Donald W. “Don Curtis

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Donald W. “Don” Curtis, age 72, entered into rest on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 4:00 PM Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Pine Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Mark Phillips with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 3:00 – 4:00 PM prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church.
Mr. Curtis was born November 20, 1944 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late William D. and Lera Moore Curtis. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. Don was also a member of Chesterfield Masonic Lodge #220. Mr. Curtis enjoyed cooking and grilling, and was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and loving on his dogs. His favorite pastime was spending time with his “babies” and was affectionately known to them as “Pa Jack”.
In addition to his parents, Don was also preceded in death by his son, Chad Curtis; and brother, David L. Curtis.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Trena B. Curtis of the home; daughters of the heart, Janice Tucker of Chesterfield, SC and Mary Jean Freeman of Ruby, SC; grandson, Daniel (Brittany) Tucker of Ruby, SC; great granddaughter, Jordan Faith Tucker; 2 sisters, Barbara Curtis Tucker and Anita C. Hunter of Chesterfield, SC; sister-in-law, Rachel Curtis of Chesterfield, SC; Granddaughters of the heart, Lauren Hewitt (Jaret) Beam of Winston Salem, NC, and Bessie Freeman of Ruby, SC; great-grandson of the heart, Lucas Beam.

Norma Jean Evans Davis

CHERAW - Norma Jean Evans Davis, 70, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 2PM from the St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born to the late Wilbert and Savannah Hinson Evans on August 21, 1946 in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: her husband, Arthur L. Davis, Jr.; two sons, Arthur Davis (Tina) and Tracey Davis (Seanne), Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Antonio Trémon Davis (Jasmine), Devonté Davis, O’Maury Davis and Chase Davis, Columbia, SC; a sister, Burnette Evans, Columbia, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Cheraw. .

Francis Walker Driggers

WALLACE - Francis Walker Driggers, 90, died, Thursday, January 26, 2017. Born in Marlboro County he was the last surviving sibling of the late Berry Benjamin and Wilma Driggers. He was the widower of Alice Lightbody “Granny” Driggers. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, serving on the Pastor-Parrish Relations Committee (Chairman) and as a Sunday School Teacher. He was a member of Woodman of the World and AM Vets. He was a US Army/National Guard Veteran. Mr. Driggers was retired from Crown, Cork and Seal. He enjoyed singing, fishing, gardening and coaching softball.

Surviving are his sons, Pastor, Donnie (Dianne) Driggers of Cheraw, SC, Doug (Jerry) Driggers of Wallace, SC, daughters, Christine Terry, Stacey (Bruce) Puette, Laura Driggers (Ralph Chavis) all of Wallace, SC, he cared deeply for his in-laws and treated them as his own children, ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a special friend and caregiver, Mildred Ratliff of Chesterfield, SC.

Preceded in death by his wife and parents listed above, also his siblings, Rufus Driggers, Edward Driggers, James Driggers, Ernest Driggers, Bill Driggers, Donald Driggers, Ethel Brigman, Elouise Alridge, Leora English, Helen Previtte and Louise Driggers.

The family received friends 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Wallace, SC.

Burial with military honors was in the church cemetery.

Preston Randolph ‘Bud’ Freeman Sr.

