Lois Morris Spears

BENNETTSVILLE – Mrs. Lois Morris Spears, wife of the late L.L. Spears for 67 years, died February 15, 2016.

She was born Alda Lois on January 20, 1924 to C. B. and Laura Adams Morris. She was nicknamed Sissy by her brothers Bryte, Jerry, Harold, Joel, and Jack and outlived them all. Her only sister, Judy Burch, lives in Cheraw, S.C.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a retired bank teller, and homemaker. After working all day she would come home to keep house, cook, and sew. Her ability as a talented seamstress is only surpassed by her skill in the kitchen. She could bake some mean biscuits.

Her memory will be kept alive by her children Alan of Moncure, North Carolina; Larry, and daughter in law Kay of Cheraw, South Carolina; grandchildren Amy and her husband Patrick of Cheverly, Maryland and Will and his girlfriend Jeanine Armour of Homer, Alaska; and great granddaughter Sara Rose Gavin who brought many smiles to her face.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Sunset Memorial Park directed by Burroughs & Cooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at graveside.

Chadwick ‘Chad’ Wright

CHESTERFIELD – Chadwick "Chad" Wright, 38, died on Friday, February 12, 2016. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 2PM from the First Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pageland, SC. He was born on April 13, 1977 in Monroe, NC to Roger and Yolanda Sowell Wright. Upon graduating from Central High School in 1995, he moved to Charlotte, NC where he began his career with UPS. Survivors: his wife, Brittany Wright; a daughter, Carleigh Wright; parents, Roger and Yolanda Wright, Jefferson, SC; two sisters, Christy Kaleena Wright, Columbia, SC and Laura Wright, Charlotte, NC. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge.

Patricia Ann Cash Joines

CHESTERFIELD – Ms. Patricia Ann Cash Joines, 56, died on Saturday, February 06, 2016. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 1PM from the Mt. Airy A.M.E. Zion Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born September 11, 1958 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina to the late Viola C. Watson and James O. McCoy.

Her employment over the years included; Chesterfield Manufacturing in Chesterfield, South Carolina and Hardee's Restaurant in Cheraw, South Carolina. Survivors: her only child, Tricia Ann Joines, Charlotte, NC; a special friend, John B. Little, Chesterfield, SC; four grandchildren, Shaniqua Danielle Joines, Frederick Levon Joines, both of Myrtle Beach, SC, Alesa Rautrice McMillan and Damien Markeyce Joines, both of Charlotte, NC; a great granddaughter, Everr Skye Edwards, Myrtle Beach, SC; seven sisters, Mae Heath (Michael), Cheraw, SC, Frances Wilson (John), Ruby, SC, Icy Douglas (Anthony), Chesterfield, SC, Annie Hames (Fred), Jenie Dogier, Sue McCoy and Shirley Ethridge, all of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Chester Lowery and James McCoy, both of Charlotte, NC. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield is in charge.

Mary Lee Knight

Cheraw – Mary Lee Knight, 71, died Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Born in Altavista, VA she was a daughter of Helen Delores Atkinson Crawford of Laurinburg, NC and the late Carrington Benjamin Crawford, Sr. She was the widow of James “Fidler” Knight. She was a member of Cheraw Family Worship Center. She loved spending time with family, sewing, making crafts, reading her Bible and spending time with God through prayer.

Surviving are her daughters, Pam (Tony) Butler of Cheraw, SC, Natasha (Scott) Kelley of Wadesboro, NC, her mother listed above, sisters, Marie (Terry) Holt of Maxton, NC, Betty Shepherd of Laurinburg, NC, Teresa (Dennis) Turner of Laurinburg, NC, sisters-in-law Teresa Pearce and Judy Crawford both of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Blake (Ashley) Butler, Brooke Butler, Ricky George, Brycen Brower, and great grandchild, Dalton Ratliff.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father listed above, also, her son, Carrington “Heath” Knight, brothers, Henry Crawford, Billy Crawford, C.B. Crawford, Jr., a sister, Hazel Etherton, brothers-in-law, Mark Shepherd, I. and Houston Chavis.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, February 12, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Sante ‘Tino’ Martini

