DETROIT, Mich. - Lee Morris Stewart, 85, of 18953 San Juan Drive, Detroit, Mich., husband of Minnie Robinson Stewart, died Dec. 15, 2002, at his residence after a long illness. He was born in Union County on Nov. 9, 1917, a son of the late Herbert and Alberta Rodgers Stewart. He was a retired factory worker of General Motors Company, a member of Woodson Chapel Baptist Church and a former deacon of the church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Thelma (Pat) Jones and Brenda Beaver both of Southfield, Mich.; a sister, Alberta Stewart of Jonesville; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Woodson Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. M.C. Duncan.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The family is at the home of Betty Robinson, 1509 Meansville Road, Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Bessie C. Scott Head
Bessie Crawford Scott Head, 94, of Union died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at 7:25 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. As long as her health permitted, Mrs. Head lived with her son, Fred at 127 Tanglewood Drive, Union. She was born in Jonesville on May 9, 1909, a daughter of the late John Neil Crawford and Hannah Elizabeth Davis Crawford. She was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. She was first married to the late Willie J. Scott. She was later married to the late Perno Head.
Mrs. Scott was predeceased by a daughter and a son, Janie Scott and Clyde Scott. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Lillian Bernard and Carol S. and Jim Henderson, all of Richmond, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Barbara Scott, Fred and Carolyn Scott, all of Union and Kay Scott of Buffalo; a step-daughter, Nancy Roy of Augusta, Ga., 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Phillip Chandler, the Rev. Scott Cobb and the Rev. Carla Dillard. Burial will be in the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Doug Leonhardt, Mike Scott, Billy Wayne Scott, Clyde Scott Jr., Ken Headley and Ray DeBruhl. The family is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Carolyn Scott, 127 Tanglewood Drive, Union and will receive friends at Buffalo United Methodist Church from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Buffalo United Methodist Church, 108 Hill St., Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Bobby B. Holt
Bobby Benny (Cow) Holt, 68, widower of Lois West Holt, of 134 Buffalo St., Buffalo, died Saturday, Dec. 20, after a sudden illness. Mr. Holt was born in Union County on March 21, 1935, the son of Lovonia Davis Holt and the late James Hiram Holt. He was retired from Buffalo Mill as a doffer, and was employed at Paragon Plastics for the past 10 years. Known as the (Cow) he was a champion Golden Gloves boxer while serving in the United States Army.
Surviving in addition to his mother, Lovonia Holt of the home are a daughter, Freida Moss of Union; three sisters, Laverne Holt of the home, Yvonne Gregory of Union and Paunese Mitchell of Buffalo; a brother, Billy Ray Holt of Buffalo; five grandchldren, Rhonda Cobb, Lawana Moss, both of Union, Dale West of Nebraska, Lori Epperson and Lynn Zyika, both of Florida; three great-grandchldren, Will Cobb of Union, Brittney Dunagin of Spartanburg and Ansligh Moss of Union and a very special friend and companion, Sonja Hicks of Union; and very special family members, Rita Fuggle of Buffalo, and her daughter, Melissa Fuggle of Union, Shanon Barnes of Union and her children Anna Barnes and Nathan Barnes, both of Union; Joe Hicks, Joey Hicks, Chris Hicks, Jackson Hicks, Roy Hicks, Kayce Hicks and Amy Hicks, all of Union.
Mr. Holt was predeceased by a brother, Joe W. Holt. and a granddaughter, Carol Ann Dunagin. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb, the Rev. Johnny Burgess and Dr. Tim Driggers. Interment will be at Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will remain at Lewis Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight.
Active pallbearers will be Dale Gregory, Mike Gregory, Will Cobb, Roy Hicks, Joe Hicks, Jamie Mitchell, Richie Barnes and Chris Hicks. Honorary pallbearers will be: employees of Paragon Plastics, Kathy Parks, Jonas Hayes, William Moss, Joey Hicks and Robert Prince. Active and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 308 Linersville Road, P.O. Box 728, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The family is at the home, 134 Buffalo St., Buffalo. The Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Jack Knox
Jack Knox, 79, husband of Gertrude Haney Knox of 968 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Knox was born in Union, Aug. 11, 1924, a son of the late Smiley and Sibbie Eaves Knox. He was a retired self-employed paint contractor and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Knox was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees, the building committee and was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and the Men's Club.
Mr. Knox was also a member of the Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Frances Burton of Anderson; three sons, David Knox and his wife Mary, Kenneth (Cooter) Knox and his wife Marie and Dennis (Sput) Knox, all of Union; five sisters, Patricia Kerr of Spartanburg, Thelma Camby of Pacolet, Mary Jo Baldwin of Columbia, Rachel Lawson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Linda Holland of Union; a brother, Ronnie Knox of Union; eight grandchildren, Teresa Knox, Rhonda Johnson, Tim Knox, Justin Knox, Chris Knox, Ashley Knox, Brittany Knox and Daniel Knox; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Knox and Hagan Knox.
