CHERAW - Joseph L. Baumgardner, 70, died Friday, May 12, 2017. Born in Gastonia, NC, he was a son of the late Benjamin Thomas and Gertie Elmina Hamm Huffstatler Baumgardner. He was retired from INA Bearing.
Surviving is his wife, Judy Payne Baumgardner of Cheraw, SC, a son, Joey (Augusta) Baumgardner of Bennettsville, SC, daughters, Doris (Mark) Morton of Cheraw, SC, Jeana (Bobby) Gann of Grover, NC, Tammy (John) Hutchins of Wilkesboro, NC, Elaine Baumgardner of Wilkesboro, NC, a brother, Gene (Becky) Baumgardner of Gastonia, NC, sisters, Bentha (David) Crooke of Winston-Salem, NC, Susan Huntsinger of Mooresville, NC, 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and several brothers and sisters.
The family received friends 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday, May 15, 2017 at Cheraw Church of God.
A funeral service was held 4:00 PM, Monday, May 15, 2017 at Cheraw Church of God. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Barbara Rayfield Crawley
HARTSVILLE - Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Rayfield Crawley, 82, were held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Greg Boyd officiated with burial in Ruby Cemetery. The family received friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the church parlor. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mrs. Crawley, widow of Gerald Gilliam Crawley, Sr., died peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Blease and Essie Lee Cason Rayfield. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She retired from Sonoco Products Company after 31 years of service and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club.
Surviving are her son, John Douglas (April) Crawley of Hartsville, SC; grandsons, Patrick Cole Crawley, Duncan Woodham Crawley, Cameron Douglas Crawley, Braden Gilliam Crawley.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Gerald Gilliam "Jerry" Crawley, II and David Cole Crawley; brother, David Cason Rayfield.
Bobby Ray Miller
JEFFERSON - Rev. Bobby Ray Miller, 61, died on Monday, May 8, 2017. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 11, 2017at 2PM from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. He was born on May 18, 1955 in Chesterfield County, SC to late Clayton and Allean Rodgers Miller. Survivors: his wife, Rev. Betty A. Miller, Jefferson, SC; a son, Bobby Miller, Jr., Florence, SC; two daughters, Shaknika Miller-Edwards (Donta), Charlotte, NC, Min. Tomika L. Miller, Charlotte NC; and a brother, Clayton Miller (Annie Grace), McBee, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland. .
Richard Samuel ‘Dick’ Moody
CHERAW - Richard Samuel “Dick” Moody, 83, died Friday, March 31, 2017. Born in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Opal Moody. Mr. Moody was a member of the Church of God of Minerva, OH. He was a member of Teamsters-Trucker Division. Mr. Moody was an easy going and laid back, but hardworking man and entrepreneur. He was the owner of both Major Appliance Transport (MAT) and Moody Enterprises. He loved drag racing and was a Ford enthusiast, especially Ford Mustangs. He could often be found out riding his motorcycle. A favorite pastime he enjoyed was to go riding and visiting restaurants, although his favorite was El-Sherif’s of Cheraw.
Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Ronda Hamby Moody of Cheraw, SC, sons, Richard “Rick” Moody (Marybelle) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Gregory Cantler (Kathy) of Bennettsville, SC, Chris Cantler of Lakeland, FL, Timothy Cantler of Lakeland, FL, and Daryl Cantler (Lisa) of Lakeland, FL, daughters, Beth Ann Moody Bush (Brad) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Susan Heist (Richard) of Cookeville, TN, 18 grandchildren and 16 great-children.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, a son, Mark Moody, a daughter, Kimberly Smith, and sisters, Barbara Church and Jane Witherspoon.
Rudy Frank Quick
WALLACE - Rudy Frank Quick, 61, died Thursday, May 11, 2017. Born in Marlboro County, SC, he was a son of the late Harrison Matthew and Gladys Mae Mannis Quick. He was a carpenter.
Surviving is his brother, John W. “Doug” Quick, sisters, Kaye Quick Stubbs and Faye Quick all of Wallace, SC, three children and one great grandchild.
The family received friends 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday, May 15, 2017 at Lighthouse Ministries.

Bonnie J. Rose
WALLACE - Bonnie J. Rose, 76, died Sunday, May 07, 2017. Born in Toms River, NJ she was a daughter of the late John and Josphine Grant Hudler. She was a retired medical clerk.
Surviving is her husband, Marvin A. Rose of Wallace, SC, a son, Scott A. Tarte of Fayetteville, NC, daughters, Debbie Brower of Toms River, NJ, Christine Wilson, of, AZ, a brother, John Hudler of Toms River, NJ, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
William P. ‘Bill’ Sherman
PAGELAND - William P. “Bill” Sherman, 89, memorial service was held on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 1PM from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. He was born on April 7, 1928 in Bennington, VT to the late Margaret Grout Sherman and William Terry Herrick. Survivors: three children, Ferdinand Wise, III, Sicklerville, NJ, Norma Weaver, Crossville, TN and Beatrice Nitolo, Shenandoah, PA; five grandchildren, Domenick Rago, Randal Galan, Michael Wise, Matthew Wise, Alexandria Miller-Galan; four great grandchildren, Demitrius Rago, Anabelle Galan, Nicholas Dial, and Brooklyn Galan; and a brother, Roger Sherman, Apopka, FL. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland. .
