Era Mae Moore

CHERAW - Miss Era Mae Moore, age 67, died Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at her home. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Friday, August 12, 2016 at Fork Creek United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl Ritter. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Friday prior to the service at the church.

Miss Moore was born September 5, 1948 in Ruby, SC a daughter of the late James Franklin and Eula Bell Oliver Moore. She was a homemaker and member of Fork Creek United Methodist Church. Mae enjoyed talking with her friends and never met a stranger.

Survivors include her beloved sister, Abbie Jean Moore of Cheraw, SC; special friend and caregiver, Sara Leak of Cheraw, SC; and a host of cousins and friends.

Margaret B. Price
JEFFERSON - Miss Margaret B. Price, age 84, died Friday, August 12, 2016. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 14, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tim Williams and the Rev. Curtis Laney. Burial followed in the Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 1:30 – 3:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Miss Price was born June 15, 1932 in Jefferson, SC a daughter of the late Wade Hampton and Quincey Melton Price. She was a retired employee of Dawson of Wadesboro. Miss Price enjoyed watching TV, reading her cookbooks, and cooking for her family. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchild.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Edith Mae Rollins, and Louise Rollins; brothers, Wade “Speck”, Dan, Ed, Roy, Earl, and Willis Price.

Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn P. Lynn and husband Mitchell of Jefferson, SC; brother, Bobby H. “Bud” Price of Jefferson, SC; 2 grandchildren, Teresa Lynn Adams of Jefferson, SC and Mitch Lynn, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; her great grandson, Ridge Adams of Jefferson, SC; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special 4-legged friends, “Tiny” and “Chloe.”

CHESTERFIELD - Betty J. Rivers, 66, died on Friday, August 5, 2016. Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 3:30pm from the Fisher Community Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born on March 27, 1950 to the late Burnest and Vellma Evans Chapman in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Survivors: her husband, James "Calvin" Rivers; children, Burnest Rivers (Tasha) and Tajuana Rivers (Michael); a stepson, Joe Redfern Sr. and eight grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield was in charge. .

Billy Blakeney Sr.

MT. CROGHAN – Billy Blakeney Sr. 72, died on Sunday July 31, 2016. Funeral services were held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 3 pm from the Gum Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born May 6, 1944 to the late James and Lula Mae Tyson Blakeney in Chesterfield County, SC. Survivors: a daughter, Catherine Blakeney, Washington, DC, three sons, Billy Floyd Blakeney Jr., Washington, DC, Kenneth L. Blakeney (Tracey) of New York and Rodney Stewart, Washington, DC; a sister, Valeria Baker (Gerald), Pageland, SC; a brother, Joe Louis Blakeney, Washington, DC; and four grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge.

Sarah Henry Diggs

MORVEN, N.C. – Mrs. Sarah Henry Diggs, 92, died Saturday, July 16, 2016 at her home.

Funeral services were held at 11:00AM Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Whitlow and Rev. Larry King officiating. Interment followed in Morven Cemetery.
The family greeted friends one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Sarah was born April 8, 1924 in Anson County, NC a daughter of the late William Arthur Henry and the late Lula Grooms Henry. She was retired from Glen Manufacturing and attended Morven Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughters, Susan Pratt of Wadesboro, Marilyn Burr and husband, Keith of Chesterfield, SC and Faye Diggs of Cheraw, SC; her grandsons, Bruce Johnson and Jimmy Johnson and wife, Jennifer both of Wadesboro; her great-grandchildren, Kaylan Johnson of Apex, Kyle Johnson and Maverlee Johnson both of Wadesboro; her great-great-grandson, Tydus Simmons of Apex and her brother, Mark Henry and wife, Mandy of Peltzer, SC.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard LeGrand Diggs and brothers and sister, James, William, Haywood and Herbert Henry and Pat Rippy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 128 S Tryon St #1588, Charlotte, NC 28202.
The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.

Richard Dannie Haire

WALLACE - Richard Dannie Haire, 59, died August 3, 2016. Richard was the son of the late Alton and Mary Taylor Haire. He was a lifelong member of White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC.

Mr. Haire is survived by his wife Gerri Bowman, sons Jeremy Haire of SC, Richard Haire, Jr. of Rockingham, NC, Kristofer Haire of Cheraw, SC, a daughter Skyler Haire of Rockingham, NC, brothers Alton Haire of Laurinburg, NC, Albert Haire of Wallace, SC, a sister Sylvia Haire of Wallace, SC, and grandson John Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, a daughter Brittany Haire, sisters, Brenda Haire and Elizabeth Haire.

The family received friends 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM Saturday, August 5, 2016 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. A Memorial Service was held 5:00 PM Saturday, August 5, 2016 at White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Wallace, SC.

