Ruth S. Starnes

MONROE, N.C. – Ruth S. Starnes, 87, entered the church triumphant Feb. 9, 2017. Visitation was at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe, N.C., Tuesday, Feb. 14, followed by a memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Turner Presbyterian Church, 4802 Lancaster Highway, Monroe, N.C. 28112; or the Union County Public Library, 316 E. Windsor St., Monroe, NC 28112.

Ruth received her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Pfeiffer University. She had an accounting practice in Monroe where she was a member of the N.C. Society of Accountants, serving as secretary and president of the Charlotte chapter and member of the NCSA Board of Directors. She became a CPA and retired from the N.C. State Auditor’s Office.

Ruth was active in church, political, civic and business organizations, serving as a youth leader and Bible teacher in her church for decades; president of the Union County (N.C.) Democratic Women, 8th Congressional District Chair of NCDW, state treasurer and two-time state president of NCDW, and chair of the nominating committee of the National Federation of Democratic Women.

Ruth chaired the State Legislative Committee and was a member of the National Legislative Committee of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, president of the Monroe Chapter of Pilot Club International, chaired the Union County Board of Social Services, was a member of the N.C. State Board of Human Resources and president of Prospect PTA.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Thomas S. and Ruby Stewart Starnes; husband: Dudley Starnes; brothers: Howard, Robert and Carson Starnes; and grandchild: Rebecca Yates.

Survivors include two daughters: Carol “Lucy” (Dr. William) Comer of Salisbury, N.C., and the Rev. Joan (the Rev. Bo) Yates of Monroe; a sister: Dr. Jodie Trotter of Morgantown, W.V.; a brother: Bruce (Vicki) Starnes of Pageland; three grandchildren: Maxwell Hess, Casey (Shayne) Grimsley, Julia (finacé Phil Paynter) Rogers; and five great-grandchildren: Emma, Olivia, Lilly, Ethan and Jackson.

Shirley J. Steen

WALLACE - Mrs. Shirley J. Steen, age 68, entered into rest on Thursday, February 9, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Wallace Baptist Church by Pastor John L. Melton, III with burial to follow in the Steen Family Cemetery, Bennettsville, SC. The family received friends 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Wallace Baptist Church.

Mrs. Steen was born September 23, 1948 in Cheraw, SC a daughter of the late Oscar and Clarine Kissiah Johnson. She was a retired employee of Weller Industries with nearly 30 years of service and a faithful member of Wallace Baptist Church, where she was a former choir member and always helped out in the kitchen. She loved her Lord, her church, her family, and especially time spent with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her brother, Raymond “Red” Johnson and sister-in-law, Celia Johnson.

Survivors include her husband, Jeff Steen of the home; 2 sons, Buddy (Amber) Steen of Cheraw, SC and Shane (Kiera) Steen of Wallace, SC; 4 grandchildren, Bradley Steen, Alexandra Steen, Brayden Steen, and Kieran Steen; 3 brothers, Olin Johnson of Cheraw, SC, Danny (Shirley) Johnson of Conway, SC, and Jimmy (Laura) Johnson of Wallace, SC; 2 sisters, Evelyn (Lee) Fulton of Chesterfield, SC, and Alice (Larry) Kuhns of Darlington, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Wallace Baptist Church, P.O. Box 4174, Wallace, SC 29596.

Edward Eddie W. Stubbs

CHERAW - Edward “Eddie” W. Stubbs, 87, died Sunday, February 5, 2017. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late Arthur Bernard Stubbs, Sr. and Clara Powell Stubbs. He was a US Army Veteran. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was a KA. Mr. Stubbs was a member of First United Methodist Cheraw, SC. He was a charter (lifetime) member of the Cheraw Rescue Squad. He also served on the Cheraw Fire Department and with the Chesterfield County EMS. He taught countless young people how to swim and was a Life Guard at “Cheraw Beach.” He was an avid Gamecock Fan.

Surviving are his sons, Keith Stubbs of Cheraw, SC, Terrell Stubbs of West Columbia, SC, a sister, Frances Puryear of Elizabeth City, NC, grandchildren, Allie Burke Stubbs and Robert Benson Stubbs.