John Chappell Beard
BISHOPVILLE - Graveside services for John Chappell Beard, 91, who died peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2017, were held at 11 o'clock on Monday, May 8, 2017, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Watson officiated, and the family received friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad, c/o Lee County EMS, P.O. Box 927, Bishopville, SC 2901. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home is serving the family.
Randy Wilson English
GRIFFIN, Ga. - Randy Wilson English, 58, died Monday, May 1, 2017. Born in Cheraw, SC, he was a son of Betty English and the late Zeb W. English. He was a graduate of Wallace High School and an All-American high school football player. Mr. English was an avid college football fan. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his wife, Doris English of Griffin, GA, sons, Brittany (Mandy) English of Bennettsville, SC, and Terry (Heather) Duffee of Tyrone, GA, his mother, Betty English of Wallace, SC, brothers, Andy (Hope) English of Cheraw, SC, Frankie English of Wallace, SC, a sister, Elaine (Tony) Creech of Wallace, SC, grandchildren, Chloe English, Canon English, Rusty (Noel) Duffee, and a great-grandchild, James Duffee.
He was preceded in death by his father listed above, also, a sister, Gaynell Coates and a nephew, Jeffrey Polson.
A graveside service was held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Wallace, SC.
Bertha Lee Henderson
CHESTERFIELD - Bertha Lee Henderson, 82, died on Sunday, April 30, 2017. Funeral services were held on Friday, May 5, 2017 at 12:30 PM from the Davidson Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC. She was born to the late Lloyd and Sue Ratliff Timmons on December 6, 1934 in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: two daughters, Showna Sutton (Earl Sutton), Alexandria, VA and Ollie Edwards (Charles), Springfield, VA; a son, Maxion “Sonny” Henderson (Shelia Drummond), Alexandria, VA; two brothers, Lloyd “Bodie” Timmons and Frank Timmons, Alexandria, VA; three sisters, Alvenia Timmons, Ollie “Vee” Dunston and Mae Timmons, Alexandria, VA; two granddaughters she raised, Shawnae Hickman, and Chalor London, Chesterfield, SC; two granddaughters, Demi Green and Shawnickle Timmons, Alexandria, VA; three great grandchildren. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

PAGELAND - Queen Ingram, 86, died on Thursday, April 27, 2017. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 2PM from the Flint Ridge Baptist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born to the late Henry Norman and Mary Butler Threatt on February 3, 1931 at Fort Motte, South Carolina. John Ellison Moore III
CHERAW - John Ellison Moore, III of Cheraw, SC, died while on an extended trip to Thailand on Wednesday, March 22, 2017. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 4:00 PM in Morven Cemetery, Morven, NC, with the Reverend Alan Arnold officiating.
Mr. Moore was born in Charlotte, NC, on May 9, 1939, to the late John Ellison Moore of Morven, NC and Jean Hardin Marion Moore of Chester, SC. His maternal grandfather was Judge John Hardin Marion of the South Carolina Supreme Court who lived in Chester, SC, where he raised his six children.
A young Johnny Moore moved with his family to Rock Hill, SC in 1948, where he attended Winthrop Training School and graduated in 1957. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, cum laude, in 1961. Immediately following graduation from UNC, he served in the US Army for two years directing training films at the Army Pictorial Center in New York City. Later, Mr. Moore served in the Navy and worked his way up to the rank of Commander. He also obtained an MBA at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Mr. Moore was a well-distinguished advertising businessman. He enjoyed a long career as a communications and marketing specialist, working for large agencies in Philadelphia, Chicago, Knoxville, and Atlanta. While working in Philadelphia he was honored as the 1965 Jaycees “Man of the Year.” He was most proud of the campaigns he created or supervised for Zenith TV (“The quality goes in before the name goes on.”), Magnavox, Chrysler, Scott Paper, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Mello-Yello. His most famous campaign was realized through AT&T with the slogan, (“Reach out and touch someone.”). He retired in 1994 after a successful 30-year career.
After retirement, Mr. Moore continued to serve others through his volunteerism with the Peace Corps. His assignment was Katowice, Poland, where he taught Business English at the University of Silesia. After the obligatory two-year commitment, he was hired as a civilian faculty professor at the same university and remained there until 2008.
Through the World Teach Organization, Mr. Moore worked to educate people in countries around the world including China, Spain, and Colombia, South America. He most enjoyed teaching college students how to become successful businessmen and businesswomen. He traveled extensively and enjoyed the friends he made along the way, especially in the countries of Poland, Tunisia, Colombia and Thailand.
