WALLACE - Rev. John Bryant Steen, 80, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw, SC.
A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at White's Creek Free Will Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Jerry Wayne Shaw and the Rev. Charles Cox. Burial followed at White's Creek Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. A visitation was held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Burroughs-Cooper-Kiser Funeral Home.
Born October 26, 1934 in Bennettsville, SC he was son of the late, John Neil and Elizabeth Chavis Steen. Rev. Steen was a member of White's Creek Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as a minister for 15 years. He was also an electrician with United Technologies. Mr. Steen enjoyed farming, John Deere tractors, and NASCAR. He also liked red trucks, and loved spending time with his family.
Along with his parents listed above, he was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Steen; a granddaughter, Jill Griggs; brothers, Bobby Steen, Hampton Steen, Wesley Steen, Charles Steen, Bruce Steen, and James Steen; and a sister, Peggy Watson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Geneva E. Steen of the home; a daughter, Sandy Griggs of Wallace; a daughter-in-law, Faye Steen of Wallace; a brother, Gary Steen of Bennettsville; sisters, Helen Tilley (James) of Cheraw, Doris Kennedy (Jerry) of Fayetteville, NC, Kathy Outlaw of Wallace, Mary Ann Moody (Steve) of Bennettsville, and Nell Byrd (Sonny) of McColl; grandchildren, Brent Steen (Dana), Jason Steen (Chasity), Jeremy Steen (Ashley), Jonathan Griggs (Zan), Jamie Steen (Amy); and great-grandchildren, Dustin, Camryn, Cooper, Savannah, Tegan, Makayla, Brenlynn, Tatum, Aaron, and an expected great-granddaughter, Madison.

Sybil M. Trulove
CHERAW - Sybil M. Trulove, 99, died Friday, January 30, 2015. Born in Murphy, NC she was a daughter of the late E.A and Laura Kelly Montgomery. She was the last survivor of 10 siblings and the widow of Elmer E. Trulove, Sr. Mrs. Trulove was a member of Cheraw First Baptist Church, Belle Hurt Sunday School class, Bible Study Group I, and the Women’s Missionary Union. She gave lovingly of her time and talents working in the Nursery and with Vacation Bible School throughout her life. Cheraw First Baptist Church awarded her “Mother of the Year” in 1976. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors are her son E. Earl (Pat) Trulove, Jr. of Norwood, NC, a daughter, Shirley Trulove Huggins of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Brian (Nancy) Huggins, Tim (Kristi) Huggins, Chris (Shanda) Trulove, great grandchildren, Cody, Tyler, Katie, Brayden, Ashlyn and Dawson.