CHERAW – Sante “Tino” Martini, 80, died Monday, February 8, 2016. Born in Montefranco (Province of Terni), Italy, he was the son of the late Sabatino and Domenica Crispoldi Martini. He was a retired engineer, beginning his 30 + years of service with INA Bearing on July 1, 1964 in Germany and transferring in January 1973 to INA in Cheraw as a tool designer. He was promoted to Supervisor of Manufacturing of Engineering in 1985. Mr. Martini was fluent in three languages. “Tino” enjoyed bowling, cycling, Italian sports cars and being with people.

Surviving are his sons, Mauro Martini of Odentahl, Germany, Alessandro Sabatino Martini of Cheraw, SC, a daughter, Dagmar Martini of Nuemberg, Germany and grandchildren, Elys and Leonardo.

The family received friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home. A Rosary was held at 7:00 PM following the visitation.

An entombment service was held at 4:00 PM, Friday, February 12, 2016 in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

Betsy JoAnne Melton

CHERAW – Betsy JoAnne Melton, 44, died, February 7, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of Janet Brock Rivers of Cheraw, SC and the late Tommy Moore, she was the widow of Hubert Ray Melton. She enjoyed gardening and going to yard sales. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her sons, Cody (Kylee) Melton, Aaron (Shareena) Roscoe, Nick (Lacey) Melton all of Cheraw, SC, Brother-in-law, James (Crystal) Edward Melton of Cheraw, SC, Sister-in-law, Wendy (Greg) Walters of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Tanner Melton, Lillie Melton, Mary Roscoe, nephew, Blaine Walters, nieces, Leigh Ann Walters, Kayli Melton and a great nephew, Aiden Walters.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above, also, a grandmother, Mary Brock.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

Evelyn Anderson Moser
RUBY – Mrs. Evelyn Anderson Moser, 86, died on Thursday, February 04, 2016. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 1PM from the Rock Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Ruby, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was born February 16, 1929 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Henry and Cora Gadson Anderson. She was employed with the State Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina and later met her husband, Carlee Moser in Ruby, South Carolina. They were joined together in Holy matrimony on September 4, 1947 and to this union, thirteen children were born. She was an ordained minister of the gospel, an active missionary and co-founder of the Holy Temple Church of the Living God. Survivors: her husband, Reverend Carlee Moser; four daughters; Rosalind Hopkins (Phillip) of Nashville, TN, Hortense Granderson of Marino Valley, CA, Althea Casandra Driver of Atlanta, GA and Deborah Ann Miller of Rock Island, IL; six sons; Larry Moser (Dale) of Richmond, VA, Carlee Moser, Jr. of Columbia, SC, Todd Andrew Moser (Lillie) of Charlotte, NC, Ricky Dean Moser of Ruby, SC, Mark Moser of Chesterfield, SC, and James Carlisle “Sweetie” Moser (Inez) of Cheraw, SC; two brothers, Leon Anderson of Queens, NY and Malverse Anderson of Columbia, SC; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield is in charge. .

Lonnie Legette Parker, Jr.,
BENNETTSVILLE – Mr. Lonnie Legette Parker, Jr., age 72, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 11, 2016 surrounded by his loving family at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at the Bennettsville Church of God with burial following at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M. at the church prior to the funeral service. The Rev. Jerry Lewis and Pastor Ronnie Poston will officiate.

