BETHUNE - Mamie Patterson Newman, 90, died on Sunday, June 18, 2017. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 23, 017 at 12PM from the Sandy Grove United Methodist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born on June 24, 1926 in Sumter, SC to the late John and Emma Moses Patterson. Survivors: a son, Robert Newman, Long Island, NY; a daughter, Nellie Sinclair (Randall), Jacksonville, FL; a brother, George Patterson (Mildred), Bethune, SC; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland.

Ernestine Murray Rorie

CHERAW - Ernestine Murray Rorie, 57, died on Thursday, June 15, 2017. Funeral service was held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 2PM from the Charity Community Church of Christ, Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Cheraw, SC. She was born on September 7, 1959 in Chesterfield, SC to Gladys McQueen Murray and the late Ernest Murray. Survivors: her husband, Levander Rorie; a daughter, Ashley R. Mosley (Jovon), Winston Salem, NC; two sons, Nicholas L. Rorie (Emily), Yokota Air Base, Japan and Carolos D. Rorie, Cheraw, SC; her mother, Gladys Murray, Cheraw, SC; five grandchildren; two brothers, Cyrus Murray and Vernon Murray, both of Cheraw, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Cheraw. .

Linda Dolores Johnson Wallace Touchberry

HARTSVILLE - Linda Dolores Johnson Wallace Touchberry, 69, died Friday, June 23, 2017. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Mary Sue Davidson Johnson. She was a member of Lake Robinson Independent Baptist Church, Hartsville, SC. She was on the Dean’s List of C-M Tec (1993-1995). She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and caring for her girls. She loved family gatherings and fellowship with her church family. Most of all she enjoyed conversations with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Funeral services are to be announced.

Surviving is her husband, John Edward Touchberry of the home, daughters, Audrey Lynn Hewitt of Cheraw, SC, Stacy Diane Wallace of Cheraw, SC, Karyn Delores Wallace Conklin (Norman) of Cheraw, SC, brothers, Michael Wayne (Nancy) Johnson of Hartsville, SC, John Robert Johnson of Hartsville, SC, Sisters, Patricia Maxine (Ricky) Johnson Winburn of Hartsville, SC, Judith Gale (Jackie) Johnson Smith of Hartsville, SC, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, and a son Stephen Matthew Wallace.

A graveside funeral service was held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 24, 2017 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Anne Whitehead Bassford Townsend

CHERAW - Anne Whitehead Bassford Townsend, 79, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017, in the MICU of McLeods in Florence with her family by her side.

Anne was born January 21, 1938 to Charles Russell Bassford, Sr. and Annie Glenn Whitehead of Dunn, NC. She graduated as an RN from the Duke School of Nursing. While at university she met David Townsend. David and Anne celebrated 55 years of marriage on June 10, 2017. Together they traveled the world and had three sons together.

Anne was a loving wife, caring mother, talented artist, and award-winning photographer. Her quick wit and spunky personality will be sorely missed.

Anne is survived by her husband, David, her three sons, Kenneth, Steven, and Michael, as well as her eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents & and her brother, Charles Bassford, Jr.

A reception was held at 1:00pm- 2:00pm Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. The funeral was held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. The burial followed the funeral service in the McCall cemetery, Bennettsville, SC.

Susan Lee Hastings Widener

October 7, 1945 – June 9, 2017

WILSON, N.C. - Susan Lee Hastings Widener, 71, of Wilson passed away Friday at home with her loving family by her side. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 414 Sunset Road, Wilson. The Rev. Tom Watkins officiated.

Susan is survived by her loving husband of fifty-two years, Lynn D. Widener of the home; their daughter, Kimberly S.W. Shaw of Wilson; their son, Todd P. Widener of Connecticut; their grandsons, Michael Shaw and Logan Shaw, and her sisters, Sherry L. Hunter of Houston, Texas, and Deanne Ausbrooks of Marion, Illinois.

Flowers are welcome or memorials in Susan’s honor can be directed to the Veteran Residential Services, 2500 Nash Street, Suite E, Wilson, North Carolina 27896.

