SOCIETY HILL - Mary Jane Keith Flowers, 64, died Friday March 17, 2017. Born in Hartsville, SC she was the daughter of the late James Hoover and Bernice Virginia Freeman Keith. She was a nurse and was the Director of Nursing for the Wilson Group.

Surviving are her sons, Jamie (Beth) Flowers of Society Hill, SC, Derrick (Scott) Flowers, of Charlotte, NC, a brother, Robert L. “Robbie” Keith of Society Hill, SC, grandchildren, Avah Claire Flowers and Claudia Elizabeth Flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, her brothers, Danny Keith and James E. “Eddie” Keith.

The family received friends 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 pm, Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joyce Gatlin

JEFFERSON - Joyce Gatlin, 72, died on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 2:30PM from the Sandy Grove United Methodist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born December 1, 1944, in Chesterfield, SC to the late Roy and Collera Catherine Hough Louallen. Survivors: a son, Timothy Vincent Covington; two grandchildren, Kayveon Bracy and Saniya Bracy; two nephews, George Louallen, Jr. and Lemuel Louallen; a niece, Shopia Bracy (Don); four aunts, Amanda Jackson, Arlevia Brumfield, Nelma Louallen and Queenie Louallen; two uncles, James B. Hough and David Sellers. Flemming Funerals-Pageland. .

Jillian McKelvy Johnson

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Jillian McKelvy Johnson, Ph.D. (77) died Wednesday, March 8th at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville, North Carolina. She has been a resident of Asheville for nine years after retiring from Spalding University in Louisville, KY. She was married to K.W. Johnson of the Teals Mills community in Chesterfield County for nearly 35 years. She and K.W. have property (Johnson Experimental Forest) at 4788 Teals Mill Road, Chesterfield, S.C.

An accomplished professor and administrator Jillian shared her abilities, talents and spirit in Albuquerque, Melbourne, Seattle, Anchorage, and Louisville. One of her professional accolades was the creation and implementation of an accredited MSW at Spalding, University. Travelling around the world, her intelligence, quick wit and passion for the outdoors created a web of friendships everywhere she went. Her many friends and family have felt and commented on the void in the world her passing has created.

Jillian is survived by her husband, K.W. Johnson, sons Jeffrey and Michael (Heather), two grandchildren and siblings, Rebecca McKelvy of Fletcher, NC, Michael McKelvy of Denver, CO and Eric McKelvy of Denver, CO.

Wendy Murvin Joines

CHESTERFIELD - Wendy Murvin Joines, 55, died on Sunday, March 5, 2017. Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 1:30PM from the Word of Life Fellowship Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Chesterfield Community Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. She was the daughter of Sadie M. Murvin born on December 17, 1961 in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: her husband, Min. David Joines; a daughter, Renesha S. Johnson, Chesterfield, SC and a sister, Beverly Cranford (Dewayne), Chesterfield, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Darlene L. Rackley

CHESTERFIELD - Darlene L. Rackley, 65, died on Friday, March 10, 2017. A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1PM from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Chesterfield, SC. She was born October 7, 1951 in Chesterfield, SC to the late Julius and Pauline Sinclair Little. Survivors: her husband, Richard Rackley, Sr.; a step-son, Richard Rackley, Jr., Snellville, GA; five siblings, Bobby Lee Little (Emily), Morven, NC, Jimmy Lee Little, Cheraw, SC, Julius W. Little (Louise), Upper Marlboro, MD, Essielene L. Lofton, Seattle, WA, and Cherilynn L. Smith, Seattle, WA. Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Lucille L. Redding

RUBY - Lucille L. Redding, 82, died on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 10AM from the Rock Spring Missionary Baptist Church, Ruby, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born April 17, 1934, in Chesterfield, SC to the late Owen B. and Annie J. Sellers. Survivors: her husband, James Redding; stepsons, Kenny Redding and Vance Redding, Cleveland, Ohio; siblings, George Sellers, Huntersville, NC; James Bryant, Hamden, CT and Viola Nelson, New Haven, CT. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield.

