Willie Alvin Smith

WALLACE - Willie Alvin Smith, 73, died Saturday, August 2, 2014. Born in Moore County, NC he was a son of the late Luther Bryant Smith and Polly Cox Moore. He was the retired owner (35+ years) of Piedmont Welders of Wallace, SC. He had 35 welding certifications. He had worked in most of the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Surviving is his wife, Pam Alexander Smith of the home, a son, Ken Smith of Cheraw, SC, a daughter, Tammie Smith of Cheraw, SC, brothers, Bryant (Peggy) Smith of Cheraw, SC, Gene (Norma) Smith of Farmville, NC, a sister, Carolyn (Roger) Gallagher of Wallace, SC, two grandchildren, also, numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, a brother Frankie Smith and Harley Jackson “Jack” Rushing, Sr. who was as close as a brother, and best friend, for over 40+ years.

A visitation was held 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Old Saint David’s Cemetery.

Nancy Overton Clover

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Nancy Overton Clover, 79 of Charlotte NC passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 30th at Wilora Lake Healthcare Center. She was born to Nathan Frank Overton and Louise Tate Overton in Sumter SC on September 9th 1934.

Nancy is survived by her children, John Howard Bennett 4th, (Carolyn), Andrew Overton Bennett, (Tracie), and Nancy Bennett Jolly, (Allan), grandchildren: Maxium, Anton, William and Sarah, a sister Lou Overton Hendley, (Tom), of Cheraw SC, and many nieces and nephews.

Per Nancy’s wishes, there will not be a service. The Family would like to thank Hospice of Charlotte for the excellent care of our Mother over these past two years. Carolina Funeral & Cremation was entrusted with the service. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinafuneral.com

Allen Fred Driggers

WALLACE – Allen Fred Driggers, 70, passed away peacefully to his heavenly home on July 31, 2014 after a courageous 15 month battle with Myelodysplasia and Leukemia. He was the son of the late Fred Harden Driggers and Meater Kelly Driggers.

Mr. Driggers retired from Stanley Tools after 27 years of service. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and had served as a Trustee. He was a sports fan and enjoyed watching ballgames and races. He was an excellent fisherman and that was a favorite past time for him. He also enjoyed having a vegetable garden and sharing it with friends.

Home and family were most important to him. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father, and outstanding “PA”.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years and 9 months, Patsy Kimrey Driggers of the home, a daughter, Myra Driggers Levine &son-in-law, Bobby, a grandson, Austin Smith, a step-grandson, Brad Levine, a sister, Bessie Mae Teal & brother-in-law, James.

Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Sharon Ann Hammond

CHESTERFIELD - Miss Sharon Ann Hammond, age 63, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at her home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 1, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Friday, August 1, 2014 prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Sherry was born March 21, 1951 in Wadesboro, NC, the daughter of the late William Jackson Hammond, Sr. and Lina Mildred Bacot Hammond. She was a 1969 graduate of Chesterfield High School and a 1973 graduate of Winthrop University, where she was a graduate assistant and taught freshman history. She taught special education at Chesterfield High School and had a long career with the SC Department of Social Services, working with Child Protective Services and Adult Services. She was a licensed SC Social Worker and retired in 2003. Sherry was a life long member of Chesterfield Baptist Church.

Sherry was an avid sports fan, and especially liked the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Chesterfield High School Rams. She enjoyed golf and fishing. Sherry loved both reading and music, and had an extensive collection of books, albums, and CDs. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her great friends.

Survivors include 2 Brothers: Jackie (Luann) Hammond of Chesterfield, SC and Rick (Lobie) Hammond of Cheraw, SC; Nieces: Rachel (Clint) Gulledge and Hannah King of Chesterfield, SC; Nephews: Travis (Frannie) Hammond of Columbia, SC and David (Shelly) Morgan of Cheraw, SC; Great Nephews: James Gulledge and Kolin Campbell; and Great Nieces: Allie Vaughn and Mary Catherine Hammond.

