Barbara Gainey Woodward Gaskins

CHESTERFIELD - Barbara Gainey Woodward Gaskins, 58, of Chesterfield, SC, died Sunday, June 4, 2017, at Magnolia Place-Greenville. Born September 1, 1958, in Cheraw, SC, she was the daughter of the late Edward E. Gainey and Letitia Ann Johnson Steen. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC.

Surviving are her sons, Bradley R. Woodward (Kelly) of Spartanburg, SC and Christopher L. Woodward of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Dylan, Taylor, Noah, Kristina, Hadley, and Hudson Woodward; brothers, Eric Gainey of Chesterfield, SC and Brian Gainey of Currituck, NC; sister, Sandra Gainey Jones of Hartsville, SC; and her canine companion, Zoey.

A service honoring her memory will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Darrell Hatchell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church, 293 Zoar Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

James Leaird

PAGELAND - Mr. James Leaird, 83, of Pageland, South Carolina went to be with his Lord on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at his home.

James was born in Chesterfield County, SC on March 31, 1934 to the late Jessie Leaird and Bertha Jordan Leaird. He later met and united in marriage to Donna Edwards Leaird who precedes him in death. In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by, his brothers, Thomas Leaird and Alvin Leaird, half-brothers, Cyrus and Myron Leaird, sisters, Eloise Jordan and Aileen Leaird and half-sister, Mozelle Tadlock. He was a photographer in the United States Army, Navy and Air Force. He was the owner of Jim Leaird and Associates. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pageland.

Those left to celebrate and remember his life include his loving sons, Tim Leaird (Rebecca) of Hamlet, NC and Steve Leaird (Gwynn) of Kershaw, SC, daughter, Annette Schlier (Woody) of Charlotte, NC and sister, Pete Brock of Pageland, SC, seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Pageland with Dr. Joel Dale officiating. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland.
The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Baumgartner Funeral Home.

Ruby Tyner Whitaker

PATRICK - Mrs. Ruby Tyner Whitaker, age 77, entered into rest on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at her home. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 11, 2017 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Rev. Ricky “Sweet” Jenkins and Rev. Clifton Baskins with burial following in the St. John Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 6:00 – 8:00 on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Whitaker was born July 18, 1939 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Lloyd Avander and Ellie Pressley Tyner. Ruby was a retired seamstress at Chesterfield Manufacturing. Mrs. Whitaker was a member of Cross Branch Baptist Church and attended Grace and Mercy Worship Center. Ruby enjoyed cooking, sewing, and spending time with her loving family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Edna Mae Short, a son-in law, Jimmy Short, and 3 brothers, Jimmy, Floyd, and Boyd Tyner.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, David Hayes Whitaker of the home; son, David (Betty) Whitaker, Patrick, SC; daughter, Terrie W. (Robert) Miller, Florence, SC; sister, Elaine T. Outlaw, Patrick, SC; 5 grandchildren; Vickie (Jody) Braswell, Jeffrey Short, Amanda (Justin) Head, Brandon Whitaker, and Monica Whitaker; 2 great grandchildren, Miracle Braswell and Braylee Head; special friends, Linda Griggs and Shirlene Dixon.

Jayvilliuan Louallen Covington

JEFFERSON - Jayvilliuan Louallen Covington, 76, died on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Funeral service was held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 2:30PM from the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery, Ruby, SC. She was born December 6, 1940 in Jefferson, SC to the late James Ellison and Virgie Hough Louallen. Survivors: three daughters, Vereta Covington, Felicia Sheppard (Donald) and Patricia Covington; a son, Jonathan Covington; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and a sister, Lavilla Evans (Paul). Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Pageland. .

Randolph Langley

WALLACE - Randolph Langley, 87, died Thursday, July 20, 2017. Born in Marlboro County, SC he was a son of the late Eddie and Bertha Quick Langley. He was the widower of Sue Johnson Langley. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed racing, arts and crafts.
Surviving is his stepdaughter, Tracy Manning of Aroura, IN, a sister, Emma L. Brown, of Burlington, NC, special friends, Rose D. Elliott and Connie Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, brothers, Carroll F. Langley, Archie Joe Langley, sisters, Cassie Lee Chapman and Shirley Polson.
The family received friends 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Odessa S. Griggs