Maryann Bergeron

CHERAW – Maryann Bergeron, 84, died Thursday, March 09, 2017. Born in Dearborn, MI she was the daughter of the late Richard Henry and Lily Mary Beatrice Lutey. She was a member of Lake Square Presbyterian Church of Leesburg, FL, and currently attended Cheraw First Baptist Church with her family. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing.

Surviving is her husband, Joseph Bergeron (married 64 years) of Cheraw, SC, a son, Mark A. (Jeanette) Bergeron of Monroe, GA, a daughter, Ruth (Bill) Carter of Cheraw, SC, a brother, Earl (Beatrice) Lutey of Byron Center, MI, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, a son, Paul E. Bergeron and a great grandchild, Carter Franklin Howiler.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Cheraw First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Before the service from 2:00PM to 2:45PM, the family received friends in the foyer of the family life center.

Evelyn James Fowler

CHERAW - Evelyn James Fowler, 93, died Friday, March 10, 2017. Born in Conway, SC, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Athalia Mattie Owens James. She was the widow of James Fowler and formerly the widow of Frank Davidson. She was a member of Free Worship (Cheraw, SC). She loved being with her family, her “beach family, ” and watching her three great- grand-girls.

Surviving is her daughter, Lib (Hugh) Livingston. grandchildren, Christie (Ross) Davis, Kylie (Bobby) Driggers, Ian Livingston, great grandchildren, Sage Driggers, Kinley Davis, Georgia Driggers, a sister, Mae (Lacy) Pridgen all of Cheraw, SC, a brother-in-law, Claude “Teet” Chapplear of Charlotte, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands listed above, also, sisters Nina Chapplear, Ethel Jacobs and Cat Sellers.

Plans to be announced at a later date.

Frances McRae Laney

CHERAW - Frances McRae Laney, 94, entered into rest Sunday, March 5, 2017. Born in Bennettsville, SC, February 10, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ruth Jennings McRae. She was the widow of Thomas Belton Laney. She was a nurse and a graduate of Columbia College. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others as a registered nurse at Chesterfield General Hospital, Chesterfield County Health Department and later retired from Burlington Industries. Mrs. Laney was a lifelong member of The First United Methodist Church of Cheraw, was a member of the choir and an MYF leader for many years. She was an avid football, baseball, and basketball fan and enjoyed fishing, swimming and camping.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above, a sister Eleanor Kornahrens of Dillon, SC, a brother Walter McRae of Charlotte, NC and a grandson Charlie Scott Laney of Cheraw, SC.

She is survived by her sons, Tommie (Nellie) Laney of Cheraw, SC, Scott (Gail) Laney of Cheraw, SC and Roachel (Jo Ann) Laney of Boone, NC, grandchildren, Lauren Tipton, Blair Waters, Josh Laney and Adam Laney, step grand-children, Jason Bryant, Josh Bryant, and Duncan Bryant, five great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at The First United Methodist Church of Cheraw. Burial followed at Old St. David’s Cemetery in Cheraw. The family received friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM prior to the service in the Caston Building of the Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church, The Charlie Scott Laney, Jr. Scholarship Fund, 117 Third Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.

William James Marcus Sr.

Rock Hill – William James Marcus Sr., 62, formerly of Darlington, SC, lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday March 7th, 2017, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Jacqueline Muldrow Marcus, his children Quiana Marcus Wright, William James Marcus Jr., and Tamaren Lucille Marcus, and his five grandchildren Raphael Jr., Christopher, Jordyn, William III, and Sydney. Services were held at Boatwright Chapel on Main in Darlington, SC on Sunday March 12th at 3:00 pm.

