Sarah McMillan Roller

WALLACE - Sarah McMillan Roller, 79, died Saturday, November 19, 2016. Born in Red Springs, NC, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Anne Mae Locklear McMillan.

The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Mission of Faith Church, Wallace, SC.

Burial will be in Mission of Faith Cemetery.

Charlie I. Vogel

WELLINGTON AT HERSHEY'S MILL, Pa. - Charlie I. Vogel, 100, of Wellington at Hershey's Mill, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, November 17, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Vogel, with whom he shared 70 years of marriage, and created wonderful memories and experiences through traveling the world.

Charlie was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of William and Charlotte Vogel. He lived in Villanova, PA for 30 years, before moving to West Chester, PA for the past 29 years. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1937 with a BA degree in Biology, and he was member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. It was there that he met the love of his life, Virginia. His passion and dedication to Bucknell enabled him to establish the Charles I. and Virginia Vogel Scholarship Fund. Charlie's chief occupation before his retirement was Vice President of Sales for Olin Aluminum. Following his retirement from Olin, Charlie began a business of his own as a manufacturer's rep for fabricating specialty metals. He served as Treasurer of the West Chester Meals on Wheels, as well as an interviewer for Hershey's Mill Community television station, where he arranged and interviewed various notable Philadelphia sports' legends. Charlie also enjoyed golf, and was a member of the Hershey's Mill Golf Club, and had been a member of the Philadelphia Country Club for more than 55 years. Until the final days of his life, he maintained his competitive and vibrant spirit through his avid bridge playing, driving himself to Penn's Table in West Chester for breakfast daily, followed by a trip to the West Chester YMCA for his coffee and social interaction. Charlie's mantra was, "success is accomplishing what you set out to do, doing it right, and then improving upon it". With that mantra, his spirit lives on among his surviving family members, his two daughters, Lynne Vogel Cox of Guthriesville, Joey Vogel Bement, and her husband Denny, of Valley Township, five grandchildren, Ned Bement, Colby Cox Miller, Collyn Bement Gilbert, Kern Cox, and Wylie Cox Bell, and nine great grandchildren.

Following private interment, a celebration of life will be held at the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Chapel, 625 Montgomery Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 11:00am. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Charlie's memory to: Bucknell University, 301 Market St., Suite 2, Lewisburg, PA 17837, or online at www.bucknell.edu/giving. Additionally, contributions may be made to the West Chester YMCA, 605 Airport Road, West Chester, PA 19380.

Douglas L. Wilson

CHERAW - Douglas L. Wilson passed away peacefully at his home in Cheraw, SC on November 18, 2016 at the age of 83. His funeral service will be held 1:00 PM, Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Cheraw, SC. Visitation will be in the church fellowship hall from noon until 1:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at 4:00 PM in New Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, New Zion, SC. Memorials can be made in honor of Douglas Wilson to the First United Methodist Church Parsonage Fund, 117 Third Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Mr. Wilson, eldest son of Douglas Lamar Wilson and Isla Dennis Wilson of Hebron, SC, was born on August 24, 1933. He graduated from Hebron High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics from Clemson College in 1959. He supported his alma mater and was a devoted Clemson Tigers fan his entire life. As a young man he was an avid quail hunter and outdoorsman and loved the Santee Cooper lakes. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Cheraw and its men’s Sunday School class for nearly fifty years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gailya Knowlton Wilson, his son Chris Wilson (Suzie) of Moncks Corner, SC, and a daughter, Elizabeth Wilson Cox of Murrells Inlet, SC. Also surviving are six grandchildren and step grandchildren: Christopher Wilson Jr., Eleanor Wilson, Knowlton Wilson, Andy Ferez, Nicolas Ferez, and Sofia Ferez.

