The Rev. Dr. Joe Jasper Bridges, 77, husband of Sara Melissa Patterson Bridges of 1108 Arthur Blvd., Union, died Friday Dec. 5, 2003, at his home after a long illness. Dr. Bridges was born in Shelby, N.C., Sept. 20, 1926, a son of the late Lawrence Coleman and Marlin Jenkins Bridges. He attended Gardner-Webb College and was a graduate of Limestone College. Dr. Bridges received his Masters of Divinity at the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans and his Doctorate of Pastoral Studies from the Luther Rice Seminary.
Dr. Bridges pastored Baptist churches in Stapleton, Ala., Buffalo Baptist Church in Cherokee County, Race Path Baptist Church in Ellenboro, N.C., Friendship Baptist and Peach Valley Baptist in Spartanburg. Dr. Bridges also pastored Mon-Aetna Baptist Church in Union for 24 years, and Tabernacle Baptist of Union on two separate occasions along with Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church of Union and Hebron Baptist of Union.
Dr. Bridges was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Joann Melissa and John Parris of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, William Lawrence and Laura Bridges of Jacksonville, Fla.,; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Alice Sanders of Union; a brother, John Bridges of Mooresboro, N.C.; and two grandsons, William Seaton Bridges and Spencer Garlington Bridges of Jacksonville, Fla.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Tabernacle Baptist Church by the Rev. Barry Ellis, the Rev. Benny Green, Mr. Charley Hughes and the Rev. Grady Ghent. Burial was in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were the deacons of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
The following formed the honorary escort: Deacons of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and pastors of the Union County Baptist Association. Memorials may be made to the Tabernacle Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379 or to the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 1108 Arthur Blvd., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
JaBrian Dawkins
JaBrian (Doowop) Dawkins, 5, son of Brian Dawkins and Twona Smith, of 405-A Porter St., died at his home Dec. 4, 2003. A student in the 4-year-old kindergarten at Foster Park Elementary School, he was a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Brian Dawkins Jr. and Brandon Dawkins, both of Union; three sisters, Kingsley Dawkins, Tykeria Dawkins and Tanygha Dawkins, all of Union. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Maple Ridge Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. K. Sadler. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday at the Union Community Funeral Home. The family will be at 405-A Porter and 204 Tillman streets in Union. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Terry W. Gibson
Ret. S/Sgt/ Terry Wayne Gibson, 55, of 709 Rice Avenue Ext. , died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Gibson was born Oct. 13, 1948, in Gaffney, a son of Mr. C. L. Gibson of Pacolet and the late Juanita Knox Gibson. He was a former postal employee and had retired from the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War. Mr. Gibson was a member of Burnsview Baptist Church of Greer.
Surviving in addition to his father are three sons, Rodney Hope Gibson of New Jersey, T. Duane and Heather Gibson and Dean and Christie Gibson, all of Union; a step-son, Quinton Scott Liong, who is currently stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army; two sisters, Evelyn Rector of Pacolet and Shirley Willingham of Gaffney; and three step-daughters, Kassidy Chaney of Union and Cheyenne Liong-Mills and Noriah Liong, both of Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Huckaby. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home of his son, Dean and Christie Gibson, 134 Catawba Hill Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James H. Greene
James H. Greene, 91, of 63 Blackstock Road, Inman, formerly of 411 Kelly Road, Union, husband of Mary C. Greene, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 2:34 a.m. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Evelyn W. Brank
Evelyn Wilson Brank, 78, wife of Harold S. Brank of 2649 Jonesville Lockhart Highway, died Dec. 6, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Brank was born in Campobello on Sept. 24, 1924, a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Mamie Denton Wilson. She was retired from Milliken and Co., Lockhart Plant and was a graduate of Lockhart High School.
Mrs. Brank was a member of the Lockhart United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Group of the Church. She was also a member of Lockhart Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Brank was first married to the late James Fletcher.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Jean Carter of Lockhart; one step-son, David Fletcher of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Edwin Wilson of Lockhart; five grandchildren, Robin Black, Todd Carter, Heather Colson, Wendy Duncan and Jamie Duncan; three great-grandchildren; a special niece, Judy Evans of Buffalo; and a number of other nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Brank was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Liner; a brother, Joe Ray Wilson; and two step-sons, Danny and Jimmy Fletcher. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Lockhart United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alan Quarles and Rev. Ben Hill. Burial was in Lockhart Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Eddie Wilson, Jason Colson, Kevin Black, Tuie Wentz, Eddie Farmer and Jack Webber. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday night from 7-8 and was placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.