A graveside service was held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Old St. David’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. The family received friends following the service.

Dorothy Mae Hunter Teal

CHERAW - Dorothy Mae Hunter Teal, 91, died Sunday, February 5, 2017. Born in Lancaster County SC she was the daughter of the late Farris Hunter and Mary Alma Faulkenberry Hunter. She was the widow of Charles E. Teal, Sr. She attended Wingate College and was a graduate of Furman University. She was a retired school teacher having taught in Marlboro County School District and the Chesterfield County School District (24+years of service). She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Mrs. Teal enjoyed yard work and gardening. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved the children in the community that she took care of over the years and was lovingly known by many as “Granny.”

From the February 25, 1949 marriage of Charles and Dorothy three sons were born into the family. Her surviving family are sons, Charles (Janet) E. Teal, Jr. of Cheraw, SC, Paul W. Teal of Lexington, SC, David (Cheryl) F. Teal of Clayton NC, 8 Grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, brothers, Maxwell Hunter, Donald Hunter, and a granddaughter Cheryl Teal Lukac.

Liston E. Ard

CHERAW - Mr. Liston E. Ard, age 84, entered into rest on Thursday, February 2, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 5, 2017 from the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Rev. Brad Lewis and Rev. Brandon Ard with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 1:30 – 3:00 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Ard was born July 4, 1932 in Hemingway, SC a son of the late Flemon Lanco and Hattie Bell Ard. He was a retired employee of Cheraw Yarn Mill. Mr. Ard was a faithful member of Middendorf Church of God, where he was affectionately known by everyone as “Pa”. Liston was a talented pianist, who enjoyed tuning and working on pianos, and travelled with the Ard Family singing group for over 20 years. He was a godly man who loved his family and enjoyed traveling and fishing.

In addition to his parents, Liston was also preceded in death by his siblings, Flemon Jacob Ard, Flemon Lanco Ard, Jr., Dorothy Mae Ard McDonald, Frances Louise Ard Estridge, Leverne Ard, and Earterline Ard; and 1 granddaughter, Allison Ard.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rosie Belle Ard of the home; children, Ronald Ezelle Ard and wife, Bonnie, Kenneth D. Ard and wife, Pam, and Anne Lewis and husband, William all of Cheraw, SC; 7 grandchildren, Gwynn Lewis of Cheraw, SC, Chris (Tonya) Ard of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Rev. Brad (Melanie) Lewis of Florence, SC, Bryan (Meredith) Ard of Moore, SC, Rev. Brandon (Megan) Ard of Cheraw, SC, and Brooke Ard of Rock Hill, SC; 7 great grandchildren, Ashley Anderson, Savannah Dover, Luke Lewis, Nicholas Ard, Tanner Lewis, Owen Lewis, and Ben Ard; 1 brother, Herman Ard of Cleveland, TN; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Wilson Broadwater Jr.

WALLACE - Kenneth Wilson Broadwater, Jr., 73, peacefully went to be with the Lord on January 29, 2017. He was born in Hannah, Wyoming December 30, 1943 to the late Kenneth Wilson Broadwater, Sr. and Dolly G. Broadwater Linvell.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Brigman Broadwater, daughter, Shannon Halma (Keith Helms) of Wallace, SC, sons, Mike (Annie) Broadwater of Wallace, SC, Keith (Tammy) Broadwater of Bradenton, FL, six grandchildren, Dylan, Tyler, Kenny, Michael, Abigail and Amanda, sister-in-law, Elaine (Shuford) Quick, brother-in-law, L.W. (Nancy) Brigman. He is also survived by five of his siblings, Don Broadwater, Raymond Linvell, Mary Louise Howard, Mollie Everett and Sandy Carter, numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. He was also an avid gunsman and had a passion for nature. He spent hours observing local deer, ducks and rabbits run wild in his back yard. He was the proprietor of Broadwater’s Wrecker Service for many years where he enjoyed fellowship with friends and family. But his true passion in life was being Papa to his grandchildren and two puppies Suzie and Ginger. Despite all of the trials life threw his way he refused to accept them as a disability. His determination and will always outshined his challenges.

