WADESBORO – Mrs. Vera Brady Meadows, 90, died peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Anson Health and Rehab with her family by her side.
A service to celebrate her long life was held at 1:00 PM Saturday in the Morven United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry King and Rev. Ronnie Sullivan officiating. The family greeted friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
The oldest of six children, Vera was born in Randolph County on May 28, 1924. She was a daughter of the late Moses Lee Brady and Hazel Edwards Brady Love. Vera grew up in the Greensboro area and enjoyed a very happy childhood filled with great relatives, fun neighbors, and wonderful friends. Her grandmother was particularly influential in her early life and Vera always enjoyed the times spent with “Grandma.” As the oldest child, she was frequently called on to “mother” her younger siblings. As the baby of the family, Jimmy benefited most from his sister’s attention and has never forgotten the affection she showered on him. Following graduation from Rankin High School, she completed her Associate Degree in Business and, in addition to raising her daughter, she enjoyed working at a number of jobs that included selling real estate on the Grand Strand for Fitzgerald Realty, a stint with the Myrtle Beach Journal newspaper, the Cheraw Chamber of Commerce and Ella Memorial Baptist Church in Greensboro. Vera was proudly a longtime member of the Rose Chapter #178 Order of the Eastern Star in Greensboro.
On September 20, 1947, she married Ernest S. Meadows and together they enjoyed 29 wonderful years before his death in 1976. In 1959, the family relocated to Cheraw, SC where Vera joined the First United Methodist Church. When she realized there was no local Brownie or Girl Scout troop, she promptly organized one for the benefit of young girls in the community. Vera also had a great love for music. She enjoyed playing the piano, the guitar and singing – mostly for herself although she did sing in the church choir in Cheraw. Vera was a terrific wife, mother, and community volunteer working hard at serving her family and neighbors with great love and enthusiasm in everything she did.
Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie M. Huntley (Tookie) of Wadesboro; two brothers, Jimmy Brady (Barbara) of Greensboro; Lairron Ritter (Marine) of Greensboro; and a sister-in-law, Louise Brady of Kernersville; step-grandchild, Buck Huntley (Jennifer); 5 step-great-grandchildren, Taylor, Christian, Marisa, Kiera and Leeland..
