William J. ‘Jackie’ Pittman Jr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. William J. “Jackie” Pittman Jr., age 64, died Thursday, October 29, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Mr. Pittman was born April 7, 1945, in Chesterfield, a son of the late William J. ”Jack” Pittman and Ruby “Honey” Redfearn Pittman. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, where he was a very successful athlete and was a member of the 1963 S.C. State Baseball Champion team. Jackie graduated from USC, where he played baseball. He was a former teacher and coach in Sumter and was employed as purchasing agent with Carolina Canners PepsiCo. Jackie was inspirational in starting the Recreation Department in Cheraw and served as the department’s first director. He retired after 18 years of service as a self-employed representative with Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company. In addition to his parents, Jackie was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Patricia Lisenby Pittman; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bryan and Corinne Lisenby; and by his sister-in-law, Joyce Lisenby Markusen.

Survivors include a son, William Michael Pittman of Columbia; a nephew, Bryan William (Erin) Markusen of Wake Forest, N.C.; a great nephew and niece, Aidan James Markusen and Emma Joyce Markusen of Wake Forest; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Kitt Lisenby of Chesterfield.

Memorials may be made to Chesterfield Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 388, Chesterfield, SC 29709; St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 West Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709; or to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC.

John Shane ‘Nitro’ Ratliff

RUBY - Mr. John Shane “Nitro” Ratliff, age 38, died Monday, October 26, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 29, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with Masonic Rites followed at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Ratliff was born July 7, 1971, in Chesterfield, a son of John Dalton and Patricia Jordan Ratliff. He was a truck driver. Shane was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and the Ruby Masonic Lodge # 314, where he served as chaplain. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John D. Ratliff and Jim and Alberta Jordan.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Pittman Ratliff of the home; two sons, Josh and Chris Ratliff of the home; a daughter, Alisha Ratliff of the home; a granddaughter, Madison Leigh of the home; parents, Dalton and Patricia Ratliff of Ruby; a brother, Chad (Ginni) Ratliff of Pageland; grandmother, Lois Beatrice Ratliff of Ruby; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.

Amy Hendrix Redfearn

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Amy Hendrix Redfearn, age 97, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at her home.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 1, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Redfearn was born May 22, 1912, in Greenville, a daughter of the late William Ellis Hendrix and Lou Hayes Hendrix. She was a graduate of Berea High School and received her B.A. degree from Winthrop College. Mrs. Redfearn was a retired teacher of home economics at Cheraw High School. She was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Redfearn was also a member of the Ladies Investment Club, Greater Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, Civic Club and the Historical Society. In addition to her parents, Amy was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar T. Redfearn Sr., three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include a son, Edgar T. Redfearn Jr. and wife Sandra Dutton Redfearn of Cheraw; a daughter, Amy Redfearn Moore and husband William R. Moore of Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren, Allyson B. (Allen) Stone, William R. (Diane) Moore Jr., Bradley T. Redfearn and Emily R. (Scott) Adams; 10 great-grandchildren, Hunter Bessent, Victoria Moore, Cameron Adams, Kendall Adams, Matthew Redfearn, Megan Redfearn, Brad Stone, Erin Stone, Maddie Davenport, McKenzie Davenport.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709; or Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, “Adams Shelter, ” 212 Zoar Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Colon L. Sellers

RUBY - Mr. Colon L. Sellers, age 93, died Tuesday, October 27, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29, at Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Interment with Masonic Rites followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Sellers was born June 5, 1916, in Chesterfield, a son of the late Stephen Lemuel and Maggie Ann Rivers Sellers. He was a retired printer and composer with the Charlotte Observer. Mr. Sellers was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church and the Ruby Masonic Lodge 314 for over 60 years. Colon enjoyed working and cutting wood. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. In addition to his parents, Colon was preceded in death by his seven brothers, John, Ernest, Walter, Roy, Harmon, Charlie and Wilson Sellers; and by his four sisters, Alma Allen, Mary Previtte, Lela Moore and Ada Adams.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ozie Belle Horne Sellers of the home, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Thompson Creek Baptist Church, “Meals on Wheels, ” 3403 Wamble Hill Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Quick Smith

Cynthia “Cindy” Quick Smith, 47, of Charlotte, formerly of Cheraw, has gone to be with the Heavenly Father and his Beloved Son Jesus. She passed away at home on October 26, 2009, after a courageous battle with a rare cancer of the appendix.
Cindy was born on June 10, 1962, to Charles Harrison and Anita Campbell Quick in Cheraw. Her father Charles, her niece Kelsey Ann Quick, and her nephew, William Eckart Smith-Butz precede her in death. She is survived by her beloved husband, Stephen Smith of Charlotte; her mother Anita; three brothers, Scott, Wayne and Tony Quick of Cheraw and Patrick, and their wives Lisa, Jada and Tonda. She is also survived by her nieces, Taylor and Hannah, and her nephews Cruz, Cameron, Zack and Jamie.

