CHERAW – Mary "Dean" Johnson Drake, 58, died on Thursday, January 7, 2016. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 2PM from the Charity Community Church of Christ, Cheraw SC. Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. She was the daughter of Mary Rivers Johnson and the late Chester “Head” Johnson, born on February 24, 1957 in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: husband, Thomas S. Drake, Jr., Baltimore, MD; daughter, Tammara D. Drake, Cheraw, SC; step-son, Thurman Drake, Baltimore, MD; two granddaughters, Shamiyah Melton and Tykira McCaskill; a grandson, Antonio McCaskill all of Cheraw SC; mother, Mary Johnson, Chesterfield, SC; sister, Susan (Terry) Powe, Cheraw, SC; five brothers, Donnie (Dianne) Rivers, Roy Chester (Shirley) Johnson, Allen (Rita) Johnson all of Chesterfield, SC, Mitchell (Beverly) Johnson, Lilesville, NC and Marvin (Sharon) Johnson, Hartsville, SC. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield is in charge. .

Myrtle Beach - James Mark Witherspoon, Sr. 55, died Friday, January 23, 2016. Plans to be announced by Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Johnnie Cole

GREENVILLE – Mrs. Johnnie Cole, 83, formerly of Cheraw, SC, died Saturday, January 9, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Julia Herndon Thompson. Mrs. Cole was the widow of C. Elbert Cole. She was formerly a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw, SC and currently attended Trinity Presbyterian Church in Traveler’s Rest, SC. Mrs. Cole enjoyed spending time with her family, so much so, that she retired early in life from Southern Weaving in order to take care of her mother, when her health began to decline. She would often take her mother on car rides into the mountains and take her fishing. Mrs. Cole supported her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all that they were involved in, always spending time with each of them. She enjoyed growing flowers and spending time taking care of her yard as well. Mrs. Cole was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and attended Winthrop Training School.

Mrs. Cole is survived by her sons, Robert Cole of Greenville, SC, and Frank Lynn Cole of Traveler’s Rest, SC, a daughter, Julie Cole of Greenville, SC, a brother, John Thompson (Emma) of Dalzell, SC, a sister, Mattie Belk of Rock Hill, SC, 3 grandchildren, Robbie Cole, Zachary Cole and Ethan Cole and 2 great-grandchildren, Leah Cole and Tripp Cole.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Old Saint David’s Church in Cheraw, SC.

The family received friends starting at 10:30 AM before the funeral service.

Kiser Funeral Home is assisting the Cole family.

Paul Lawrence Godwin Jr.

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND – Paul Lawrence Godwin, Jr. 37, died Sunday, January 10, 2016. Paul had recently moved back to Sullivan's Island to be closer to his family and friends. At the time of his homegoing, he was living at the home of his beloved cousin, Juleanne Judy Bryan. Born in Fort Worth, TX he was the son of Laura Anne Dennis Godwin of Lancaster, SC and Paul Lawrence Godwin, Sr. (Inessa) of Cheraw, SC.

He was active in Boy Scouts as a child, He was a carpenter and recently talked about Jesus being a carpenter and how cool that was that they shared the same kind of job. He was the most talented musician who wrote and played songs. He was an artist and drew and painted and designed furniture. He had a successful career doing so in New York City, where he lived for 10 years.

Surviving are his parents listed above, sisters, Anne Elizabeth Godwin of Lancaster, SC, Laura Katherine Godwin of Charlotte, NC, Maternal grandmother, Gertrude Cauthen Dennis of Lancaster, also many uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond L. Dennis and paternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Winston Y. Godwin, Sr.

The family received friends 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 16, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 16, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Farish Watlington Justice

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Farish Watlington Justice, widow of John William Justice, Jr., passed away peacefully on November 24th, 2015 at Penick Village in Southern Pines, N.C. at the age of 90. She was born and raised in Caswell County, N.C. and graduated from Cobb Memorial High School where she was voted "Best All Around Girl" and was captain of the basketball team. Farish graduated from Peace College in Raleigh, N.C. in 1945 and worked in the State Capitol as a secretary for Thad Eure, the Secretary of State. She and John were married in 1951 and raised their two children, Anne and Johnny, in Camden and Cheraw, S.C. and at their vacation home on Pawley's Island, S.C. They then moved to Siler City, N.C. and back to Cheraw before retiring to Penick Village in 2002.
Farish was active in Grace Episcopal Church in Camden, St. David's Episcopal Church in Cheraw and Siler City United Methodist Church. She was an avid tennis and bridge player and pianist and a lifelong University of North Carolina basketball fan. She was known to unplug her phone when Tarheel basketball games and professional tennis tournaments were being televised.
She is survived by her two children, Anne Farish Justice of Georgetown, S.C. and John William Justice, III (Donna) of Fernandina Beach, FL and Sea Island, GA, two grandsons, John William Justice, IV (Barbara) and Samford Watlington Justice all of Savannah, GA, two sisters, Mary Lily Watlington of Ruffin, N.C. and Carolyn Watlington Fagan of Laurens, S.C., two nieces, Betsey Reed Mayhew (Jack) of West Tisbury, MA and Kay Reed Carey (Lee) of Virginia Beach, VA and one nephew, Roy Otho Fagan (Mary) of Reidsville, N.C. and five great-nieces.
A small family graveside service held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Old St. David's Cemetery in Cheraw, S.C. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorials be made to the Old St. David's Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 1196, Cheraw, S.C. 29520.

