James Little Sr.

CHERAW - James Little, Senior, was born in Richmond County, North Carolina, on September 14, 1923, to Bessie Little and Jerry Pegues. He departed this life on Friday, February 20, 2015, at a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Hebron A.M.E. Zion Church in Cheraw. Reid''s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

James was educated at Coulter Memorial Academy (CMA) in Cheraw and was a Charter Member of the CMA National Alumni Association. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II touring in France, England, Belgium and Germany.

After his military service, he was employed at J.P. Stevens for over 30 years; he later worked and retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he received the Special Achievement Award in recognition of notable performance. Upon retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at the local Wal-Mart. James also served as chaplain of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars.

James married Katie Marie Kendall on December 25, 1947, and they celebrated 65 years of matrimony prior to her death. The couple had five children, one of whom preceded them both in death, James Little, Jr.

James was a devout Christian and a member of Mount Hebron A.M.E. Zion Church in Cheraw where he faithfully served as church treasurer and chairman of the Trustee Board. As church treasurer, he was recognized for his devoted services. He was a member of the men’s choir, and continued to serve at Mt. Hebron until his health failed. A dedicated father and husband, James especially enjoyed family gatherings, traveling, the sport of football, listening to gospel music, and walking in the park.

Left to cherish memories are four children: Ronald Little of Cheraw; Donald (Mary) Little, Sumter, SC; Pamela Little (Bernard) McDaniel, Florence, SC ; John (Melisa) Little, Cheraw and daughter-in-law Vivian G. Little of Orangeburg; nine grandchildren, Constance (Robert) Christian of McKenny, Texas; Quin (Vern) Richardson, Goldsboro, North Carolina; Jay Z. (Jennifer) Little, Columbia, SC; Saman Tripin, San Marcos, Texas; James (Ashli) Little, III, Fort Myers, Florida; Dante’ Little, Columbia, SC; Katherine White, Rock Hill, SC; Bernard McDaniel, Jr., Charleston, SC and Kendall Little, Cheraw; nine great-grandchildren other relatives and friends.

Bradley Garrett Morris

CHERAW - Mr. Bradley Garrett Morris, age 61, went home to be with his Lord, Friday, February 27, 2015 at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Monday, March 2, 2015 at Cheraw Family Worship Center. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Morris was born June 16, 1953 in Hartsville, SC, a son of Bradley Lawrence Morris and the late Ivy Hill Morris. He was a graduate of McBee High School and was a retired employee of INA USA. Mr. Morris was a member of Cheraw Family Worship Center. Garrett was a NASCAR fan, loved the mountains, and enjoyed building construction. In addition to his mother, Garrett was also preceded in death by a sister Teresa Powell.

Survivors include Wife: Debbie Quick Morris of the home; 2 Sons: Andrew (Nicole) Morris of Columbus, NC and Brandon Morris of Cheraw, SC; Daughter: Brook (Jamie) Norris of Cheraw, SC; Father: Bradley Lawrence Morris of McBee, SC; 6 Grandchildren: Anna, Evan, and Raeleigh Norris, and McKenna, Mason, and Madelyn Morris; 2 Sisters: Gloria (Fred) Seale of Florence, SC and Rhonda (Randy) Tiller of McBee, SC; and Brother-in-law: William Powell of Florence, SC.

Vernon Edward 'Ed' Garris

CHERAW - Mr. Vernon Edward “Ed” Garris, age 71, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 7, 2015.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Westside Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Interment followed in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

Visitation was from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, February 9, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Garris was born March 19, 1943 in Hartsville, SC, a son of the late William Franklin and Eva Mae Tice Garris. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and attended Chesterfield-Marlboro TEC. Ed was a retired purchasing agent with Becker Sand and Gravel Company and a former member of the SC Army National Guard. He was a faithful member of Westside Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and was a member of the Westside Cooks. Ed also served as former Youth Leader, Treasurer, Choir member, and Trustee. He was also a Mason. Ed was a Husband and Daddy extraordinaire, a special Brother and Uncle, and a true friend to all who knew him. He was also a master pound cake baker, a Granddaddy to many, and will always be remembered for his Donald Duck impersonations. In addition to his parents, Ed was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Garris, Jr., Bennett Garris, and Jimmy Garris.