Lera Ballard King

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Lera Ballard King, age 87, died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at her home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Monday, July 28, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. King was born August 24, 1926 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Clarence Frank and Vera Virginia Davidson Ballard. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School. Lera was a homemaker and a retired lunchroom manager at Chesterfield Middle School with 20 years of service. She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class, and sent weekly bulletins to all the shut-ins. Lera enjoyed cooking, mowing grass, and taking care of all her family. In addition to her parents, Lera was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Floyd King; three sisters, Vera White, Jackie Thrush, Omogene Eargle; and two half-sisters; Debra Ballard and Laura Sheppard.

Survivors include Children: Lula K. Barrs of Indian Trail, NC, Virginia K. (Danny) Russell of Matthews, NC, Terry F. (Karen) King of Indian Trail, NC, Jerry R. (Jeanie) King of Chesterfield, SC and Donna K. (Lynn) Gooden of Patrick, SC; Grandchildren: Angie (Tim) Burch, Teresa (Chris) Blanton, Rodney (Jill) Russell, Ryan Russell, Matt and Kameron King, Chance King, (Brittany Martin), Ben and Kelley King, Dustin Gooden (Laura Cutchin) and Casey Gooden (Spencer McLeod); Also 10 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great, Great Grandchild; 2 Sisters: Virginia King and Ruby Smith both of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Half-brothers: C. F. Ballard of Burlington, NC and Tommy Ballard of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Half-sister: Martha Benenhaley of Mint Hill, NC; Caregivers: Sandra Bennett, Melanie Griffith, Sherry Hinson, Moe Zwiefka, Kaye Wallace, Eleanor Webb, and Joy Oliver.

William Walter King Jr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. William Walter King, Jr., age 77, died Thursday, July 24, 2014.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. King was born July 3, 1937 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late William Walter King, Sr. and Ella Rivers King. He was a 1955 graduate of Chesterfield High School, and a 1959 graduate of USC, where he received his BA degree in education. Walter was a retired school administrator with 32 years of service in Public Education in S.C. Walter was a former assistant principal for 12 years and worked for 20 years with the federal program including 15 years with the SC Department of Education. Following his retirement, Walter worked as store manager with B.C. Moore’s and Goodys. Mr. King was a member of ShilohUnited Methodist Church and a former member of Chesterfield Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, and taught Sunday school for 50 years. In addition to his parents, Walter was also preceded in death by his brother, Frankie King.

Survivors include Nephew: Jason (Charlotte) King of Chesterfield, SC; Great Niece: Gracie King, and Great Nephew, Jake King of Chesterfield, SC; and Sister-in-law: Martha Griggs King of Chesterfield, SC.

Maggie Ann Tjaden

HARTSVILLE - A celebration of Life for Maggie Ann Tjaden, age 78 who went to her Heavenly Home peacefully surrounded by her family, will be held Tuesday at 4:00 at the Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Jeff Williams and Rev. Ernest Winburn will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville. Visitation will be Monday 5-7 pm at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Tjaden was born in Hartsville a daughter of the late James Fuller & Fannie Mae Lunsford Griggs. She was a Life Long member of Cedar Creek Baptist church, a member of the choir and a member of the Merridian Sunday School Class. Surviving are her husband, Darwin Robert Tjaden, Cheraw; two daughters, Donna (Hal) Baldwin, Hartsville and Tena (Tommy) Jordan, Greenwood; four brothers, Bobby Gene (Evelyn) Griggs, Rock Hill, Wilson (Carolyn) Griggs, Bud (Linda) Griggs and Ronnie (Diane) Griggs, all of Hartsville; two sisters, Billie Stoudemire and Patsy Griggs, both of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Thomas (Cara) Jordan, Tanner (Catherine) Jordan, Taylor Jordan, Maggie & Melli Baldwin and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Lou Tolson Howle. Memorials may be made to the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 1635 Cedar Creek Road, Hartsville, S.C. 29550.

Grady Brown Sr.

WALLACE - Grady Brown, Sr., 90, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late Hugh and Ola Cross Brown. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. Mr. Brown was a World War II Navy Veteran.

