WALLACE - Edmond Knight, 82, died Thursday, May 8, 2014. Born in Richmond County, NC he was a son of the late Love and Lilly Greene Knight. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Surviving is a son, Darrell Knight of Wallace, SC, daughters, Chris (Johnny) K. McDonald of Wallace, SC, Reba (Doug) K. Jenkins of Ellerbe, NC, a brother, Lester Brigman of McColl, SC, sisters, Martha Knight, Evelyn Stubbs, Pearl Emanuel and Lorraine English all of Bennettsville, SC, seven children and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, a son, Randy Knight, brothers, Gilbert Knight, James Knight, Thurman Knight, Robert Knight, Ralph Knight and a sister, Hazel K. Barfield.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM, Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Ruth Smith McLeod

MCBEE - Funeral services for Ruth Smith McLeod, 86, were held at 11:00 am Friday, May 16, 2014 at the McBee Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Mark Dickinson officiated with burial in McBee Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. McLeod, widow of John Spaugh McLeod, Sr., died Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Born in McBee, SC, she was a daughter of the late Earl Kirby and Ruby Culley Smith.

She was a lifetime resident of McBee, raised in the McBee Baptist Church and was a member of the McBee Presbyterian Church. A teacher for many years in McBee and Bethune, she enjoyed her students. She was also an artist and a charter member of the Art Alliance of Chesterfield County. She was devoted to the community that she dearly loved.

Surviving are her son, John Spaugh (Micki) McLeod Jr. of Liberty Hill, SC; daughter, Anna (Robert) Weir of McBee, SC; grandchildren, Joanna Ruth Weir, Evan Adelle McLeod, Robert Lee Weir Jr., Melissa Davis, Dayna Weir (Robert) Able, Warren Patrick (Shenica) Weir.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Jennie Smith McLeod.

Memorials may be made to her church.

Brenda Joyce Haithcock Starling

CHERAW - Mrs. Brenda Joyce Haithcock Starling, age 68, died Sunday, May 11, 2014 at her home.

A funeral service was held at 5:00 PM Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Starling was born in Bennettsville, SC a daughter of the late Marvin “Son” Haithcock, Jr. and Margaret Louise Freeman Haithcock. She was a former employee of Cheraw Yarn Mill with 30 years of service. Mrs. Starling was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed spending time with her grandbabies. In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin D. “Buck” Starling; 1 son, Franklin Delnore Starling, Jr.; 1 daughter, Sandra Lynne Atkinson.

Survivors include 2 Sons: Daniel “Buddy” (Audrey Hartley) Franklin Starling of Florence, SC, and Franklin Lee McMasters of Franklinville, NC; 1 Daughter: Brenda Kaye (Timothy) Wallace of Cheraw, SC; 4 Grandchildren: Noelle Starling, Noah Starling, Nathaniel Starling, and Timothy Hickey; 1 Sister: Margie (Charles) Deaver of Wallace, SC.

Eddie B Tucker

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Eddie B Tucker, age 72, died Saturday, May 10, 2014 at his home.

A graveside service was held at 5:00 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 4:30 – 5:00 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2014 prior to the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Tucker was born September 29, 1941 in Morven, NC a son of the late John A and Janie Miles Tucker. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Tucker was a farmer, and was formerly employed with Cuddy Farms as a Mechanic. He enjoyed hog hunting, woodworking, and attending auctions. In addition to his parents, Eddie was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Davis Tucker; 3 brothers, Ike, Charles Dennis, and Robert Ray Tucker; and by 1 sister-in-law, Tonnie Tucker.

Survivors include 1 Son: Eddie B (Becky) Tucker, Jr. of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Daughter: Karen Tucker Short of Ruby, SC; 4 Grandchildren: Kaylan Hope Tucker, Erin Faith Tucker, Rilynn Elizabeth Short, and Lara Gracynn Short; 5 Brothers: Duncan Tucker of Jacksonville, FL, Mac (Pat) Tucker of Ruby, SC, J D Tucker of Morven, NC, Frank (Donna) Tucker of Burnsville, NC, and Steve Phillips of Morven, NC; and 1 Sister-in-law: Martha Ann Tucker of Cheraw, SC.

