Linda Rivers Sellers

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Linda Rivers Sellers, age 67, died Saturday, October 3, 2015, surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Hurst Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sellers was born November 22, 1947, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late Carson Lucas and Grace Boan Rivers. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, and received her Certified Nursing Assistant from NETC. Linda was a former CNA with Cheraw Healthcare and also was a private duty caregiver. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Linda enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Linda was also preceded in death by her sister, Margie Rae Landon, and by 4 brothers, Truett, Fred, Jessie, and Raymond Rivers.

Survivors include Husband of 49 years: Robert Paul Sellers III of the home; Son: Stevenson (Michelle) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Daughters: Paulette (Bucky) Evans of Mt. Croghan, SC and Lou Anne (Travis) Williams of Ruby, SC; Also 9 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren;

Brother: Kenneth Rivers of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Sisters-in-law: Sue Rivers and Eloise Rivers both of Chesterfield, SC; Father-in-law: Robert Paul Sellers, Jr. of Chesterfield, SC.

Viola Mae Short Blair

PATRICK - Viola Mae Short Blair, 56, died Saturday, September 26, 2015. Born in Pageland, SC, she is a daughter of Vera Cassidy Short and the late Julius Short. She had a passion for people and a love for Jesus. She loved her family with all of her heart and was a good mother and wife. Mrs. Blair loved to make people laugh and never met a stranger. She loved to read her bible and listen to gospel music. Mrs. Blair had previously been an adult Sunday school teacher for many years. She was very proud of her country’s military and supported the Disabled American Veterans. Mrs. Blair loved her cat and her daughter’s dog, Gizmo.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Gary Franklin Blair, a son, Gary Donald Blair of Patrick, SC, a daughter, LaDonna Blair Stroud of Cheraw, SC and a sister, Vivian Short Cassidy (Michael) of Cheraw, SC and 2 grandchildren Landon and Grant Cassidy.

She is preceded in death by her father listed above, a brother Donnie Short, a sister Doris Ann Short and a grandson Hunter Lee Eason.

A memorial service was held Friday, October 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Kiser Funeral Home Chapel, Cheraw, SC.

David Len Bowles

MT. CROGHAN - Mr. David Len Bowles, age 56, went home to be with his Lord, Sunday, September 27, 2015.
A funeral service was held at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Pine Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC. Interment will be held at a later date.
Visitation will be immediately following the Service at the Church.

Mr. Bowles was born October 11, 1958 in Ironton, MO., a son of Charles Lendell and Bonnie Sue Jump Bowles. He was a retired employee of Lowe’s Home Improvement and a very talented carpenter and cabinet builder. David was a U.S. Army Veteran, and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, leather crafts, and sharpening knives.

Survivors include Wife: Debra Jean Bowles of the home; 1 Daughter: Stephanie (Scott) Morton of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Sons: Scott (Shannon) Bedell and Jason Bedell both of Mt. Croghan, SC;

Parents: Charles L. and Bonnie Sue Bowles of Orlando, FL; 6 Granddaughters: Carlee and Jaysa Bedell, Jannessa Bowles-Morton, Randi Lynn, Adrian Grace and Peyton Ashley Morton; 2 Step Grandsons: Austin and T.J. Williams; and Brother: Mathew (Cindy) Bowles of Orlando, FL.

Cassie Bell Cash Hough

CHESTERFIELD - Cassie Bell Cash Hough, 98, died on Sunday, September 27, 2015. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 11am from the Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Davidson Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC.

On Sunday, September 27, 2015, Mrs. Cassie Bell Cash Hough was called home to join her heavenly father.

She was born to the late Will and Minnie Susie Ella Burch Cash at 7:00 a.m. on February 14, 1917, in Chesterfield, South Carolina. She attended the Chesterfield County public schools. She was married to the late Rev. Richard Lee Hough, Sr., on December 24, 1937, and was the mother of ten children. For three years, they lived in New Port News, Virginia.