CHERAW - Mr. Preston Randolph “Bud” Freeman, Sr., age 82, entered into rest on Monday, January 23, 2017 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Zoar United Methodist Church by Pastor Ed Traxler. The family greeted friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
Mr. Freeman was born January 4, 1935 in Morven, NC a son of the late Will and Lillie Moore Freeman. He was a graduate of Zoar High School and was a member of the SC Army National Guard with over 20 years of service. Mr. Freeman was a faithful member of Zoar United Methodist Church and served on various committees throughout the years. He worked with Winn Dixie for many years and retired as meat manager. Bud was a loyal member of the Old – Timer’s Club of Bojangles in Cheraw. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching westerns, and was an avid NASCAR fan.
In addition to his parents, Bud was also preceded in death his son, Preston Randolph “Randy” Freeman, Jr.; brother, William C. Freeman, Jr.; and sister, Juanita Davis Tucker.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Beth R. Freeman of the home; daughter, Betsy (Greg) Roumillat of Summerville, SC; 2 sisters, Annelle F. Teal of Chesterfield, SC and Sylvia (Bob) Campbell – Cline of Cheraw, SC; 5 sisters-in-law, Rachel R. King and Peggy D. Robeson both of Chesterfield, SC, Rebecca R. Burch of Jefferson, SC, Helen R. Moore of McLeansville, NC, and Betty B. Freeman of Rock Hill, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family cordially requests that memorials be made to Zoar United Methodist Church “Backpack Ministry”, c/o Debbie Foote, 2472 Zoar Road, Cheraw, SC 29520.

CHESTERFIELD - Charles Hannah, Jr., 67, died on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2PM from Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born to the late Charles Hannah, Sr. and Bessie Louise Bittle Hannah, in Chesterfield, SC on January 19, 1949 in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: his wife, Mamie Love Hannah of the home; two daughters, Sherry Hannah (Reganald) Lindsey, Chesterfield, SC and Shanica Hannah (Corey) Short, Fishers, IN; two sisters, Bonnie Cash and Shirley Jackson Martin, Chesterfield, SC; two brothers, Casthederol Hannah and Gerald Hannah, Chesterfield, SC; four grandchildren, Khadijah Lindsey (Brian) Blackwell of Rockingham, NC, Reganald Lindsey, Jr., Chesterfield, SC, Corey Short, Jr., and Skylar Short, Fishers, IN. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Noella L. McFarlan

CHESTERFIELD - Noella L. McFarlan, 64, died on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 1PM from the Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the Drucilla A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. She was born to the late Arthur Leslie Lawrence and Mary White Lawrence on September 29, 1952 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Survivors: her husband, James; two daughters, Brandie and Bridget; a sister, Beulah Turnage (Thomas), Chesterfield, SC; two brothers, Richard Lawrence and Earl Lawrence (Nancy) Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Evelyn Delores Powe

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Funeral services for Evelyn Delores Powe, 78, were held Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Robinson AME Zion Church in Cheraw. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Services were also conducted on Tuesday, January 24th at Janes United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, New York prior to her interment in Cheraw. Ms. Powe died on Tuesday January 17th at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, New York.

Evelyn was born April 10, 1938 in Cheraw, South Carolina. She was the sixth of nine children born to the late Weldon Delano Powe, Sr. and Caroline Tillman Powe. She was educated in the Chesterfield County School System graduating Long High School in 1957.

Evelyn joined Robinson AME Zion Church at an early age and was a faithful member until she relocated to Brooklyn, NY where she joined Janes United Methodist Church. She was a Class Leader in church and active in several organizations including the South Carolina Club and the Pioneers Organization, a nationally recognized youth outreach and scholarship program.

In 1992, Evelyn retired from the New York Telephone Company, Manhattan, New York, after 28 years of service to the company. She also enjoyed devoting her time and love to family and friends.

She was preceded in death by two sisters: Helen Ruth Powe Ita and Arletha Elizabeth Powe Evans and brother Weldon Delano Powe, Jr.

Evelyn is survived by her son Ronald Anthony (Tiffina) Felder of Columbia, SC; granddaughters Jaelyn Faith and Ryann Elizabeth Felder; five sisters, Georgianna (Bernard) Simpson of Babylon, NY, Carolyn Powe, Victoria Powe Bittle, Peggy Yvonne Powe of Brooklyn, NY, and Annie Powe Davis of Cheraw; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law and a very special nephew, Jason J. Cooke of New York, NY.

New York services were entrusted to Armstrong Funeral Home of Brooklyn.

