Funeral Services for Karl Wilson Waston, Jr., will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 in Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

On Sunday night, January 17, 2010 God and his infinite wisdom, knowledge and understanding called Karl Wilson Watson, Jr. to eternal rest.

Karl was born in Columbia, South Carolina on February 5, 1991 to Karl Wilson Watson, Sr. and Romanetha Gabriel Picasso-Brown. He attended schools in Richland County District One. He liked dancing, drawing, and music. He was a free-loving spirit.

Left to cherish his beautiful memories are: his father, Karl Wilson Watson, Sr; mother Romanetha Gabriel Picasso-Brown; brothers, Kenneth C. Smithers Brown, Charlton Martin Brown, Jr., Wynton Martin Brown, and Jeremiah Hogg; sisters Romanetha Gabriel Picasso-Brown and Brianna Sinkler; paternal grandparents, Jerome and Jessie Fogle Watson; maternal grandmother, Laura Dell Brown; two aunts, one uncle, and a host of cousins and friends.

Joseph "John" Mack
(April 14, 1936 - January 16, 2010)

Funeral Services for Joseph "John" Mack will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 in the Rehoboth United Church of Jesus Christ, 3420 North Beltline Blvd. Burial will be held on Monday, January 25, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Joseph “John” Mack, Sr., of Columbia, South Carolina, departed this life on Saturday, January 16, 2010 and entered into rest in the presence of God.Born in Hopkins, South Carolina, April 14, 1936, to Abraham and Sarah “Po Ma” Mack,

John was an excellent student attending both the Richland and Hopkins County School Systems; and Midlands Technical College.

John was proud to serve his country; entering into the United States Army in 1953. While in the Army, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1957.

Throughout his life, he continued that same level of dedication and service; in his work life, he was valued employee of the Coburg Milk Company and Trailways Bus Lines. In service to his community, he held positions with both the SC Department of Corrections and the SC Department of Social Services.

In service to his fellowman; he attended the Rehoboth United Apostolic Church for more than fifty years. Where he was the first MALE member at the time; he was also the first Deacon Elect at the Rehoboth Church.

Left to celebrate his life are his legacy; his wife Mrs. Lovella B. Mack, a daughters, Mrs. Pearlie M.Utsey, Mrs Reatha M. James (Neil), Ms. Fannie M. Mack, and Mrs. Jacqueline D. Lewis (Stacey). His sons, Mr. Donald T. Mack and Mr. Charles J. Mack. 22 Grand Children and other loving relatives and Special Friends – Pamela Martin (Richard), Nattie Brown (George)

Loretta Simpkins
(March 5, 1958 - January 11, 2010)

Funeral Services for Loretta Simpkins will be held 12:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 in the Spring Hill A. M. E. Church, 228 Windy Hill Court, Gilbert, South Carolina with burial in Promised Land Cemetery.

Loretta Simpkins, daughter of the late Andrew and Virginia Simpkins, was called to her heavenly home on Monday, January 11, 2010.

Loretta was born in Leesville, South Carolina on March 5, 1958. She attended the public schools of Batesburg Leesville.

Loretta was a member of the Columbia District Lay Organization, Head of the second Sunday Ushers, and a Seward of the Church.

Left to Cherish her beautiful memories, daughter, Demetra Chavice (Curtis) Bush; her beautiful angel Granddaughter, Lauren Caroline Bush; five sisters, Patricia Thompson, Carolyn (Marvin) Gates, Lucille (Ronald) Williams, Alfreida (Reginald) Butler, and Phyllis Simpkins; three brothers, Anthony (Sandra) Simpkins, Timothy Simpkins, Johnny (Nedra) Simpkins,; a special friend, Anthony Hembrick; one uncle, Bernice (Flossie) Simpkins; aunts, Mamie Speach, Jerry Simpkins, and Mary Simpkins, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Tunisha Renee Beasley
(September 18, 1992 - December 19, 2009)

Funeral Services for Tunisia Renee Beasley, 17, will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in the Bibleway Church of Atlas Road with burial in Palmetto Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Zion Mill Creek Baptist Church, 97 Mill Creek Parkway, Hopkins.