Billy G. Rivers

FAIRVIEW, N.C. – The Reverend Dr. Billy G. Rivers, age 86, formerly of Chesterfield, SC, went home to be with his Lord, on Sunday, February 7, 2016.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery

Visitation was from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 9, 2016 prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Dr. Rivers was born May 19, 1929 in Wadesboro, NC, a son of the late Legette and Maude Hunt Rivers. He was a 1946 graduate of Chesterfield High School. Dr. Rivers also graduated from Wingate College, Furman University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In 1976, he earned his doctorate degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, FL, and served as a Baptist minister and pastor for 50 years, serving First Baptist Church, Hamlet, NC; Pee Dee Baptist Church, Rockingham, NC; Lower Creek Baptist Church, Lenoir, NC; First Baptist Church, Hudson, NC; and as interim pastor of Crest View Baptist Church, Lenoir, NC. He was ordained into the Gospel Ministry in 1947, at the age of 17, by Chesterfield Baptist Church. Dr. Rivers served as moderator of the Caldwell Baptist Association and was a member of the General Board. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, Gardner Webb University, and served on the Board of Ministers for Campbell University. Dr. Rivers served as a Trustee of the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC for many years. He had the distinct honor of attending 9 Presidential Prayer Breakfasts in Washington, D.C. at the invitation of the President of the United States. He enjoyed reading, writing, and authored and published a book, “Return to Reality, America, It’s Not Too Late.” Dr. Rivers will be remembered for his passion and dedication of serving God and helping people. In addition to his parents, Billy was also preceded in death by his brother, Hugh Rivers.

Survivors include Wife of 68 years: Joyce Hancock Rivers of the home; 3 Sons: Bill (Carol) Rivers of Fairview, NC, Sammy (Nancy) Rivers of Ellerbe, NC, and Tim (Paula) Rivers of Greensboro, NC; Daughter: Joy Rivers (Phil) Parsons of Mt. Airy, NC; Also 10 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren and Nieces and Nephews.

Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield, SC is serving the Rivers Family.

Thomas Watt Baker

CHERAW – Thomas Watt Baker, 47, died, Wednesday, February 3, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC he was the son of Thomas Jackson and Sloan Ingram Baker of Cheraw, SC. In high school, Watt was a punter for the Cheraw Braves. He was an All-Conference Football Player and selected for the North-South All-Star game in 1986. He was also a punter for Elon College. Watt enjoyed watching all sports, college and professional.

Surviving is his daughter, Sydney Blaine Baker of Cheraw, SC, his parents listed above, a sister, Kimball (Bill) Baker of Murrells Inlet, SC, nephew, Hunter and niece, Ingram.

A memorial service was held 2:00 PM, Friday, February 5, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw, SC. Inurnment was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family received friends following the committal at the cemetery.

Howard Lucas Blackwell

MCBEE – Funeral services for Howard Lucas Blackwell, age 79, were held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Union United Methodist Church. Rev. Steven Todd and Rev. Charlie Short officiated. Burial was in the Union Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation was held Tuesday 5-7 at the funeral home. Mr. Blackwell was born in McBee a son of the late Lucas Hardy Blackwell and Ithane Mozingo Blackwell Guest. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church, retired from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department after 18 years of service. He served in the US Army for 9 years. He was an avid Golfer and Gamecock Fan. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Glenda Sprouse Blackwell, McBee; two daughters, Johnnie (Bobby) Stafford, Chesterfield and Michell (Corey) LaCross, Lexington; two sons, Stephen (Melissa) Brooks, Lynchburg, VA and Christopher (Kim) Blackwell, Patrick; one sister, Margie Gardner, West Columbia; seven grandchildren, Carson Brooks, Megan LaCross, Brandon LaCross, Lucas Blackwell, Hannah Blackwell, Skylar Brooks and Jason Stafford; two great grandchildren, Jase Stafford and Jenna Stafford. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Tyner. Memorials may be made to the Union United Methodist Church, 4374 Union Church Road, McBee, S.C. 29101, or American Heart Association, 181 East Evans Street, Florence, S.C. 29506 or the American Cancer Association, 128 Stone Mark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210. Norton Funeral Home was honored to service the Blackwell Family.

