Thornwell Forrest Sowell Jr.

CHESTERFIELD - Thornwell Forrest Sowell, Jr., 87, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his home. He was the husband of Margaret Tart Sowell.

T. F. was born May 30, 1926, in Chesterfield, SC, the son of the late Thornwell Forrest Sowell, Sr. and Mary Sudie Burch Sowell. He graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1943. While in high school, T.F. attended the first Palmetto Boys’ State held at Camp Jackson in 1940 in Columbia, S.C. He attended Clemson University, left there to serve in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, and returned to Clemson to graduate with a B.A. degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1949. He returned home to his family farm and served as Manager of Calvin Rivers Farms.

T. F. was a member of the S.C. Farm Bureau, the S.C. State Tobacco Commission, and the S.C. State Conservation Commission; in addition, his family was the recipient of the Chesterfield County Farm Family-of-the-Year Award. He served on the Chesterfield Town Council and the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee and Chairman of the Finance Committee. T.F. was also a founding member of Green River Country Club and served on the Board of Directors.

T.F. is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Thornwell F. (Jan) Sowell III; daughter, Amy Sowell (James) Braswell; son, Marshall L. (Betty) Sowell; and daughter, Mary Margaret Sowell (Scott) Rosenbloom. His grandchildren are Christy Braswell, Carson Sowell (Ashley) Twombley, Jessica Braswell, Jill Sowell, Evan (Jennifer) Sowell, Ben Mosrie, and Ella Mosrie. Great-grandchildren are Mac and Will Twombley, Mattison Braswell, and EJ Sowell. His sister is Mary Sue (Marion) DuRant of Titusville, FL.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 21, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 West Main Street, Chesterfield. Immediately following the service were a reception and visitation at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church or Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Francis “Sonny” Harold Turner

CHERAW - Francis “Sonny” Harold Turner, 70, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014. Born in Laurinburg, NC he was a son of the late George B. and Frances Odom Turner. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. In his younger days he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a Clemson and Carolina Fan.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Vance Turner of Cheraw, SC, sons Jon Marcus Turner and wife Helena of Easley, SC, James Coleman Curry, III and wife Kristy of Augusta, GA, daughters, Jill L. Turner and partner Jamie of Lexington, SC, Jackie Curry Wilson and husband Brian of Columbia, SC, grandchildren, James Coleman “Cole” Curry, IV, Lily Ingram Turner, Kadence Lizzie Curry, Benjamin Stone Turner, Samuel Vance Wilson, and Easton Odom Turner.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and brothers, Nicky Odom Turner and George Turner.

The family will receive friends 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Annie Sue Gulledge Hurst

MORVEN, N.C. - Mrs. Hurst, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, March 15, 2014 after a courageous battle with a series of illnesses. She was born on September 21, 1924, the youngest daughter of Annie Lee Ratliff and James Arthur Gulledge. She was a loving and much loved and adored wife, mother, and grandmother. She was affectionately known as “Meme” by her grandchildren, and she never missed the opportunity to say to her family and friends “Love You Guys”.

Mrs. Hurst graduated from Chesterfield High School, North Greenville Junior College (now North Greenville University), and Winthrop College (now Winthrop University). In addition, she completed post-graduate studies at Coker College and Winthrop. She was a second-grade teacher for 31 years, the majority of her tenure spent in the Rock Hill School District #3 system. She served on the South Carolina Language Arts Curriculum Committee and was a former “Teacher of the Year”. She loved reading and always had a book close at hand, a love that she enthusiastically passed on to her many students, her children, and her grandchildren. Additionally, she avidly followed ACC basketball and was always cheering on her favorite Duke Blue Devils.

Mrs. Hurst was a devoted Christian with a strong and abiding faith. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, SC and derived great joy as a member of the Wesley Fellowship Class and the “Lunch Bunch”.

Mrs. Hurst was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-one years, Alvin Dewain Hurst, Sr.; her brothers, James Arthur Gulledge, Jr., William Preston Gulledge, Joe Ratliff Gulledge; and her sisters, Evelyn Gulledge Steele and Frances Gulledge Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Susanne Hurst McGuire, and husband William Bulgin McGuire, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; son, Alvin Dewain Hurst, Jr., and wife Anna Young Hurst of Morven, NC; grandchildren, Caroline Robinson McGuire of Charlotte, NC; William Hurst McGuire of Washington, District of Columbia; Molly Lauer McGuire of Charlotte, NC; two special cousins, John Preston Ratliff and Sarah Ratliff Faulkner, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Sue Gulledge Hurst will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at 2:00 PM at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chesterfield, SC. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Interment will be private at the Ratliff Family Cemetery at New Hope United Methodist Church, Casons Old Field, NC.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ted Thompson of CMC Main, the staff and friends of White Oak Manor of Waxhaw, Hospice of Union County, and Visiting Angels. Their many kindnesses are most appreciated.