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Odessa S. Griggs, age 97, passed away at her home in Chesterfield, surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Thompson Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Ronnie Grizzle and Brent Taylor with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Monday, July 24, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
The eldest of nine children, Odessa was born at home on April 28, 1920 in Chesterfield, SC to the late Luther M. and Clara Moore Sellers. She attended the Wexford School and graduated from Ruby High School in 1939. On September 14, 1940, she married the late Baxter Hart Griggs.
Odessa was a dedicated homemaker until 1959 when she joined the workforce with McLeod’s Tape Mill, later known as Chesterfield Webbing. Odessa retired at the age of 69. Upon her retirement, she became an in-home caregiver to several elderly ladies in the Chesterfield County area.
Odessa was a caring, loving, giving, hardworking mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great–great grandmother who enjoyed spending time with family, attending church and gardening. At the time of her death she was the oldest member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Odessa was also preceded in death by her sister, Dot S. Tarleton; brothers, Luther M. Sellers, Jr., Murray Sellers, William Sellers, and Bobby J. Sellers.
She is survived by her daughters, Pat (Cam) Locklear of the home, Peggy (Mickey) Hurst of Chesterfield, SC; brothers, James (Dot) Sellers of High Point, NC, and Donald (Carolyn) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; sister, Ruby Morgan of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Robin (Ronnie) Brown of Verona, VA, Penny (Dale) Wilkerson of Chesterfield, SC, Shane (Denise) Hurst of Buford, GA, and Cammie Locklear of the home; great grandchildren, Matthew (Amber Casstevens) Brown, Andrew (Kim Corns) Brown, Ben (Bethany) Brown, Megan (Nate) Gardner, Logan (Trent Allen) Wilkerson, Davin Wilkerson, Danielle Pintor, Jessica Hurst, and Sara Hurst; great-great grandchildren, Ryan, Chloe, Ethan, Chance, and Cason; and daughter of the heart, Dottie Ann Lowery of Chesterfield, SC.

Billy S. Shaw

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Billy S. Shaw, age 76, entered into rest on Thursday, July 20, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 5:00 PM Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Lower Macedonia Baptist Church by Dr. Lindsey Powell and Rev. James Knotts with burial following in the Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mr. Shaw was born January 30, 1941 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Oscar Samuel and Alma Lewis Shaw. He was a retired employee of Chesterfield Webbing with over 40 years of service and a faithful member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. His hobbies included fishing and watching racing, but the most cherished time was spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Billy was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nina Lynn Moore; brothers, J.W., Wilson “Speedy”, James, and Murdock Shaw.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Pat C. Shaw of the home; son, Sammy (Pam) Shaw of Society Hill, SC; daughter, Tammy (Chris Roscoe) Gulledge of Chesterfield, SC; nephew and son of the heart, Marty (Tammy) Shaw of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Sheila (Anthony “Bone”) Allen, and Justin Shaw both of Patrick, SC, Nicholas Gulledge, and Crystal Gulledge both of Chesterfield, SC, and Amber Shaw of Patrick, SC; great grandchildren, Daulton, Stormy, Justin, Lyndon, River, and Jace; brother, Johnny (Avanella) Shaw of Mt. Croghan, SC; sister, Ruby (Johnny) Winburn of Cassatt, SC; close friend, Mike Moore of Chesterfield, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

RUBY - Terry Wayne Streater, 48, died on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 3PM from the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, Ruby, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born February June 21, 1969 in Chesterfield County, SC to Rosie Bittle Streater and the late James H. Evans. Survivors: a daughter, Shatorie Streater, Minot, ND; a son, Jamar Lyles, Cheraw, SC; his mother, Rosie M. Streater, Ruby, SC; five brothers, Michael Evans, Bronx, NY, Anthony Kitt, Philadelphia, PA, Martin Evans (Linda), Laurinburg, NC, Donald Streater, Ruby, SC and Timothy Streater, New Haven, CT; seven sisters, Willa Little, Ruby, SC, Delores Streater, Raleigh, NC, Mae Helen Felder (Cliff), New Haven, CT, Robin Owens (Paul), Irmo, SC, Teresa Streater, New Haven, CT, Diane Evans, Ruby, SC and Tina Ellis (Michael), Ruby, SC. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Linda Hancock Stroud

CHERAW - Mrs. Linda Hancock Stroud, age 74, entered into rest on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at her home. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 23, 2016 at St. Paul United Methodist Church by Pastor Bruce Adams with burial following in the Chesterfield Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mrs. Stroud was born March 27, 1943 in Ruby, SC a daughter of the late William Ellis “Dude” and Amy Gulledge Hancock. She, along with her husband, founded the family business, John F. Stroud and Son, Inc. in 1969 and worked alongside of him for many years. A member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Linda was always active in the community helping in any way she could. Her hobbies included working in her yard, cutting grass, cleaning the pool, but her favorite pastime was time spent with her grandson, Jackson.
In addition to her parents, Linda was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Betty H. Gaddy, Mary H. Morris, and Louise H. Mills; and 2 brothers, Jimmy Edward Hancock and James Dean “J.D.” Hancock.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, John F. “Dunk” Stroud of the home; son, Jody (Michelle) Stroud of Chesterfield, SC; daughter, Amy Ruth Stroud of Cheraw, SC; grandson, Jackson Alexander Stroud; brothers, Manley (Glennie) Hancock of Ruby, SC, and Glenn Hancock of Cheraw, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Kindred at Home Healthcare, the staff of Chesterfield Convalescent Center, and each caregiver that assisted in caring for Mrs. Stroud.

