CHERAW - Betty J. James, 64, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009. Born in Society Hill, she was a daughter of Eloise K. Hicks of Darlington and the late Joe Moree. She was the widow of Ray James. She had served on the council of the Chicora Tribe. She had been a member and past secretary of the Cash Fire Department. She was politically active and had worked on several projects in her community. She attended United Fellowship of God Church. She enjoyed making Native American jewelry and crocheting.
Surviving are her sons, Earl (Gail) James of Cheraw, Paul (Darlene) James of Society Hill and Gene Freeman of Hartsville; a daughter, Jennie (Rusty) Chapman of Cheraw; her mother listed above; brothers, Henry Moree of Society Hill, Joe Moree of Hartsville, Alvin Keith of Milo, Maine and Larry D. Keith of Society Hill; sisters, Shirley Moree Freeman of Cheraw, Evelyn Adams of Darlington, Linda Hall of Society Hill and Kay Hall of Hartsville; grandchildren, Brittany Baker, Dylan Freeman, Erica Freeman, Selena James and Jesse Ray (J.R.) Chapman.
She was preceded in death by her husband and father listed above, and brothers, Randy C. Keith and Thomas H. Keith.
A funeral service was held 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 9, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, and burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Linda Walker Miller
CHERAW - Linda Walker Miller, 56, died September 4, 2009.
Graveside services were held September 7 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Born in Collinsville, Pa., Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late Thomas W. and Juanita Brakeiron Walker. She attended Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, John Thomas Harris, and her daughter, Maria H. Felkel, both of Cheraw; stepchildren, John M. Harris of Beaufort and Lynn Lewis of Clearwater, Fla.; brothers, Thomas W. Walker Jr. of Columbia, Allen Ray Walker Sr. of Bennettsville and Robert Daniel Walker of Cheraw; sisters, Mary Ellen Singleterry of Wadesboro, N.C., Debra Ann Williams of Orange Park, Fla., Lesa Lynn McIntyre of Rockingham, N.C., and Susan Grace Noehl of Mrytle Beach; and eight grandchildren.
Arrangements were entrusted to Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw.
David Privette
CHESTERFIELD - Mr. David Privette, age 62, died Thursday, October 8, 2009.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, at Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Privette was born July 4, 1947, in Wadesboro, N.C., a son of the late Levine Isaac and Nancy Ruth Jordan Privette. He was a graduate of Ruby High School and Chesterfield-Marlboro Tec. Mr. Privette was a retired auto and insurance salesman. David was a U.S. Marine veteran, having served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was a member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Privette.
Survivors include a son, James David (Tina) Privette II of Rio Rancho, N.M.; a daughter, Melissa (Lance) Abernathy of Chesterfield; six grandchildren, Zack, Tyler and Noah Privette, Jayden, Lana and Lex Abernathy; six brothers, Alvin Privette of Wadesboro, Mike Privette of Mt. Croghan, Billy Privette of New London, N.C., Ronnie Privette of Pageland, Larry Privette of Stanley, N.C., and Tommy Privette of Morven, N.C.; a sister, Tammy Timmons of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Wilbert Kenneth Quick Jr.
RUBY - Mr. Wilbert Kenneth Quick Jr., age 42, died Saturday, October 3, 2009.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 5, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Quick was born May 8, 1967, in Florence, a son of Louise White “Dooley” Quick and the late Wilbert Kenneth Quick Sr. He was a mechanical contractor with Grady F. Griggs & Son Welding. Wilbert was an avid horse lover and enjoyed his horse-drawn buggies and wagons.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Bailey Quick of the home; two sons, Osstyn Neely of Hephzibah, Ga., and Mikey Pierce of Ruby; two daughters, Tiffany Quick of Hephzibah, Ga., and Teresa Pierce of Ruby; his mother, Louise White “Dooley” Quick of Cheraw; a sister, Vandy (Brent) Surratt of Cheraw; three nieces; and two nephews.

Margaret Burch Bedell
CHERAW - Margaret Burch Bedell, 89, passed away on September 30, 2009, at Chesterfield General Hospital. Margaret was born on September 20, 1920, in rural Chesterfield County and recently celebrated her 89th birthday in the Chesterfield General Hospital surrounded by many loving family members.
In 1942 she married “A.T.” Thompson Jr. and had one son. A.T joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was killed in action over the English Channel in September 1943. In 1946 she married James F. Bedell and had one son and a daughter. Margaret was an active member of First Baptist Church, Cheraw, for many years and participated in Sunday school, Circle meetings, as well as senior activities, including bus trips to many exciting locations. Over the years she worked for three different textile companies in and around Cheraw; however, her most rewarding and last position before retirement was secretary to the hospital administrator at Chesterfield General Hospital.
Margaret is survived by her sons, Travis Thompson and wife Linda of Cary, N.C., Jim Bedell and wife Joyce of Marion; her daughter, Susan Weathers and husband, Landy of Bowman; her sister, Sarah Gregg of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Julie Jones, James Bedell, Merrill Helmke and Landrum Weathers; one step-grandson, Stoney Turbeville; and three great-grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by husband A.T. Thompson in 1943, husband Jim Bedell in 1984 and a brother, Donald H. Burch, in 2005.
The family will receive friends at the home in Cheraw Friday, October 2, 2009, until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be held in the foyer of the family life center at First Baptist Church, 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009.
A funeral service will be held in the church sanctuary at 2:00 p.m. following the visitation. Burial will be in Old Saint David’s Cemetery.