Survivors include Wife: Barbara Board Garris of the home; 1 Son: Eric Harden (Summer) Garris of Magnolia KY; 1 Daughter: Ellen Josephine (Cindy) Caldwell of Fort Mill, SC; 3 Grandchildren: Storm Caldwell, Sage Edward Garris, and Josie Rayne Garris; 1 Brother: Ray Garris of Wallace, SC; 2 Sisters: Ruby Brigman and Shirley Chapman both of Cheraw, SC

Sister-in-law: Lorraine Garris of Wallace, SC; and Brother-in-law: Richard (Betty) Board of Cheraw, SC.

Richard Wayne Hinson

JEFFERSON - Mr. Richard Wayne Hinson, age 62, died Thursday, February 12, 2015 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, February 13, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church.

Mr. Hinson was born September 17, 1952 in Monroe, NC a son of Ruth Plyler Hinson and the late Joseph Thomas Hinson. He was a carpenter and a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church. Richard was a Mason and a member of Macedonia Masonic Lodge # 239. He enjoyed hunting, singing, and listening to gospel music. Richard also enjoyed talking with his friends and was a true people person. In addition to his father, Richard was also preceded in death by a brother Bobby K. Hinson.

Survivors include Wife: Jean Avery Hinson of the home; Mother: Ruth Plyler Hinson of Jefferson, SC; 2 Brothers: Joseph Thomas Hinson, Jr. of Fountain Inn, SC and Lawson E. Hinson of Myrtle Beach, SC; 2 Sisters: Sally H. Adams of Jefferson, SC and Wanda H. Neff of Monroe, NC; 2 Uncles: Rev. Jackie Hinson of McBee, SC and Jimmy Price of Rock Hill, SC; Brother of the heart: Carl Adams; Special Nieces: Crystal A. (Tony) Pope, and Alexis and Tiffany A. David Curtis 'Dickey' Johnson

PATRICK - Mr. David Curtis “Dickey” Johnson, age 71, died Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at his home.

A service of celebration was held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 13, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Interment followed in the Patrick Cemetery.

Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 13, 2015 prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson was born August 5, 1943 in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Fletcher and Bertha Therrell Johnson. He was a retired employee of Highland Industries and a former member of the SC Army National Guard. Dickey loved his dogs, and enjoyed fishing and raising

chickens. In addition to his parents, Dickey was also preceded in death by 2 sons, David Curtis Johnson, Jr. and Ronald Wayne Johnson; 2 brothers, W.M. and Junior Johnson; and 5 sisters, Margaret Rivers, Helen Lewis, Beatrice Bill, Ruby Melton and Frances Nolan.

Survivors include 1 Son: Dewitt Johnson of Patrick, SC; 2 Daughters: Crystal Johnson of Patrick, SC and Teresa Moore of Chesterfield, SC; 5 Grandchildren: David Dewitt Johnson, Jr., Taylor Johnson, Kaitlyn Johnson, and Dalton and Kelsey Moore; and 1 Sister: Lydia (Jeter) Tolson of Chesterfield, SC.

CHERAW - Ms. Shirley Davis Johnson, age 71, died Sunday, February 8, 2015 at her home.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Ms. Johnson was born March 28, 1943 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late James Lee Davis and Annie Mae Poston Davis. She was a former employee of Cheraw Cotton Mill and INA USA. Shirley loved taking care of all her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her brothers; Jackie Davis, Eddie Davis, and James “Pete” Davis, and by her sister Leona Purvis.

Survivors 1 Son: Randy Roscoe of Chesterfield, SC; 3 Daughters: Betty (Joey) Linton, Robbie (Dale Gainey) Roscoe, and Carol Sue (John Driggers) Jones all of Cheraw, SC; Grandchildren: Teddy Roscoe, Casey Thompson, Danny Jones, Rodney Quick, Allen Haire, and Brandy Roscoe; Great Grandchildren: T. J. Roscoe, Justine Oxendine, Brandon Milligan, Kaylei Thompson, and Kynnedy Quick.

PAGELAND - Mrs. Effie Myers Mills, age 77, died Thursday, February 12, 2015.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 16, 2015 at Center Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mills was born March 18, 1937 in Mt. Croghan, SC a daughter of the late Frank and Lena Gibson Myers. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield Yarn Mill with 39 years of service. Effie was also a faithful member of Center Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Mills; a brother, Floyd Myers; and a sister, Rilla Mae Gibson.