Lyvonne M. Lear

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Lyvonne M. Lear, age 85, died Saturday, July 23, 2016 at her home. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 1:00 PM Monday, July 25, 2016 at Hopewell Baptist Church by Rev. Dan Austin and Brent Taylor. The family greeted friends from 12:00 – 1:00 PM prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church.
Mrs. Lear was born September 9, 1930 in Altavista, VA, a daughter of the late Sanford Leonard and Ethel Jane Briggs Moore. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, and a member of the state championship girls’ basketball team under coach E.N. Clower. A lifelong resident of Chesterfield, Mrs. Lear, along with her husband, was the owner and operator of Lear’s IGA for over 50 years. She was the recipient of the Katherine G. Hurst Business Woman of the Year Award in 2005. Mrs. Lear was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Lyvonne was preceded in death by her husband, Charles N. “Chuck” Lear.
Surviving are her 2 daughters, Diane L. (Kevin McCarthy) Brewer, and Fran (Lee Davis) Lear both of Chesterfield, SC; 2 grandchildren, Warren (Susie) Boswell of Ruby, SC, and Ian (Ashlee) Morgan of Norwood, NC; 2 great grandsons, Zachary Boswell and Nicholas Boswell; 1 brother, J.W. Moore of Chesterfield, SC; niece Vickie Moore of Florence, SC; and a very special thanks to a dear family friend, Alvin "Skeeter" Boswell.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Mrs. Lear’s caregivers, Hattie Matthews, Clarence Robinson, Denise Watts, Teneka Watts, Maudie Locklear, Maria Moore, Datresa Davis, Guy Taylor, Brenda Winburn, the staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County, and the late Judy Collins for their exceptional love and care.

James Mack

JEFFERSON – James Mack 79, died on Saturday, July 30, 2016. Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 12PM from the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the Morning Star Holiness Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. He was born June 8, 1937 to the late Thomas C. Mack and Ruth Allen Mack in Bennettsville SC. Survivors: his companion, Aster Truesdale, Jefferson, SC; three sons, Rodger O. Gainey (Mary), Charlotte NC, Kyle King Jamaica, NY and Quinn Murray, Charlotte NC; three daughters, Denise Wells (Wayne), Jamaica, NY, Lorinda Murray and Aisha Murray Rickard (Joseph), Charlotte, NC; a brother, John Mack, Durham, NC; a sister, Geneva Reed, Durham, NC; fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Pageland is in charge. .

Billy Ray Oliver

CHESTERFIELD – The Rev. Billy Ray Oliver, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 1, 2016. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 5, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Rev. Oliver was born November 22, 1935, in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late James Gilbert Oliver and Alethea Hurst Oliver Clanton. He accepted God’s call into the gospel ministry at an early age and faithfully served him throughout his life. Rev. Oliver pastored several churches in the area and was faithful in ministering to area nursing homes for the past 28 years. He enjoyed singing and playing bluegrass music and was a member of the over fifty club at the Anson County Library. Billy Ray enjoyed traveling, gardening, working with his brother at Oliver’s Tire and spending time with his family. His greatest passion was sharing the love of Jesus Christ to everyone he came in contact with.
In addition to his parents, Billy Ray was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Billy Steven Oliver and Michael Dee Oliver; and 1 brother, James Gilbert “Shorty” Oliver.
Survivors include his 6 daughters, Jan Benton, Sherry (Bobby) Huneycutt, Jenny McCabe all of Chesterfield, SC, Cindy (Terry) Dean of Dawsonville, GA, Donna (Tommy) Williams of Flowery Branch, GA, Lynn (Terry) Collins of Cumming, GA; 1 brother, Tommy (Margaret) Oliver of Jefferson, SC; sister, Morgorie Ann (Paul) Demby; sister-in-law, Molly Oliver of Pageland, SC, 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Vickie Rae Sumner

CHESTERFIELD - Ms. Vickie Rae Sumner, age 60, died Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral Services were held at 4:00 PM Friday, August 5, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 7:00 – 9:00 PM on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Ms. Sumner was born February 21, 1956 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Sumner and Alta Rae Previtte Sumner. She was a retired CNA and a member of Zoar United Methodist Church. Vickie had a heart for caring for others. Her passion was taking care of people of all ages, especially her nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

Survivors include her brother, Jerry Sumner and wife Suzanne of Patrick, SC; 1 sister, Nancy Ardealia Bosman Freyermuth and husband Dennis Freyermuth of Chesterfield, SC; 4 nephews that she loved as sons, Thomas (Kimberly Black) Knight, Matthew Knight both of Chesterfield, SC, Ben (Samantha Black) Knight of Jefferson, SC, and David Sumner of Patrick, SC; special great niece, Kaylin Knight; special great nephews, Trenton Knight, Kameron Knight, and Jaxton Knight; sister of the heart, Shannon Bedell and husband Scott of Ruby, SC, brothers of the heart, Johnny Johnson of Patrick, SC, Robert Lear and wife Carol of Chesterfield, SC, and Andy Freeman of Cheraw, SC; special cousin, Mary Crawford of Lilesville, NC.

Thelma Thurman Venters

RUBY - Thelma Thurman Venters went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 31, 2016. She was the daughter of the late James Perkins Thurman and Molly Sullivan Thurman. Her parents instilled Bible truths and family values that she carried with her throughout her amazing life. Thelma was married to the late Reverend Major Douglas A. Venters of Badin, NC. Thelma was a loving wife, daughter, aunt and great-aunt to her many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Ruby Baptist Church, with burial in the Ruby Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service in the Main Sanctuary.