Tunisia Renee Beasley, affectionately known as “Tee” and by her father as “Queen of Sheba” was born in Ft. Belvoir, VA on September 18, 1992 to Jerome Beasley and Leslie Gamble.

Tunisia was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Though she is no longer physically with us, her loving and kind spirit will forever live in the hearts and lives of all who loved and knew her.

A Time to Be With God
On Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC, God saw that His servants had grown tired, so he whispered and said “Come unto me, all ye that labour and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (St. Matthews 11:28) She obeyed and traded her life for eternal days in paradise with the Lord where she will be playing with Grand Orchestra of All Orchestras!

Tunisia leaves an abundance of beautiful memories to a family that will mourn her passing which includes: her mother, Leslie Gamble; her father, Jerome L. Beasley; sisters Christian Gamble and Jasmine Beasley; brothers, Jordan Beasley and Justin Beasley; step-mother, Katrika Beasley; step-brothers Keith Bates, Torey Bates, and Todd Garrett and one niece Taliyah Bates all of Columbia, SC, Grandmother, Gloria V. Gamble of Somerdale, NJ; Grandfather Henry L. Gamble of Lynchburg, SC; Grandparents Roland and Margaret Beasley of TN; Uncles Jarvis Gamble and Derek Gamble of Philadelphia, PA; a host of cousins, many other loving relatives and caring friends all of whom join the family in sharing the grief caused by her departure, but rejoice that she is resting with the Lord.

A Time for Commitment
Tunisia accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She became a member of Mississippi Blv Christian Church in Memphis, TN.

Tunisia attended Lower Richland High School Class of 2010. Tunisia was a very kind at heart and had a bubbly personality. She will forever be missed by those who truly knew and loved her.

Tunisia was a member of: the National Honor Society, Kids Across America Christian Camp, Women of Destiny Program, 4 year Camper Award, Gentle Spirit Award for her kind heart towards others, Higher Ground Program, Summer Intern Volunteer, Memphis Leadership Foundation, Youth Striving for Excellence, Lower Richland’s Peer Leadership, Diamond Orchestra member, Teacher assistance in guidance, Honor Student, Dance in the 9th Grade, and the Beta Club at Hopkins Middle School.

In her future, her plans were to become a Dentist. Tunisia was accepted at: USC Aiken, Francis Marion University, Coker College, and USC Columbia. Tunisia was in the process of enlisting in the US Air Force and National Guard.

Awards:
First Tee Award for Golf Camp, Redbirds Softball (2 years coach pit), and All Star Player (one year) in Memphis, TN.

Mr. Donald Frederick Knight
Nov 16, 1960 - Dec 5, 2014

Donald Frederick Knight was born November 16, 1960, in Manhattan, New York, to Peggy Ann (Webb) Washington.

Frederick (aka "Freddy"and "Freddy D."¯) received his early education in the public schools of Norwalk, Connecticut.

In 1977, Freddy's family relocated to Sumter, South Carolina, where he graduated from Sumter High School in 1978. He went on to attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia and later transferred to Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Communications. In 1980, while at Winthrop, he met Deirdre Lynn Bass. They were united in marriage and to this union three children were born.

Frederick began his broadcasting career in Rock Hill at WRHI radio station before moving back to Sumter to raise his family. While in Sumter, he worked for Z99 radio station. During his broadcasting career Freddy worked for a number of television and radio stations, as well as record companies, which included WWDM (aka "The Big DM"¯) 101.3 FM, Universal Records, ABC News 19, ABC TV 25, WACH Fox 57, and WJKS (aka KISS) 103.1 FM. During his stent at The Big DM, he became well known as the "Microphone Doctor".¯

Over his expansive career, Frederick worked with a number of well-known personalities within the entertainment industry that led to the creation of his own company, Tri-K Entertainment Services. Freddy went on to form TKE Media, which encompassed MyMetroTV, a weekly infotainment television show on WACH Fox 57, and PowerOfPraiseTV, an inspirational multi- media network.