The family invited all of Ken’s friends to come and celebrate his life with them. Visitation was held 3:00 PM Thursday, February 2, 2017 at New Hope United Methodist Church, 6761 Hwy 1 N., Wallace, SC 29596.

A funeral service was held 4:00 PM, Thursday, February 2, 2017 at New Hope United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

David Ray ‘Jiggs’ Clark Jr.

MCBEE - Mr. David Ray “Jiggs” Clark, Jr., age 81, entered into rest on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 3:00 PM Friday, February 3, 2017 at McBee Baptist Church by Dr. Richard Clark and Rev. John Helms with burial following in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. The family greeted friends from 1:00 – 3:00 PM Friday, prior to the service in the church sanctuary of McBee Baptist Church.

Mr. Clark was born February 22, 1935 in Jefferson, SC a son of the late David Ray Clark and Annie Bell Cunningham Clark. He was a retired employee of Carolina Power and Light, H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant and co-owner of The Company Store and Restaurant, where he was the official greeter. Mr. Clark was a faithful member of McBee Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, deacon, choir member, former Sunday school teacher, and director. He also served the local school board on the McBee Advisory Coucil for 20 years. Mr. Clark enjoyed gardening and was a true people person. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be remembered as the “family caretaker” and devoting his retirement years to raising his grandchildren in “Pa-Pa’s Finishing School.”

In addition to his parents, Jiggs was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Ramsey and William “Billy” Clark; and sister-in-law, Marietta Helms.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 58 years, Lou Ellen Helms Clark of the home; son, Rodney M. (Kaye) Clark of Chesterfield, SC; Shauna Clark (Tony) Newell of Jefferson, SC and Stephanie Clark (Chris) Tiller of McBee, SC; grandchildren, Rodney Clark, Jr. of Florence, SC, Sydney Newell (T.J.) Baker, Christian (Caitlin) Tiller both of McBee, SC, Vincent Newell of Florence, SC, and Chloe Clark Tiller of McBee, SC; great grandchild, Eliza Rae Baker of McBee, SC; brother, Mody A. (Jean) Clark of Jefferson, SC; sisters-in-law, Kathy Clark of Columbia, SC and Betty Clark of Atlanta, GA; brothers-in-law, Johnny (Von) Helms and Brice “Jackie” Helms; 2 aunts, Eloise Cunningham and Charlotte Middleton; nieces, Chanda Helms (Jacob) Crout, Tonya Clark Van Putten, and Kelly Clark; nephews, Rev. John (Susan) Helms, Johnny (Angela) Helms, Dr. Richard A. (Jackie) Clark, Mark W. Clark, Scott (Linda) Clark, Rev. Tony (Kim) Clark, Randy Clark, Whit (Megan) Clark, Will (Dianne) Clark; also numerous great nieces and great nephews whom he loved to come see him and play.

Carlton R. Griggs

WALLACE - Carlton R. Griggs, 89, died Friday, February 3, 2017. Born in Wallace, SC he was a son of the late Henry Walker and Bernice Collie Griggs. He was the widower of Ellen Griggs (married for 60 years.) He was a US Army Veteran. He was a past member of the Cheraw Fire Department. Mr. Griggs was a Mason (Lodge #15 Cheraw). He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. He was a retired Supervisor from J. P. Stevens (30+ years). He enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his family. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving are his sons, Michael R. Griggs of Wallace, SC, Jennings B. (Debbie) Griggs of Wallace, SC, Danelia (Terry)Young of Lake Wylie, SC, Mary (Ken) Johnson of Wallace, SC, a brother, Walker Jennings Griggs of Wallace, SC, 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.

Anna Elisabeth Braun Owens

CHERAW - Anna Elisabeth Braun Owens, 85, beloved wife of the late Command SGM Winston C. Owens, retired US Army, of Cheraw, SC, passed away in her home Monday, January 30th, 2017 peacefully surrounded by loving friends and family.

