CHERAW – Ralph Lorenzo Isaac, 45, died on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11am from the Word of Life Fellowship Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Mt. Mary Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. He was born to the late Melvin and Laura Workman Isaac on July 12, 1971 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Survivors: a son, Demetris Turner, Cheraw, SC; three sisters, Robin Spruill (Stan), Cheraw, SC, Vickie Massey (Timothy), Pageland, SC and Robin Hepburn, Cheraw, SC; five brothers, Terry Isaac, Curtis Isaac, Melvin Isaac, Jr., Timothy Isaac and Jimmy Lee Toney, all of Cheraw, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Cheraw.
Mary Lee Sellers Lowery
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mary Lee Sellers Lowery, 93, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 12pm from the Rock Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Ruby, SC. She was born to the late Owen B. and Annie J. Sellers on February 1, 1923 in Ruby, SC. Survivors: a daughter Margaret Cuthbertson (Willie), Charlotte, NC; four siblings, George Seller, Huntersville, NC, James Bryant, Hamden, CT, Lucille Redding (James), Ruby, SC and Viola Nelson, New Haven, CT; four grandchildren, Allisha (Jerry) Cassidy, Marcus (Selena) Cuthbertson, Kosey Cuthbertson and Shaquanna Lowery; and eight great grandchildren. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland.
Alvin Leo Newsome Jr.
WALLACE – Alvin Leo Newsome, Jr., age 77, died Thursday, December 8, 2016 after a short illness.
He was the oldest son of the late Alvin Leo Newsome, Sr and Dorothy Ann Best Guimond.
He is survived by his daughter, Christina Newsome of Florence, SC and son Alvin Leo “Beau” Newsome, III of Wallace, SC. Grandchildren, Jessica Blair Fender of Florence, SC and Elizabeth Jade Cahoon (Heath) of Charleston, SC. Great Grandchildren, Mason James Cahoon, Alice Christine Cahoon and Evans Colton Kirby, brothers Larry Newsome of Valley Forge, PA, Kenny Newsome of Millsboro, Deleware and a sister Winifred Clark of Columbus, GA.
Alvin was born on April 9, 1939 in Darlington, SC and lived in Clyde, SC for the first 14 years of his life. During his early high school years, he was a star football, basketball and baseball player for the Hartsville High Red Foxes. Alvin also played on a semi-pro baseball team in McBee, SC. Alvin was also an amateur boxer and obtained fame in the area by being the only person to last almost 3 full rounds in a boxing match with a caged gorilla touring the country and competing in amateur boxing matches for show. Eventually, his family relocated to Cheraw, SC where Alvin continued to be a star performer in baseball, basketball and football for Cheraw High School. Upon graduation Alvin enlisted in the US Army attaining the rank of Specialist 4 to Sergeant. During his time in the Army, Alvin represented the US Army in boxing matches around the world competing and winning in numerous boxing events. Upon his discharge from the Army he was undefeated in his matches. Alvin also received medals and commendations for his rifle, carbine and pistol shooting skills.
After his army service, Alvin returned to Cheraw and began a career in the family automotive business. In Cheraw Alvin met his future bride, Judy Hewitt. Alvin and Judy were married and had one beautiful baby girl that they named Christina. Alvin relocated to Florence, SC with his new bride and continued in the automotive business. Alvin and Judy later divorced and Alvin relocated to Pennsylvania and continued in the automotive business with his brother, Larry. In Pennsylvania, he met his second wife and they had a son, Alvin Leo Newsome, III.
Alvin relocated back to South Carolina area to continue in the automotive industry and began a career in real estate development.
The family received friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.
A graveside funeral service was held Sunday, December, 11, 2016, at 2:00 PM in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.