Sara Yates Cook
CHERAW – Sara Yates Cook, 84, died Monday, January 26, 2015. Born in Cheraw, SC she was the daughter of the late Daniel Clyde and Eula Jane Hathcock Yates. She was the widow of John Edward Cook, Jr. She was retired from Crown, Cork and Seal. She had been a member of Mt. Olivet UMC and First UMC both in Cheraw, SC. She was a member of the Kinsey Mulloy Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. She loved spending time with family.
Surviving are her daughters, Janice T. (Crawford) Moore of Summerville, SC, Diane T. (Larry) Teal of Rincon, GA, a step-daughter, Annette Cook of Columbia, SC, a brother, Thomas C. Yates of Gastonia, NC, grandchildren, Becky Moore, Katie Moore, Eric Teal, and Mark Teal, a sister-in-law, Betty Yates of Cheraw, SC.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above also her first husband William Robert Turnage and brothers, James W. Yates and Harrison Yates.
The family received friends 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Denise Funderburk
TEMPLE HILLS, Md. – Denise Funderburk, 50, died on December 16, 2014. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at noon from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. Denise was the daughter of the late Elijah J. and Gloria Watson Funderburk on December 21, 1963 in Washington, DC.. She graduated from Spingarn Sr. High School and attended Peace Corp training and medical school but decided to work for the government in 1981. Her career with the government consisted of working for the National Archives, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Dept. of Homeland Security Transportation Administration. She was currently employed with the National Credit Bureau. Survivors: a son, Travon Funderburk, Temple Hills, MD; a sister, Debra Funderburk, Laurel, MD. .
Mardessie Robinson Hancock
CHERAW – Mardessie Robinson Hancock, 92, died on, Saturday, January 3, 2015. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 9, 2015 at noon from the Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Foundry Hill Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. She was the daughter of the late Maggie Perry Robinson and John Adam, born August 8, 1923 in Chesterfield County, SC. Mardessie was married to the late McKinley Hancock. She attended the Chesterfield County public school system and received her C.N.A. Degree from Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College. She was employed with Ingram Motor Court, B.C. Moores Warehouse, and J&K Grill. Prior to retiring, Mardessie provided home healthcare for many families in the community. Survivors: a daughter, Ruby R. Lloyd, Cheraw, SC; a grandson, Brandon Hancock of the home; 3 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
Leroy Jackson
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Leroy Jackson, 68, died on Monday, December 29, 2014. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 2pm from the Gum Spring Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Leroy was the son of the late Edward and Lillie Bennett Jackson on February 24, 1946 in Chesterfield County, SC. Survivors: his wife, Minerva; a daughter, Muriel Jackson, Concord, NC; two sons, Patrick Jackson, Concord, NC and Leroy Jackson, Jr., Rock Hill, SC; a brother, Samuel Jackson, Pageland, SC; six grandchildren.
William Scott Joplin
CHESTERFIELD – Mr. William Scott Joplin, age 53, died Thursday, January 29, 2015.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel Chesterfield, SC. Interment followed in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery, Ruby SC.
Visitation was from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 31, 2015, prior to service at Funeral Home.
Mr. Joplin was born June 12, 1961 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late William Leverne and Myra Lee “Susie” Brock Joplin. He was a 1979 graduate of Chesterfield High School and attended Chesterfield-Marlboro TEC. Scott was a welder and race car builder, and former owner of Scott Joplin’s Race Cars. Mr. Joplin was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and attended White Oak Presbyterian Church. Scott enjoyed racing, taking rides in the country, football, baseball, and talking with his friends. He never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, Scott was also preceded in death by his son, Johnathan Spencer Joplin.
Survivors include Wife: Gail Wilkes Joplin of the home; Step Son: Shannon (Stephanie) Rivers of Chesterfield, SC; Step Daughter: Ashley (Justin) Neel of Hartsville, SC; 2 Step Grandchildren: Payton Neel and Olivia Rivers; Also: A number of Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins

Mary Blanche Corry Laney
CHERAW – Mary Blanche Corry Laney, 85, died Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at her daughter’s Pawley’s Island home surrounded by her children. Her death was peaceful and brave. Born in Bennettsville, SC, Mary Blanche was the daughter of the late John Stanhope Corry, Sr. and Pocahontas Edens Corry. She was the widow of Campbell Plyler Laney, Jr. Mary Blanche Laney was retired from Chesterfield County Library Systems, a job that she loved.
She is survived by her children, Corry Laney Hudson, of Pawleys Island, John (Joani) Laney of Clarkston, WA, and Jean Ann (Steve) Brakefield of Murrells Inlet, SC, Her surviving sisters-in-law, Margaret Ready Corry of Bennettsville, SC, and Ethel Ann Laney (James) Streater of Cheraw. Mary Blanche had seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also a brother John S. Corry, Jr.
The family received friends at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 31st. A brief Celebration of Life service will begin at 1:30 PM in the Chapel. Mrs. Laney will be remembered for all that she gave to the community of Cheraw and the people she loved.

Dorsey Miller
JEFFERSON – Dorsey Miller, 65, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 1pm from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. He was the son of the late Dorsey B. Miller, Sr. and Pauline Matthews Miller, born on March 18, 1949 in Union County, NC. Dorsey graduated from Jefferson High School in 1967. Afterwards, he attended Winston-Salem State University where he received a B.S. degree in Physical Education and pledged Delta Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Incorporated. He worked his tenure with Brach & Lipton Companies. Survivors: his wife, Constance Withers-Miller.
Douglas Bryan Quick
WALLACE – Douglas Bryan Quick, 51, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Born in Bennettsville, SC he was a son of the late Henry Frank and Mildred Elizabeth Chavis Quick. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and Clemson Football.
Surviving is his wife, Susan L. Quick of Wallace, SC, a daughter, Kasey Brigman of Wallace, SC, a brother, Henry Frank “Frankie” Quick, Jr. of Wallace, SC, grandchildren, C.J. Brigman, Keely Brigman, two nieces, Lindsey (Zach) Ellis of Fuquay-Varina, NC and Casey (Michael) Roscoe of Jacksonville, FL.