Cindy was proud to have served her country as a member of the United States Air Force. During her service she received the Airman of the Year award as well as a commendation for meritorious service. She was honorably discharged in 1987.
During the time Cindy met and married Mr. Keith Raynolds, now of San Antonio, Texas. Cindy is a graduate of the University of Texas-San Antonio. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in interdisciplinary studies and began her career as an educator of children with the San Antonio public school system. Cindy moved to Charlotte in 1997 and became a well-loved and respected third grade teacher at Selwyn Elementary. She achieved National Board Certification in 2003. Cindy's heart and efforts were always with the children she taught, and her greatest joys came from teaching children.

A memorial service and reception will be held at Harrison UMC in Pineville, N.C., Thursday, November 5, at 6 p.m.

The world is a better place for having had her in it.

Charles Thomas (Tommy) Boykin

BISHOPVILLE - Funeral services for Charles Thomas (Tommy) Boykin, age 62, who passed away Oct. 12, 2009, were held Wed. at 4:00 pm at the Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Rev. B.R. Wallace and Rev. Mike Allen officiated. Burial was in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home (www.nortonfh.net).

Tommy was born in Bishopville, a son of the late Odell and Polly Outlaw Boykin. He was a member of the McBee Presbyterian Church, where he was a former elder, and attended Cedar Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife: Shirley McGee Boykin of Bishopville; daughters: Lori (Johnny) Barfield of Hartsville, Christy (Franklin) Moody, Susan (Kirby) Wayne and Shannon (Curtis) Outlaw of McBee; step daughter: Heather Motley of Bishopville; step sons: Jason (Brittany) Welch of Bishopville and Chad Welch of Columbia; grandchildren: Justin and Jenna Barfield, Courtney Morris, Caitlyn Moody, Bethany Hutchinson, Anna Catherine and Corey Wayne, Zachary and Meridith Outlaw, Madison and Myles Motley, Christian, Gracie and Wyatt Welch.

Mary Alice Tarlton Lowery

CHERAW - Mrs. Mary Alice Tarlton Lowery, age 89, died Sunday, October 11, 2009.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Lowery was born November 3, 1919, in Wadesboro, N.C., a daughter of the late Jesse William and Clara Lee Howell Tarlton. She was a homemaker and a former greeter at Walmart. Mrs. Lowery was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Lennox Eugene Lowery; her three sons, Billy, Bobby, and Gene Lowery; two brothers, Julian and J. W. Tarlton; and by a sister Shirley Bowman.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Cheri Lowery of Cheraw, Billie Jo (Roger) Moore of Ruby, Mary Nancy (Lee) Gibbs of Florence and Lane (Jennifer) Lowery of Chesterfield; four great-grandchildren; a brother, John Duncan Tarlton of Burlington, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Cameron of Southern Pines, N.C.; and two daughters-in-law, Betty Joe Lowery and Connie Lowery of Cheraw.

Frances Garris Morris

CHERAW - Frances Garris Morris, 81, died Thursday, October 8, 2009.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late David A. and Bertie Lee Lyons Garris. She was the widow of Williams Rufus Morris. She was a member of First Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Tony Ray Morris and Mitchell Steven Morris, both of Cheraw; a daughter, Jennie Frances Brewington of Gaffney; grandchildren, Micheal Scott Morris and William Joseph Morris; and a great-grandchild, Dylan Shane Turner.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above; brothers, Carlie Ray Garris and William Garris; a son, William Rufus “Ricky” Garris Jr.; a grandson, James Steven Morris; and a great-grandchild, Nicholas Hunter Downer.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, at First Southern Methodist Church, Cheraw. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Christopher Matthew Jansen

March 30, 1985-September 15, 2009

Christopher Matthew Jansen, 24, Raymore, died September 15, 2009, at the St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born March 30, 1985, in Overland Park, Kansas, the son of Steven D. and Barbara J. (Harvey) Jansen.

Mr. Jansen was a lifelong resident of Cass County. He had worked for RGIS as an inventory specialist for more than five years. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Raymore.

Surviving are his father, Steve Jansen and his wife Shelley, Harrisonville; his mother, Barbara Jansen, Raymore; a brother, Anthony Asbury, Sedalia; four sisters, Tonya Machelle Hays, Peculiar, Stacy Jansen, Anderson, Sarah Cummings and Anna Cole, both of Harrisonville; his grandparents, Ernest and Joyce Jansen, Cheraw, Jeanette Harvey, Raymore, and Carole Carey, Harrisonville.

Memorial services were September 20 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Raymore.

Hazel Louise Griggs

Lancaster - Miss Hazel Louise Griggs, age 71, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield. Interment will follow in the Griggs Cemetery, Patrick.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Miss Griggs was born November 20, 1937, in Patrick, a daughter of the late John Wilson and Mary Lee Starling Griggs. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Jim Griggs; four sisters, Beverly Sue Griggs O’Neal, Bill Winburn, Nellie Mae Huggins and Sarah Lewis.

Survivors include a brother, John W. Griggs Jr. of Williamston; a sister, Lucille Riley of Patrick; and a host of nieces and nephews.