Joel Mack ‘Joey’ Pollard
CHERAW – Mr. Joel Mack “Joey” Pollard, age 45, entered into rest on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Funeral Services were held at 2:30 PM Sunday, December 4, 2016 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Rev. Jimmy Owens with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 2:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHERAW – Willie Sellers, 72, died on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Funeral services were held on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 2pm from the Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Gillespie Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. He was born to the late Savannah Smalls and Lloyd Sellers on November 1, 1944 in Cheraw, SC. Survivors: four daughters, LaVounda Floyd, Tashia Rubin (Chad), Florence, SC, Tammy Ellerbe and Tiffany Ellerbe, Cheraw, SC; three sons, Etric Ellerbe, Paul Ellerbe, Cheraw, SC and Travis Ellerbe, Charlotte, NC; nine step-children, Teressa Leak (Johnny), Cheraw, SC, John Ellerbe III, Queens, NY, Tracy Norwood (Rico), Monroe, NC, Theresa Michelle Cook (Michael), Tonya Ellerbe, Cheraw, SC, Daniel Ellerbe (Monique) Fayetteville, NC, Theda Henry, Alex Ellerbe, Chris Ellerbe (Jessica), Cheraw, SC; thirty-six grandchildren, six sisters, Perline Lewis, Virginia Green, Lucille Davis (Barry), Patricia Spencer, Shirley Ann Merriman and Helen Benton (Jimmy), Cheraw, SC; three brothers, Floyd Sellers, Thomas Sellers (LeAndria) and Eugene Sellers (Cathy), Cheraw, SC. Carroll L. Shoemake
CHERAW – Carroll L. Shoemake, 68, died Friday, December 9, 2016. Born in Darlington, SC he was a son of the late Luke and Margaret Shoemake. He retired as a Captain of the Cheraw Police Department after 25 years of service. He was the owner of Shoemake’s Backhoe Service and worked for Southern 8ths Farm. He enjoyed golf, fishing, and riding a four-wheeler with his grandchildren. He loved spending time at the beach with his family.
Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Annie “Sparkle” H. Shoemake, Cheraw, SC, a son, Luke (Ashley) Shoemake, daughters, Christy (Jeffery) S. Jacobs, Carol Ann (Mark) Allen, all of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Ashlyn Jacobs, Taylor Allen, Russell Gause, Ty Allen, a daughter by heart, Mandy Shoemake.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, brothers, Richard Shoemake, William Shoemake, sisters, Erleen Keith and Mary Gainey.

Harold Loyd Smith
McLEAN, Va.
Harold Loyd Smith, age 80, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Born in Brookhaven, MS to Harvey Lee Smith and his wife Mollie Mae West. He is survived by his wife Mary Aileen (Maileen) Smith and by two children of a previous marriage Lauryn Ann Erndl (Jay) and Christopher Smith (Christine); six grandchildren Jessica Lauryn Allen (Dustin), Emily Caroline Erndl, David Charles Erndl, Larisa Grace Erndl, Hayley Lynn Smith and Garrett Dale Smith.
He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi and served in the U.S. Air Force. In 1963, he joined NASA and worked on every U.S. manned spacecraft program. His assignments have taken him to Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, and NASA Headquarters in DC. After 34 years, he retired from the Office of Space Flight at NASA in 1997.
He enjoyed making fine furniture for his wife, family and friends and doing handy man tasks for the neighbors and family. He liked genealogy research and was a member of SAR, FFV and Jamestowne Society. Every summer he had a large tomato garden and grew “high” antique cotton in the front yard. A longtime member of The Falls Church Anglican Church. Services will be in Cheraw, SC. Contributions can be made to St. David’s Cemetery Association, PO Box 1196, Cheraw, SC 29520.
Harold W. ‘Buddy’ Brock
CHERAW - Mr. Harold W. “Buddy” Brock, age 76, entered into rest on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at his home. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 3, 2016 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Rev. Dr. Alan Arnold and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial to follow in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Brock was born December 21, 1939 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Samuel Wilson and Vermelle Rivers Brock. He was the owner and operator of Brock’s Repair and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brock enjoyed gardening, working in his yard and talking with his customers at work. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends, and holding his miniature dachshund, “Winkie”.
In addition to his parents, Buddy was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Myra “Susie” Joplin and Celia Johnson.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Shirley Harpe Brock of the home; son, Gregory Harold (Kammi) Brock of Patrick, SC, daughter, Cheryl (Earl) Goldsberry of Cheraw, SC, 2 brothers, David Warren Brock and Ricky Brock both of Cheraw, SC; sisters, Loretta Burton, Brenda Rollins and Judith Herndon both of Cheraw, SC, Sheila (Jimmy) Gibson of Chesterfield, SC, and Pamela (Ricky) Lee of Cheraw, SC; 3 grandchildren, Mia Little, Thomas Goldsberry, and Josh Brock; 4 great grandchildren, Kristopher Little, Lexi Little, Chelsea Goldsberry, and Jamie Lang.

