Terry W. Gibson
Retired Army sergeant

Ret. S/Sgt/ Terry Wayne Gibson, 55, of 709 Rice Ave. Ext., died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Gibson was born Oct. 13, 1948, in Gaffney, a son of Mr. C. F. Gibson of Pacolet and the late Juanita Knox Gibson. He was a former postal employee and had retired from the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War. Mr. Gibson was a member of Burnsview Baptist Church of Greer.

Surviving in addition to his father are three sons, Rodney Hope Gibson of New Jersey, T. Duane and Heather Gibson and Dean and Christie Gibson, all of Union; a step-son, Quinton Scott Liong, who is currently stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army and his wife, Natausha of Georgia; two sisters, Evelyn Rector of Pacolet and Shirley Willingham of Gaffney; and three step-granddaughters, Kassidy Chaney of Union and Cheyenne Liong-Mills and Noriah Liong, both of Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Huckaby with full military rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379 or South Carolina Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 5317, West Columbia, S.C. 29171-5317.

The family is at the home of his son, Dean and Christie Gibson, 134 Catawba Hill Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James H. Greene
Retired carpenter

James H. Greene, 84, husband of Mary C. Greene, formerly of 411 Kelly Road, Union, died Monday Dec. 8, 2003, at Magnolia Manor, Inman. Mr. Greene was born in Union, March 6, 1919, a son of the late Barry and Fannie Gregory Greene. He was a self-employed carpenter and of the Church of God faith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a step-son, Jackie and Catherine Turner of Deland, Fla. Mr. Greene was predeceased by a sister, Jeanette Lankford. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James W. Hardy

JONESVILLE - James Willie Hardy, 67, of 653 Rogerstown Road, Jonesville, husband of Ella Mae Rodgers Hardy, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.

William T. Proctor Jr.
Vietnam War veteran

William Thomas Proctor Jr., 62, of Ann Marie Rehabilitation Center, North Augusta, formerly of 124 Baber St., Union, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at 12:42 p.m. in the University Medical Center in Augusta, Ga. Mr. Proctor was born in Union on Sept. 13, 1941, a son of Margaret Davis Gowan of Union and the late William Thomas Proctor Sr. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Proctor was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired security guard with Security Forces.

Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Michael Proctor, Robbie Proctor and Jason Proctor, all of Union, and three grandchildren. Mr. Proctor was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Proctor. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Gary Peterson.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8. The family is at the home, 124 Baber St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lucille S. Comer
Retired from Conso

Sarah Lucille Stepp Comer, 78, of 2034 Jonesville Highway, widow of Bill Comer, died Dec. 8, 2002, at 2:20 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Comer was born in Union on April 23, 1924, a daughter of the late Geter D. and Mittie Moseley Stepp. She was a member of the New Life Baptist Church. Mrs. Comer was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Conso Products.

Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia C. Smith of Union; two sons, Wayne Comer and Donald Comer both of Union; two sisters, Sue S. Fowler of Marion, N.C.; and Grace S. Lane of Union; two brothers, Joe T. Stepp of Jonesville and Vernon Stepp of Lockhart; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Kent Smith, Tommy Humphries, Steve Trammel, Charles Sanders, Kenneth Black and Donald W. Comer.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, 2034 Jonesville Highway. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

John W. Edwards Jr.
Retired from Acme Mills

John William Edwards Jr., 77, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, widower of Clara Whitlock Edwards, died Dec. 10, 2002, at 9:05 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mr. Edwards was born in Union on July 28, 1925, a son of the late John William Edwards Sr. and Lula Keisler Edwards Vinson. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was retired from Acme Mills of Belmont, N.C.

Surviving are a sister, Helen R. Carter of Union; three brothers, Ralph Edwards of Union, Gerald Kent Edwards of Gastonia, N.C.; and Francis Vinson of Coco Beach, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a son, John W. Edwards III; and a brother, Bobby Edwards.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Helen R. Carter, 138 Fant St., Monarch Community, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Beverly C. Mull

Beverly Calvert Mull, 65, of Lot 15, 270 Oakland Rd., widow of Fred W. Mull Sr., died at her home Monday morning. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

James W. Hardy
World War II veteran

James Willie Hardy, 77, of 653 Rodgerstown Road, Jonesville, husband of the Rev. Ella Mae Rodgers Hardy, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was born in Union County on March 11, 1926, a son of the late Kemper and Mamie Gilliam Hardy.

He was employed as an agricultural manager with the Wilburn family for many years. He also was a member of New Ebnezer Baptist Church in Spartanburg, deacon, senior choir, All Male Chorus, Masonic Enterprise Lodge #460, Lady Esther Chapter #353, Order of the Eastern Star, and also a Naval veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five sons, the Rev. David Lee (Maggie) Hardy of Anderson, Terry K. (Christine Abbott) Hardy of Dale City, Okla, James T. (Sherie Ann) Hardy Sr., Richard S. Hardy and Willie J. (Yong Hui) Hardy, all of Jonesville; two adopted daughters, Mary Bivings of Spartanburg and Cookie Ross of Florida; two sisters, Reola Coleman and Maragaret Gardner, both of Union; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rice Chapel AME Zion Church in Buffalo with the Rev. George Downs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday to await the hour of service. Wake services and viewing will be held this evening from 6 until 7 at the Carolina Mortuary. The family is at the home, 653 Rodgerstown Road, Jonesville. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.

John W. Edwards Jr.
Retired from Acme Mills

Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry, SC 29108-0352. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James Glenn

James (Cellars) Glenn, 49, of 206 Sartor Ave., Carlisle, died Dec. 8, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Whitney Funeral Home.

Pearl W. Joiner
Eastern Star

WHITMIRE - (Ma) Pearl Whitener Joiner, 103, of Whitmire, died Dec. 9, 2002, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Joiner was born in Newberry County on March 22, 1899, a daughter of the late Hattie Mack Whitener and Adam Gregory. She was a member of Love Chapel Holiness Church. She was also a member of Magnolia Chapter #307 O.E.S.

Surviving are four daughters, LE McCurdy of Philadelphia, Pa.; Hattie Mae Brown, Roxie Vanlue and Doris Epps all of Whitmire; four sons, William (Bill) Joiner of Durham, N.C.; Mannikin Joiner of Thomasville, N.C.; Bluford Joiner and Elbert Epps both of Whitmire; two sisters; 51 grandchildren; 170 great-grandchildren; 200 great-great-grandchildren; and 50 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. joiner was predeceased by her husband, Henderson (Hundy) Joiner; three sons, James Jimmy, Johnny and J.C.; and a daughter, Earline. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Love Chapel Holiness Church in Whitmire. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the church. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
