Veal, Connally

ELBERTON, Ga. — Connally Hammond Veal Sr., 78, of 130 Wildwood Drive died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Franklin County, he was retired from the Georgia Department of Revenue, Central Audit Division as a senior auditor. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Eighth Air Froce, 384th Bomber Group. He was awarded the Air Medal and five oak leaf clusters to the Air Medal. He was a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church and was a member of the Victory Sunday school class.

Surviving are widow, Grace Howell Veal; son, Connally H. Veal Jr. of Bowman; two grandchildren; and brothers, Jack Veal of Elberton and Curtis Veal Sr. of Anderson.

He was the son of the late James M. and Catherine Sullivan Veal. He was preceded in death by four sisters; and two brothers.

Services are at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, Elberton by the Revs. Steve Fenlon and Craig Brogdon; burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.

The family will be at the home.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Family Life Center of the Elberton First Baptist Church, or to the St. Mary’s Hospice Services, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, Ga. 30604.

Hicks Funeral Home, Elberton, is in charge of arrangments.

Perry, Fannie

WESTMINSTER — Fannie Elzora Gordon Perry, 86, of 1512 Dr. Johns Road died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Easley.

Born in Oconee County, she was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church of Westminster.

Surviving sisters, Drucilla Carter and Rachel Gordon, both of Westminster.

She was the widow of Carl Perry and the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Winnie Williams Gordon.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at W.D. Addison Memorial Chapel of Adams Mortuary, Seneca. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home of a sister, Drucilla Carter, 198 Pittman Circle, Westminster.

Keese, Thaddis

Thaddis Keese, 75, of 9-A Caldwell Village Apartments, Anderson, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a member of the Generostee Baptist Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Sylvia Small of Anderson; brother, Sam Keese of Burlington, N.C.; and one granddaughter.

He was the son of the late Manuel and Emma Cunningham Keese. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wade Cunningham and Albert Keese.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Generostee Baptist Church; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnson, Jeffrey D. ‘Pete’

LAVONIA, Ga. — Jeffrey D. “Pete” Johnson, 40, of 195 Light Branch Road died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Cobb Memorial Hosptial, in Royston.

Born in Lavonia, he was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and a graduate of Franklin County High School.

Surviving are daughter, Latisha Barnes of Lavonia; son, Jermaine Barnes of Atlanta; sister, Mary S. Oglesby of Hartwell; brothers, Farris Johnson of Royston, George Johnson of Atlanta, and David Johnson; and one grandchild.

He was the son of the late Lizzie M. Johnson and Denver Johnson.

Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Berryman; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, Toccoa.

The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Buford Oglesby, 105 Rose St., Hartwell.

Johnson, Bert M.

SENECA — Bert M. Johnson, 90, of 509 Bruce Hill Blvd. died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the home of his daughter.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Gilbert Funeral Parlor.

The family will be at the home.

Reece, Larry R.

BELTON — Larry Richard Reece, 53, of 200 Wright School Road died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was a carpenter.

Surviving are widow, Vickie Reece of the home; sons, Larry Wayne “Ricks” Reece of Belton and Tot Dean of Anderson; brother, Jerry Reece of Belton; and four grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Elizabeth and Harrison Reece.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church cemetery. The body is at Cox Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The family is at the home of his nephew, Kevin Reece, 303 Kirby Road, Belton.

McRee, Lois Simmons

DACUSVILLE — Sara Lois Simmons McRee, 66, of 428 Deer Creek Road, Easley, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at her residence.

Born in Pickens County, she graduated from Dacusville High School and had retired from Ryobi in Pickens. She was a member of Griffin Baptist Church.

Surviving are widower, Charles F. McRee of the home; son, Martin F. “Mark” McRee of Ocean Springs, Miss.; daughter, Karen McRee of the home; brothers, W. Curtis Simmons of Union, F. Wayne Simmons of Anderson and Hal D. Simmons of Greenville; sisters, Edith S. Raines, Margaret S. Holder and Colene S. McAlister, all of Easley, Carol S. Plumblee of Travelers Rest and Jean S. Cox of Taylors; and one grandson of the home.

