Edith ‘Edie’ Locklear Boswell

RUBY - Mrs. Edith “Edie” Locklear Boswell, age 67, of Ruby, SC, died Thursday, May 12, 2016 at her home.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 P.M., Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Ruby Baptist Church, Ruby, SC. Interment followed in the Ruby Cemetery, Ruby, SC.

Visitation was from 3:00 – 4:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Boswell was born July 14, 1948, in Bennettsville, SC, a daughter of the late Willie and Evelyn Jacobs Locklear. She was a retired administrative assistant with Bo-Buck Mills and a member of Ruby Baptist Church. Edie enjoyed cooking, painting pictures, and collecting crystal. In addition to her parents, Edie was also preceded in death by a brother, Willie Almond Locklear.

Survivors include Husband: Alvin L. “Skeeter” Boswell of the home; Daughter: Misty (Daniel) Watson of Summerville, SC; Son: Warren (Susie) Boswell of Ruby, SC; 4 Grandchildren: Bella-Claire and Jackson Tate Watson; Zach and Nick Boswell; 1 Brother: Bobby Locklear of Clio, SC; and 1 Sister: Gertrude Treadaway of Clio, SC.

Wilson Manuel Brown

Wilson Manuel Brown, 74, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

Wilson was born November 29, 1941, in Patrick, SC to the late William Manuel and Eliza Ingram Brown. He was a great man and loved spending time with his family. He watched NASCAR faithfully and always had a joke to share. Making people laugh came naturally to him. Although he loved to laugh, he was not stranger to hard work. He was employed with Bryant Durham Electric for 25 years.

Funeral Service were held Friday, May 13, 2016 at 2pm in the chapel at McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 US HWY 70 Business West, Clayton, NC 27520. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2PM prior to the funeral. Interment will be at Patrick Cemetery, in Patrick, SC.

The family would like to thank the staff at Transitions Hospice, especially Cheryl Bradford, RN, Lauren DeVan, RN, Paula Womack, SCC, and Leeanne Poole, NP.

He is survived by his wife, Paulette Joyce Wigal Brown; sons, Wilson “Bucky” Manuel Brown, Jr. and wife, Lisa, and William Edward “Eddie” Brown; stepsons, Jimmy Neal Mann and Jamie Lee Mann; grandchildren, Trey Jordan Mann, Jessi Owen, Skylar Mann, Sebastian Mann, and Haley Amber Owen; sisters, Elvia Pierce and Patricia Ray; and brother Lester “Bobo” Hodge. In addition to his parents, Wilson was preceded in death by his daughter, B.G.; siblings, Neal Brown, Otis Ingram, Ruby Boone, Marion Brown, Helen Parker, Agnes Brown, and Ellen Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Transitions Hospice, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Mae Belle ‘Pat’ Crowley

PATRICK - Mrs. Mae Belle “Pat” Crowley, age 68, died Monday, May 2, 2016.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 PM, Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Bethel United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crowley was born January 15, 1948, in Patrick, SC, a daughter of the late Enoch and Julia Mae Edwards O’Neal. She was a loving wife and mother and a former member of the Bay Springs Fire Dept. Pat was also a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Pat was also preceded in death by her husband, Newsom E. Crowley, 2 brothers, Bill and Joe O’Neal and by 5 sisters, Annie Sue Gainey, Mary Catherine Perdue, Sally J. Perdue, Geneva “Tom” Lawson, and Dorothy Chapman.

Survivors include 1 Son: Albert Crowley of Patrick, SC; 1 Brother: Enoch O’Neal, Jr. of Patrick, SC; 2 Brothers-in-law: John Perdue of Patrick, SC and Henry Chapman of Society Hill, SC; Special Care Giver: Stacey Gooden of Patrick, SC; Nieces and Nephews; and her Dog, “Daisey.”

Randel Lee ‘Cotton’ Deese

PAGELAND - Mr. Randel Lee “Cotton” Deese, age 56, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at his home.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 13, 2016, at Providence Baptist Church Family Life Center, Pageland, SC. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. Deese was born June 9, 1959 in Pageland, SC a son of Betty Jordan Deese Wilbanks and the late Basel Lee Deese. He was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1977 and a telecommunications specialist with North State Communications. Mr. Deese was a member of Zion UMC. Cotton enjoyed camping and trips to the mountains. He also was an avid Carolina Gamecocks fan and enjoyed NASCAR and football.