John Russell McLain

PATRICK - Mr. John Russell McLain, age 86, died Thursday, May 8, 2014. He was born December 9, 1927 in Patrick, SC, a son of the late Oscar Drew and Rosa Lee Boan McLain. He was a 1944 graduate of Chesterfield High School and received his BS degree from Clemson University. Mr. McLain attended USC and received his CPCU degree from Georgia State. John founded McLain Insurance Agency in 1964 and was owner until his retirement in 1982. He was a retired insurance agent, farmer, and was a former school teacher. Mr. McLain was a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran, former Scout Master, and a former member of the SC House of Representatives. John was a founding member of the Chesterfield County Library Board and a charter member of Green River Country Club. He was a former member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and a current member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church, and had taught Sunday school for 54 years. In addition to his parents, John was also preceded in death by a brother Gilbert McLain.

Mr. McLain is survived by his wife of 64 years, Suellyn Childress McLain of the home; two sons, Johnny (Debbie) McLain and Jim (Sandy) McLain both of Chesterfield, SC; two daughters, Marsha (Dr. Chuck) Clark of Chesterfield, SC, and Becky Rippy of Blacksburg, SC; also 15 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren; one sister, Novella (Rev. Ralph) Jacobs of Chesterfield, SC; sisters-in-law, Ruth W. McLain of Chesterfield, SC and Frankie Childress of Atlanta, GA.; brothers-in-law, William Harold (Martha) Childress of Anderson, SC and Hugh (Delores) Childress of Atlanta, GA; Uncle, Harold P. (Helen) McLain of Patrick, SC; and Aunt, Ola McLain of Patrick, SC

Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in the St. John Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received family and friends 3:00 – 4:00 PM, Saturday, May 10, 2014 prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Betty Davis Evans, age 81, died Friday, April 25, 2014.

A graveside service was held at 3:00 PM Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Evans-Spencer-Robeson Cemetery.

Mrs. Evans was born May 25, 1932 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Clyde Eugene and Nina Evans Davis. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and was a retired nurse. In addition to her parents, Betty was also preceded in death by her husband, Trippett Carlisle Evans.

Survivors include 1 Son: Alan (Barbara) Davis of York, SC; 4 Granddaughters: Emily Davis (Daniel) Fishman, Sarah Anne Davis and fiancé, Christopher Goss, Nina Davis (Ryan) Morrison, and Betty Jean (Daniel) Good; Also: 6 Great Grandchildren; 1 Brother: Clyde E. “Buster” Davis of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Sisters: Sarah D. Polson of Cheraw, SC and Ann D. (Bob) Bellamy of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Bobby Lewis Sweatt

WALLACE - Bobby Lewis Sweatt, 61, died Monday, April 28, 2014. Born in Bennettsville, SC he was the a son of Mary Elizabeth Hinson Sweatt of Wallace, SC and the late Lewis Sweatt. He was a member of White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. He enjoyed fishing and reading the Bible.

Surviving is his wife Mary Magaline Butler Sweatt of Wallace, SC, his mother listed above, a sister, Karen Sweatt Odom of Cheraw, SC, a niece, Stacey Sweatt Jones, nephews, Brent Sweatt and Alessandro Martini.

He was preceded in death by his father listed above and a brother, Stanley Sweatt.

The family received friends 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC.

A funeral service was held 4:00 PM, Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Wilson Clinton Burr

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Wilson Clinton Burr, age 64, died Saturday, April 19, 2014.

A graveside service was held at 5:00 P.M. Monday, April 21, 2014 at Douglass Mill Cemetery.

Visitation was from 4:00 – 5:00 P.M. Monday, April 21, 2014 prior to the graveside service at Douglas Mill Baptist Church.

Mr. Burr was born May 31, 1949, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Lloyd Clinton and Frances Deese Burr. He was a 1967 graduate of Chesterfield High School and was a retired timber buyer with Canal Wood and was also a former employee of Lynches River Electric Co-op. Wilson was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed wood crafting and restoring all kinds of things.

Survivors include Wife: Janice Therrell-Burr of the home; Son: Ricky Burr of Chesterfield, SC

Step Daughter: Brandy (Jason) Crowley of Patrick, SC; Brother: Lloyd F. (Linnett) Burr of Ruby, SC; Grandchildren: Brianna Lee, Skylar Lee, and Ayden Crowley; and Great Granchildren: Braylan and McKenlee Hannah.