Terry Parker Lear

CHERAW - Mrs. Terry Parker Lear, age 70, entered into rest on November 12, 2016. Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Pine Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Mark Phillips and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial to follow in the Brock’s Mill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lear was born April 13, 1946 in Cheraw, SC a daughter of the late Royce J. and Christine Short Parker. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working with children at St. Paul United Methodist Church Daycare and First Southern Methodist Church Daycare. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed reading, cooking for her family, and working word search puzzles.

In addition to her parents, Terry was also preceded in death by the love of her life, Rev. Harold Lear; and 1 great grandson, Master Dominic Bryce Sellers.

Survivors include her son, Wendell (Lori) Lear of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Robin Lear, Hannah Lear, and Hayden Lear; 2 great grandsons, Michael Justin Marsh, Jr. and Steven Sellers; 2 sisters, Nancy (Greg) White of Cheraw, SC and Patti Hancock of Cheraw, SC.

The family requests memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Lear to Pine Grove Baptist Church “Bus Fund” 293 Zoar Road, Chesterfield, SC or to the National Kidney Foundation, 508 Hampton St. #200, Columbia, SC 29201.

Shirley Wright Walton

CHERAW - Shirley Wright Walton, 82, died Friday, November 4, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late James Corrieton and Bertha Cordelia Wright. She was the widow of William Jones Walton, Jr. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. Mrs. Walton was a member and had served at a Circle Leader of the United Methodist Women. In 2012 she was the recipient of the Mission Service Award, given to her for generous commitment of time, dedicated service, loyal support, and love for the United Methodist Women, the church and the community. She was a dedicated nurse in Chesterfield County for 30 years. She enjoyed the beach, shag music and was a loyal member of her bridge club for 30 plus years. Most of all she loved being with her family.

Surviving her are her sons, William (Penny) J. Walton, III of Zurich, Switzerland, Todd (Lori) Wright Walton of Jacksonville, FL, Shirley (David) R. Roscoe of Chesterfield, SC, a sister, Dorothy W. Norton of Columbus, MS, grandchildren, Josh, Lauren, Matthew, David, Erin, great grandchildren, Savana, Brody, Alivia and Luke.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, a brother, James C Wright, Jr. and a sister, Virginia W. Allison.

The family received friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Burial followed the service at Old Saint David’s Cemetery.

Lucille Andrews

PATRICK - Funeral services for Lucille Lundy Tolson Andrews, 88, were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 in the chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Williams officiated with burial in Brown Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, PO Box 293 Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Mrs. Andrews died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Rosa Lewis Lundy. She was a lifelong member of Brown Springs Baptist Church where she led the choir for many years. Lucille retired from Patrick Sportswear where she was a seamstress. She was a devoted housewife that loved her family, enjoyed trips to the mountains, and going to Gene Watson concerts. She was affectionately known as "Granny" by her grandchildren. The family is grateful to the staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County for their devotion and care given to Mrs. Andrews.

Surviving are her daughters, Betty Jean (Bill) Billington of Bridge City, TX, Christine (Wade) Huggins of Hartsville, SC; son, Alvin (Mary) Tolson of Patrick, SC; grandchildren, Cody (Amy) Billington, Jodi Billington, Andy (Terri) Huggins, Burt (Leslie) Huggins, Holly (Clint) Patterson, Joshua Tolson, Lisa Lynn (Steven) Dooley, Ashley (Courtney) Tolson, Brandon Tolson; great-grandchildren, Sydney Billington, Kelsey Billington, Hunter Billington, Claire Stoddard, Alice Stoddard, Colin Huggins, Gavin Huggins, Jack Henry Huggins, Rivers Huggins, Brock Tolson, Henry Tolson, Ashlyn Dooley, Reagan Dooley, and Campbell Dooley.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Arthur Tolson and J.C. Andrews; daughter, Elizabeth Tolson Sowell; son, Johnny Burgan "J.B." Tolson.

