Earle Stanley Pelfrey

CHERAW – Mr. Earle Stanley Pelfrey, age 66, entered into rest on Friday, January 29, 2016 surrounded by his family and friends.
A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with Masonic rites followed in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 1:00 – 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 2, 2016 prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Pelfrey was born February 10, 1949 in Cheraw, SC a son of the late Martin Van Buren Pelfrey and Katye Stanley Pelfrey. He was a retired employee of Ina Bearing and a member of Westside Baptist Church. Mr. Pelfrey was also a member of the Cheraw Masonic Lodge # 15 and was a Shriner of the Moroccan Temple. Earle enjoyed following all sports, playing golf, and was an avid car enthusiast. He enjoyed drag strip racing, attending car shows, and working on his 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Earle had a heart for ALL animals, and was quick to rescue them, providing them with a second chance at life. He was a true people person who never met a stranger, and was a friend to all.
Survivors include Wife of 34 years: Jane G. Pelfrey of the home; 1 Daughter: Rebecca L. (Shane) Jones of Chesterfield, SC; 4 Brothers: William “Butch” (Jackie) Pelfrey of Twentynine Palms, CA, John (Karen) Pelfrey, Michael (Cathy) Pelfrey both of Cheraw, SC, and Robert (Lynette) Pelfrey of Jacksonville, FL; Nephews: Joseph Pelfrey, Joshua Pelfrey, Brandon Pelfrey, Tyler Pelfrey, Nolan Pelfrey, and Ethan Pelfrey; and Niece: Brittany Pelfrey
The family would like to express their gratitude and love to the staff of McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence, SC, CVICU Unit for the love and care shown to Mr. Pelfrey during his illness.

Minnie Beulah Sinclair

PAGELAND – Minnie Beulah Sinclair, 56, died on Friday, January 29, 2016. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 2PM from the Oro United Methodist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born in Pageland, SC on September 5, 1959 to the late Chalmers David Lowery and Essie Mae Watts Lowery. Minnie was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1977. She was employed with Cinderella Knitting Company for 18 years. Minnie was currently employed with Subway, Inc. Survivors: five daughters: Shekita Covington (Dewayne) Pageland, SC, Kamaria Sinclair, Bowie, MD, Khalilah Sinclair, Jalesia Lowery, all of Pageland, SC, and Imani Lowery, of the home; eight grandchildren: Aniya, Jaden, Ja’Cari, My’Keria, Jeziah, Joelle, Jashir, and Ja’Kalyn; two sisters: Deborah Lowery Williams, Dale City, VA and Dianne Lowery Morgan, Washington, DC; two brothers: David Lowery (Linda), Parkersburg, WV; and Chalmers D. Lowery II (Lorie), Bowie, MD. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge.

Clyde S. ‘Nicky’ Watson Sr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Clyde S. “Nicky” Watson, Sr., age 79, died Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at his home.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 5, 2016, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Visitation followed the committal service at St. Paul United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Mr. Watson was born April 27, 1936, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late J. Clyde and Sallie Sowell Watson. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and a former member of the S.C. Army National Guard. Mr. Watson was the owner and operator of Watson Brothers Appliance Store, a family-owned business founded in 1901. He was a former member of both the Chesterfield Volunteer Fire Department and the Chesterfield Rescue Squad. Mr. Watson also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Sandhill Telephone Cooperative for the past 29 years. Through the years Nicky had a number of interests, including aviation, history, gardening, and watching NFL football games. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and a USC Gamecock fan.

Survivors include Wife of 61 years: Faye Jones Watson of the home; 1 Son: Clyde S. (Jayne) Watson, Jr. of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Daughters: Joye Watson (Rory) Cox of Chesterfield, SC and Nikki Watson (Steve) Greif of Cornelius, NC; 5 Grandchildren: Christina Cox, Kevin Cox, Sarah Ruth (Brandon) Owens, Laney Greif, and Sarah Greif; 1 Brother: Gene (Jewell) Watson of Chesterfield, SC; Also: a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 W. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Rosalie Ann Wise

CHESTERFIELD – Rosalie Ann Wise, 68, died Thursday, February 04, 2016. Born in Geneva, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Emmett and Theresa Pry and the widow of Paul Wise. Ms. Wise was a nurse, enjoyed helping others and being a caretaker. She also enjoyed reading.

Surviving are a son, Steve (Kay) Wise of Chesterfield, SC, a daughter, Criket McCoy of Coral Springs, FL, a sister, Toni Fox of Missouri, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, her sisters, Theresa Fordham and Juanita Salgado.

The family is receiving friends at the residence of Steve and Kay Wise, 511 Vaughn Lane, Chesterfield, SC.