CHERAW - Connie Diane Boatwright, 61, died Sunday, June 11, 2017. Born in Marion, SC she was a daughter of the late Gary Lee and Ernestine Rebecca Todd McElveen. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

Boatwright, Sr. of Cheraw, SC, sons, Tony (Hannah) Boatwright, Jr. of Chesterfield, SC, Noah Cooper of Cheraw, SC, a daughter, Cassie Dianne Boatwright of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Jessie Diane Boatwright, Tony Douglas Boatwright, III, Savannah Blake Boatwright, Graceson William Boatwright, brothers Gary (Shirley) McElveen of Wallace, SC, Phillip (Bobbie) McElveen of Cheraw, SC, Johnny (Mary) Johnson of Cheraw, SC, Boyd (Peggy) Johnson of Greenwood, SC, sisters, Betty Hatcher of Wallace, SC, Mary (Roger) Mabe of Jackson Springs, NC and Brenda Mesiemore of Zephyrhills, FL.

Jimmy’ Brigman

HAMLET, N.C. – M/SGT R.T. “Jimmy” Brigman, 88, of Woodlawn Avenue, Hamlet, went to be with his Lord, Monday, June 12, 2017 at Hospice Haven. A True example of a dedicated and devoted American; as well as a Soldier for Christ.

He was born October 4, 1928, in Marlboro County, SC, son of Rochlee and Emma Dunn Brigman.

A Veteran of US Army and a member of Calvary Baptist Church; he accomplished much in both areas of his life. He was Deacon, Head usher, Brotherhood Director, Sunday School Teacher & Bible School Teacher & Cook, just to name a few. He was Commander eight times for DAV, Chapter 59 and Buildings and Grounds Commander. For almost 30 years, he placed American flags at several local cemeteries on graves of Veterans. He became known as “Flag Man”. He earned Korea Service medal, Two Bronze Stars, Silver Star, two purple hearts and a Master Parachutist Badge. Brigman served in both WWII and the Korean War.

All who knew “Jimmy” agreed he had a big heart, helping in any way he knew how; from doing errands, to cooking, to making you smile; he was loved by all who knew him. He will be missed!

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Virginia Brigman; siblings, Ebbie Brigman, Alex Brigman, John Thomas Brigman, Lena Mae Bedford, Jasper Brigman, Joyce Brigman, Boyd William Brigman, Mary Louise Brigman and Anna B. Grant; and grandson, CPL. Kelly S. Keith.

Visitation was Thursday, June 15, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Harrington Funeral Home, Hamlet.

At other times the family will receive friends at home of his sister, Hazel, 103 Hamilton Ave., Hamlet.

The Funeral was Friday, June 16, at 2:00 PM, at Calvary Baptist Church, with Rev. Scott Conner and Mr. David Williams officiating.

Burial will follow at Richmond Memorial Park, Rockingham.

Survivors include his daughters, Gloria (Sammy) Leviner of Cheraw, SC, Kathie (Steve) Cook of Cheraw, SC and Donna (Ron) Harter of Florence, SC; sisters, Hazel Britt-Hennecy of Myrtle Beach, SC and Rosa Lee Laug of NY; grandchildren, Craig (Paula) Leviner, Phillip (Candace) Leviner, Rebecca (Chase) Cook, Dustin (Lauryn) Brasington and Jude (Ashley Grace) Harter; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Calvary Baptist Church, McDonald Ave., Hamlet, N.C. 28345. or to: AMVETS, Post 316 (Flag Project), PO Box 774, Rockingham, N.C. 28380.

KATHRYN GAYLE SMITH CHAVIS

WALLACE - Mrs. Kathryn Gayle Smith Chavis, age 69, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Friday, June 16, 2017 at True Gospel Emmanuel Holiness Church by Rev. James Croke and Rev. Chad Watson with burial following in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, 318 E. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC.

Mrs. Chavis was born August 14, 1947 in Marlboro County, SC a daughter of the late Ernest Smith, Sr. and Blanche Grant Smith. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Kathryn was a devoted homemaker and enjoyed reading and playing computer games.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chavis was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Ernest “Uncle Jr.” Smith, Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Frank Chavis of the home; 2 children, Jackie Chavis of Mooresville, NC, and Chris (Sarah) Chavis of Chesterfield, SC; 6 grandchildren, Karen Chavis, Alan Chavis, Kristen Chavis, Clinton Chavis, Jacob Chavis, and Liberty Chavis; brother, Charles Smith of Wallace, SC.

Helen ‘Ms. Skip’ Waddill Comer

WEST COLUMBIA - Helen Waddill Comer wasn’t like everybody else. She was our Momma, our best friend, our brightest and most beautiful. She went Home on June 11 at the age of 91. When she left, she was in bed in the sunshine, with all of the birds singing around her.

Born on May 9, 1926 in Cheraw, S.C., she was a miracle to her parents and went on to be one for every person whose life she touched.