The family would like to express their love and appreciation to Margaret’s care givers over these last five years for their tender loving care. They were Mildred Sellers, Beverly Suhy, Doris Gainey, Gayle Grant and Janie Brock. The family also wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Chesterfield General Hospital for the wonderful and thoughtful care given during these last few weeks.

Hubert L. Felkel Sr.
CHERAW - Hubert L. Felkel Sr., 72, died Saturday, September 26, 2009.
Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Harold E. Sr. and Doris Ingram Felkel. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Felkel was an attendant at the GATE Service Station for many years. He enjoyed fishing and reading.
Surviving are his son Bucky Felkel of Cheraw; daughters, Cindy (Tim) Allison of Cheraw, Vickee (Johnny) Thomas of Wallace, Wanda (Barney) Bethea of Bennettsville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church, Cheraw. Burial with military honors will be in Old Saint David’s Cemetery.

Gerald Newsom Hendrick
MT. CROGHAN - Gerald Newsom Hendrick, age 82, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2009, at Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hendrick was born May 30, 1927, in Mt. Croghan, a son of the late John Blair and Bernice Moore Hendrick. He was a graduate of Mt. Croghan High School where he excelled in basketball. Mr. Hendrick was co-operator of H and H Service Station for many years and retired in 1989 from Pageland Screen Printers. He was a U. S. Army veteran, a charter member of the American Legion Post 134 and a member of Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Gerald loved nature and was an avid gardener.
In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his brother, Billie Blair Hendrick, and his sister, Maxine H. Boan.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Clara Ratliff Hendrick of the home; two sons, Gary Blair (Peggy) Hendrick of Florence and Gerald N. “Jerry” Hendrick Jr. of Columbia; two daughters, Gwendolyn H. (Mickey) Sullivan of Cheraw and Kathy H. Baker of Surfside Beach; seven grandchildren, Wendy, Jennifer, Michael, Greg, Daniel, Shea and Kelsie; and eight great- grandchildren.

Ruth Perry Savarese
CHERAW - Ruth Perry Savarese, 97, went to be with the Lord on September 26, 2009. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., May 2, 1912, she was one of 12 children born to the late Thomas and Margaret Perry.
She is predeceased by her sisters, Helen, Dorothy, Dolores, Margaret and Veronica (the latter two having died in early childhood) and her brothers, Richard, George, Robert and Thomas.
Surviving are her sister Mary Ruhl of Gainsville, Fla., and a brother, Christian Brother John Perry of New York.
In 1937, Ruth married Alphonse Savarese, since deceased (d. 1992). They lived in Baldwin, N.Y., for 50 years and were the loving parents of two sons: John Savarese, M.D., Ph.D. of Collegeville, Pa., and Thomas Savarese, M.S. of Cheraw.
Ruth was blessed with eight grandchildren, Mathew, Mark, Andrew, Amyln, Leana and Corinne Savarese of Collegeville and Susan Fancher and Jennifer Ragsdale of Cheraw. Her great-grandchildren are Justin Fancher and Evan Ragsdale of Cheraw. Ruth was a devoted spouse, loving mother and grandmother and matriarch of the extended family. May she rest in peace.
A memorial mass will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Cheraw.

Carl Calvin Stephenson
PAGELAND - Carl Calvin Stephenson, 85, died Saturday, September 26, 2009, in Efland, N.C. after a brief illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Zion United Methodist Church, 647 Zion Church Road, Pageland, SC 29728.
He was born on June 7, 1924, in Buffalo, Ohio, to George Kempton and Mirtie Newman Stephenson. Carl married his childhood sweetheart, Donna Lee Saultz, and they recently celebrated their 61st anniversary. A graduate of Buffalo High School and Cambridge Business College, he served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. The majority of his career was in the accounting field working for both private accounting firms and the John Deere Corporation. He was co-owner of C&D Oil Company in Cambridge, Ohio. After retirement, the family moved to Pageland in 1979.
Mr. Stephenson was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church in Buffalo and later Zion United Methodist Church in Pageland. He held a variety of positions in both churches, including Sunday school teacher. He was a Cub Scout leader and a Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; two sons, James F. Stephenson (Deborah) of Efland and Jeffrey D. Stephenson of Bluffton; two grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Della Brown of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; his eldest son, Carl C. Stephenson and his wife, Kimberly Jo of Cambridge; a sister, Sarah Girdeline “Girtie” Tedrick of Titusville, Fla.; brothers Daniel Leroy of Buffalo, Russel Blain of Buffalo, Allan Boyd of West Lafayette, Ohio, Hobart Carman of Akron, Ohio, Erma Wilford of Cleveland, Ohio, Ernest David of Port Washington, Ohio, Edward Guy of Buffalo and George Forest of Buffalo.
South Carolina Services: A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, at Zion United Methodist Church in Pageland.
Ohio Services: A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 2, at the Buffalo Cemetery in Buffalo.
Arrangements were entrusted to Sutton-Baumgartner Funeral Home in Pageland.
