Dessie F. Addis

Dessie Louis Fowler Addis, 63, of C. Street, Jonesville, died Thursday, Dec.4, 2003, at 10:50 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jerry W. Boyd

Jerry Wright Boyd, 73, of 336 Pineneedle Road, Union, widow of James W. Boyd, died at her residence this morning. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Hugh Sanders
World War II veteran

WHITMIRE - Hugh Sanders, 83, died Nov. 24, 2003, in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Sanders was born in Whitmire on Aug. 25, 1920, a son of the late Pickney C. Sanders and Mary Magalene Sanders. A former member of Flint Hill Baptist Church he joined Greater Grace Temple Pentecostal Church in Detroit. He served with the 63rd Aviation Squadron and as a sergeant in the 146th Port Co., 5th Regiment in World War II.

He was predeceased by a sister, Etta (Sanders) Shell and five brothers, Butler, John, Sam, Pickney Jr. and Judson. Surviving are three nephews, Hugh P. Sanders of Ellicott City, Md., Jutson Shell of Yonkers, N.Y. and Harold Shell of Honolulu, Hawaii; a niece, Shirley Sanders Maurice of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and three great nieces and a sister-in-law, Hestella Sanders of Washington, D.C.; cousins, Beaute L. Glymph and Lula Sanders of Whitmire, Luella Baccus of Rock Hill, Wade Sanders of Virginia Beach, Va., and Carrie Sanders of Washington.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hunter Funeral Home Chapel in Whitmire with burial in Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the h homes of Mrs. Hattie Henderson, 480 Duckett Ave. and Mrs. Beaute L. Glymph, 114 Nelson St., in Whitmire. Arrangements by Hunter Funeral Home of Whitmire.

Clifton E. Bates
Union native

ELLIOTT CITY, Md. - Funeral services for Clifton E. (Cee) Bates, son of the late Caldwell and Eula Mae Bates, were held this morning in Elliott City, Md. Mr. Bates died Dec. 2, 2002 in Elliott City. Announcement courtesy of Union Community Funeral Home.

Francis Stehle Harvey
Owner of Peoples Furniture Co.

JONESVILLE - Francis (Frank) Stehle Harvey, 70, husband of Betty Garner Harvey, of 120 Stehle St., Jonesville, died Dec. 5, 2002, at his home after a brief illness. Mr. Harvey was born in Jonesville on Sept. 23, 1932, a son of the late Oscar and Sophie Stehle Harvey. He was manager and owner of Peoples Furniture Co. for over 40 years and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard, Jonesville Unit. Mr. Harvey was an active member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Thomas H. (Rita H.) Ivey of Jonesville and Mrs. Robert L. (Shelia H.) Chapman of Spartanburg; one son, Terry W. Harvey of Holly Hill; four grandchildren, Cam Robinson and Clint Robinson both of Jonesville, Brittany Harvey of Holly Hill and Liza Chapman of Spartanburg; one niece, Edith McSwain; and one nephew, James (Bubba) Harvey.

Mr. Harvey was predeceased by a son, Michael Dean Harvey; and a brother, James Harvey. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jonesville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Gilmer, Rev. Jack Ray, Rev. David Clyburn Jr., Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Hoyt Haney, Boyd Clark, James Guyton, Calvin Payton, Joey Marcello, Bobby Fowler, Evans Crocker and Wayne Sanders. The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: Bill Kerr, Dr. Charles Belue and Gene Henderson. Members of the Men's Sunday School Class of Jonesville United Methodist Church are asked to sit in a group.

The body will be at the Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel where the family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Jonesville United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 787, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The family is at the home, 120 Stehle St., Jonesville. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ray Puckett
Formerly employed with Torrington Co.