Francine Campbell Rivers

CHERAW – Francine Campbell Rivers, age 70 passed away after a long battle with Cancer on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at her home in Cheraw, SC surrounded by Family.
Born in Columbia, SC on December 11, 1946, she is the daughter of Lila Branham Campbell and the late Edward Lewis Campbell Sr. A graduate of Columbia College and a retired employee with the State of South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Center with over 20 years of service. Mrs. Rivers was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Cheraw, SC. Francine enjoyed traveling, reading, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Johnny Rivers of Cheraw, SC; sons John Blake Rivers of Cheraw, SC; John Lewis Rivers IV of Scottsdale, AZ; a daughter Wendy Rivers (Scott) Johnson of Cheraw, SC; step son, John Randall (Elaine) Greene of Lake Norman, NC; 3 grandchildren, Holden Floyd, Bailey Floyd and Ciera Grant; mother Lila Campbell of Columbia, SC; brother, Edward Lewis Campbell Jr of Copenhagen, Denmark; and sister, Sharon Campbell of Columbia, SC.
The Family received friends at 3pm, Thursday, March 9, 2017 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 1607 State Rd Cheraw, SC. Celebration of Life Service were held shortly after at 4pm by Bishop George Boan. Her son John L Rivers IV delivered the Eulogy during the Memorial Service.
In Lieu of Flowers, the Family requests that Memorials be made to “The Caring House” (Partnership with Duke Cancer Institute) 2625 Pickett Road, Durham, NC 27705.

Mrs. Beatrice DeLoach

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7

Mrs. Beatrice DeLoach was born on September 30, 1921 to the late Samuel and Elizabeth Jones Huggins. She peacefully took her rest on December 15, 2014 with family and friends by her side.

Mrs. Beatrice was a graduate of the public school system in Georgetown County, South Carolina. At an early age, she attended St. John Baptist Church in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Later in life, she met and married the late James E. DeLoach. Their union was blessed by God for over 40 years. They later moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they became faithful members of the Church of Christ until their health declined.

Mrs. Beatrice, affectionately called “Aunt Bea” by all who knew her, was a loving, compassionate, and wise woman. She and her husband were the proprietors of the DeLoach Daycare, where she provided tender care for many of children. Every child at the daycare had the opportunity of experiencing her sweetness, kindness and genuine love. Parents would leave their children with Aunt Bea, knowing they were in a safe and nurturing environment. She loved each child as if they were her own.

Aunt Bea never met a stranger and was often admired for her beautiful eyes and smile. She would always offer words of encouragement. If there was a need for correction, she would give that too. She loved to go fishing with friends as often as she could on Saturday mornings. When not fishing, she and Ms. Bessie could be found at one of the many garage sales. Aunt Bea never had a negative word to say about anyone. She was the epitome of a “godly woman.”

Aunt Bea was preceded in death by two sons, Millage and Larry DeLoach; and two brothers, Samuel Huggins, Jr. and Robert Huggins.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories are her daughter, Cortina L. DeLoach of Columbia, SC; two sons, Bernard and Tyrone DeLoach both of Columbia, SC; a grandson reared in the home, Larenzo DeLoach of Columbia, SC; a very special and loving niece, Sarah Lee Brannon of Columbia, SC; three daughters-in-law; Valarie Davidson, Audrey DeLoach and Ellaweas DeLoach all of Columbia, SC; two cousins, Mrs. Blachie Dewitt and Ms. Claira Chestnut both of Conway, SC; two special daughters, Miranda Greene and Viola Walker both of Columbia, SC; seven grandchildren, Tyronda, Aubray, Brittany, Angelicia, Kayla, Tevin, Kerrie and Kristian all of Columbia, SC; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Kathy S. Welsh

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Kathy S. Welsh, age 64, entered into rest on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at her home. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Faith Presbyterian Church of Cheraw by Pastor Joe Arnold and Brent Taylor with burial following in the Chesterfield Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Welsh was born January 22, 1953 in Greensboro, NC a daughter of the late Jerry B. and Edith Mae Smothers. She was a graduate of Cheraw High School and attended Chesterfield-Marlboro Tech and Coker College. Mrs. Welsh retired from Cheraw Dyeing and Finishing with 25 years of service. Following her retirement, she enjoyed working with Kevin Lear on Main. A member of Faith Presbyterian Church, Kathy will be remembered as a sweet and kind lady who was complimentary of everyone she met. She had an eye for home decor and loved to bake. Kathy especially enjoyed spending time with her friends and neighbors.
In addition to her parents, Kathy was also preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Sylvia Douglas Welsh.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Welsh of the home; brother, Jerry Michael Smothers of Cheraw, SC; nephews, Kirklee Smothers and Tyler Smothers, Bryan (Lindsey) Scott of Pamplico, SC; father-in-law, Charles Welsh of Chesterfield, SC; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and Kenny Scott of Chesterfield, SC; great niece, Katelyn Scott; great nephew, Jace Scott; numerous cousins; and her beloved pet, “Baby”.