Joe Mundy

CHESTERFIELD – Joe Mundy, 67, died on January 19, 2016. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 2PM from the St. James A.M.E. Zion Church Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born on July 14, 1948 in Mecklenburg County, NC to the late Jethro Mundy and Mattie McNeely Mundy. Joe was educated in the Mecklenburg County Schools and later worked in the commercial printing business until he retired from PBM Graphics after more than 35 cumulative years of service. Survivors: his wife, Mary E. Mundy; two sons, Jeffrey E. White of Troutman, NC and Tracy A. White of Davidson, NC; two daughters, Tara T. Mundy (Kenji) of Joint Base Andrews, MD and Sabrina M. Nichols of Chesterfield, SC; a nephew raised as a son, Gregory A. Dunkley of Alexandria, VA; eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Davis (Jerry) of Mooresville, NC, Shirley Copeland (Melvin) of Miami, FL, Phyllis McCain (Earl) of Mooresville, NC and Roberta Mundy of Davidson, NC; three brothers, James McNeely (Sandra) of Cornelius, NC, Jerry Mundy (Janice) of Charlotte, N.C. and Dale Mundy (Shirley) of Newport News, VA. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield was in charge.

Albert Stuart Nickles Jr.

CHERAW – The Reverend Albert Stuart Nickles, Jr. 77, died January 26, 2016. Born in Hodges, SC he was the son of the late Albert Stuart Nickles, Sr. and Ruby Elvera Matthews Nickles. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School, Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary. Rev. Nickles served the congregations of Presbyterian churches in Westminster/Richland, Barnwell, Cheraw, SC and Montgomery, AL.

His survivors include, Virginia “Ginny” F. Nickles of Cheraw, SC, a son, A. Stuart Nickles, III (Nickie) of Lexington, SC, a daughter, Virginia “Ginger” Sloop (Gray, III) of The Woodlands, TX, grandchildren, John and Alex Nickles, and Taylor and Grayson Sloop.

Reverend Nickles was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a sister, Nancy N. Cobb.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 30, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw, SC. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.

Virginia Oliver

GAFFNEY – Florence Virginia Redmond Oliver, 90, formerly of Cheraw, SC, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Peachtree Centre.

Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of Franklin Dewey Redmond and Florence Virginia Billups Redmond. She was retired from Hornwood Textiles, enjoyed reading and sewing and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Melanie Cutchin and husband, Dr. Richard of Gaffney; three brothers, Robert Redmond of Lilesville, NC, Tommy Redmond and wife, Frances of Winston Salem, NC and Graham Redmond of Fort Lauderdale, FL; ten grandchildren, Sierra Burgin and husband, Derick, Richard Lee Cutchin, Jordan David Cutchin, Jenny Dutton, Lori Dutton, Adam Paul Oliver, Donnie Oliver, Jr., Michelle Oliver Murphy, Rebecca Oliver and Presley Oliver; thirteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by two sons, Bennie Oliver and Donnie Oliver; and a daughter, Beverly Dutton.

The family received friends from 3:00 until 4:00 PM on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Blakely Funeral Home. Memorial services immediately followed at 4:00 PM in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tommy Huddleston officiating.

Thomas ‘Preacher Tom’ Rutan

CHESTERFIELD - Reverend Thomas “Preacher Tom” Rutan, age 72, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 27, 2016.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, January 31, 2016, at Pine Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery

Visitation was from 4:00–6:00 P.M. Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Pine Grove Baptist Church, 293 Zoar Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Reverend Rutan was born September 18, 1943, in Buffalo, West Virginia, a son of the late Herman Cecil Rutan and Oma Christine Cobb Rutan. He was a graduate of Richwood High School and Berkshire Christian College and served as a minister of The Gospel for the past 50 years. Tom pastored churches in Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and South Carolina. He was currently serving Chesterfield Baptist Church as interim pastor. Reverend Rutan was a member, former pastor, and Pastor Emeritus of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was also a former Trustee of the South Carolina Baptist Ministry for the Aging, and diligently worked to raise financial support for Bethea Retirement Communtiy and the Martha Franks Retirement Center. “Preacher Tom” was also a member and former moderator of the Chesterfield Baptist Association. Tom also had served as a school teacher and coach. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and training dogs and horses. Tom carried many young people on their first hunting and fishing trip. Preacher Tom was a true servant of God and was a witness of God’s love to everyone he met. In addition to his parent, Rev. Rutan was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Charles and Neil Rutan, and by a great grandson, C. J. Gillespie.

Survivors include Wife of 53 years: Rose Ann Shinkle Rutan of the home; 2 Sons: Scott Rutan of Chesterfield, SC and Stephen (Sandi) Rutan of Myrtle Beach, SC; Brother: Randy (Lois) Rutan of Berkley Springs, WV; Sister: Marilyn Rutan (Jim) Taylor of Delaware, OH; Also 6 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Chesterfield County Relay for Life, c/o Kathy Treadaway, 275 Forest Road, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Christine T. Brewer

Mrs. Christine T. Brewer, age 91, widow of Clyde L. Brewer, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2016 after a lengthy illness. A private graveside service will be held at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery where she will be interred beside her beloved husband and infant son. Mr. Phillip Caulder will conduct the service.

Mrs. Brewer was the daughter of the late Alfred and Aggie Timmons and the last surviving child of a family of eight siblings. She was a homemaker and seamstress and was well known for her wonderful desserts. As a member of Oakland Baptist Church, she served numerous years as the Ladies Adult Sunday School teacher.