In November 1944 at a USO dance, Helen looked up and “a spotlight was shining” on the finest young man she’d ever seen — “Skip was all I could see.” In January, they were married. Together, they raised seven children and 13 grandchildren. Neither would claim to have gotten it all right, but if you asked Helen, she’d tell you about her “long and happy life” and her “beautiful” family. Skip and Helen also helped raise a church, a neighborhood, and the strongest of friendships — all defined by patience and love.

Services for Helen were held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Cayce, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 16, led by her one of her best friends, Reverend Patricia Sexton. Entombment followed in Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, Helen requested that donations be made to All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

Ralph E. Johns Sr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Ralph E. Johns, Sr., age 90, entered into rest on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church, 364 Calvary Road, Cheraw, SC by Pastor Dave Bradshaw with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Johns was born August 26, 1926 in Blacksburg, VA a son of the late Benjamin and Marie Johns. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. Mr. Johns was a pilot and enjoyed flying. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church of Cheraw. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed following the sport with his friend, Junie Donleavy.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Virginia K. Johns; sister, Charlene Sheppe; brothers, Benjamin Johns, Jr. and Skipper Johns.
Survivors include his children, Dinah (Charles) Funderburk of Cheraw, SC, Jennifer (Trent) Lindsey of St. Paul, AK, Ralph Eugene “Rocky” Johns, Jr., and John David Johns both of Chesterfield, SC; 7 grandchildren, Marlena Slager, Leslie Wallace, Richard Myers, Julie Myers Odom, Shannon Coxe, Courtney Johns, and Casey Johns; great grandchildren, Tyler Wallace, Charlie Jackson, Adalyn Odom, Charley Slager, Lara Slager, Sophie Slager, and Trey Coxe; 2 great-great grandchildren, Scarlett Jackson and Jayda Rivers.

Christopher Owen Pierce

MYRTLE BEACH - Mr. Christopher Owen Pierce, 54, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 11, 2017.

Born September 16, 1962 in Hagerstown, MD he was the son of Margaret C. Pierce and the late Marion Eugene Pierce. Mr. Pierce was a graduate of Cheraw High School, Class of 1983, and worked in management at WalMart and PetSmart for many years. He was a jokester who constantly kidded around. His joy in life was spending time with his grandson Carson. Mr. Pierce was predeceased by his father and three brothers, Larry Charles Pierce, Michael Otis Pierce, and Kenneth Wayne Pierce.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Pierce; his children, Christian Marion Pierce and Marissa Pierce; his grandson, Carson Owen Pierce; his mother, Margaret Pierce; his sisters, Brenda J. Lampley and Pamela Ann (Ron) Byrd; his brothers, Donald Eugene (Beverly) Pierce and Randall Oliver (Ann) Pierce; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held from 4:00pm-6:00pm Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.

Joyce Jordan Simpson

CHERAW - Mrs. Joyce Jordan Simpson, age 82, entered into rest on Friday, June 16, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 18, 2017, at North Cheraw Baptist Church by Pastor Richie Yow and Rev. Mike Williams with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mrs. Simpson was born September 18, 1934, in Chesterfield County, SC, a daughter of the late James Archie and Phoebe Allen Grant Jordan. She was a devoted homemaker and faithful member of North Cheraw Baptist Church. Mrs. Simpson enjoyed reading and studying God’s word and faithfully served him throughout the years. She was active for many years serving on the church social committee as well as singing in the choir. Joyce had a special place in heart for children and would always make a point to make them feel loved and welcome. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was also preceded in death by her son, James “Jimmy” Lynwood Simpson; sister, Lew Ellen Jordan; and 2 brothers, James Allen Jordan and Homer Lee Jordan.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years and 11 months, Bernie G. Simpson, Sr. of the home; son, Bernie G. (Sylvia) Simpson, Jr. of Cheraw, SC; daughter, Arrita “Rita” Simpson (Carl) Forman of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Dr. Gabe (Lisa) Simpson, Dameon Simpson, Liza (Jody) Streater all of Cheraw, SC, Matthew (Ashley) Simpson of Charlotte, NC, Morgan (Adam) Humphries and Jessica (Chris) Sellers both of Columbia, SC, and Garret (Jordan) Forman of Lydia, SC; 12 great grandchildren, Ashley (Spencer) Heringa of Pendleton, SC, Kaine Simpson of Chesterfield, SC, Justin Horne and Nathan Simpson both of N.