Mark Martin

CHESTERFIELD – Mark Martin, 38, died on Monday, January 11, 2016. Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at 2PM from the Chesterfield Ruby Middle School Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Foundry Hill Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. He was the son of Sam W. Martin and the late Joann Griffith Martin born in New Rochelle, NY on November 11, 1977. Mark graduated from Chesterfield High School and was currently employed with CM Tucker Lumber Company. Survivors: his grandmother, Audrey Griffith, Chesterfield, SC; a sister, Keisha Martin, Chesterfield, SC; four nieces and two nephews. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield is in charge. .

Molly Frances Melton

WALLACE - Molly Frances Melton, 73, died Saturday, January, 9, 2016. Born in Shoals, NC, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Jenny Edwards Hauser. Mrs. Melton was the widow of Redmond Melton, Sr. She enjoyed spending time with her family, talking to friends, and watching TV.

Surviving are her daughters Wanda Melton of Wallace, SC, and Patricia McRae of Clayton, NC, grandchildren, Alen, Molley, Alexis, and Jennifer, great-grandchildren, Hailey, Jazmine, and Junior, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above, and a son Redmond Melton, Jr.

A memorial service was held at 4:00 PM, Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home Chapel, Cheraw, SC.

Ola B. Polson

PATRICK – Mrs. Ola B. Polson, age 81, went home to be with her Lord, Thursday, January 14, 2016. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Patrick Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the Patrick Cemetery.

The family will receive friends anytime at the home of Alvin and Mary Tolson.

Mrs. Polson was born February 13, 1934 in Patrick, SC a daughter of the late William Jasper Tucker and Emma Tucker. She was a retired employee of Hartsville Manufacturing and attended Patrick Presbyterian Church. Her favorite pastimes were raking leaves, talking on her cell phone to friends, and taking trips to the beach. She loved her family, and enjoyed hosting “family night” every Sunday evening at her home. Mrs. Polson was affectionately known as the “Community Mother” to all the children in Patrick. In addition to her parents, Ola was also preceded in death by her husband, Belton E. Polson; infant son, John Preston Polson; daughter, Evelyn Polson Walters; daughter-in-law, Sheila Polson; 2 brothers, W.T., and Willis Tucker; 2 sisters, Betty O’Neal and Carolyn Tucker; grandson, Joseph Walters; and a great granddaughter, Alaina Polson.

Survivors include 4 Sons: William (Bonnie) Polson of Patrick, SC, John Polson of Hartsville, SC, Jimmy (Sherry) Polson, and Wendell “Scotty” (Melody) Walters both of Patrick, SC; 1 Daughter: Mary (Alvin) Tolson of Patrick, SC; 1 Brother: Earl Tucker of Polkton, NC; 3 Sisters: Helen (Kenneth) Freeman of Patrick, SC, Janie (Ray) Fratus of Cheraw, SC, and Debbie Tucker of Patrick, SC; Grandchildren: Jerry (Tracy) Lundy, Adam Lundy, and William Jacob Polson all of Patrick, SC, Brandy (Ray) Hemby and Justin (Charlotte) Polson both of Hartsville, SC, Deana Price, Jamie (Jodie) Polson both of Patrick, SC, Holly (Clint) Patterson of Rock Hill, SC, Joshua Tolson of Patrick, SC, Evelyn Nicole “Nikki” (Brandon) Tolson, and Destiny Faith Brown both of Cheraw, SC, and Jonathan (Christine) Cook of Chesterfield, SC; 15 Great Grandchildren; Also Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Karl Lavon ‘Yogi’ Quick

WALLACE – Karl Lavon “Yogi” Quick, 56, died Tuesday, January 13, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of Allene Haire Quick and the late Luther Quick. Mr. Quick enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing, and was member of the Riverdale Hunting Club.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Quick of the home, daughters, Jennifer Quick, and Abby Quick, his son, Ryan Quick, his mother, Allene Quick, brothers, Mike Quick and Dean Quick, all of Wallace, SC and a sister Darlene Cottingham of Cheraw, SC.

He is preceded in death by his father listed above.

The family received friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, January 15, 2016 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 16, 2016 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC.

Burial followed the service in the church cemetery.