Glenn Gardner White

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Glenn Gardner White, age 76, died Friday, March 14, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M. Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. White was born April 23, 1937 in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late William Forrest White and Eva Jeanette Gardner White. He was a former building contractor and retired owner and operator of White’s Carpet. Glenn was a former member of the SC National Guard and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. Glenn enjoyed fishing, quail hunting, mowing grass, and building construction. In addition to his parents, Glenn was also preceded in death by his wife, Delite Perdue White, 3 brothers, Baxter, Jack, and Gerald White, and by a sister Sarah Rice.

Survivors include 4 Sons: Rev. Glenn Scott (Jennifer) White, Stewart (Dawn) White both of Chesterfield, SC, Jeff White of Cheraw, SC, and William Forrest White of Chesterfield, SC

8 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren; 1 Sister: Carolyn W. (James) Blackwell of McBee, SC.

Memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church “Youth Group” 3154 Hwy. 102, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

William Randal 'Randy Lee' Hancock

FLORENCE - Mr. William Randal “Randy Lee” Hancock, age 53, died Thursday, March 6, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Hancock was born August 8, 1960 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Brooks Franklin and Willie Faye King Hancock He was a 1978 graduate of Chesterfield High School and a former textile employee. Randy was a former member of the Chesterfield Rescue Squad. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include Spouse: Catherine Ann DaVide of the home; 2 Sons: William Randal Hancock Jr. and Brandon Nathaniel Hancock; Stepchildren: Jeannie (Mark) Rivera, John (Rachel) DaVide, Joseph (Sophia) DaVide, Daniel (Heather) DaVide, and Bekim (Rachel) Elmazi; Also 6 Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Otto (Trudy) Hancock and Ernie (Kathy) Hancock both of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Sister: Cheryl H. Douglass of Cheraw, SC; Also Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.

Frank L. Ponce

RUBY - CSM Frank L. Ponce, age 80, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with military honors followed in the Hurst Cemetery.

Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Saturday, prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Ponce was born December 17, 1933 in Porterville, CA a son of the late Frank Joe Ponce and Hazel Serofina Martinez Ponce. He was a retired Command Sergeant Major in the US Army 509th Airborne Combat Battalion with 27 years of service. Mr. Ponce served during the Korean War, Dominican Republic War of Independence, and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Green Berets, and was a master parachutist. Frank received many awards, including the Legion of Merit, Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star Medal, U.S. Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (8 awards), United Nations Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and many other medals and awards. Mr. Ponce also was a retired manager with Carolina Canners. He was a sports enthusiast, and especially enjoyed golf and boxing, and was an antique dealer. In addition to his parents, Frank was also preceded in death by his wife, Lexie Joe Sellers Ponce; and by his brothers, Ervin Frank Ponce, Christopher Frank Ponce, Roy Johns, and Glen Ponce.

Survivors include Children: Frankie Joe (Marlene) Ponce of Ruby, SC, Lexia J. (Jeff) Zungali of Johnstown, PA, Anthony R. (Robert Lawrence) Ponce of Albuquerque, NM, and Joy P. (Brian) Huntley of Chesterfield, SC; Grandchildren: Ricardo Alfonso Aguilar, Frank Carlos Aguilar, Frank Anthony Ponce, Brian Jay Ponce, Anthony Tyler Zungali, Joy Lexia Ponce, and John Andrew Huntley; and Great Grandchildren: Gabriel, Frank, and Selina Aguilar.

Edith Claudine Sergent

CHERAW - Edith Claudine Sergent, 89, died Friday, February 28, 2014. Born in Concord, NC she was a daughter of the late Evans G. Hargett Sr. and Rosa Gertrude Layton Hargett and the widow of Don Sergent.

Surviving are her brother, Evans G. Hargett, Jr., a sister, Mable Talbert both of Concord, NC and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, brothers, Eugene Hargett, Arlen Hargett, Wade Hargett, sisters, Mary Ellen Brown and Burley Boyd.

A memorial service was held 4:00 PM, Friday, March 7, 2014 at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Concord, NC.