She committed her life to Christ at an early age and joined Davidson Grove Baptist Church in 1927. She was a past president of the Home Mission, past Sunday school teacher, a member of the deaconess board, and president of the Mothers’ Board from 1991 until her death. Currently, she was honored as the “Mother” of Davidson Grove Baptist Church. In the community, she was a member of the Home Economics Extension Service for approximately 30 years and the NAACP. She was employed by the Chesterfield County School District for 16 years. Mrs. Hough was a member of Oak Hill Chapter 311 of Order of Eastern Stars since 1955 and served as the Associate Worthy Matron from 1955 – 1985.

As wife (1937 – 1990) to Rev. R. L. Hough, Sr., Mrs. Hough was the first lady of Shady Grove Baptist Church of McBee (1950 – 1956), SC; Flint Ridge Baptist Church of Marshville, NC (1951 – 1956); Chilsom Grove Baptist Church of Lilesville, NC (1954 – 1955); Goodman Creek Baptist Church of Cheraw, SC (1956 – 1958); Mt. Mary Baptist Church of Chesterfield, SC (1968 – 1970); New Hope Baptist Church of Latta, SC (1970 – 1974); Minturn Grove Baptist Church of Dillon, SC (1958 – 1990); and Sandy Grove Baptist Church of Bennettsville, SC (1955 – 1990).

She was “Ma” and “Grandma” to all who knew and loved her. Her favorite pastimes were attending church services and traveling.

Left to cherish memories of “Mrs. Hough” are one son, Mr. Emanuel Lee Hough, Sr., (Lorine) of Chesterfield, SC; five daughters, Dr. Annie Lois Hough-Everage (Eugene) of Oak Hills, CA; Miss Eunice Ann Hough of Hartsville, SC; Dr. Naomi Hough Davis (Norman) of Chesterfield, VA; Ms. Susie Mae Hough of Baltimore, MD; and Mrs. Peggy Myers (Clerow) of Ruby, SC; one brother, Mr. Roosevelt Cash of Baltimore, MD; two sisters, Mrs. Edora Cash McManus of Chesterfield, SC; and Mrs. Willie Mae Cash Jackson of Ruby, SC; a granddaughter, Ms. Sherra Tonette Hough of Hartsville, SC, who was reared in the home; a host of great and great-great grandchildren children; and her church son, Mr. Thomas “Pie” Johnson (Glendora) of Bennettsville, South Carolina.

“Mrs. Hough” was preceded in death by four sons (Richard, Jr.; John Perry, Sr., Jerry, and Willie Lee); three sisters (Idell Cash Nivens, Lucille Cash Jackson, and Alvenia Cash Avery); and two brothers (Lee Belt Cash and Edith Cash). Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield was in charge of arrangements. .

Susan Campbell Winburn McKenna

FLORENCE – Susan Campbell Winburn McKenna, 77, of Florence, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 27, 2015. Born August 31, 1938, in Patrick, SC, she was a daughter of the late William Edward Winburn and Flossie Sydney Turnage Winburn. Susan attended Thornwell School in Clinton and Palmer Business College in Columbia. She retired as secretary from JP Stevens. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw, Susan was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Paulette Lewis Freeman and Walter Chachere “Buddy” Freeman of Columbia; step-son, Ralph Edward “Quito” McKenna Jr. (Teresa) of Destin, FL, step-son-in-law, Dr. Chris Brothers of Santa Fe, NM (husband of the late Kitty Brothers; grandchildren, Chachere, William and Hal Freeman, all of Columbia; step-grandchildren, Heather DiGiacomo, Charlie McKenna of Chicago, IL, Annie Brothers, and Laurel Algoe; sister, Joanne Morgan of Cheraw; sister-in-law, Emma Jean Winburn of Patrick; as well as many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Edward McKenna; brothers, William Francis “Billy” Winburn and John Edward Winburn; a sister, Margaret Winburn Westmoreland; as well as nephews, William Francis Winburn and William Battle Morgan, III.