BUFFALO - Ray Ervin Puckett, 57, husband of Mary Champion Puckett of 120 Fairforest Heights Extension, Buffalo, died Dec. 5, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Puckett was born in Clinton on May 2, 1945, a son of the late Oliver and Ella Foster Puckett. He was a member of the West Springs Baptist Church and was formerly employed with Torrington Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Kenneth Ray (Kenny) Puckett of Woodruff; a daughter, Wendy G. Puckett of Boiling Springs; four grandchildren, Jeremy Christopher Ivey and Tammy Nicole Ivey both of the home, Matthew Gordon Puckett and Michael Ray Puckett both of Woodruff; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Cheyanne Ivey of Wellford and Autum Skylar Ivey of the home; two sisters, Daisy Ingle and Ella Mae Puckett both of Mississippi; a brother, Oliver Puckett Jr. of Buffalo; two half-sisters, Florence Puckett of Newberry and Minnie Wix of Buffalo and Roy Littlejohn of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at West Springs Baptist Church by Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Ansel Gilliam, Lynn Thornton, Cannon Cohen, Andy Ray, Darrell Puckett, Dean Puckett, Eddie O'Dell, Frank Cathcart, Carol Cathcart, Troy Champion, Troy Brewington, Michael Brewington and Larry O'Shields.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 120 Fairforest Heights Extension, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dessie Louise Fowler Addis, 63, of 119 C Street, Jonesville, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at 10:50 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Addis was born in Union on July 13, 1940, a daughter of the late Herbert and Lillie Mae Horne Fowler. She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and the WMU Miriam Soto Circle, and a former member of the Jonesville High School Band Aide Club. Mrs. Addis was a former licensed cosmetologist and was retired from Conso Products.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Allen Yeargin of Jonesville; a special friend, Hubert Millwood of Jonesville; a granddaughter, Hope Yeargin of Jonesville; and two nieces and two nephews; Trena Morgan, Pam Murphy, Dennis Morgan and Randall Morgan, all of Jonesville. Mrs. Addis was predeceased by a sister, Dot Morgan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Joe Stover.

Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Ernest Millwood, Danny Gregory, Dr. Wells Wood, Danny Yeargin, David Millwood and Michael Yeargin. The family is at the home of her daughter, Regina and Allen Yeargin, 1480 Bobby Faucette Road, Jonesville, and will receive friends at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel tonight from 6:30 until 8:30. Memorials may be made to the Jonesville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 279, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jerry W. Boyd

Jerry Wright Boyd, 73, of 336 Pineneedle Road, Union, widow of James W. Boyd, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at 6:35 a. m. at her residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Boyd was born in Jonesville on March 13, 1930, a daughter of the late Walter and Mary Elizabeth Reece Wright. She was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church. Mrs. Boyd was former owner and operator of Jerry's Sporting Goods.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ray Sanders of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rex and Dona Boyd of Sumter and Jimmy and Cathy Boyd of Chesnee; two sisters, Virginia Hutchins of Florida and Lorene Mastin of North Carolina; a brother, Wesley Wright of California; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Chaplain Skip Snyder.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Wes Boyd, Jerry Boyd, Rex Boyd Jr., Shane Boyd, Bryce Boyd and Houston Boyd. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30. The family is at the home, 336 Pineneedle Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, Suite 300, 120 Heywood Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ruth Davis
Union native

WEST COLUMBIA - Sara (Ruth) Davis, 81, of West Columbia, went to her eternal home on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, after an extended illness. Mrs. Davis, widow of Woodrow W. Davis Jr., was born on Sept. 29, 1922, in Union, the daughter of the late Guy S. and Leila Melissa Gregory Davis. Mrs. Davis was a West Columbia resident and member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She also kept the nursery at Mt. Hebron for over 40 years, until her illness kept her away from her beloved babies.

She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Ruth (Lisa) Davis of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Woodrow W. Jr. and Marie H. Davis of Lexington, S. Wayne and Joyce D. Davis of West Columbia, Roger E. and Linda S. Davis of Columbia; grandchildren, Evan, Jenna, Hayley, Katelyn and Taylor Davis; sisters, Margaret Gowan, Guynell Davis, Thelma Farner, and brother, Marvin Davis, all of Union. She was predeceased by her sister, Mabel Gist, and brothers, Joe, Ken and Bernard Davis. At the time of Mr. Davis death in 2002, they had been married nearly 61 years.

Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church in West Columbia conducted by the Rev. Ken Colton and the Rev. Howard Sweat, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and Lee Pearce. Visitation will be tonight from 5 until 7 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church Building Fund, the American Heart Association, Hospice Care of Tri-County or the charity of one's choice. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington has charge of arrangements.

Donzlee Spears
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Donzlee (Shine) Spears, 70, of 561 Timberlake Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Brookview Health Care Center in Gaffney. A native of Union, he was born Oct. 6, 1933, a son of the late Lewis Spears and Olivia Wright Spears. He attended Union County Public Schools and was retired from Buffalo Mill. He was a member of New Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Dorothy (Lewis) Rice of Union; two sisters-in-law, Annie M. Spears and Mary J. Spears, both of Union. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. James Mason. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Ms. Dorothy Rice, 124 Hillside Drive, Union. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