Evelyn Love Reid
JEFFERSON – Evelyn Love Reid, 93, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 6, 2015, 1pm at the Hopewell United Methodist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the Love Family Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. She was the daughter of the late James Lemuel Love and Effie Chaplin. Love was born May 30, 1921 in Jefferson, SC. Evelyn attended Shannon Training School through elementary and graduated from Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy in Camden, South Carolina. She graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC and was valedictorian of her class. Evelyn also did some graduate studies at North Carolina State College, Columbia College, North Carolina A & T University and the University of South Carolina. Her teaching career began with Shannon Training School in Jefferson, South Carolina and continued for forty-five years with the Chesterfield County public school system. Survivors: two daughters, Sharon Reid Robinson, Jefferson, SC and Gloria Reid, of the home; two grandsons, Dana Frederic Reid, Charlotte, NC and Carey Lemuel Reid, Jefferson, SC; eleven grandchildren and a great grandchild; a brother, John Wesley Miller, Jefferson, SC. Mary Ellen Poe Thorpe
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., formerly of Cheraw, – Mary Ellen Poe Thorpe, 92, died on Sunday, January 4, 2015. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11am from the Wesley United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. Mary was born in Cheraw, South Carolina, to the late Warren and Lottie McIntosh Poe. She was educated in the Cheraw Public School system, after graduating from high school, she continued her education at Coulter Memorial Academy where she earned a degree in Education. After teaching in the Virginia area for several years, Mary Ellen began working at Woodward & Lothrop Dept. Stores, she remained there for over 35 years. She was preceded in death by her first spouse Noah Williams. They had a daughter, Priscilla Elaine Williams, who also preceded her in death. Her second spouse was the late Theodore Thorpe, Sr., from that union they had a son, Theodore Thorpe, Jr. Survivors: Theodore Thorpe, Jr.; granddaughters: Tara Robinson and Theodora Bullock; two grandsons: Bobby Rich, Jr. and Todd Rich. She also had three great-grandchildren.

CHESTERFIELD - Reverend Diane Belk, 55, died on Sunday, August 9, 2015. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 2PM from the Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Mt. Airy A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. She was born on December 27, 1959 in Chesterfield, SC to the late Viola Cash Watson and James O. McCoy. Reverend Belk was currently serving as pastor of the Gold Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Lancaster, SC. Survivors: Clayton Cyrano Lewis Belk; three sons, Cyrano Keron Belk (Janie Wright), Branden Jeffrey Belk (Benita) and Daylen Antoine Belk (Latoya Jackson); three precious grandchildren, Nylah Amira, Azaira Kearia and Naveen Ashton; eight sisters, Mae Heath (Michael), Cheraw, SC, Frances Wilson (John), Ruby, SC, Patricia Cash, Chesterfield, SC, Icy Douglas (Anthony), Chesterfield, SC, Annie Hames (Fred), Jenie Dogier, Sue McCoy and Shirley Ethridge all of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Chester Lowery and James McCoy, both of Charlotte, NC. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield was in charge. .

WALLACE - Mary Louise Brown, 90, died Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Born in Marlboro County she was a daughter of the late James and Lillie Rainwater Quick. She was the widow of Grady Brown, Sr. (married for 68 years). She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Wallace, SC and was the teacher of the Adult Sunday School for many years.
Surviving are her daughters, Martina B. (David) Thomas of Lexington, SC, Janet B. Hines of Wallace, SC, Kay B. Hall of Wallace, SC, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, a son Grady Brown, Jr. also her sibling, Charlie, Silas, Samson, James, Sis, Carrie, Salley, Laura, Polly and Margie.

MT. CROGHAN - Mr. Gary Warren McLean, age 79, died, Thursday, August 13, 2015 at his home.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Fork Creek United Methodist Church, Jefferson, SC. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Friday, August 14, 2015, at the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.
Mr. McLean was born March 31, 1936, in Westhope, ND, a son of the late Aldon Hector McLean and Melba Maxine Howery McLean Hallgren. He was a retired employee of Calanese Corp. with 28 years of service and a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. Mr. McLean was a member of Fork Creek United Methodist Church. Gary was a member of the Masonic Lodge 385, in Rock Hill, SC, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 131, and was a Shriner.
Survivors include Wife of 52 years: Betty E. McLean of the home; Daughter: Wanda (Monty) Floyd of Mt. Croghan, SC; Grandsons: Andy Smith of Lancaster, SC and J.R. Floyd, Jr. of Mt. Croghan, SC; and Great Grandson: Bentley Floyd.
The McLean Family would like to say a special thank you, to all their friends and neighbors, and to Kendra and Ethel and all the staff of Regency Hospice for all the wonderful care and support shown to them and their loved one.