The service for Mrs. McKenna was held 11 o’clock, Thursday, October 1st, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Rd, Columbia. The family received friends from 5 until 7 o’clock, Wednesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd Ext., Columbia. There was a private inurnment in the church’s Memorial Garden Columbarium.

Daryll Scott Smith

RUBY - Mr. Daryll Scott Smith, age 51, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at his home.

A memorial service was held at 12:00 P.M, Friday, October 2, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Visitation was from 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 PM, Friday prior to service at funeral home.

Interment will be held at a later date in the Smith Family Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born January 7, 1964 in Fort Lauderdale, FL a son of the late James Walter and Sarah Elizabeth Griggs Smith. He was a former employee of Conbraco Industries. Daryll enjoyed riding horses, playing pool, and spending time with his family and friends. He also was a NASCAR fan. In addition to his parents Daryll was also preceded in death by his wife Angie Evans Smith and a brother Tony Smith.

(Brittany) Smith of Pageland, SC; Granddaughter: Rylee Ann Smith; 3 Brothers: Charles “Sonny” (Jo) Smith of Simpsonville, SC, Michael (Ramelle) Smith of Almond, NC and David (Jackie) Smith of Cullowhee, NC; 4 Sisters: Gail (Richard) Lynch of Austin, TX, Debbie Wilkerson of Ruby, SC, Kathy (Chip) Sims of Darlington, SC and Angie Smith of Chesterfield, SC; Also Nieces and Nephews.

L.L. Spears

BENNETTSVILLE - Mr. L.L. Spears, 92, passed away Monday, September 28, 2015 at Cheraw Healthcare.

A graveside service was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Sunset Memorial Park. The family received friends just after the service at the cemetery.

Born, July 17, 1923 in Clio, SC, he was the son of the late Laurie and Maggie Spears. Punk, as his friends knew him, was a resident of Marlboro County for over 92 years. His only surviving sibling is Lily Bender of Fayetteville, N.C. An Army veteran of World War ll, he was an anti-aircraft searchlight operator in Europe including The Battle of the Bulge. He was a local store owner, member of First United Methodist Church, Mason, and proud citizen of Bennettsville, SC.
He would most want to be remembered as Husband to Lois; Father to Alan, of Moncure, N.C., Larry, and daughter in law Kay, of Cheraw; Grandfather to Amy, her husband Patrick Gavin, of Cheverly, Maryland; Will, and his girlfriend Jeannine Armour, of Homer, Alaska; and Great Grandfather to Sara Rose Gavin who filled his final days with pretty photos and loving thoughts.

PATRICK - Mr. Robert E. Taylor, age 83, died Sunday, September 27, 2015.

A funeral service was held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC.

A committal service was held at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Good Shepherd Memorial Park, Boiling Springs, SC.

Visitation was from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2015 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Taylor was born December 14, 1931 in Benson, NC a son of the late Roscoe Taylor and Mallie Jane Taylor VanAtta. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge # 220. Mr. Taylor was a truck driver for over 50 years, and enjoyed farming and selling peaches. His favorite hobbies were playing the harmonica and finding an auction to attend. Robert enjoyed life, and lived it to the fullest. In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his wives, Mildred Therrell Taylor, and June McCraw.