HARTSVILLE - Steve Bryant, 57, died Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late William Harvey and Ethel Lee Hayes Bryant. He was a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, Society Hill, SC and also attended Church of God of Prophecy, Hartsville, SC. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and wood working. He loved his family, especially his son, and his siblings, a close-knit family.
Surviving is his son, Stephen (Caitlin) Jefferson Bryant of Pinewood, SC, brothers, Carl Wayne Bryant of Chesterfield, SC, Michael (Patsy) Bryant of Society Hill, SC, William Franklin “Tom” (Brenda) Bryant of Wallace, SC, Tony Harvey Bryant of Cheraw, SC, Ronald Jefferson “Jeff” (Amy) Bryant of Society Hill, SC, a sister, Bonnie L. (Henry) Griggs of Cheraw, SC, loving cousins, Diane Bryant, Pam Bryant, Bill Bryant, Ronnie Bryant and Johnny Bryant, an aunt, Hazel Polk Wilson of Society Hill, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.

David Lee Harrell
David Lee Harrell was born on December 4, 1930 in Chesterfield, South Carolina to the late Obadiah and Geneva Harrell. He was preceded in death by his sister Ruth Mae Tolbert and nephew Marcus Jay.
David received his education in the public school system of Chesterfield, South Carolina. In 1949 he enlisted in the Army and became a career solider. During this time he served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served his country proudly and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal and the Bronze Star.
While serving in the military in Germany, he met and fell in love with Gisela Bauer. David and Gisela returned to the United States and were married in Washington, DC on July 11, 1964. From this marriage, one child was born, David L. Harrell, Jr.
Upon retiring from the military in 1972, David joined the staff of the Burlington County Times newspaper as a pressman. He brought to the Burlington County Times, his commitment to excellence. He retired from the newspaper with over 25 years of service.
David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior very early in life. After his retirement from the military, he joined the Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was an active member. He served on the church choir in his early years and later he became a Trustee.
David was a very friendly person. He loved his family, his friends, and his church family. He enjoyed dinning out, spending time with his veterans group and was a diehard Phillies fan. He always had a comforting manner that made a person feel welcomed in his presence
David especially loved his grandchildren. He delighted in talking with them and hearing about what was going on in their lives. He loved the fact that his 3 grandchildren lived nearby and he was able to be a part of their lives.
David leaves to mourn his wife, Gisela; son, David L. Harrell, Jr; daughter-in-law Angela Harrell; grandchildren, David T. Harrell, Lauren Harrell and Danielle Harrell; nieces, Julia Tolbert, Genetta White, Vanessa Harrell, Constance Harrell, Ramona Dehoff; nephew, Vincent Harrell; Sister-in-Laws Sofie Williams; Hildegard Dandl (Robert); brother-in-laws Alois Bauer (Crystal) and Franz Bauer (Elli); godchildren, John and Jackie Bell and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Carroll Kelly
CHERAW - Mr. Carroll Kelly, age 84, entered into rest on Friday, December 2, 2016. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Monday, December 5, 2016 in the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Chad Vick and Pastor Louis Perez with burial following in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with masonic rites. The family will greet friends from 2:00 -3:00 PM Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Cathy Blackburn Novinger
CHERAW – Cathy Blackburn Novinger passed away November 27, 2016 at her home in Cheraw, SC after a heroic battle with ovarian cancer. She was the CEO of Palmetto AgriBusiness Council and President and CEO of Novinger QTR, Inc. Born April 7th, 1949 in Portsmouth, Ohio; she was the daughter of Leona Collingsworth Blackburn and the late Donald Everett Blackburn.
She is survived by her mother; her husband of 48 years, Robert L. Novinger; her son, Dr. Travis Novinger and daughter in law, Laurie Novinger; grandchildren, Taylor Novinger and Abbey Novinger; sister, Donna Blackburn Jumper and brother in law, Henry Jumper; niece, Cristie Russell; nephew, Tyler Russel (Sarah); great niece, Emma Grace Russell; and brother in law; Dean Novinger (Lisa).