Garrett Douglas Rivers

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Garrett Douglas Rivers, age 88, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Memorial Services were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 29, 2017 at White Oak Presbyterian Church by Rev. Charlie Short. The family received friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Rivers was born June 22, 1928, in the White Oak community to Orland H. Douglas and Beaulah W. Douglas. After marrying Jathan W. Rivers and having two sons, they moved to Bennettsville, SC, where she owned and operated “Rivers Florist” for many years. The couple eventually retired and returned to live in Chesterfield County.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jathan W. Rivers; siblings, Mary D. Purvis, Lurline D. Jacobs, Azalee Clanton, Lawton P. Douglas, and her youngest son, Steven J. Rivers.
Survivors include her eldest son, Douglas M. Rivers and wife Kaye of Chesterfield, SC; sisters, Evelyn “Peg” Griggs of Chesterfield, SC, and Faye Chewning of Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. Rivers led an active life, loved people and traveling, and held a special place in her heart for her church. As an active member of White Oak Presbyterian Church, she was a part of the choir and church events, always greeting everyone with a warm smile and a kind word. The highlight of her life though was her grandchildren, Meredith Solomon of Virginia, John Douglas Rivers and Mary Kate “Katie” Rivers both of Chesterfield, SC, as she enjoyed watching them grow into adulthood.
She made an effort no matter the situation to live life to the fullest. After the passing of her husband and son, she strived to live a meaningful and exciting life, traveling to various places, yet always thinking of her home, Chesterfield and the people that made her happy. Mrs. Rivers will be remembered as precious in the hearts of many and her spirit will be greatly missed.
The family of Mrs. Rivers would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to each visitor and friend that took time to encourage Mrs. Garrett during her illness. A very special thank you to Dr. Alex Newsom and the staff of Cheraw Family Medicine; the staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County; the staff of McLeod – Cheraw Hospital; her White Oak church family; and the staff of Chesterfield Drug Company for their love, care and concern shown to Mrs. Rivers and her family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Mrs. Rivers’ memory to White Oak Presbyterian Church, 5386 Angelus Road, Ruby, SC 29741.

Alvin Brantley ‘Brant’ Thompson Jr.

CHERAW - Alvin Brantley “Brant” Thompson, Jr., 76, died, Monday, January 23, 2017. He was born in Rockingham, NC, the son of the late Alvin Brantley and Mary Eunice Swails Thompson. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. He was a US Army Veteran. He was an avid North Carolina Tarheel fan. He enjoyed spending time at Sunset Beach, NC, sitting on the porch in his rocker. He loved his family; the love of his life was his granddaughter, Ashlyn.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Rich Thompson of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Christy Thompson Nelson of Charlotte, NC, April Thompson Conklin of Apex, NC, a granddaughter, Ashlyn Rebecca Nelson. He is also survived by a brother, Gene Thompson of Birmingham, Alabama and a sister, Sue Dunn of Salisbury, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a sister Barbara Dunlap.

The family received friends 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Friday, January 27, 2017 in the Caston Parlor of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM, Friday, January 27, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Burial with military honors was held in Richmond Memorial Park, Rockingham, NC.

Memorials to: First United Methodist Church, 117 Third Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Daniel Lee Canter

WALLACE - Daniel Lee Canter, 44, died Saturday, January 14, 2017. Born in Greensboro he was a son of Ruth Ann Copple Canter and the late James Maurice Canter. He was a Machine Operator for INA Schaeffler Group of Cheraw, SC. He enjoyed fishing and racing.

Surviving is his wife, Amy Perhealth of Wallace, SC, sons, Bradley Canter of Greensboro, NC, Cody Canter of Elizabethtown, NC, Tyler Perhealth of Wallace, SC, daughters, Hali Canter of Bennettsville, SC, Ashley Perhealth of Wallace, SC, Brothers, David Canter of Winston-Salem, NC, Jeff Canter of Greensboro, NC, grandchildren, Zachary Perhealth and Allie Perhealth.

He was preceded in death by his father listed above, and a grandchild, Xander Perhealth.