Jefferson - Marion Keith Myers, 53, died Monday, February 27, 2017. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 1pm from the Clyburn Center, Pageland, SC. He was born to the late Rosa Lee Allen and Bennie Evans in Chesterfield County, SC on September 23, 1963. Survivors: his children, Kimani Myers, Pageland, SC and Marques Little, Wadesboro, NC; three sisters, Cynthia Lockhart (Scottie), Jefferson, SC, Meshell Blakeney (Billy), Jefferson, SC, Lakeshia Garnett of Maryland; four brothers, Clemson Allen, Jr., Pageland, SC, Lamont Allen (Ann), Pageland, SC, Thomas Allen (Cholé), Columbia, SC, and Michael Evans of New York. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland.

Mattie Kirkland Bailey

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Mattie Kirkland Bailey, 84, died Sunday, February 19, 2017. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2pm from the Mt. Elon United Methodist Church, Jefferson, SC. She was born to the late Lawrence and Ethel Kirkland on May 29, 1932 in Angelus, SC. Survivors: two daughters, Sharon Crawford (Derrick), Charlotte, NC, and Ethel Washington (Marcel), Jefferson, SC, three sons; William McCorkle (Gloria), Polkton, NC, Jerry McCorkle of New York and Antonio Williams (Felicia), Jacksonville, FL, a companion, Albert Williams, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister; Azalee Meadows, Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland.

Margaret Dalphine Quick Hicks

CHERAW - Mrs. Margaret Dalphine Quick Hicks, age 82, entered into rest on Monday, February 20, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Thursday, February 23, 2017 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home with entombment following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hicks was born February 15, 1935 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Alvin and Ella Turner Hall. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and was a talented seamstress. Mrs. Hicks was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Harvey Lee McIntyre and Alvin Lee McIntyre; daughter, Nezzie Castellino; 2 brothers, Bobby Hall and Charles Hall; and 1 sister, Beaulah Ward.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne Hicks of the home; children, Lee (Steve) Ray of Chesterfield, SC, Raymond McIntyre of Bennettsville, SC, Earline (Jimmy) Grissom, and Brenda Cribb both of Wallace, SC, Denise (Ernest) Tucker of Rock Hill, SC, Brenda (Donnie) Martin, and Nicole (Daniel) Freeman both of Bennettsville, SC, and Mitchell McIntyre of PA; 24 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Victoria Taylor of New Bern, NC; numerous nieces and nephews.

Peggy Hunt

LEXINGTON – Peggy Hunt went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, February 25, 2017. A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Southland Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Oakwood Baptist Church, 3520 Mineral Springs Rd., Lexington, SC 29073 or Gideons International, PO Box 723, Aiken, SC 29802.

Mrs. Hunt was born December 27, 1936. She was a daughter of the late Weldon D. Sellers and Olive Brock Sellers and step-daughter of Irene Sellers. She loved her church, the Bible and her family. At age seven she was deeply affected by a car wreck that claimed the life of her mother, maternal uncle and infant sister. She loved to trace family lineage in the Chesterfield Genealogical Chapter. She doted on her children and grandchildren and fastidiously kept house. She was a fiercely loyal wife, mother and friend who will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dewey William Hunt of Lexington; sons, Eddie Hunt (Karen) of Aiken, Richard Hunt of Lexington and Tony Hunt (Fran) of West Columbia; niece, Debbie Lemacks of Lexington; grandchildren, Jessica Ray, Andrew Hunt, Melanie Schumpert and Alicia Lawson, as well as four great-grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters. She is preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