Surviving is his wife, Louise Quick Brown of the home, daughters, Martina B. (David) Thomas of Lexington, SC, Janet B Hines of Wallace, Kay B. Hall of Wallace, SC, sisters, Dorothy (Tom) Barnhill of Greenville, SC, Shirley (Lloyd) Brennan of Pinehurst, NC, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, also, a son Grady Brown, Jr., brothers, Hubert Brown, James Brown, sisters, Sadie Long, Rachel Hall, Ruby Eddins and Zella Henley.

A graveside service was held 2:00 PM, Friday, July 18, 2014 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

Shirley M. Johnson

PAGELAND - Miss Shirley M. Johnson, age 78, died Saturday, July 12, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 14, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church.

Miss Johnson was born March 23, 1936 in Ninety Six, SC the daughter of the late John G. and Nettie Mae Owens Johnson. She was a graduate of Pageland High School. Shirley was a legal secretary for 55 years and retired as legal secretary with Attorney James I. Redfearn after almost 50 years of service. She was a charter member of the Chesterfield County Rural Water Agency, which she helped to organize. She also presently serves as a member of the Board of Directors. Shirley was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, WMU Director, choir member, nursery worker, church council member, GA worker, and on many other committees. She truly loved her church. Shirley enjoyed cooking and is known for her delicious cakes, pies, and her outstanding pumpkin loaf which she shared with all the sick and shut-ins in the community. In addition to her parents, Shirley is also preceded in death by her brother John T. Johnson.

Survivors include Cousins: Rachel Funderburk, Bonnie Hendrix, and Martha Henshaw all of Pageland, SC; Special Cousin and Chauffeur: Tracy Deese of Pageland, SC; Sister-in-law: Fay Johnson of Pageland, SC; Nephew: John Frank “Scoot” Johnson of Pageland, SC; Nieces: Ellen Eudy of Wingate, NC and Bobbie Jones of Whiteville, NC.

Lillie Sullivan Mangum

PAGELAND - Mrs. Lillie Sullivan Mangum, age 89, died Sunday, July 13, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Zion United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation immediately followed the committal service in Zion Hall.

Mrs. Mangum was born November 24, 1924 in Jefferson, SC a daughter of the late Arthur Daniel and Annie Frances Deason Sullivan. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School and a retired employee of Springmaid Industries. Mrs. Mangum was a long time member of Zion United Methodist Church. Lillie enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, tatting, quilting, and gardening. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Thomas Mangum; her son-in-law, C.D. Hinson; a brother, Lemuel Sullivan; and by 3 sisters, Vera Sullivan, Effie S. Hunter, and Kate S. Williams.

Survivors include Son: Jackie T. Mangum and wife Glenda of Pageland, SC; Daughter: Linda Mangum Hinson of Anderson, SC; 3 Grandchildren: Kim Hinson (Scott) Taylor, Danny (Wendy) Hinson, and Emily Mangum (Blake) Edwards; 2 Great Grandchildren: Hannah and Rebekah Taylor; 1 Sister: Leona S. Hicks of Jefferson, SC; 1 Sister-in-law: Myrtle M. Kemenczky of Charlotte, NC.

Lawrence Esco Middlebrooks

SPARTANBURG - Lawrence Esco Middlebrooks of Spartanburg, SC passed Sunday morning, July 13, 2014. He was the son of the late T.N .and Florence Middlebrooks and the husband of Jeane Page.

Mr. Middlebrooks was a World War II Navy veteran and was deployed in Hawaii. He retired from Southern Bell and lived in Florence, SC prior to relocating to Summit Hills Retirement Community in Spartanburg, SC.

Larry will always be remembered for his wonderful smile, cheerful whistling and positive attitude. He was an avid Gamecock fan and also loved to watch old westerns.

Mr. Middlebrooks is survived by his wife Jeane Page; daughter, Martha Bridgeman and two step daughters, Jean Page Watson and Lisa (William) Clarkson ; grandchildren, Campbell and Cameron Bridgeman, Leslie (John) Lee, Chase (Lesley Jean) Watson, Laura Katherine (John) Folger and four great grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Larry Middlebrooks was held at Summit Hills Retirement Community at the Senate Lounge on Tuesday, July 15th at 2:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Florence, SC at a later date.