Cathy received her Business Administration Degree from Southeastern Business College and was a graduate of the Edison Electric Institute’s Electric Utility Executive Management Program. She moved to her adopted city of Columbia, SC in 1968 where she went to work for SCANA Corporation as a file clerk and rose to Vice President at the early age of 32, retiring as Senior Vice President in 1999. Her career as a Senior Officer and Senior Public Policy Maker for SCANA included roles in economic development, communications, labor relations, governmental affairs, strategic planning, human resources and public relations.
After retiring from SCANA, she was chosen to lead the state’s new agribusiness association, Palmetto AgriBusiness Council and under her leadership for 16 years, the Council became a unified voice for South Carolina’s largest industry of agriculture and forestry. It was also at this time she formed her consulting company, Novinger QTR, Inc.
After her diagnosis of ovarian cancer and seeing the need to educate women about this deadly disease, Cathy founded an ovarian cancer organization, today known as the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Central SC, which brings awareness to the symptoms and the importance of early detection. She served as the organization’s Board chair since 2006. She began the Coalition’s signature event, the Ovarian Cancer Butterfly Release which is held every September at the State House to honor and remember those affected by ovarian cancer. She became a symbol of inspiration and hope to women who were battling this disease.
An advocate for improving the quality of life in her community, Cathy earned a lifetime of achievements and honors including: the University of South Carolina Honorary Doctorate Degree of Public Service, 2011 Humanitarian of the Year, 2010 Ag Advocate of the Year, 2010 West Metro Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award, 2006 Ambassador of the Year, 1999 Order of the Palmetto, SC Historical Foundation Society Businesswoman of the Year, SC Schools Public Relations Association Outstanding Leader in Education, Ohio Council of Colleges Outstanding Private Career Graduate, SC Business & Professional Women’s Career Woman of the Year, Columbia Metropolitan Magazine’s Five Women of the Decade and Midlands Top 25 Influential Leaders.
During her professional career, Cathy served on numerous Boards and Commissions including; Midlands Business Leadership Group, Advocated for Agriculture, SC Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, SC Office of Rural Health Board, SC State University Board of Trustees USC School of Medicine Partnership Board, SC State Board for Technical & Comprehensive Education (past chair), Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (past chair), Lexington Medical Center Foundation Board, SC Civil Justice Coalition (past chair), SC Department of Commerce Executive Committee, Midlands Housing Alliance (past chair), The River Alliance Executive Committee, USC Dean’s Council-College of Hospitality, SC Research Authority Board of Trustees (past chair) and Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties (past chair). On the national level, she served on the White House Council on Rural America as chair, Southern States Energy Board Utility Advisory Council, the U.S. Business & Industry Council Board of Trustees and the Junior Achievement National Liaison.
Cathy lived her life devoted to her God, her family and her community. As much as she loved her work, she loved her family even more. Her legacy will live on in the paths she has blazed, the many lived she has impacted and her profound sense of service to others. We will miss her goodness and grace.

Funeral service was held Sunday, December 4, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 2003 Charleston Highway, Cayce. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia. A visitation was held Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Central SC, 602 Meeting Street, Suite B, West Columbia, SC 29169.
Meredith Moore Austin
PAGELAND - Meredith Moore Austin, 30, died on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 1pm from the Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born to Eddie T. Rivers and Sharon A. Moore on February 7, 1986 in Chesterfield County, SC. Laurens - Mrs. Vivian Sellers Horne, age 87, formerly of Chesterfield, SC, entered into rest on Friday, November 25, 2016 at her home. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel by Brent Taylor with burial to follow in the Thompson Creek Baptist Church Cemtery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Horne was born August 6, 1929 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Hardy James Sellers, Sr. and Ruth Davis Sellers. She was a member and past president of Zonta International. Mrs. Horne was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church of Columbia and was also a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed camping and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Vivian is also preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Horne; 1 grandson, Joshua Horne; and 1 brother, Ralph A. Sellers.
Survivors include her son, Art (Cindy) Horne of Laurens, SC; grandchildren, James William (Jessica) Horne of Texas, Jennifer Horne of Virginia Beach, VA, Dominic Horne and Sarah Horne both of Laurens, SC; 1 great grandchild, Johannah Horne; brother, Jack Sellers of Hopkins, SC.