Surviving are her three daughters, Gen Scott of Columbia, SC, Ellen Tucker (Dean) of Chesterfield, SC, and Clara Ratliff (Charlie) of Charleston, SC along with five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Instead of a formal visitation, the Family invites you to stop by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home on Sunday, January 24, 2016 between the hours of 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM and spend a few minutes remembering a favorite time you shared together.

Mildred Claire ‘Millie’ Baker Campbell
CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Mildred Claire “Millie” Baker Campbell, age 70, died Sunday, January 10, 2016.

A funeral service was held 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Visitation was from 2:30 –4:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 12, 2016 prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Campbell was born March 1, 1945 in Florence, SC, the daughter of the late Henry Earl Baker and Mildred Louise “Dutch” Mulloy Baker, and the granddaughter of the late Annie Redfearn Mulloy. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, Class of 1963, and a retired office clerk with Delta Mills with over 40 years of service. Millie was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Her hobbies included reading, puzzles, watching ballgames, and making bows. Millie loved the holidays. She enjoyed giving gifts during Christmas, having Easter egg hunts for the kids, and dressing up for Halloween. Her favorite thing was being “MiMi” to those special children in her life. In addition to her parents, Millie was also preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy Baker and Jimmy Baker.

Survivors include Husband: Tommy D. Campbell of the home; Godchildren: Marla Jacobs, and her son, Johnny Bittle; Chelza White Leviner and her children, Dakota, Kieran, and Kyndall; Douglass Ross Campbell and Clay Demby Campbell; Special Friend: Margie Nell Jacobs;

Special Nieces and Nephews: Stacia Baker, Jeb Baker, Jennifer Baker Sizemore, and David Baker; Special Great Niece and namesake: Sadie Claire; Special Cousins: Ann Munn and Dot Watanabe; Sister-in-law: Goldia C. Johnson.

Deborah Jean Roller Cohoon

WALLACE – Deborah Jean Roller Cohoon, 60, died Monday, January 18, 2016. Born in Laurinburg, NC, she was a daughter of Sarah McMillian Roller and the late John Roller, Jr. She was a foster parent, Pastor of Mission of Faith Church, and teacher at Mission of Faith School. Mrs. Cohoon enjoyed sewing, helping people, and taking care of children. She was a devoted wife and mother that loved her family and her Lord.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Rodney Eugene Cohoon, of the home, a son, Isaiah Oxendine / Cohoon, of the home, a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Cohoon Sanchez (Joaquin) of Wallace, SC, her mother listed above, a brother, Aldon Roller (Carla) of Wallace, SC, sisters, Sylvia Previtte (Gerald) of Wallace, SC, Dorothy Teal (Jimmie) of Wallace, SC, Sandra Hall (Robert) of Wallace, SC, grandchildren, Christian Amor Sanchez, Josue Francisco Sanchez, Jeylan Elizabeth Sanchez, special foster children in her life, Johnathon, Douglas, Joseph, Harold, Victoria, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father listed above and a sister, Linda Roller.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Mission of Faith Church, Wallace, SC. A funeral service was held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 20, 2016.

Arline M. Courtney

PAGELAND – Mrs. Arline M. Courtney, 83, of Pageland, South Carolina passed away peacefully at her home and went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 19, 2016.

Arline was born on January 31, 1932 in Mt. Croghan, South Carolina to the late Benton Crump and Sadie Watts Maner. She was preceded in death by her son, Dwight Edwin (Eddie) Courtney, Jr., and her Brothers, Roy Carson and Henry Maner.

She is survived by her loving Husband of 63 years, Dwight E. Courtney, Sr.; Three children, Robbin (Al) Usher of Pageland, SC, Chris (Carol) Courtney of Marshville, NC and Tracy (Sharon) Courtney of Walterboro, SC, Four Grandchildren, Courtney (Chris) Brown of Pageland, SC, Trent (Jerica) Usher of Pageland, SC, Justin (Blair) Courtney of Pageland, SC and Josh (Emily) Courtney of Jefferson, SC, Four Great Grandchildren, Ali Grace Brown of Pageland, SC, Major Usher of Pageland, SC, Captain Usher of Pageland, SC and LeeJon Tadlock of Marshville, NC and a Sister, Tona Carnes of Pageland, SC.

Arline was a devoted Christian who loved her family and her church, High Point Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the choir and served in various other capacities within the church, including Prime Timers and Women’s Missionary Union. She especially enjoyed working with the children during Vacation Bible School. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.

Arline’s family would like to express special thanks to Chesterfield County Hospice and Help at Home Hartsville for their dedicated service and kindness throughout Arline’s illness.

The family received visitors at the High Point Family Life Center on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 1:30 – 2:30 PM

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at High Point Baptist Church with Pastor Rodney Nicholson, Pastor Don Rhyne and Pastor Ernest Mungo officiating. The burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Dr. Joel Dale officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests Memorial Contributions be sent to Hospice of Chesterfield County, PO Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
