Beverly Calvert Mull, 64 of 270 Oakland Road, widow of Fred W. Mull Sr., died at her home Dec. 9, 2002. Mrs. Mull was born in Davenport, Iowa, on July 3, 1938, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Cleon Mildred Calvert. She was a member of the Victory Baptist Church and was formerly employed with Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Oakmont Nursing Home.
Surviving are five daughters, Vicky M. Layton of the home, Sandra M. Daniel of Pacolet, Becky M. Crawford of Union, Donna M. Smith of Pauline and Heidi M. Snyder of Fayetteville, N.C.; a son, Fred W. Mull Jr. of Inman; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Dr. Randy Pettit. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Billy Morris, Kenny Scott, Marshall Mull, Heath Mull, Tony Self, Gerald Eaves, Stevie Leviner and DeWayne Behnke.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, Lot #15, 270 Oakland Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
John C. Gwinn Sr.
EASTOVER - John C. "Curt" Gwinn, Sr., 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003. Born in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late John F. Gwinn and Nellie Layton Gwinn. He was married to Ann Whitener Gwinn and had two sons, John and Layton Gwinn and four grandchildren.
Curt graduated from Union High School Class of 1946, and The Citadel, Class of 1950. He joined the Army as an engineer and a 1ST Leuitenant and was stationed in Ft. Belvior, Va., in 1951. He was later stationed in Okinawa, Japan as an amphibious engineer. From there he served as a general's aide during the Korean War. He returned stateside following his Army commitment in 1953 to start a family and begin his career as a general contractor. He worked for notable Columbia contractors Alvin Creed and Bill Hogan prior to starting his own firm in 1964, following the death of Mr. Hogan.
Under his leadership, Congaree Constuction Co. built over three dozen of Columbia's major landmark structures, including the AT&T, IBM, Koger Center, Marion Gressette, Richland County Judicial Center, Solomon Blatt, USC Blatt PE Center, Fraternity Complex, Columbia Hall, Bates House and the Towers Dormitory; Benedict College Library, PE Center and Dormitory; Columbia College Leadership Center, Lutheran Seminary Library, Rutledge Building, and many others.
His love of rural agriculture led him into supporting the horse and cattle industry. He started Dixieland Arabian Stud Farm, which trained and bred Arabian horses for 25 years and owned Congaree Farms Angus Cattle which raised premier Angus Cattle.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ann Whitener Gwinn; sons, John C. Gwinn, Jr. and his wife, Marie of Hopkins, and R. Layton Gwinn and his wife, Caroline of Hopkins; four grandchildren, Savannah, Curt, Ashbrook and Layton Gwinn. Other surviving family members are Bill and Jeanelle Wingo, J.C. and Mary Ann Wingo and Ernest and Ruth Ann Anthony.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lebanon United Methodist Church, Eastover, with the Reverend Eddie Usher officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will be at the home of Layton and Caroline Gwinn, 1205 R.L. Coward Road, Hopkins. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society or the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
John J. Krpata
John Joseph Krpata, 72, of 935 Meansville Road, Union, widower of Dorothy Ford Krpata, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at 12:30 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Krpata was born in Inwood, N.Y., on Oct. 28, 1931, a son of the late Charles and Ellen Ublecker Krpata. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Mr. Krpata was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion and was retired from Vinyl Window Corp.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. and Janet Krpata with whom he made his home; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia K. and Danny Giannini of Kinep Park, N.Y.; two sisters, Marjorie Hradisky of Atlanta, Ga,. and Mary Piotrowski of Connecticut; three grandchildren, Danielle and Bryan Giannini and Krystal Krpata and a great-grandson, Kaleb A. Krpata. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church conducted by Father Raymond Carlo. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens, with military rites.
Active pallbearers will be Alan Lankford, Randy Sinclair, Dennis Frost, Donnie Horne, Christopher Spencer and Rick Nielson. The body will remain at the funeral home until the hour of service. The family is at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Janet Krpata, 935 Meansville Rd., Union and will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Thomas S. McNeace
BELVEDERE - Funeral services for Thomas S. McNeace, 77, of Beechwood Street, Belvedere,who died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 from the Morningside Baptist Church in Union with the Rev. Harold Wilson and the Rev. Heyward Horton officiating. Interment will be in Union Memorial Gardens with full military honor.
Mr. McNeace was a native of Union, having made Belvedere his home for the past 30 years. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and retired from the Excelsior Woolen Mill. A World War II veteran, Mr. McNeace was a former member of the U.S. Navy Reserve and a retried Sgt. First Class from the U.S. Army National Guard with 26 years of service. He was the former president of the NCO Club of Union.
Survivors include his wife Peggy E. McNeace; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sybil and Steve Moss, Middleburg, Fla., Sandra and Willie Hughes, Aynor, Linda and Marvin Hyatt, Morganton, N.C., and Marsha and Danny Webster, Jackson; a brother, Albert B. McNeace of Union; a sister, Willie Poole of Union; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Steve Moss Jr., Sean Moss, Kevin Switzer Carroway, Travis Lane Hyatt, John Hugh Webster II and Jessie Tipton. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to VA Medical Center, #1 Freedom Way, Attn. Volunteer Services, (119-U) Augusta, Ga., 30904-6285. Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home of North Augusta in charge of arrangements.