Elisabeth “Lib” is survived by a son, Dr. Richard Owens (Susan) of Cheraw, SC, a special niece whom she loved as a daughter, Vicki Ratliff (Bill) of Ruby, SC, her sister, Maria Hitzel of Rödermark, Germany, brother Hans Braun (Elisabeth) of Münster, Germany, and brother Theo Braun (Helga) of Münster, Germany. She was also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Stockdill (Jay) of Lakeside, MT, Jessica Shepard (Phillip) of Cheraw, SC, Wilson Owens (Sheena) of Sumter, SC, Anna Owens (John) of Cheraw, SC and Franklin Owens of Cheraw. She also had 4 greatgrandchildren: Owen Stockdill, Kiersten Shepard, Lawson Shepard, and Carter Shepard. She is preceded in death by her husband, SGM Winston C. Owens of McColl, SC and her son, Frank S. Owens of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Elisabeth was born on August 23rd, 1931 in Münster, Germany to Johann and Anna Elise Braun. She married her husband on March 29th, 1954 in Münster - Dieburg, Germany. In September 1954, they moved to Marlboro County, SC. The family lived in several places as Winston pursued his career in the Army including: Fort Bragg, NC, Fort McClellan, AL, Panama, and Memphis, TN. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting, painting, crafts, fishing, gardening, and raising German Shepherds. Her father also taught her to play the accordion. She was considered a master seamstress by many. She was a faithful member of Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, SC and later attended St. David’s after moving to Cheraw. She dedicated herself to volunteer work at St. David’s Thrift Shop and was one of the founding members of the Knit Witters.

A funeral service was held 2:00pm Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Cheraw, SC. A visitation was held in the chapel one hour prior to the service. George H. ‘Bogon’ Parker Sr.

SOCIETY HILL - George H. “Bogon” Parker, Sr., 74, died Saturday, February 4, 2017. Born in Chesterfield County he was a son of the late George Washington and Mary Johnson Parker. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed fishing, vegetable gardening and spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Frances Bryant Parker of Society Hill, SC, a son, Eugene Parker of Hartsville, SC, a daughter, Cindy (Mike) Parker Noel of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Kaitlyn Parker, Morgan Parker, Jade Johnson, Mica Dowdy, George “Zeke” Parker III, great grandchildren, Holden Dowdy, Sadie Grace Johnson, Jackson Byrd, brothers, Joel Purvis of Cheraw, SC, Bobby Purvis of Society Hill, SC, sisters, Virginia Hicks of Society Hill, SC and Patricia Coleman of Cheraw, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, a son, George Parker, Jr., brothers, Piper Parker, Jake Parker, Robbie Purvis, Randy Purvis, sisters, Rethea Chapman and Mary Joyce Grooms.

The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, February 6, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Tart Sowell

CHESTERFIELD - Margaret Tart Sowell died peacefully at her home in Chesterfield on January 31, 2017.

She was born on April 20, 1929, in Marion, South Carolina, the daughter of Addison Luther and Jessie McLaurin Tart, and was their last surviving child. She graduated from Marion High School and Winthrop College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She also earned a Masters of Education from Winthrop.

In 1950 she married T. F. Sowell and moved to his native Chesterfield. She worked her entire life in the Chesterfield County Schools as second grade teacher, public school music teacher, and speech pathologist. She directed the Glee Club at Chesterfield High School and the chancel choir at St. Paul United Methodist Church for forty years.

She was a member and President of the Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member and Regent of the Old Cheraws Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and T.F. were Chesterfield County Farm Family of the Year in the late 1960s.

She was the most graceful of people. She loved music and travel and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Margaret is survived by four children and their spouses--Biff and Jan Sowell (Columbia), Amy and James Braswell (Pendleton), Marshall and Betty Sowell (Chesterfield), and Mary Margaret and Scott Rosenbloom (Knoxville). She also is survived by grandchildren Christy Braswell and Jessica Braswell (Pendleton), Carson and Ashley Twombley (Beaufort), Jill Sowell (Louisville, CO), Evan and Jennifer Sowell (Pickens), Ben Mosrie and Ella Mosrie (Knoxville), and great grandchildren Mac Twombley, Will Twombley, EJ Sowell, Emmie Sowell, and Mattison Braswell. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters and by her husband of 64 years, T.F. Sowell.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Lessie Smith, Doris Ellis, and Crystal Smith for their loving care over the last two years.

Memorials can be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 West Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3rd at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield. The family hosted a reception and greeted friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