Verona ‘Ronnie’ Hammers Sides

BENNETTSVILLE – Mrs. Verona "Ronnie" Hammers Sides, 79, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Morrell Nursing Center in Hartsville.

Born February 22, 1936 in Poteau, OK, she was a daughter of the late James Emmett and Marie Beasley Hammers. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the ladies Bible study. Mrs. Ronnie enjoyed sewing, working in her yard, puzzles, and especially spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond C. Sides, Jr.; a son, Raymond C. Sides, III; brother, James Hammer, Jr., and sister, Donna Arena.

Surviving are: sons, Randy Sides (Anne) of Fayetteville, NC and Rusty Sides (Janet), of Bennettsville; daughter, Debbie Watson (Harold), of Cheraw; grandchildren, Raymond Sides (Jessica), Luke Sides, Justin Sides, Ashley Locklear (David), Jeremy Shuford (Jessica), Patrick Shuford, Adam Watson (Mallory) and Megan Watson; great grandchild, Seth Watson.

Services were held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Christ United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Officiated by the Rev. Wade Everett. Visitation was held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Burroughs & Cooper Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 75, Bennettsville, SC 29512 or to a Hospice of One's Choice.

William David Threadgill

CHERAW – William David Threadgill, 79, died Thursday, January 14, 2016. Born in Chesterfield, SC, he was a son of the late Henry Cannie and Ola Estelle Threadgill. He was the widower of Annie Ruth Ray Threadgill. Mr. Threadgill was a member of Cheraw Church of God and retired from Delta Mills after 42 years of employment. He enjoyed fishing, beekeeping, gardening, playing music and singing, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Oree McDonald Threadgill of the home, sons, Tony K. Threadgill (Pamela) of Franklin, TN, and D. Heath Threadgill of Bennettsville, SC, also, Mackie McCormick of Cheraw, SC, who was like a son, daughters, Andrea DuBose of Hartsville, SC, Keri Dickson of Fayetteville, NC, and Melissa Oliver (Reggie) of Ruby, SC, a brother, Frank Threadgill of Cheraw, SC, and a sister, Christine McPherson of Cheraw, SC and nine grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by relatives listed above, brothers, Nelson Threadgill, and Grady Threadgill, sisters, Mary Ruth Brock, and Pauline Oakley and his favorite dog Rascal.

Memorials may be made to Cheraw Church of God, 100 Pecan Orchard Road, Cheraw, SC 29520.

The family received friends at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Cheraw Church of God.

A funeral service followed at 12:00 Noon, at Cheraw Church of God.

Burial followed the service at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Robert "Bobby" Campbell, Sr.
Apr 3, 1935 - Nov 3, 2014

Robert Campbell, Sr., son of the late Mr. Eddie Campbell, Sr., and Mrs. Rosa Chisolm Campbell, was born on April 3, 1935 in Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. He departed this life on Monday, November 3, 2014.

Robert, Sr., affectionately called "Bobby",ť attended the public schools of Charleston County and was employed by Thomas & Howard Company, Unicon Cement and Tri-County Concrete.

Robert became a member of Salem Presbyterian Church, USA in the early 80s under the pastorate of Reverend Robert Capers. He served on the usher's board and as a grounds keeper of the church and the cemetery until his relocation to Columbia, SC.

Robert past time activities included, fishing, shrimping, hunting and landscaping.

His utmost pleasure was acquisition and refurbishing mobile homes, thus providing affordable and adequate living for those less fortunate.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor Campbell; daughter, Rosemary Campbell-Pinckney; grandson, baby Victor Campbell; two brothers, Francis and Edward, and three sisters, Viola, Mary and Sadie.

Robert was joined in holy matrimony to the late Eleanor Robinson-Campbell on August 31, 1958. God blessed this union with five children, Martha Campbell-White of Ladson, SC, Robert Campbell, Jr., of Wadmalaw Island, SC, Elder Richarde E. (Cederia) Campbell of Columbia, SC, and Dwayne L. (Shari Walker) Campbell of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Rosaile Heyward of Wadmalaw Island, SC; ten grandchildren, Tarikia “Kia” White, Thomas "Derral"ť White, Robert "Noddy"ť Campbell, Joshua "Josh"ť Campbell, Koya Campbell, Darnell Pinckney, Jeremy Pinckney, Zion Campbell, Nicholas "Nick"ť Campbell and Michael Campbell; six great-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law, Ruthie Middleton and Lorraine Mack of Wadmalaw Island, SC, Maybelle Robinson and Edith Robinson of Charleston, SC, Sarah Jordan and Ida (Marion) Scott of Bronx, NY; two brothers-in-law, George Robinson of Wadmalaw Island, SC, and Benjamin Robinson of Memphis, TN; former son-in-law, Thomas White of Charleston, SC; former daughter-in-law, Beatrice B. Campbell of Wadmalaw Island, SC; friend and attendant, Vickie Gadsden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, community family and friends who all will miss him dearly.