Gerald Ray Chapman, Sr.

May 28, 1926– April 19, 2014

Gerald Ray Chapman, Sr., was born May 28, 1926, in the Cash Community of Chesterfield County outside of Cheraw, South Carolina. His parents are the late James Thomas Chapman and Janie Culp Chapman. His grandparents are the late James Dewitt Chapman and Madora Louise Powe Chapman and the late Joseph Culp and Elizabeth Brown Culp who was a member of the Catawba Indian Nation.

In addition to his parents and grandparents listed above, Mr. Chapman was predeceased by his brothers John Clifton Chapman (died September 1988); Willie Russell “Ruck” Chapman (died 1978); Thomas J. Chapman (died March 1917); Rufus Julian Chapman (died March 1917); James Thomas “Hammet” Chapman (died February 1989); David Walker “Ben” Chapman, Sr. (died July 1990); and sisters Marguerette Madora “Soot” C. Burr (died April 1990) and Janie Lucille C. Floyd (died January 1989).

Having grown up during the Great Depression, Mr. Chapman, who was affectionately called “Bum” by his Chapman relatives, knew and appreciated the value of hard work and having a paying job. After proudly serving his country in the U. S. Navy trained as a tail gunner during World War II, Mr. Chapman worked for Egmont, J. P Stevens, Pee Dee Fabrics, and Crown, Cork and Seal. He last worked at the Cheraw Recycling Center retiring two years ago at age 85 so that he could help with the care of his wife who has Alzheimer’s disease. Until recently, Mr. Chapman was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Chapman was a colorful, enthralling storyteller and enjoyed entertaining family and others by recanting incidents from his life, particularly from his youth. A collector of everything, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure was Mr. Chapman’s motto. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-nine (69) years, Wilma Louise Wallace Chapman.

Daughters: LaJoyce C. Chapman and her husband Ralph W. Chapman, Sr., of Patrick, SC; Rebecca C. Gainey and her husband Melvin Gainey of Cheraw, SC

Grandchildren: Ralph Wilson Chapman, Jr., and his wife Katy Turner Chapman of Cheraw, SC; John Tyson Chapman and his wife Shannon McNally Chapman of Frisco, TX; Shelley C. Morgan and her husband David L. Morgan of Cheraw, SC; Amy C. Alexander and her husband Jon P. Alexander of Cheraw, SC

Great grandchildren: Zackary Kyle and Ashley Brenn Chapman, of Cheraw, SC; Delaney Kathryn, Jacob Thomas and Brody Wallace Chapman of Frisco, TX.; Jon Matheson, Charles Thomas, Lily Cathryn and Jackson Caulder Alexander of Cheraw, SC;

His beloved cats Fluffy and Mackie. Also the many close and extended members of the Chapman and Wallace families.

Funeral Services for Mr. Gerald Ray Chapman were 11:00 AM Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jerry and Sherrie Chapman, 330 Chewning Road, Cheraw, SC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 4124 Clemson Boulevard, Suite L, Anderson, SC 29621.

Barbara Hill Funderburk

PAGELAND - Mrs. Barbara Hill Funderburk, age 84, died Friday, April 18, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Monday, April 21, 2014 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Funderburk was born April 24, 1929, in Camden, SC, a daughter of the late Luther Ellie and Leola Eva Marshall Hill. She was a graduate of Pageland High School and was a retired bank teller with First Citizens Bank. Mrs. Funderburk was a faithful member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church for many years, where she served as former pianist, organist, choir member, church clerk, and Sunday school teacher. Barbara enjoyed growing flowers, sewing, quilting, making crafts, and playing the piano. In addition to her parents, Barbara was also preceded in death by her husband, Archie L. Funderburk, her son-in-law, James B. “Pete” Mills, her brother, Don D. Hill, and by her sisters, Miriam H. Ammons and Carolyn H. Smith.

Survivors include 1 Son: Philip L. (Vonda) Funderburk of Hamptonville, NC; 1Daughter: Phylis F. Mills of Pageland, SC; and Grandchildren: Jenna Mills (Travis) Johnson, Bevan (Lucille) Funderburk, and Jason (Jen) Funderburk.