Memorials may be made to Lockhart United Methodist Church, Lockhart, SC 29364. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lucille S. Comer
Sarah Lucille Stepp Comer, 78, of 2034 Jonesville Highway, widow of Bill Comer, died Dec. 8, 2002, at 2:20 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Comer was born in Union on April 23, 1924, a daughter of the late Geter D. and Mittie Moseley Stepp. She was a member of the New Life Baptist Church. Mrs. Comer was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Conso Products.
Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia C. Smith of Union; two sons, Wayne Comer and Donald Comer both of Union; two sisters, Sue S. Fowler of Marion, N.C.; and Grace S. Lane of Union; two brothers, Joe T. Stepp of Jonesville and Vernon Stepp of Lockhart; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7-9. The family is at the home, 2034 Jonesville Highway. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Thomas C. Edwards Sr.
Thomas Clyde Edwards Sr., 98, widower of Corine Estes Edwards, of 106 Catherine St., died Dec. 8, 2002, at 9:59 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Edwards was born in Union on Sept. 9, 1904, a son of the late William Thomas and Bernice Humphries Edwards.
He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Edwards was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and following his retirement, Mr. Edwards worked with his nephew, Paul S. Greer at Greer's Shell and Wrecker Service. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are a son, Tom C. Edwards Jr. and his wife Mary Mack Edwards of Greenville; a sister-in-law with whom he made his home, Elizabeth C. Estes of Union; and two grandchildren, Thomas Ryan Edwards of Charleston and Ann Spears Mercer of Greenville. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Cemetery by the Rev. Clay Howerton.
The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Larry Estes, Johnny Estes, Billy Estes, Paul Greer II, Steve Wilson, Frank James and Dan Vaughan. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the home, 106 Catherine St., Union. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Ray Puckett
BUFFALO - Ray Ervin Puckett, 57, husband of Mary Champion Puckett of 120 Fairforest Heights Extension, Buffalo, died Dec. 5, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Med-ical Center. Mr. Puckett was born in Clinton on May 2, 1945, a son of the late Oliver and Ella Foster Puckett. He was a member of the West Springs Baptist Church and was formerly employed with Torrington Company.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Kenneth Ray (Kenny) Puckett of Woodruff; a daughter, Wendy G. Puckett of Boiling Springs; four grandchildren, Jeremy Christopher Ivey and Tammy Nicole Ivey both of the home, Matthew Gordon Puckett and Michael Ray Puckett both of Woodruff; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Cheyanne Ivey of Wellford and Autum Skylar Ivey of the home; two sisters, Daisy Ingle and Ella Mae Puckett both of Mississippi; a brother, Oliver Puckett Jr. of Buffalo; two half-sisters, Florence Puckett of Newberry and Minnie Wix of Buffalo; three half-brothers, Cliff Littlejohn and Frank Littlejohn both of Buffalo and Roy Littlejohn of Jonesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at West Springs Baptist Church by Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Craig Lancaster, Allen Lancaster, Joseph Lancaster, Robbie Gregory, Brian Gregory and Craig Price.
The following were asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Ansel Gilliam, Lynn Thornton, Cannon Cohen, Andy Ray, Darrell Puckett, Dean Puckett, Eddie O'Dell, Frank Cathcart, Carol Cathcart, Troy Champion, Troy Brewington, Michael Brewington, Larry O'Shields, Joey Lawson and Mark Lawson.
The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday night from 7-9 and was placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Ruth Davis Union native
WEST COLUMBIA - Sarah (Ruth) Davis, 81, of West Columbia, went to her eternal home on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, after an extended illness. Mrs. Davis, widow of Woodrow W. Davis Sr., was born on Sept. 29, 1922, in Union, the daughter of the late Guy S. and Leila Melissa Gregory Davis. Mrs. Davis was a West Columbia resident and member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She also kept the nursery at Mt. Hebron for over 40 years, until her illness kept her away from her beloved babies.
She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Ruth (Lisa) Davis of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Woodrow W. Jr. and Marie H. Davis of Lexington, S. Wayne and Joyce C. Davis of West Columbia, Roger E. and Linda S. Davis of Columbia; grandchildren, Mark, Tim, Stan, Jody, Scott, Vicky Davis and Julie D. Pearce; great-grandchildren, Evan, Jenna, Hayley, Katelyn and Taylor Davis; sisters, Margaret Gowan, Guynell Davis, Thelma Farner; and brother, Marvin Davis, all of Union.
She was predeceased by her sister, Mabel Gist, and brothers, Joe, Ken and Bernard Davis. At the time of Mr. Davis death in 2002, they had been married nearly 61 years. Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church in West Columbia conducted by the Rev. Ken Colton and the Rev. Howard Sweat. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons and Lee Pearce. Visitation was Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church Building Fund, the American Heart Association, Hospice Care of Tri-County or the charity of one's choice. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington had charge of arrangements.