Mr. Knox was predeceased by a sister, Lona K. Davis and two brothers, Weldon Knox and William (Bill) Knox. Funeral services were held at 3:30 this afternoon at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Keith Sweatt and the Rev. Larry Hyder. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Justin Knox, Warren Johnson, Tim Knox, David Becknell, William Scales and Don Hogsed. Members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class sat in a group. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1622 Kelly Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Cynthia B. Lee
Cynthia Maxine Bolin Lee, 47, wife of Harley A. Lee Sr. of 211 Tempy Hill Road, Buffalo, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 at 1:56 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Lee was born in Union on Aug. 5, 1956, a daughter of Stella McAbee Bolin Williams of Whitmire and the late Ralph Bolin. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Lee was a retired custodian at Monarch Elementary School. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a daughter, Holly Lee of the home; a son, Harley Andrew Lee Jr. of the home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Minor Garner of Gainesville, Ga., and Doretha and Tim Brown of Asheville, N.C.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth Wayne and Ruby Bolin of Columbia, Bobby Gene and Jean Bolin of Buffalo and Robert Lloyd Carlisle of Atlanta, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Employees and staff of Monarch Elementary School are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.
The family is at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Gene and Jean Bolin, 103 Mill St., Buffalo. Memorials may be made to the Union County Cancer Service c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Thelma T. Manly
CROSS ANCHOR - Thelma Thompson Linder Manly, 72, of 215 Browning Road, Cross Anchor, formerly of Enoree and a former resident of Union, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003. at 12:15 a.m. in B.J. Workman Hospital in Woodruff after a sudden illness. Mrs. Manly was born in Union on Nov. 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Charles S. and Lillie Nelson Thompson. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a member of the Westside Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Deborah L. Gorrell of Cross Anchor and Charlotte L. White of Union; four grandchildren, Heather L. Handley of Cross Anchor, Samantha Lawter and Tonya Lawter, both of Union and David A. Gorrell of Spartanburg; step-grandchildren, Lillie Handley, Meghan Alman, Lexi Davis, Trey Hollowinski, Nishia Moore and Blake Wofford-Young; her step-mother, Floree Thompson of Union and two sisters, Reba Sumner of Jonesville and Mildred Godfrey of Enoree.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Robby Capp, Sergio Gamma, Terry W. Wright, Phillip Wright, Tim Alexander and Randy Alexander. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. Elinor C. Paysour
GREER - Elinor Clara Copeland Paysour, 62, formerly of 704 N. Dobson Road, widow of Martin Everette Paysour, died Sunday, Dec., 21, 2003 at Valley Falls Terrace. Mrs. Paysour was a native of Charlotte, N.C., a daughter of the late Elmer Curtis and Clara Mae Dempsey Copeland. She was a 1962 graduate of Greenville Hospital School of Nursing, a former registered nurse at Allen Bennett Hospital and a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret C. Moore of Moore; a brother, Curt Copeland of Beaufort; a sister, Mary Jane Copeland Cunningham of Union; and two grandsons, Christopher and T.J. Moore, both of Moore. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Wood Mortuary conducted by the Rev. Jeffrey Lageman.
Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Wood Mortuary. The family is at the home of her daughter, 2615 Duncan Moore Highway, Moore. Memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 300 O'neal Road, Greer, S.C. 29651 or Valley Falls Terrace, 400 Locust Grove Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303. Kathleen T. Quinn
Kathleen Trammell Quinn, 82, of 3580 E. Kesler Lane, Gilbert, Ariz., formerly of Union, died Saturday in Arizona. She was the widow of Lee Quinn and was first married to the late Lawrence Y. King. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Henry E. Sprouse
Henry E. Sprouse, 76, husband of Sara G. Sprouse, of 135 Eubanks St., Union, died Sunday Dec. 21, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Sprouse was born in Union, Jan. 16, 1927, a son of the late Henry T. and Irene Nance Sprouse. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant and a charter member of Covenant Baptist Church where he served the church as custodian. Mr. Sprouse was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in France and Germany shortly after World War II.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Will Sprouse of Union; two step-sons, Bobby Garner of Union and Lee Bogan of Portland, Tenn.; a step-daughter, Diane Burgess of Union; four sisters, Frances Tucker of Columbia, Mable Tucker, Lena Sprouse and Jo Ann Lawson, all of Union; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Sprouse was predeceased by a brother, Harold Dean Sprouse and two step-sons, Big Bill Garner and Chunky Garner. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Covenant Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Michael Pettit, David (Tubo) Owens, Ken Jones, Freddie Crawford, Jerry Tatum, Buddy Smith, Todd Weltman and Stanley Russell.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. Pinckney S. Webber Jr.
Pinckney S. Webber Jr., 78, husband of Betty Bentley Webber of 265 Bailey Town Road, Union, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003 at his home after a long illness. Mr. Webber was born in York, Oct. 21, 1925, a son of the late Pinckney Samuel Webber Sr. and Nancy Elizabeth Mitchell Webber. He was retired from Springs Industries in Chester and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II.
Mr. Webber was a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge #244 and a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia W. and Willie R. Harris of Buffalo, Ava and Dell Pridemore of Duncan; three sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Sara Webber of Boiling Springs, Michael and Donna R. Webber of Duncan, Pinckney S. (Sammy) Webber III and Lynn of Lockhart; two sisters, Margaret Montgomery of Adamsburg and Elizabeth and her husband Maxie Crick of Kingstree; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lockhart United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alan Quarles and Chaplin Skip Snyder. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bill McSwain, Jay Reardon, Marvin Montgomery, Chuck Montgomery, Lewis Clark, Terry Bentley, Earl Crick and Wayne Crick.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.
