Ms. Margaret Taylor Henry
Margaret Taylor Henry, aka Mutt, was sent on divine assignment by God into the world on February 23, 1943 through the loins of Rev. Leroy (deceased) and Elease Taylor. She had two sisters Rosa Lee Small and Bernice Griffin (Harry) both of Blythewood, SC. Her primary purpose, grace gift, was to serve, educate and nurture those who crossed her path during the course of her life. She lived a life worthy of the call.
Mama was born in Blythewood, SC where she graduated from Bethel High School. While there, she obtained and displayed a plethora of skills and talents including oration, sewing and cooking. According to some, she was the best guard on the basketball team. She continued her education at Benedict College where she earned a degree in Elementary Education.
She began her professional journey as a sixth grade teacher at Gordon Elementary School in Winnsboro, SC. She also taught at E.L. Wright Middle School. She served as an adult education instructor and undecided student advisor at Midlands Technical College. She also volunteered to teach and mentor incarcerated inmates in obtaining their high school diplomas. She was devoted to her colleagues and students and they loved her. It was important to her to keep track and touch base with many of them during the course of her life, as is witnessed here today by your presence.
Now, as all of you are aware, her pride and joy were her “three beautiful daughters," as we've heard her describe us so many times and our children, her grandchildren. We are Tuesday Henry Thompson (Maurice) of College Park, GA; Marlease Henry David (Charles) of Charlotte, NC; Toya Henry Sykes (Kevin) of Upper Marlboro, MD. Her grandchildren Colin Robinson of Colorado Springs, CO, William and Kaiya Sykes of Upper Marlboro, MD never ceased to bring a smile to her face. She had an intense love for “her girls," son–in-laws and grandchildren and she didn't hesitate to brag about us to anyone who would listen. She was our crown jewel and a true matriarch. The bond that she shared with us was unique, rich and amazingly special. She also had many adopted sons and daughters who affectionately called her “Mama Henry".
Mama had a deep compassion for those who were in need. We still marvel and laugh about the many people she brought home to live with us for brief stints to help them out. On one occasion she brought home a homeless person that we fed, clothed and took to a shelter. It was no big deal to her she just loved helping and doing everything she could to change someone's life for the better. As a result, she has a lineage of forever friends and acquaintances who testify of how she made an indelible mark on their lives that can never be erased.
Mama was very creative and crafty. She was famous for designing unique favors and floral arrangements for many weddings and events. She could work wonders with a glue gun. Her last masterpiece were the bouquets and flowers for Tuesday's wedding. She was battling health challenges at the time but was determined to leave her stamp on the occasion.
Some of Mama's favorite pastimes were visiting and taking care of infirmed friends and family, frequenting yard sales and thrift stores, listening to quartet music, writing letters and watching Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud.
A few years ago, she started using Facebook as a method to locate and connect with family and friends. Again, maintaining relationships and friendships was important to her and this tool provided her the ability to stay in touch and check in on a regular basis. She was affectionately dubbed as the “Facebook PoPo" by her grandson, nieces and nephews as she would often venture out to their pages and recommend grammatical corrections, give advice or question a commentary they posted on their pages. As a result she was often “unfriended" by them. Her posts were mainly about her children and grandchildren or giving encouraging words and affirmations to others.
Mama was a woman with strong faith in God. She was saved and endeavoring everyday to grow in her relationship with the Lord. She was a member of World Changers Fellowship Church-Washington, DC where Creflo and Taffi Dollar are the pastors. She loved her church and her church family and they loved her. During her illness, she was unable to physically attend the services but faithfully tuned in by way of the internet broadcast. We would often find her watching with her hands lifted up and praising God.
We would be remised if we did not recognize those who provided consistent support to her during her illness. Her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn Bookhart, James and Jessie Lee Chandler, Betty Johnson, nieces and nephew, Lacontas Johnson, Jametta Moore, Cynthia Roberts-Bunch, Rosie Hill and Chandler Moore. Mama looked forward to and enjoyed their visits and calls and appreciated them for what they did for her. She also loved spending hours on the phone with her cousins Geneva Bright and Emma Reynolds. They all had a way of keeping her spirits up and making her laugh.
In addition to those previously mentioned, she also leaves her aunts and uncles Catherine Jackson (Woody) of Queens, NY; Mary Washington of Blythewood, SC and Malcolm Taylor (Mary) of Hopkins, SC and a host of other special nieces, nephews, cousins and loving and caring friends.
Mama will surely be missed by all of us but we must rejoice that she is with the Lord! This is not the end but a new beginning……..