Survivors include Son: Robert “Tiger” (Lisa) Taylor of Salisbury, NC. 2 Daughters: Barbara T. (Kenny) Shaw of Patrick, SC, and Deborah L. (Donald) Hendricks of Patrick, SC; 13 Grandchildren and numerous Great Grandchildren; Brother: Gerald (Josephine) Taylor of Goldsboro, NC; Sister: Darlene (Dave) Sprayberry of Dallas, GA; Special Sister-in-law: Margaret Chisholm of Patrick, SC; Siblings of the Heart: Pete McLamb, Jimmy McLamb, and Vara Lee Fish all of Benson, NC

JEFFERSON - Mr. Billy R. Cline, age 79, died Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Long Branch Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Cline was born April 5, 1936 in Kannapolis, NC a son of the late Paul Barringer Cline and Ada Shinn Cline. He was a dedicated employee of Chesterfield Yarn Mill for 51 years, where he served as former manager. Mr. Cline was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was a faithful member of Long Branch Baptist Church for 56 years, where he served as Deacon, Choir Director, Sunday school teacher, and was also a member of Gideons International. He always loved having a garden in the spring and watching baseball and football. Billy loved God, his church, and his family. In addition to his parents, Billy was also preceded in death by 5 brothers, Robert, James, R.F., Elmer, and Earl Cline; and by 2 sisters, Catherine Wagoner and Margaret Moore.

Survivors include Wife of 57 years: Thelma Miles Cline of the home; 2 Daughters: Judy Cline Deese of Jefferson, SC and Ramona (Matt) Cline Neisler of Pageland, SC; 3 Grandchildren: Jessica (Kyle) Oliver, Whitney (C.J. Cooke) Brown, and Cody Hall; 3 Great Grandchildren: Jayda Allen, Axton Cooke, and Kayden Oliver; 3 Brothers: Lee (Margaret) Cline of Kannapolis, NC, Ray (Hazel) Cline, and Grady (Shirley) Cline both of Concord, NC; 2 Sisters: Annie (Leroy) Keller, and Sue (Bobby) Kanipe both of Kannapolis, NC.

Melinda Kay McLain

ALBEMARLE - Mrs. Melinda Kay McLain, age 53, died Monday, September 21, 2015 at her home following a long and courageous battle against cancer and a major stroke.

A private graveside service was held at the St. John Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Patrick, SC.

Mrs. McLain was born June 23, 1962 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of Mary Rivers McLain and the late Ervin Byrd McLain. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and an honor graduate of Stanley Community College in Albemarle, NC. Melinda enjoyed painting and crafts. She was very creative and artistic.

Survivors include Husband: Charles Ward of Concord, NC; Mother: Mary R. McLain of Patrick, SC; Sister: Betty M. (John) Eskridge of Wallace, SC; Nephew: James “Jim” Eskridge of Wallace, SC; Also: A host of cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you share a meal in memory of Melinda with your family and friends.

Freddie Catoe Soule

MARTINEZ, Ga. - Graveside services for Mrs. Freddie Catoe Soule, 91, who died peacefully on September 19, 2015, were held September 22, 2015. The Reverend William Catoe officiated the burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery in Hartsville with logistical arrangements provided by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Born on September 1, 1924, in Chesterfield County, Mrs Soule, the widow of Major Richard D. Soule, U.S. Army, was a daughter of the late Gus S. Catoe and Elsie Johnson Catoe. Raised in the Middendorf community, she was a 1941 graduate of McBee High School and a 1945 alumna of the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. She served her country as a Second Lieutenant in the Nurse Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard D. Soule, Jr., and her daughter, Lisa Soule Ramey, and her brothers Ralph Catoe, William Catoe, Stanley Catoe and Franklin Catoe; and sisters, Ann Catoe, Ruth C. Gainey, and Helen C. Monnie. Survivors include her son, Roy Scott Soule of Martinez, GA; grandchildren, Chad Faglie, Kevin Faglie; great grandchildren, Jacob Faglie, Caitlyn Faglie, Andrew Faglie, Ryan Jordan Faglie; stepmother, Vena Johnson Catoe; and siblings Shirley C. Sullivan, Jean C. Jordan, Judy C. Branch, Shirley D. Sweatt, Janet D. Pickrell, Richard Catoe, Randy Catoe, Amos Catoe, John Catoe, Rebecca C. Snipes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