Brenda Stutzman Evans

CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Brenda Stutzman Evans, age 73, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at The Living Word Ministries, 100 Zoar Road, Chesterfield, SC. Interment followed in the Mt. Croghan Memorial Park.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 3, 2016 prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Evans was born August 10, 1942 in Norfolk, VA, a daughter of the late Lloyd E. and Stella Wengerd Stutzman. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield County DSS with over 30 years of service, and a charter member of The Living Word Ministries. Mrs. Evans loved her Lord, reading and studying His word, and sharing that love with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed working in her yard, and cooking for her family. In addition to her parents, Brenda was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Keith, Harold, and Howard Stutzman.

Survivors include Husband of 52 years: Ralph Evans of the home; 1 Son: Chip Evans of Chesterfield, SC; 1 Daughter: Lani (Pastor Scott) Adams of Chesterfield, SC; 4 Grandchildren: Steven (Brittani) Evans of Andrews AFB, MD, Lawrence Evans of Colorado Springs, CO, Seth Adams and Brendan Adams both of Chesterfield, SC; 3 Great Grandchildren: Brayden Evans, Kian Evans, and Raya Lynn Evans; 3 Brothers: Jim (Ellie) Stutzman of Arlington, WA, William Stutzman of Virginia Beach, VA, and Edward Stutzman of Shallotte, NC; Also: Numerous Nieces and Nephews

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coyt Funderburk, Jr., 50, died on Saturday, January 30, 2016. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 2PM from the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born on March 28, 1965 in Pageland, SC to Coyt Funderburk, Sr. and the late Allen Robinson Funderburk. Coyt was a carpet installer with the family business and later moved to Charlotte, N.C., where he continued working in the carpet industry. Survivors: his father, Coyt Funderburk, Sr., Pageland, SC; two brothers, Pete Funderburk (Carrie), Charlotte, NC and Carvin Funderburk, Charlotte, NC;. seven sisters, Pauline Melton (Randolph), Pageland, SC, Celeste McManus (Clinton), Charlotte, NC, Brenda Sowell, Pageland, SC, Rena Funderburk, Pageland, SC; Debra Funderburk, Pageland, SC, Nancy Mungo (Hazel), Bronx, NY and Dianne Funderburk (Dennis), Pageland, SC. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge. .

Lee Thomas Johnson

CHESTERFIELD – Lee Thomas Johnson, 83, died on Monday, January 25, 2016. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 2PM from the Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born December 2, 1932 in Chesterfield, SC to the late Willie J. Johnson and Barzilla Pegues Johnson. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Narciss Evans Johnson. He was a diligent and hard worker throughout his life, spending time working in farming, construction and lawn care. He was employed for years with several local funeral homes, including Flemming Funeral Home of Chesterfield, SC, and Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: two sisters, Ruby J. Lee, Albemarle, NC and Dorothy J. Singletary, Denver, CO; sister-in-law, Sarah H. Johnson, Charlotte, NC; step-son, Bobby L. “Buster” Watson, Kershaw, SC; two special nephews, Thomas Johnson, Charlotte, NC and Lester Johnson, Ruby, SC; a companion, Nezzie N. Bennett, Chesterfield, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield was in charge.

Matthew Sherwood Pearce

FLORENCE - Matthew Sherwood Pearce, 37, of Florence, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016.

Mr. Pearce was born in Lexington, SC, a son of Elizabeth Abernathy Pearce and the late George Michael Pearce. He was a teacher at Alfred Rush Academy. Mr. Pearce was named Teacher Of The Year twice during his career and was a member of the Faculty Advisory Committee of Florence School District 1.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Megan Ellen Mehaffy Pearce, and sister, Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Drake (Mark) of Cary, NC.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Nancy Guy Pearce of Cheraw, SC and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Abernathy of Gaffney, SC.

A Memorial Service was held at 3:00 on Saturday, February 6, 2016, in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel in Florence.

Family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Darlington County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551.