Michael Davenport

Funeral services for Michael Davenport, 61, were held at 1:00 pm Friday, October 28, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. The family received friends following the service.
Mr. Davenport died Tuesday, October 25, 2016. Born in Greenville, SC, he was a son of the late William Oliver Davenport and Janie Davis McDonald. He was a long time resident of Cheraw and was previously employed with BGF Industries.
Surviving are his daughter, Marlena Mashburn of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Andrea Mashburn, Richard Mashburn, Austin Mashburn; great-grandchild, Savannah Cool; brothers, Larry (Nancy) Davenport, Johnny (Chris) McDonald, Gene McDonald; previous wife, Marsha Grooms, Bennettsville.
He was preceded in death by his step-father, Clarence McDonald.

Samuel Jervey DuPre

MOUNT PLEASANT - Samuel Jervey DuPre´ III, husband of Ann Hall Waring DuPre´ died peacefully on November 3, 2016 in Mount Pleasant, SC. The family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jervey DuPre´ were invited to attend the graveside services in Old St. David’s Cemetery, Cheraw, SC on Monday, November 7, 2016 at one o’clock. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at two o’clock in St. Philip’s Church, Charleston, SC.

Mr. DuPre´ was born May 22, 1945, in Bennettsville, SC, a son of Samuel Jervey DuPre´, Jr. and Blanche Kinsey Evans DuPre´. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from The Citadel. While serving in the US Navy in San Diego, California Mr. DuPre´ began his love for sailing and continued this pursuit in Charleston forging many lifelong friendships. He was a nuclear engineer and owner of Program Services, Inc. After retirement Mr. DuPre´ became an avid bicyclist. He enjoyed the sport and friends he made through it immensely. He was a member of St. Philip’s Church, Sea Island Yacht Club, Carolina Yacht Club, and the Huguenot Society of South Carolina.

He is survived by his wife of Mount Pleasant, SC; a daughter Elizabeth DuPre´ Brown and her husband Alton of Mount Pleasant, SC; one granddaughter Eliza DuPre´ Brown; a brother Thomas Evans DuPre´ and his wife Meri; a sister Mildred DuPre´ Kitchell and her husband Rusty.

Memorials may be made to St. David’s Cemetery Association, PO Box 1196, Cheraw, SC 29520, Thompson (formerly York Place-The Episcopal Home for Children), 6800 Saint Peter’s Lane, Matthews, NC 28105, or St. Philip’s Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401.

Michael Scott Laird

CHERAW - Michael Scott Laird, 48, died on Saturday, October 29, 2016. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He was born on July 1, 1968 in Morenci, Arizona to Richard Laird and Barbara Jean Cates. He is survived by: a son, Khristopher Dodgin (Leeann), Bozeman, MT; his parents, Richard Laird (Rosalie), Tuscan, AZ and Barbara Jean Cates (Fred Gert), Cheraw, SC; three grandchildren; a step brother, Joel Martin, Denver, CO and two step sisters, Laura Luxor of New York and Cathy Poole, Denver, CO

Willie Ray Lear

CHESTERFIELD - Willie Ray Lear was the fifteenth child, and last survivor, born to William Alec Lear and Clara Elizabeth Hancock Lear on May 15, 1936, and died on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the age of 80.

He had a varied working career which included Lear’s IGA, Life of Georgia Insurance Company, J.P. Stevens, Hennis Freight, and retired with 28 years of service with the Department of Agriculture: Soil Conservation Service.

Ray was a faithful member of Chesterfield Baptist Church, Fellowship Sunday School Class, choir, deacon, and the S.C. National Guard. He worked many hours helping Chesterfield County Rural Water Company get established along highway # 9.