The family received friends 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Monday, January 16, 2017 at Faith Fellowship Church, Wallace, SC.

A funeral service was held 3:00 PM, Monday, January 16, 2017 at Faith Fellowship Church, Wallace, SC. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mary Ruth White Moore

CHERAW - Mrs. Mary Ruth White Moore, age 88, entered into rest very peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church by Rev. John Howle and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mrs. Moore was born March 28, 1928 in Cheraw, SC a daughter of the late John Wiley and Virginia Davis White. She was a graduate of Cheraw High School Class of 1945. A devoted and faithful member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Mary Ruth was active in U.M.W., the Pleasant Grove Seniors Ministry, and was a member of the church choir for over 40 years. She enjoyed baking and was known for her delicious cakes.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ruth was also preceded in death by her son, John Preston Moore; 2 brothers, Charles Ray and James White; and 1 sister, Ethel Stipe.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Marion Leroy “Buddie” Moore of the home; 2 daughters, Mary Elizabeth Mumford and husband, R.D., and Susan King and husband, John both of Chesterfield, SC; Grandchildren, Matthew Moore Younger of Gulf Breeze, FL, Kelly Younger Aristiguieta and husband, Carlos of Atlanta, GA, Christopher King and Will King both of Chesterfield, SC; 2 brothers, C.L. White of Cheraw, SC, and Tony White of Greenville, SC; and 1 sister, Betty Watson of Sumter, SC.

The family cordially requests that memorials be made in Mrs. Moore’s memory to the Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205.

Owen Conrad Rivers Jr.

MT. CROGHAN - Mr. Owen Conrad Rivers, Jr., age 65, entered into rest on Thursday, January 19, 2017. Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Sunday, January 22, 2017 from the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Jason Terry and Brent Taylor with burial following in the Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 3:00 – 4:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home and anytime on Friday, January 20, 2017 at the home of Jason and Dawn Terry.

Mr. Rivers was born August 8, 1951 in Mt. Croghan, SC the son of the late Owen Conrad, Sr. and Vera Baucom Rivers. He was a former employee of Challenger Industries and attended Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church. Mr. Rivers was an avid Clemson Tigers fan and a long-time member of the IPTAY club. Conrad was a devoted son and caretaker for his mother for many years and in his spare time enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his special friend, Wanda Terry and her mother, Fenish Payne both of Kershaw, SC; his children of the heart whom he referred to as “His Couple, ” Jason and Dawn Terry and their children, Will and Brantlee Terry of Chesterfield, SC.

Ruth Plyler Rollings

JEFFERSON - Mrs. Ruth Plyler Rollings, age 95, entered into rest on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at her home. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Bethel Baptist Church by Pastor Michael Woods and Rev. Tim Williams with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church.

Mrs. Rollings was born November 4, 1921 in Monroe, NC a daughter of the late William Mark and Emma Isabelle Knight Plyler. She was in the first graduating class of Jefferson High School in 1940 and a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mrs. Rollings was a retired employee of Caro-Knit with 32 years of service. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling together. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, listening to gospel music, and watching Bonanza.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, John Raymond Rollings; 1 son, Wesley Rollings; brothers, Walter, Aaron, Marvin, and infant brother Ray Plyler; 3 sisters, Josephine Parsons, Mattie Duke, and Pauline Oliveria.

Survivors include her children, Joann Hunter and husband Floyd of Pageland, SC, Linda Catoe of Jefferson, SC, Homer Rollings and wife Vickie, and Virginia Knight and husband Dale both of Pageland, SC, Shirley Bess and husband Darrell of Chesterfield, SC, Rachel Watford and husband Harold of Hartsville, SC and Jimmy Rollings of Jefferson, SC; 27 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren; sister, Patsy Underwood of Las Vegas, NV; and sister-in-law, Mary Rollings of Lancaster, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County for the love and care shown to Mrs. Rollings and her family, and a very special thank you to long-time caretaker and family friend, Mattie Blakeney.
