise Wilson Kimrey. He was a retired employee of Becker Sand & Gravel/Hanson with more than 40 years of service. Mr. Kimrey was a former member of the S.C. National Guard. Mickey was an avid fisherman and enjoyed flying model planes, gardening and riding his tractor. In addition to his parents, Mickey was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Kay Kimrey; two brothers, Jack Wilson Kimrey and Tommy Linwood Kimrey; and by his sister, Patsy Kimrey White.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Crowley Kimrey of the home; a son, Milton L. “Rocky” Kimrey Jr. (Nikki McDonald) of Cheraw; four daughters, Jerri K. Driggers (Tiffany Allen Foxworth), Lynn (Sean) Monroe, Gayle (Ricky) Crowley and Kathy Brewer, all of Cheraw; a niece, Rita Danielle Crowley of the home; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and his puppy, Precious.

Ms. Joyce Ann Smith

A TIME TO BE BORN… Ms. Joyce Ann Smith, the daughter of the Late Deacon Willie Smith, Jr. and Deaconess Katherine Smith, was born on October 23, 1949 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Ms. Smith was educated in the public school system of Cayce and was a graduate of Hopkins High School, Class of 1968. She was employed at The Midlands Center as a Mental Health Specialist for a number of years. Ms. Smith was later employed as a Mental Health Specialist and Surgeon Technician at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center for 31 years in which she retired in 2011.

“Momma Joyce", as she was affectionately called, LOVED to cook, serve and take care of ALL of her family, love ones and friends. She dedicated her life to always helping others.

Joyce Ann was a member of the Biblical House of God Church under the leadership of Pastor Mary E. Williams.

Joyce Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Katherine Smith; and brother, Aaron Lee Smith.

A TIME TO DIE…. Ms. Joyce Ann Smith departed this earth on Wednesday, December 24, 2014.

A TIME TO MOURN…. Ms. Joyce Ann Smith leaves to cherish fond memories of her: two loving sons, Nakia Mark (Min. Pamela) Smith and Andre' Jamal “A.J." Smith, all of Columbia, SC; one granddaughter, Shi'Onya N. Williams, of Columbia, SC; two brothers, Alvin J. Smith of the home and Willie (Eva) Smith, III, of Columbia, SC; one nephew, Willie E. Smith of Columbia, SC; two nieces, Gwendolyn D. Smith, of Columbia, SC and Claudette Dillard, of Newberry, SC; one great-niece, Nandi A. Smith, of Columbia, SC; one great-nephew, Patrick T. Smith, of Columbia, SC; one uncle, Bishop James Clifton (Dorothy) Smith of Orangeburg, SC; two aunts, Bertha Martin of Niagra Falls, NY and Margaret Winn of Cayce, SC; two best friends, Janie Sims and Ida Gibson; and a host of loving relatives, cousins and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