Survivors include 1 Son: Timothy L. Mills of Pageland, SC; 1 Grandson: Matthew Mills; Also a number of Cousins and Dear Friends.

Sadako Morikawa Studebaker

PATRICK - Mrs. Sadako Morikawa Studebaker, age 82, died Thursday, February 12, 2015.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

Mrs. Studebaker was born December 30, 1932 in Japan. She was the daughter of the late Fusao Shiizaki and Yaeko Morikawa. Following World War II, she met and married the late Joseph Elizah Studebaker, Jr. and moved to the United States and became a U.S. Citizen on November 20, 1959. After arriving in the States, Sadako began teaching art in Beaufort County, SC. She enjoyed working with ceramics, gardening, and growing pretty flowers, especially camellias, roses, and azaleas. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Studebaker was also preceded in death by her son, Joseph E. Studebaker, III.

Survivors include Daughter-in-law: Mona McNally Studebaker of Patrick, SC; 2 Granddaughters: Lisa S. (Bryan) Tolson, and Erin E. Studebaker both of Patrick, SC; 1 Great Granddaughter: Makayla Tolson.

Kay Clanton Gardner

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Kay Clanton Gardner, age 68, died Wednesday, February 4, 2015.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Saturday, prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gardner was born November 29, 1946 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Ray Clanton and Azalee Douglas Clanton. She was a graduate of Ruby High School and a retired employee of A.O. Smith with 30 years of service. Mrs. Gardner was a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church. Kay enjoyed baking, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Kay was also preceded in death by her husband, William Gardner; a son, Jerry Gardner; and by a grandson, Gabe Gardner.

Survivors include 5 Sons: Scott Gardner and Chris (Angela Jones) Gardner both of Chesterfield, SC, Nelson (Kathy) Gardner of Seneca, SC, Rev. Jeff (Teresa) Gardner of Gibsonville, NC, and David (Courtney) Hair of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Daughter: Sharon (Mike) Kimrey of Cheraw, SC

Betty Russell Mungo

PAGELAND - Betty Russell Mungo, age 78, of Pageland, SC, died peacefully on February 4, 2015 at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point, NC, with her family by her side. Mrs. Mungo was born August 3, 1936, the Daughter of Edgar and Dorothy Jave Coble Russell. She was a native of Burnsville, NC. She graduated as an R.N. from Nursing School at Presbyterian School of Nursing in Charlotte. She married Ray V. Mungo and moved with her family to Pageland, SC, in 1961. She was a special nurse for the Pageland Community. She enjoyed reading, painting, needlework and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Mungo was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her Son, Ray Vaughn Mungo, Jr. (Beth) of High Point, NC, Grandchildren, Lauren Woolard (Derek) and Daniel Mungo both of High Point, NC, Brothers, John Russell (Martha) of Rockwell, NC, Cecil Russell (Flossy) of Marshville, NC, David Russell (Doris) of Monroe, NC, Kenneth Russell (Laraine) of Polkton, NC and Many Nieces and Nephews.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Pageland. The family received friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Baumgartner Funeral Home in Pageland, SC.

J. W. 'Well Digger' Rivers

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. J. W. “Well Digger” Rivers, age 80, died Friday, February 6, 2015.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2:00 – 3:00 PM, Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Rivers was born January 6, 1935 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late John Weldon and Mattie Lua Gardner Rivers. He was a well digger and a former member of the SC National Guard. J.W. was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, a Mason, and President of the Red Land Hunting Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf. J.W. also enjoyed raising dogs and picking cotton with a cotton picker. In addition to his parents, J.W. was also preceded in death by his son, John Weldon Rivers, III; a daughter, Julie Anna Rivers; brothers, Nelson Rivers and Rev. Lindsey Rivers; and sisters, Dorothy Lou Davis and Melba Brock.

Survivors include 2 Daughters: Myra Rivers and Melinda (Clay) Treadaway both of Chesterfield, SC; 3 Grandchildren: Casey (Amy) Rivers, Brooke Treadaway, and Colton Treadaway; 1 Great Grandchild: Charlie Rivers; Also a number of Nieces and Nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd. Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169 or to a charity of one’s choice.