Survivors include Wife of 30 years: Tracy Hendrix Deese of the home; Son: Toby Deese of Pageland, SC; Daughter: Courtney Deese and fiancé Gregory Laughlin of Myrtle Beach, SC;

Granddaughter: Alia Laughlin of Myrtle Beach, SC; Mother: Betty J. Wilbanks of Pageland, SC; and Dog: Sandi-Bug.

Robert Edward Fuller

Robert Edward Fuller, son of Jannie Watson Fuller and Evans (Buddy) Fuller Sr., was born 13 Sept 1931 in Cheraw, SC. Robert spent his early childhood and teenage years in Cheraw, S.C. where he attended Coulter Memorial Academy.

On 24 Nov 1950, he joined the United States Army, and was selected to attend Airborne School. Upon completion, he was assigned to Frankfurt Germany, the first of four overseas tours; he completed two tours to Vietnam and two tours to Germany. Robert retired with over20 years of military service and was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal with One Silver and Two Bronze Service Stars, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Valorous Unit Commendation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the Parachutist Badge and finally he was an expert on the M16 rifle. As a parachutist, he was a proud member of both the infamous 101st Airborne Division, (Air Assault) XVIII Airborne Corps - nicknamed the Screaming Eagles and the 82d Airborne, 101st Airborne Division. A strong advocate of military service, he encouraged each of his five children to enter the military, all five of his children choose to follow in his footsteps.

He was a long time member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, where he served on Trustee Board.

An extremely sharp dresser, Mr. Fuller was always "dress right dress" or "dressed to the nines". He was always the sharpest dresser.

Predeceased by his sons, Jerome Hooks and Robert Fuller, Jr., two brothers, Benjamin and Fred Fuller and one sister, Lucille Esau.

Mr. Fuller is survived by his wife of 47 years, Tishia Mae Fuller, daughters Charlene Fuller White of Smyrna, Georgia; Patricia David, (Michael) of Cheraw, South Carolina; Terrie Fuller Mahoney (Eathel) of Conyers, Georgia; his elder brother, Evans Fuller, Jr. of Cheraw, South Carolina; his sister, Mamie Watts of Cheraw, South Carolina; one daughter in law Sarah Fuller of Cary, North Carolina; a host of nieces and nephews, and eight grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Phillip Curtis McLaurin

CHERAW - Phillip Curtis McLaurin, 21, died Monday, May 9, 2016. Born in Bennettsville, SC he was a son of Robert “Bob” Anthony McLaurin of Cheraw, SC and the late Dana Curtis McLaurin. Phillip was an Emergency Medical Technician student at Northeastern Technical College working toward his National Certification. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and a member of the Cheraw Rescue Squad.

Surviving is his father listed above, a brother, David McLaurin of Cheraw, SC, maternal grandmother, Rachel Curtis of Chesterfield, SC, paternal grandmother, Nancy McLaurin of Cheraw, SC.

He was preceded in death by his mother listed above, maternal grandfather, David Legrand Curtis, Sr. and paternal grandfather, Phillip Creech “Bubba” McLaurin, Jr.

The family received friends 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Tracy Ann Sloan

HOPE MILLS, N.C. – Tracy Ann Sloan, age 26, passed away Monday, May 9, 2016, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was born in Robeson County on September 18, 1989.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother Jean Lowder and her maternal grandfather Horace Fipps.

She is survived by her father, Robert “Bob” Sloan and wife Kelly of Society Hill, SC; her mother, Diane Fipps Fields and husband Don of Hope Mills; her children, Julius Alexander Graham III and Alexis Diane Sloan, both of the home; her sister, Amanda Sloan of Society Hill, SC; her maternal grandmother, Dura Ann Fipps of Lumberton; and her paternal grandfather, Albert Sloan and wife Loa of Camden, TN.

A time of visitation was held prior to the service on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 12:00-1:45 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc.

Following the visitation, a funeral service was held at 2:00 PM at Floyd Memorial Chapel with Rev. Ed Wilcox officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

William B. ‘Dock’ Winburn

PATRICK - Mr. William B. “Dock” Winburn, age 76, died Sunday, May 8, 2016.

A funeral service was held at 4:00 PM, Friday, May 13, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Patrick Cemetery.