RUBY - Mr. Robert H. Privette, Sr., age 76, entered into rest on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at his home. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Friday, July 14, 2017 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Brent Taylor with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Privette was born August 21, 1940 in Lilesville, NC a son of the late Clarence and Carrie Annabell Wren Privette. He was a retired supervisor with Delta Mills (formerly J.P. Stevens) with 48 years of service. A loving, hardworking husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Robert was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and time spent with his family.

In addition to his parents, Robert was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Bonnie F. Privette; sister, Grace P. Privette; brothers, Clarence Dow, Thomas, William, and Carl Privette.

Survivors include his son, Robert H. Privette, Jr. of the Philippines; daughters, Carolyn (Eric) Hatchell of Cheraw, SC, Pamela (Tommy) Kirkley of Society Hill, SC, Robin Lang of Bennettsville, SC, and Deborah (Randy) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Joseph (Diedra) Hatchell, Jr., Randell (Bailey) Sellers, Brandon (Kimberly) Pregmon, Amber Pregmon Parker, Corbin (Ashley) Hatchell, Courtney Hess, Carrie Privette, Taylor (Rachelle) Lang, Caitlin (Jacob) Williams, Forrest Privette, Rory Privette, and Carolina Privette; great grandchildren, Kinsey Hatchell, Lily Pregmon, Joseph Hatchell, III, Kodak Hatchell, Remmington Hatchell, Brody Williams, Case Sellers, Braxton Williams, and Sophie Lang.

Martha Eddins Ratliff

WADESBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Martha Eddins Ratliff, age 65, entered into rest on Sunday, July 9, 2017. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Pine Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Mark Phillips and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial following in the Anson Memorial Park. The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church.
Mrs. Ratliff was born June 10, 1952 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Edgar L. and Emma Campbell Eddins. She was employed with Autumn Care of Marshville as a C.N.A. Martha was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church of Chesterfield and enjoyed worshipping at Lilesville Baptist Church. She enjoyed watching old movies and listening to southern gospel music. Her favorite pastimes were spending time traveling with friends and shopping.
In addition to her parents, Martha was also preceded in death by her husband, Larry Ratliff.
Survivors include her sister, Sonia (William) Adams of Ruby, SC; nieces, Amy (Russ) Carter of Chesterfield, SC; great nieces, Rebecca (James) Wood of Lexington, SC and Kristin Carter of Greenville, SC.

Ravelnel Herbert Williamson

CHERAW - Ravelnel Herbert Williamson, 77, died Tuesday July 11, 2017. Born January 8, 1940 in Cheraw, SC, he was a son of the late Jack and Nancy McCall Williamson. He was a Mason, and known as the local Handy Man. He was affectionally nicknamed “The Washing Machine Man.” Ravelnel had many hobbies, most of which involved being outdoors like fishing, shooting, and swinging in his father’s porch swing. He also enjoyed learning about his hometown’s history, making his friends and family laugh, and building and fixing anything he could get his hands on. Besides his children and grandchildren, among his prized possessions were the porch swing his father built as a young man and his dog, Wheeler (his youngest baby).

He is survived by sons, Johnny Williamson of Cheraw, SC and Dustin (Sharon) Smith of McColl, SC; daughters, Pam McClure of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Cindy Ingram of Cheraw, SC, and Deanna Skidmore of Cornelius, NC; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Roberta Brigman of Cheraw, SC and Diane (Bill) Walls of Cross, SC; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many treasured friends.

Ravelnel was preceded in death by his parents, listed above; brothers, Howard Williamson and Glenn Williamson; sisters, Dorothy Smith and Judy Hogan; as well as former life companion, Myrtle Odom and loving wife, Linda Brooks Williamson.

The family received friends and loved ones from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Saturday July 15, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC, with the funeral service following at 2:00 PM in the chapel.

The burial service was immediately after in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Should friends and family wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Chesterfield County, PO Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

David Scott Boan

CHERAW - David Scott Boan, 54, died Thursday, June 29, 2017. Born in Cheraw, SC, he was a son of the late Ira Walker and Willie Mae Curry Boan. David enjoyed softball, boxing, fishing, and weightlifting.

Surviving are his sister, Gloria Butler of Conway, SC, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, and a brother, Phil Boan.

The family received friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Kiser Funeral Home.

A funeral was held 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Kiser Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