Lona Mae Woodward

RUBY - Mrs. Lona Mae Woodward, age 90, went home to be with her Lord, on Monday, March 3, 2014 at her home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Fairview Baptist Church.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mrs. Woodward was born October 21, 1923 in Taylorsville, NC the daughter of the late Elmore Bowles and Daisy Goforth Bowles. She was a former seamstress and farmer, and enjoyed working in her greenhouse. Lona Mae was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church for some 70 years, where she was a choir member, and taught Sunday school for over 35 years. She had a very deep and abiding faith in her Lord, and she touched many lives with her wisdom and calm spirit. Lona Mae loved reading the Bible and read it through yearly. Her life was simple; her family, her faith, her garden, and her flowers. In addition to her parents, Lona Mae was also preceded in death by two daughters; Geraldine W. Gulledge and Patricia W. Oliver, and by her brothers; Ronald and Guy Bowles.

Survivors include Husband of 71 years: Eugene Woodward of the home; 2 Daughters: Linda Davis of Darlington, SC and Julie W. (Ernie) Cooper of Winnsboro, SC; 5 grandchildren: Wesley Gulledge, Michael Gulledge, Michelle Quick, Matthew Roper, and Alicia Watts.

Also 4 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great, Great Grandchildren; and A special Niece and caregiver Paula Wise of Ruby, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Nell Haire Yearty

MONCKS CORNER - Mrs. Nell Haire Yearty, 79, of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, beloved wife, mother, and sister, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Milton Yearty, son Mark Yearty and his wife Sherry, sister Dell Davis and her husband Gerald, niece Cheryl Corn and her husband Richard, nephew Lain Davis and his wife Cheryl, and grand-niece Sarah Davis. Mrs. Yearty was preceeded in death by her parents J. Frank Haire and Susie Pearce Haire.

The funeral was held Friday, March 7, 2014, 2:00 p.m., at St. John's Baptist Church in Pinopolis, South Carolina. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, 684 Broughton Road, Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Arrangements are by Dial-Murray Funeral Home, 300 West Main Street, Moncks Corner, (843) 761-8027.

Mrs. Yearty was born in Cordele, Georgia. She later moved with her husband and son to Cheraw, South Carolina where she was a faithful member of North Cheraw Baptist Church. She retired from Northeastern Technical College of Cheraw. Recently, she relocated to Moncks Corner with her husband to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She is a faithful attendee of St. John’s Baptist Church of Pinopolis. Mrs. Yearty loved God, her family, and nature. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading, and she frequently talked about Jesus’ return.

Mary G. Davidson

GREER - Mary Elizabeth Gulledge Davidson, 99, widow of Robert Wilson Davidson, died February 24, 2014 at The Cottages at Brushy Creek.

A native of Chesterfield, daughter of the late James Wesley and Mary Charlotte Greene Gulledge, she was a retired employee of M. Lowenstein Corporation and a member of East Rockingham Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Kitty Howell of Taylors; two grandchildren, Kary H. and husband Rex Galloway and David B. and wife Angie Howell and four great-grandchildren, Logan Galloway, Lacy Galloway, Will Howell and Katherine Howell.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wood Mortuary conducted by Rev. David Howell and Rev. Ralph May. Burial was at 4:00 p.m. in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, S.C.

Visitation was held 9:30-10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Wood Mortuary.

The family is at the home of the daughter, Kitty Howell, 16 Randy Drive, Taylors, S.C. 29687.

Cody Brandon Deese

PAGELAND - Mr. Cody Brandon Deese, age 25, died Saturday, February 22, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Center Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday, February 24, 2014 at the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Deese was born December 17, 1988, in Monroe, NC, a son of Phillip Douglas “Dougie” Deese and Doris Ann Sikes Deese. He attended Central High School, where he played football, and was a former employee of Carolina Climate Control. Cody enjoyed playing football, corn hole, and video games. He also loved music, swimming, fishing, and riding 4 Wheelers. Cody was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Cleveland Deese and Charles Sikes.

Survivors include Parents: Dougie and Doris Ann Deese of Pageland, SC; Sister: Raven Deese of Pageland, SC; Grandmothers: Glendora Deese and Peggy Sikes of Pageland, SC; Nephew: Wyatt Daylan Langley of Pageland, SC; Aunts: Lorie Deese Melton, Gail Deese, Linda Rivers, and Angie Sikes; Uncles: Charles Deese and Edward Sikes; Cousins: Jessica Deese Adams, Clint Adams, Josh and Kelly Miles, Justin and Brittany Melton, Laken and Clay Sikes, Bailey Adams, Brookyn Miles and Addison Miles.