Eddie S. Woodson
Eddie Lee Smith Woodson, 92, of 110 Lower Pump Hollow Road, Jonesville, entered eternal rest on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in Mission St. Joseph Hospital, Asheville, N.C. The widow of Robert Lee Woodson Sr., she was a native of Jonesville and was a daughter of the late Ed and Alice Jane Smith. She was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Lillie Mae Smith Littlejohn and Flora Steen, both of Spartanburg, Bernice C. Woodson of the home; a son, Robert L. Woodson Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, including Debra Woodson, Alberta Woodson, Audrey Shaw, Michelle Woodson, Michael and Reggie Woodson, raised in her home; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Bethany Baptist Church Saturday at 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Paul Miller officiating, assisted by the Rev. Duane Cooper and Brother Joseph Shaw. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Gilmore Mortuary of Gaffney is in charge of services.
Berlyn M. Head
Berlyn Mease Head, 76, of 206 Francis Ave., Union, (Monarch Community), widow of Joe D. Head, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at 1:08 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Head was born in Canton, N. C. on April 15, 1927, a daughter of the late Leaton R. and Amy Henson Mease. She was a member of the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church. Mrs. Head was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Milliken & Co. after 48 years service.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joy H. and Terry L. Fisher of Buffalo; two grandchildren, Wendi Fisher of Spartanburg and Joseph Fisher of Buffalo; six sisters, Donna Youngblood of Jonesville, Nina Austin, Nadine McCall, Pauline Sanders, Jaynelle Garner and Loretta Patrick, all of Union; and a brother, R L. Mease of Florida. Mrs. Head was predeceased by a sister, Emma Lee Inman. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham and Dr. Joe Wilson Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be David Youngblood, Kenneth McCall, Daniel Davis, Mark Patrick, Ronnie Head and Kenneth Leonhardt. Ladies of the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group. The family is at their respective homes and will receive fiends at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Saturday from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Randy Wilburn, 131 Bishop Road, Union, S.C. 29379. Gene Kershaw
Gene Kershaw, 45, husband of Linda Hall, of 306 S. Church St., died at his residence Monday, Dec. 8, 2003. He was born in Union Nov. 6, 1958, a son of the late Fletcher Kershaw and Mamie Green Kershaw. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and was a cook at Heart's Drive-In. Surviving are sons, Kevin Lamont Hall, Alonzo Hall and Jerry Hall, all of Union; a daughter, Rena Hall of Union; brothers, Fletcher Kershaw Jr., Isaiah Kershaw and Johnny Willie Kershaw, all of Union; a sister, Gladys Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Union Community Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lonnie Moore. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Visitation will be at the funeral home until 7 this evening. The family will be at 135 William E. Free Pathway, Martinique Estates and at 306 S. Church St. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Grace P. Mitchell
COLUMBIA - Grace Phillips Mitchell, 91, formerly of Union, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in Columbia. Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, John Joseph Mitchell Sr. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Spartanburg, July 3, 1912, a daughter of the late James J. and Bessie Gregory Phillips. She resided in Union from 1931-1999 where she was a very beloved and active member of her church, First Baptist of Union and her community. Following retirement as a librarian at Union High School, she served faithfully for many years as a volunteer at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, J. Joseph Jr. and Emil B. Mitchell of Columbia; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert V. and Jean R. Phillips of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, John J. Mitchell III of Lexington and Marianne M. Warren of Ft. Mill; two grandsons, Michael and Mitchell Dickson, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Douglas and Fred Phillips. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Joe Smith and the Rev. C.D. Williams.
The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main St., Union, S.C. 29379, or to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 7275, Columbia, S.C. 29202. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
James Glenn
CARLISLE - James (Cellars) Glenn, 49, husband of Mary Ferguson Glenn, of 206 Sartor Ave., Carlisle, died Dec. 8, 2002 in Spartanburg Regional Hospital. Mr. Glenn was born in Carlisle May 24, 1953, a son of Essie Glenn and the late Leroy Glenn. He was a graduate of Sims High School and was an active member of Williams Chapel AME Zion Church in Carlisle before his illness.
He was retired from CSX Railroad after 23 years service. He was president of the Local Union Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. Mr. Glenn was involved in community organizations helping people seek endurance and inner peace within themselves.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are five brothers, Leroy Glenn Jr., Raymond Glenn, Larry Glenn, Bruce Glenn and William Glenn, all of Carlisle; two sisters, Lela Glenn and Peggy Glenn of Carlisle; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williams Chapel Church in Carlisle by the Revs. Bruce Dawkins, Larry Davis and Thomas Worthy.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held at the funeral home today from 1-7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 until 11 a.m. The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