She was the daughter of the late Furman Oscar and Clara Trotter.

Services are at 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Easley, by the Rev. Allen McAlister; burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, prior to the funeral home.

The family is at the home.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615, or Hospice Care of South Carolina, 3211 Reidville Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301.

Acree, Hazel

REX, Ga. — Hazel Pye Acree, 72, of 3060 Bobolink Drive died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Southern Regional Medical Center in Rex.

Born in LaGrange, she was merchandising manager for the Cleveland Avenue Kmart Stores in Atlanta.

Surviving are daughters, Marie Acree of the home, Jo Kemp and Carol Hillstrand, both of Rex, Brenda Lee Booth of Morrow and Barbara A. Cannon of Anderson; sister, Darthy Riggs of California; and six grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Leonard Lloyd Pye and Maudie Francis Williamson.

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Sherwood Memorial Park in Rex with the Rev. Johnny C. Cannon officiating.

Pope Dickson & Son Funeral Home, 1210 Morrow Road, Morrow was in charge of arrangements.

Evans Jr., Carl

Carl Hubert Evans Jr., 46, of Anderson died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Greenwood County, he was pallet maker with Anderson Steel Processing. He was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are daughter, Crystal Renea Pepper of Anderson, and two grandchildren.

She was the son of the late Carl Hubert Evans Sr. and Lula Inez Cannon Evans. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Roy Evans.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Old Silverbrook Cemetery with the Rev. Archie L. Morgan officiating. The body is at Woodlawn Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials be made to The Haven of Rest Ministries, 219 W. Whitner St., Anderson, S.C. 29625.

Davis, Esther S.

LIBERTY — Esther Sitton Davis, 86, formerly of Liberty, died Monday, April 15, 2002, in Detroit.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by S.C. Franks Chapel of Remembrance.

Brooks, Myrtis

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Myrtis Palmer Brooks, 56, of Batesville Community died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center, Demorest.

Born in Habersham County, she was employed with the Scoville Fastner Company for 35 years. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Batesville, and lived at Habersham County all of her life.

Surviving are widower, Joe Brooks of Clarkesville; daughters, Jennifer B. Bentley of Blakeley, Jaime Brooks and Janet Brooks, both of Clarkesville; son, Joe Brooks Jr. of Clarkesville; brother, Gerald Palmer of Clarkesville; sisters, Marjorie Coe and Doris Yudick, both of Clarkesville, Geraldine Williams of Demorest and Lydia VonBargen of Cornelia; and two grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Olith Newport Palmer. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Elmer Palmer.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Providence Baptist Church, Batesville, with Dr. Don Drawdy; burial in the church cemetery. The body is at Hillside Memorial Chapel and the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Wiley, Artis

PENDLETON — Artis Wiley, 91, of 321 Keese St. died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was a member of New Propsect Baptist Church in Townville, where he was former Superintendent of the Sunday school, former chairman of the Deacon Board and a former member of the WMWA Society. He was retired from Clemson University.

Surviving are daughters, Mae Ellen Beatty of Fort Washington, Md., Merdis Wiley of Pendleton, Zenobia Blanding and Emily Jones, both of Anderson, and Shirley Haymon of Westminster; son, Nathaniel Wiley of Anderson; sister, Mary Lee Powell of Philadelphia, Pa., broters, Alonzo Wiley of Brookly, N.Y., and Roosevelt Wiley of Seneca; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was the widower of Velma M. Wiley and the son of the late Will and Hattie Wiley. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Iola Earl and Celia Walker; and four brothers, Wallace, T.B., Ernest, and Lucas Wiley. He was first married to the late Ellen Morris Wiley.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at New Prospect Baptist Church by Dr. William Clark, Dr. E. F. Mathis, Dr. C.R. Lewis and the Rev. Doris Jones; burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