Mr. Moore is survived by his beloved sister, Marion Moore Anderson of Cheraw, SC, his nephews Glenn Anderson, III (wife, Anna), Conner and Peyton, Douglas Anderson (wife, Mary), John and Harvey, Liston Anderson and many first cousins. He was predeceased by his younger brother, William Lee Davidson (Billy) Moore, a brother-in-law William Glenn Anderson, Jr., and his parents listed above. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Kiser Funeral Home Cheraw, SC.
Oscar O’Neal
SOCIETY HILL - Oscar O’Neal, 68, memorial service was held on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at 3PM from the Flemming Funeral Chapel, Cheraw, SC. He was born to the late Clarence and Alma McKay O’Neal on August 28, 1948 in Darlington County, SC. Survivors: a son, James Oscar O’Neal (Cassandra), Seattle, WA; a brother, Julius O’Neal (Joyce), Society Hill, SC; two sisters, Shirley Kelly, Society Hill, SC and Juanita Madison, Cheraw, SC; two grandchildren, Jordan O’Neal and Madison O’Neal, both of Seattle, WA. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Cheraw. .
Ginger Rogers Powe
CHERAW - Heaven gained an angel on Monday, April 17, 2017 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina by the name of Ginger Rogers Powe, known to many as “Nat” or “Big Mama.”
Ginger was born on June 29, 1934 to Lila and Frank Rogers in Cheraw, SC. She attended school at Coulter Academy.
Ginger was a loving and kind person who never met a stranger. She was known for her great Sunday dinners, and anyone who came by was welcomed to dine at her table. Ginger was a hat lover who was always seen wearing her stylish hats on Sunday mornings.
Ginger accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Hebron A.M.E. Zion Church for many years. She later joined Charity Community Church where she was President of the Deaconess Board until her health failed and President Emeritus until her death. She was the Mother of the church at Charity Community Church of Christ.
On September 9, 1951, she married the love of her life, James Arthur Powe. To this union seven children were born.
Ginger began her working career at Thomas Antiques when her twins started kindergarten. She remained there until her retirement and beyond. This job developed her love of antiques and beautiful things.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Lila Williams and Alice Flowers; and four brothers: Frank, Ellis, Julius and Thomas Rogers.
Left to cherish precious memories: husband of 65 years: James Arthur; seven children: V. Ann Powe, L. Jeanette Powe, James “Bro” Powe (Mary K.), Calvin Powe (Mary A.), Walter “Terry” Powe (Susan), Stephanie Lock (James), and Stephen Powe (LaGena), Boiling Springs, SC; a special granddaughter she raised as her own: Camillia Powe, Cheraw, SC; two sisters: Mrs. Frances Johnson, Norfolk, VA and Mrs. Geneva Wingfield (Eddie), Washington, DC; four sisters-in-law: Mrs. Arziner Hillian (Parnell), Bowie, MD, Mrs. Ruby Cash, Baltimore, MD, Ms. Annie R. Powe and Mrs. Mary P. Jackson, Cheraw, SC; one brother-in-law: Mr. Deford Powe, Cheraw, SC; eight grandchildren: Adrian Huntley, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Latoya McQueen, Cheraw, SC, Jamie Brown, Goose Creek, SC, Keisha Cole, Cheraw, SC, Franklin Powe, Columbia, SC, Trae Lock, Cheraw, SC, and Stephen and Denton Powe, Boiling Springs, SC; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one adopted son: Orrin Thomas (Sharon), Cheraw, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Sarah Kent Hartzell
CHESTERFIELD - Sarah Kent Hartzell, 47, died June 18, 2017, at her home. Sarah was born May 3, 1970, to the late Alice Gamble Kilgo and George Waddell Hartzell. She attended Cheraw High School, but graduated from The Grier School. She attended the University of South Carolina and Northeastern Technical College. Sarah worked many jobs starting in her teens, mostly in the hospitality industry, which suited her personality. Sarah’s favorite times were when she was outside enjoying nature, either in the mountains or at the beach, especially when she was surrounded by friends and music. Sarah was a true free spirit who loved her son and her pets with passion. She was known to greet everyone she knew with a big smile and her favorite greeting, “Be Easy”.
Sarah is survived by her son, Kavik Hartzell Carter of Florence, her father and stepmother, George and Emily Hartzell of Cheraw, her sister, brother in law, and nephew, Gamble, Gus, and George Anderson of Cheraw, her special friend, Crawford Hainey of Chesterfield, and several furry friends. She was predeceased by her mother listed above, and her brother, George Waddell Hartzell, III.
In memory of Sarah, the family desires memorials be made to: Paws and Claws, P.O. Box 386, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

MT. CROGHAN - Mrs. Doris Smith Hendrick, age 86, entered into rest on Monday, June 19, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church by Brent Taylor with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