A member of Ruby Baptist Church, Thelma graduated from Wingate Junior College as Valedictorian. She received her BA magna cum laude from Furman University, and her Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas.

Thelma served as an NC State Sunday School Director, Sunday School Teacher, District Director in Vacation Bible School but her favorite was working with the youth. Thelma taught Greek at Pfeiffer College and worked as secretary in the Academic Dean’s office. She always worked alongside her Air Force Chaplin husband Douglas wherever he was stationed.

Thelma is survived by brothers Billy Thurman of Ruby, SC, Micky Thurman of Mt. Croghan, SC and sisters-in-law, Mildred G. Thurman of Ruby, SC and Margaret C. Thurman of Florence, SC. Thelma was preceded in death by husband Douglas A. Venters, son Thurman Kyle Venters, sisters Madge T. Davis, Gladys T. Sutton and brothers Knox, David and Johnnie Thurman.

The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to Agape Hospice of Bennettsville for their love, prayers, hymn singing, excellent care and concern. To Cheraw Healthcare for their loving care, prayers, kindness and support, with a special thank you to Rosa Pegues. To Joanne Durant for the loving care she gave to “Tam.”

PAGELAND – Miss Bernice Mary Jordan, age 90, died Sunday, July 31, 2016, at her home. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Miss Jordan was born August 20, 1925, in Pageland, SC, a daughter of the late Houston and Nola Helms Jordan. She was a homemaker and member of White Plains Baptist Church. Bernice enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was a “mother” to all of her nieces and nephews and will be remembered for always putting others first.

Survivors include a brother, Billy H. Jordan of Pageland, SC; numerous other nieces and nephews, including Ricky Watts of Pageland, SC, and special caregivers, Pat Rollings of Jefferson, SC and Debbie Donahue of Mt. Croghan, SC.

Phyllis Geraldine Atkinson

PAGELAND – Phyllis Geraldine Atkinson, age 80, of Pageland, South Carolina went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 25, 2016 while surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice of Chesterfield County.

Mrs. Phyllis Atkinson was born on January 27, 1936 in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late Roy Evans and Eva Griffin Evans. Phyllis was united in marriage of 43 years to the late Bruce Atkinson. She is preceded in death by her Daughter, Rhonda Atkinson Thomas, Brothers, W.L. Evans, Alpheus Evans, Roy “Shorty” Thomas Evans, Charles “Shot” Evans and Everette Evans. She was a member of Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, SC.

Mrs. Atkinson is survived by her Sons, Richard Atkinson (Kathy) of Pageland, SC and Randy Atkinson (Eileen) of Pageland, SC, Brother, Marvin Evans(Dale) of Marshville, NC, Grandchildren, Brandon Atkinson( Ashley) of Pageland, SC, Leigh Anne Thomas of Matthews, NC, Brianne Atkinson of Pageland, SC, Daniel Atkinson of Pageland, SC, Stephen Atkinson of Pageland, SC, Jonathan Atkinson of Pageland, SC, Whitney Atkinson of Pageland, SC and David Atkinson of Pageland, SC, Great Grandson, Carson Atkinson of Pageland, SC and Great Granddaughter Aleah Atkinson of Pageland, SC.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, SC with Rev. Tim Madaris and Pastor Farrar Griggs officiating. The burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland.

The family received friends from 6:30 PM- 8:30 PM on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Baumgartner Funeral Home.

Mary Davis Goodale

CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Mary Davis Goodale, age 82, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Oakland Baptist Church by Rev. Julian Cato and Dr. Phillip Hunter. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday, July 29, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mrs. Goodale was born February 17, 1934 in Morven, NC, a daughter of the late Reuben Nathan and Effie Jane White Davis. Mrs. Goodale, along with her husband, was the owner and operator of The Townhouse Restaurant for many years. She later retired from Chesterfield Manufacturing. At the age of 7, Mary accepted Christ as her Savior and faithfully served Him throughout her life. She was a member of Oakland Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and working in her flowers. Mrs. Goodale will be remembered for her generous, giving soul. She had a special place in her heart for animals and would rescue each and every one of them. Her family was of utmost importance to her and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mary was also joyously reunited with the love of her life, Voyd G. Goodale, and her brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her son, V. Garland Goodale, Jr. and wife, Kristi of Chesterfield, SC; her daughter, Angela Goodale and fiancé, Gary Joslin of Sumter, SC; adopted son, Kenny Scott of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Christian J. Goodale and Kaleb Goodale; special nieces, Jane Boyle and Ann Hanson both of Signal Mtn., TN, Terry Rhyne of Wallace, NC, and numerous other nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Josephine Adams and Betty Jean Davis both of Kannapolis, NC, Jane Davis of Alexandria, VA, and Mickie Davis of Fl.; and beloved family friend, Frances Pruitt of Chesterfield, SC.