Frederick was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and the 100 Black Men of Greater Columbia (SC).

Frederick leaves to cherish his precious memories his wife, Deirdre Knight; mother, Peggy Washington of Sumter, SC; stepfather, Vernon Washington of Sumter, SC; three children, Jules Knight, Kelly Knight both of Columbia, SC, and Brittany Knight of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Chaundria Jones of GA; his brothers, Clifford Knight of Tampa, FL, and Scott Knight of Atlanta, GA; his sister, Marcella Murray of Sumter, SC and a host of nieces and nephews.

Jimmie Calvin Hammond
(March 25, 1951- December 16, 2009)

Funeral Services for Jimmie Calvin Hammond will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in The Greater St. Luke Baptist Church, 5200 Farrow Road with burial in Palmetto Cemetery.

Jimmie “Calvin” Hammond was born March 25, 1951 in Trenton, SC. He was the son of the late Willie Hammond and Alberta Hamp.

On Wednesday, December 16, 2009, Calvin departed this earthly life and entered into the presence of our Lord.

Calvin was educated in the public schools of Richland County and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1969. Calvin furthered his education at Benedict College in Columbia, SC, where he earned a Bachelors of Science Degree. While at Benedict College, he also pledged and became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Calvin was also a member of the Beaver #7 Masonic Lodge where he reached the 33rd Degree. Immediately after graduating from Benedict College, he was employed by the University of South Carolina as a Marine Biologist and later moved to Kenner, Louisiana.

Annie Ruth Reed Starkes
(June 16, 1925 - December 16, 2009)

Funeral Services for Mother Annie Ruth Reed Starkes will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009 in the Refuge House of Prayer, 311 Lexington Street, West Columbia with burial in Palmetto Cemetery.

Mother Annie Ruth Reed Starkes, wife of Damon Starkes and daughter of the late Lucius and Mattie Lee Brooker, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 16, 2009.

Mother Starkes was born in Swansea, South Carolina on June 16, 1925. She attended the Monroe Pinckney High School and later receiveed her high school diploma from Richland County School District Number One. She also attended Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.

Mother Starkes was a loving, caring and compassionate person who loved her family unconditionally. She spent her life serving God, family and others. One of her favorite pastimes was cooking and always having food available for anyone who just happened to stop by her home. She worked as a nurse's assistant, Grandmother to Disabled Children at Pendergrass Fairwold School, Mother's Board, and Pastor's Aide Committee.

Mother Starkes are preceded in death by two sisters, Estelle (Larry, deceased) Yarns and Geneva Glover and one brother, James (Geneva, deceased) Brooker.

Left to cherish her beautiful memory are her husband of 67 years, Damon Starkes, her childen, Isabell Mitchell, Columbia,SC, Colonel (USAF Ret) Sheldon D. (Elaine) Starkes, Sr., Montclair, VA, Colonel (USAF Ret) Virgil A. (Sandra) Starkes, Sr., Schertx, TX, Marvin Starkes, Columbia, SC; two brothers, Robert L. (Ethel) Glover and Nelson (Julia Mae) Brooker, and a host of other relatives.

Sadie Lee Kennedy
(June 9, 1936 - Novemeber 29, 2009)

Funeral Services for Mrs. Sadie Lee Morgan Kennedy will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Decemeber 5, 2009 in the Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Sadie L. Kennedy was born June 9, 1936 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of the late Lonnie Morgan and Ophelia Pearson. After a long illness, she departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on November 29, 2009 surronded by her family.