Ray loved music, the outdoors, horses, reading, farming and socializing. He helped take care of his mother for many years and was a beloved son-in-law to Sara Belle Phillips.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sara Lear; one daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Lear Walker, one grandson, Vaughn Lear Walker; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial services for the life of Willie Ray Lear were held at 4:00 PM Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Chesterfield Baptist Church by Pastor Dennis Burton and Phillip C. Caulder, Jr. The family greeted friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

William D. 'Bill' Matthews Sr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. William D. “Bill” Matthews, Sr. age 87, entered into rest on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at his home. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at St. Paul United Methodist Church by Pastor Bruce Adams and Phillip C. Caulder, Jr. with burial to follow in the Chesterfield Cemetery. The family will host a reception and greet friends immediately following the committal service in the fellowship hall of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mr. Matthews was born June 21, 1929 in Scranton, SC and graduated from Manning High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Clemson University in 1950 and his Master's degree from the University of North Carolina.
For many years Mr. Bill taught and coached at Chesterfield High School. He was the coach of the 1963 baseball state championship team. He served as principal at Chesterfield High School from 1969 to 1972. Mr. Matthews later became the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education and served on the Chesterfield County School Board. Among his other accomplishments, Mr. Bill gave 20 years of service to the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce and received the W. D. Craig Lifetime Service Award.

Mr. Bill loved his God and his church, and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was also an avid Clemson fan. He supported and cheered on his Clemson Tigers for many years.
Mr. Bill touched many people in the Chesterfield area through his teaching, love, and dedication to his community. His family and community will miss him dearly. We are blessed to have had Mr. Bill in our lives
Survivors include the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Maxie Jewell Matthews; two children, William David Matthews Jr. and wife Mary Alice Matthews, and Maria Anne Matthews; three grandchildren, Melissa Matthews Martin and husband Eric Michael Martin, Leslie Anne Matthews, and Mary Elizabeth Matthews; two great-grandchildren, William David Martin and Emily Jean Martin; one brother, Bobby Matthews and wife Mary Anne Matthews of Sumter, South Carolina; and nieces and nephews.

Katrina Pigg Sturgis

MONROE, N.C. - Katrina Pigg Sturgis, born April 21, 1928, passed away on November 4, 2016. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Charles Neil Sturgis; one daughter, Kathy Sturgis Ward (Ronnie) of Winchester VA; one son, Charles Neil Sturgis, Jr. (DyAnn) of Indian Land, SC; one brother, Billy Pigg (Bobbie) of Pageland SC. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Jason Sturgis (Ashley) of Stallings NC, Lindsey Nance (Michael) of Unionville NC, Megan Coan (Matt) of Monroe NC, Beth Forsyth (Mac) of Alexandria VA, Allan Bryarly (Staci) of Phoenixville, PA. She is also survived by her seven precious great-grandchildren, Chloe Nance, Carter Nance, Carly Coan, Patrick Forsyth, Nathan Forsyth, Mikey Forsyth, Violet Bryarly, sister-in-law Sue Pigg of Virginia Beach, Va., and brother-in-law Jimmie Attaway Rivers of Mt. Croghan. Mrs. Sturgis is also survived by her caregivers, her three angels, Karen Rushing, Daphney Blout and Mable Glenn. These three ladies made her life better every day and took wonderful care of her. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, especially Mike Secrest and Farris Pigg who thought of her as a second mother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, B.C. Pigg and Vennie Pigg; one sister, Fanell Rivers; and one brother, Rance Pigg.
Mrs. Sturgis was a lifelong Christian and active member of Central United Methodist Church of Monroe until illness made it difficult to attend services. Professionally, Mrs. Sturgis was a registered nurse for 44 years at Union Memorial Hospital (later named CMC Union) and was Operating Room Supervisor for 35 of those years.
Mrs. Sturgis was active in her community for many years, helping the elderly at The Ellen Fitzgerald home and was giving of her nursing skills wherever and whenever needed. In 1994 she was awarded Citizen of the Year for her "outstanding achievement and unselfish service in the betterment of our community."
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Sturgis was a friend to all who knew her. Admired by many and loved by all. Katrina, Mama, Mimmie, Aunt Tiny, Sis will be forever missed.
The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2016, at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Sturgis was held 11 a.m. Monday, November 7, 2016, at Central United Methodist Church of Monroe. Interment followed in Lakeland Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist or to Hospice of Union County. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is honored to be serving the family of Mrs. Sturgis.