Visitation was from 3:00 – 4:00 PM, Friday, May 13, 2016 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Winburn was born September 25, 1939 in Florence, SC a son of the late John Oswald and Olivia Griggs Winburn. He was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens with 26 years of service and a member of Patrick Baptist Church. Mr. Winburn was instrumental in organizing and building the Patrick Rural Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years. He also served as a Board Member of Patrick Rural Fire Department. Mr. Winburn enjoyed doing yard work, mowing grass, and working in his flowers. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Dock was also preceded in death by 1 sister, Emmie Kneece Shaw.

Survivors include Wife of nearly 55 years: Helen F. Winburn of the home; 1 Son: William B. (Debbie) Winburn, II of Florence, SC; 1 Daughter: Teresa W. (Ted) Leonard of Charlotte, NC;

2 Grandsons: Ben and Bailey Winburn; 1 Sister: Faye W. (Joe) Harding of Silverton, OR; Also: Numerous nieces and nephews.

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C., – Gladys Cunningham 64, died on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 2 PM from the Pageland Community Center, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Pageland, SC. She was born on April 8, 1952 in Pageland, SC to the late Jazel and Myrtle Miller. She is survived by: her husband, Terence L. Cunningham; a daughter, Monica M. Blakeney (Marty), Lancaster, SC; a son, Terence L. Cunningham, II, Charlotte, NC; four granddaughters, LaDasia, Myka, Marquisha and Naraiyah; a grandson, Steffone; a great granddaughter, Tonya; six sisters, Annie Massey, Charlotte, CC, Mamie Richardson (James), Lancaster, SC, Margaret McManus, Jeran Miller and Judy McKoy(William), all of Pageland, SC; a brother, Louis Funderburk (Edith), Charlotte, NC. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge.

James Ray Freeman

CHESTERFIELD – Mr. James Ray Freeman, age 74, died Saturday, April 30, 2016.

A funeral service was held at 6:00 P.M. Monday, May 2, 2016 at Friendship United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation was 5:00 – 6:00 P.M. Monday, May 2, 2016, prior to the service, in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Mr. Freeman was born October 25, 1941, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Ray Thomas “Buddy” and Aletha James Freeman. He was a farmer and a member of Friendship United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the BWZ Men’s Club. James Ray was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed growing watermelons and cantaloupes. He also loved animals, especially horses and his pet chicken “Cluk Cluk.” James Ray loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include Sister and Brother-in-law: Ollie Dean Freeman Dutton and Ronnie Dutton of Chesterfield, SC; 2 Nieces: Amy Dutton Yow and Pamela Dutton Adams; 4 Great Nieces: Deanna Yow Dixon, Amber Yow, Erin White Hurst, and Hannah Rebecca White; Also 3 Great Great Nieces and 1 Great Great Nephew; Aunt: Elizabeth J. Wallace and Uncle: Jadie S. James both of Chesterfield, SC, and many Cousins.

Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o of Sylvia Hurst 1790 Hwy. 742, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Betty White Hurst

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Betty White Hurst, age 85, died Monday, May 2, 2016 at her home. She was born August 31, 1930 in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late Thurman Ellison White and Letha Smith White. In addition to her parents, Betty was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Campbell Hurst and by her sister, Louise W. “Sister” King.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Chesterfield Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC. A private family service of committal preceded the service.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all. “Miss Betty” was known for her most generous, loving heart, and she touched the lives of many with her love and kindness.

Betty retired in 1996 as Assistant Vice President of First Citizens Bank in Chesterfield, SC. She was a dedicated employee for 48 years. She was an active member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and served as nursery director for 45 years. For her dedication to the many children she served, the nursery was recently named the Betty W. Hurst nursery. Betty will long be remembered for her love and devotion to her church, family, and others. We are thankful for the gift of her life.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Nancy and Grady Brown of Beaufort, SC.; and Bill and Charlotte Hurst of Chesterfield, SC. Also her grandchildren, Caroline Brown (Thomas) Rhodes of Columbia, SC. and Drew Hurst of Chesterfield, SC. The light of her life were her great grandchildren, Lee and Virginia Rhodes who she was known as Great Gram. Also surviving are sisters, Eloise W. Melton of Columbia, SC. and Bobbie W. Freeman of Chesterfield, SC and many special nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Chesterfield County for their loving care of “Miss Betty.”