At an early age, Sadie joined Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Winnsboro, South Carolina. She was a active member of the Musical Choir and Sunday School. Sadie was a constant optimist who would internalize and visualize an absolute expectation of a positive outcome of life. One of her common phrases were "it's ok." She leaned on the Lord for guidance and direction and understood that the Lord knew best.

Sadie was educated in the public school system in Richland County and the public schools in Baltimore. She was trained as a nurse's aid and was initially employed at Forest Hill Nursing Home in Columbia. She furthered her career as a machine operator at Pacific Mills, Columbia for many years. She secured a position with Kinder Care Chid Development Center in St. Andrews as the head cook and bus driver. She concluded her career with Kinder Care after making the decision to become the caregiver to her husband, the late Willie T. Kennedy. After the death of her husband in 1997, she began volunteering as a Foster Grandparent with the Forest Height Elementary School for over five years prior to learning of her illness. Sadie enjoyed working with children and assisting the teachers.

Sadie was a member of the Columbia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, The Golden Aces Community Gospel Choir and the Columbia All Stars.

Those left to cherish her wonderful and fond memories; daughters, Shirlyn McIver, Bernice B. (Yancy) Tucker, Janice C. (Joe) Thomas and Bonita Martin; sons, Willie T., Gladis J., James C. and Anthony (Carolyn) Kennedy; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren (one expected birth in December 2009).

Ms. Kathryn "Kat" Mashack
(August 21, 1966 - November 20, 2009)

Funeral Services for Ms. Kathryn "Kat" Mashack will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in the Bride Tabernacle of Jesus Christ Church, 3731 Martin Street, Columbia with burial in McCollom Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2009 beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Kathryn Mashack better known as "Kat" was born August 21, 1966 in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Rosa Mae Mashack and the late Roosevelt Mashack. She attended and graduated from C. A. Johnson High School.

Kathryn was a cheerful and happy person who always tried to keep a smile on her face. She always made people laugh. She will forever be loved and greatly missed.

Kathryn leaves the following to cherish her precious memories; daughter, Nicole Mashack; mother, Rosa Mashack; sisters, Marie Jacobs, Beverly Mashack and Ella McCoy; nieces, Rosemarie and Denise Mashack; nephews, Chavis and Able Mashack; cousins and other relatives and friends who will truly miss Kathryn.

Mrs. Frances Alexander Dorsey
(April 2, 1906 - November 17, 2009)

Funeral Services for Mrs. Frances Alexander Dorsey will be held 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2009 in the New Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1236 Gregg Street, Columbia with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Frances A. Dorsey, the daughter of the late Richard and Millie Jackson Alexander, was born April 2, 1906 in Clover South Carolina. On Tuesday, November 17, 2009, Frances departed this earthly life.

Frances was educated in the public schools of Clover , South Carolina. At the tender age of twelve, Frances moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Soon after, she migrated to Long Island, New York and worked as a live-in caretaker.

Frances was united in holy matrimony to Small W. Dorsey who preceded her in death on April 24, 1987. Their union was blessed with much love, happiness and devotion.

Frances joined Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Horace DeVoe. She served on many auxiliaries at Bethel; however, singing on the choir was what she truly loved.

Frances was a loving person who loved her family dearly. Though she will no longer physically be with us, her loving kind and strong spirit will forever be a part of the hearts and lives of all those who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish fond and precious memories of Frances are her caretakers, Gwendolyn (Roosevelt) Lindler, Kamille Lindler, Armani Lindler and Quincy Banks of the home; sister, Millie Aiken, Charlotte, North Carolina; special nephew, Joe Gettys, Brooklyn, New York; devoted family members, Johnnie M. Franklin, Beverly Franklin, Edmond Franklin and Raven Barber all of Rock Hill South Carolina; loving friend, Amy Moss, Brooklyn; nieces, nephews and a host of loving relatives and dear friends all of whom join with the family in sharing the grief caused by Frances’ departure but rejoice in her homegoing.
